In this video we tackle the famous Black Bear Pass near Telluride Colorado. But shortly after coming down past the sheer cliff and waterfall, things take a turn for the worse when a freak hail storm hits the mountain. What comes next is flash floods, mudslides, and landslides that eventually trap us from escaping. There were many hikers on the trail as well and 911 was called and search and rescue was sent out to along with road crews to help recover missing and or hypothermic hikers and rock climbers who were in the area. A bulldozer was needed to reopen the road before we could get out. At least 1 rock climber who was said to have started the Via Ferrata climb just before the storm and was reported missing, his whereabouts are still unclear: denver.cbslocal.com/2020/07/27/telluride-mudslide-road-damage-evacuation-stranded/

Love this video !! Ran Black Bear in August this year for the first time. We ran it solo right after several slides closed the road for a week due to lots of rain. I stopped right before things got serious and took a dip in the creek. Splashing water on my face, neck and head saying a prayer to the BB gods. Colt i love you man !! We ran it in 2 hours in 45 minutes in a full size. No issues.
I’ve already done Black Bear once and thought it would be “fun” to do it in the rain someday. Not anymore. Thanks for the unintentional PSA. Glad you are okay. ✌🏻
I started 4-wheeling in 1975. Now, I have a Motorhome. No more off road, unfortunately. I enjoy watch you cammers wheeelin' and cammin'. At least I ca watch.
I went over this pass in about 1966. I was young and terrified! I'm old now and would be terrified. That's why I'll watch this from the safety of my home! I can't stop watching and I can't look away, even though I want to! Great video and great driving. :)
Celebrating 40 years me and the wife, spent most doing some of the same kind of outdoor 4 wheel Activities. Love that this is still alive with you young folks. Still enjoy these trips and my collection depending on the road I'm traveling, even at 60 yrs old.
@@justinalexander4428 you could get snow there in October, be prepared, I was thinking October myself, but this video really wakes you up to the dangers, all i can say is they need to thank the big guy above
I've been over it when they had 6 inches of snow the night before up on top. Been over in some serious rain as well but nothing like this. Made my hands all sweaty and tense watching it after being over this several times. Glad you guys made it safe and sound, several haven't before you. Great video.
@@bobbendt1698 i went over in the late 80's early 90's multiple times. Then moved from Colorado to Seattle, now in Kansas . Planned to do it soon but I may wait til next summer. The key is you need to do it early in the morning, before storms roll in. It seems the trail is really narrow now. Maybe soil erosion or something or I'm just getting older. Probably older and wiser or I'm chicken.
I haven't seen landscapes like those high pass areas since my husband and I drove over Rollins Pass in the 1980s. We scattered ashes up there, and now it's not open all the way across anymore--couldn't have worked out better for our purposes. Now every thought of our beloved son is associated with that beauty.
I've watched maybe a half dozen Black Bear Pass videos, but this was the first one that frightened me at least a little. At first the wet trail bothered me, then the debris started crashing by! Glad you made it through. Wow!
It would have been a lot easier if he would have let the passenger handle the radio, therefore keeping BOTH hands on the wheel & paid complete attention to the road conditions, ESPECIALLY when the rockslides started .
I came here to say this same thing, i have watched days upon days worth of videos over the years and this is the only one that legitimately had me hooked to see the outcome.
Good video. It should serve as a message to out-of-staters; summer hail and intense storms are EXTREMELY common in the mountains after noon. These aren't a freak occurrence, although this one seemed particularly severe and to hit an area with way too many people on it for the time of day. Glad you all made it safely, but hopefully it's a lesson learned on timing.
I was born in western Colorado and have lived there all my life. When I was a teenager I had a 78 fj40, sprung over in front and quarter ecliptic in the rear. Locked and 42's. I did black bear pass in the late fall once with like 15 inches of fresh snow and tire chains. I've done all of the passes and the unknown trails. But that afternoon was pretty scary. I just found your channel, it's great :-)
Matt, my wife & I enjoyed yalls video of Black Bear. We have been to the San Juan for 5 years straight and are headed back up for our 6th this Sept. We've done BB at least twice each year except for 2019 when we went too soon (late July) and it was still closed. Y'all had a great guide and both did very well keeping your heads. We've been caught in a few Hail Storms and glacier stuck but never on BB. Our JKU just rolled over 100k so we bought an F-250 & trailer and found your vid on strapping to trailer very helpful. Keep taking adventures together. Makes for a happy marriage (36 yrs). Hope to maybe tril with y'all someday.
I lived in Telluride back in the late 70’s and know this pass well. The only time I traveled up against the one way was to rescue a friend who thought his 4 wheel drive could make the climb. This is the point; traversing this pass without catastrophic consequences is a combination of the right vehicle, the proper experience and weather conditions. Leave one of these essentials out and only luck will get you down.
One of the best off roading videos I have seen in while. Intense. You could tell you are AT THE VERY LEAST nervous. And rightly so. A little arm chair quarterbacking here, give the radio to your wife and get both those hands on that wheel. Thats being said, you did well! Thanks for sharing this very dramatic and exciting moment with us!
This has been one of the most entertaining videos I have seen on TH-cam in a long time! Hands down, on my knees. That's how awesome this video is to me.
hey neighbor, Utahn over here, watched a couple of your videos colorado has some beautiful country as well, glad to just watch it from this perspective. that was absolutely intense and scary glad you all are safe, I would have had a meltdown with my fear of heights.
Life is about making memories and you NAILED IT! Happy anniversary and hope you two have many more. Awesome video, full of romance, adventure, nature's beauty, and her fierce side for a little drama.
I went over this trail in the early 80’s in a full sized Chevy Blazer. At one point, going up a really steep pitch, the truck stalled because the float stuck in the carburetor. I started rolling back down, freaked out, hit the brakes, was then skidding down very close to the edge, so I had the brilliant idea to turn so that I backed into the side of the hill. It worked and bent the bumper in a bit on the left rear but it stopped me. I then had to get up under the hood and bang on the carb a bit of jar the float free. After that, the Blazer started and I continued without further problems except for the serious need to find a restroom in a really big hurry!!
Wow…..I’ve been over Black Bear pass once on a beautiful day and that was plenty of excitement for me. Glad everyone made it safe and sound through this harrowing adventure. What a video. Great job editing.
Lucky you guys had the ability to call for help. After graduation in 1992 me and my friend planned a two week backpacking trip into the back country in Mammoth Lakes. A hail and lightning storm moved in. We had a base camp in the forest and much more lightning. Lightning was striking trees and the ground all around us for hours. All we had was a tent to protect, we finally fell asleep with the lightning still striking. I think the only way we fell asleep was we tired ourselves out being so stressed for so long.
My sister was on a Backpacking trip in MI. They all had just normal tents. Got caught out in a horrific storm. Next day they found a Tornado had just skipped over them.
I used to live in telluride and crested butte for 8 yrs and colorado taught me one thing never take colorado for granted on any day of the week there is never a freak anything thats just the way it is. I felt for you guys have been there a few times makes for a hell of a story at the end of the day.
Straight up from feeling safe. To mother nature showing who is the boss. God bless you all. I'm glad you are ok. An anniversary you will never forget. 🙏✌❤🌹
that was the most realistic vid I have ever seen of that pass, thanks for keeping it real and not editing out the moments even when you seemed a bit scared, lots of people edit so they look courageous but you're a real man you show it all.
Jeep windshields are forever cracked. Get a new one... cracks, hit with a rock... crack, temp fluctuation.... crack , fart too loud while driving... crack 🤙
I know it's been three years since you posted this, but I took my Cherokee Trailhawk through Black Bear pass and had absolutely no issues. Glad you made it out to live the tale
WOW.....just WOW! I've run BBP 4 times now and leave tomorrow morning to go run it again. You can bet I've been checking the weather reports! Glad you all made it safe. It gets sketchy and slick on the switchbacks when wet but then having basketball sized boulders flying passed you....there's a real pucker factor!
In the first minute or so of your production, if you'll look over your right shoulder at the sky, you could see the skies were already threatening and a very BAD idea to be on ANY exposed trail with a sky looking like that. Showers could clearly be seen in the distance prior to the beginning of the one way portion and a better choice would have been to turn around at that point and wait for a better day ! I'm glad that no one got hurt or killed (I;m guessing)but there are times when the wisest choice is to stop and wait out the weather so go prepared ! Or better yet, pay attention to the sky and go when conditions are more favorable. This got too painful to finish watching but thanks for sharing and a big shout out to search and rescue and those who risk life and limb helping the less wary !
I just had to add to this; my wife and I are coming up on our 53rd anniversary next week. We still smile at each other, we still hold hands, I still open the car door for her and we still enjoy doing things together and that includes off-roading. Happy trails.

Dang I’ve been living in Telluride for the past 7 years and I’ve never even seen the road get covered in rocks like that. But during the winter it’s crazy up there. All those spots where new water falls formed, well in the winter avalanches shoot down those spots. This is where I’d take the dogs to play fetch during the winter. Love that town. I still consider it home. Everyone knows everyone and everyone is always happy 👍😄 Also congrats on your guys marriage by the way 👍 Not a lot of people can say the same thing these days.
I liked telluride better back in the 70s when is was a small mountain town un violated by the rich & famous. Really sad a mountain was tore up to build mountain village
This was like a movie. I know it was a dangerous situation so I’m not making light of it but it was very exciting to watch. I felt the tensions and concerns. Totally engrossing.
Epic, epic, epic video. Thank you for the upload. Best Jeep commercial ever! I'm glad you and your lovely wife are safe and sound. Happy anniversary! I hope McDonald's was awesome.
Colorado in the mountains is notorious for massive storms, look at all the huge mudslides between July and August 44 in just the first month. That's why they were shutting down I-70 every time a storm comes through, because of these unpredictable conditions.. be careful out there.
It’s been about 40 years since we did this road in rented jeeps from Ouray. The Arizona Jeep a friend was driving made it interesting when it stalled on the rock by the piton where we evacuated the Jeep occupants, deployed the winch and just made it back over the top toward Red Mountain Pass. Thanks for the video, many memories recalled!
Awesome video! My first jeep was a 1978 CJ7 riding logging roads in the UP Michigan, now I’m driving a 2018 Sport S JLU in the So Ca desert. I was tensed up just watching your adventure.. lol great job.
The best memories are never made easy. 20-30 years from now it'll be the times like these we look back on, might have seemed perilous at the time, but I'm sure this one will stick out when you guys think back on your anniversaries.
Great video. That was a wild experience. My brother and I rode our mountain bikes up to the Tom Boy Mine out of Telluride in the beginning of July. It rained on and off all the way up and down, but it was nothing like what you guys experienced. We got that on a different day while out on a ride outside Cortez. The trail out literally became a wash. We see similar storms where we live in Tucson. Those crazy monsoon storms are no joke. You have to give mother nature "all" the respect.
this video had me on eidge. the road requires full attention on a good day. foggy windows, the beating of the hail, slick muddy spots. just intense. Glad everyone was safe.
Omg I just watched your harrowing trip. I've been over that pass and it was sketchy in good weather. From Telluride we went back to Ouray over the Imogene pass. Got up to 14,000 ft. It was spectacular. So happy you made it safe through that trip. I had butterflies just watching that!
Incredible how fast, effective and efficient these road crews are. It's not intense as long as one can drive with just one hand on the wheel and the other occupied with a radio while setting the AC.
This is a great video, thanks for all the hard work editing it and making it watchable. I’ve been mountain off-roading in my 25 year old oil burner Land Cruiser 80 Series for many years now in all weathers and the thing that was most scary in this video was watching you steering with one hand (the dumb radio was in you’re other hand) thumb in the spokes, palming the rim, my goodness... breaking every rule of control. Please don’t do this anymore my friend. You got away with it this time, but next time you may not be so lucky. Trust me, I hate reading smart-ass comments criticizing cammers, but please, for the love of God, take this as a constructive comment. I’ve done the same and I’ve had my scary moments because of this, power steering can give you a false sense of control, but one rock in the wrong place can snatch that wheel to full lock in a millisecond if you don’t have 2 hands ready to grip and control that wheel. Best of luck with your wheelin’ adventures to come. I’m a little envious of your access to these mountains, even though I have loads of fun wheelin’ the Carpathian mountains in ROMANIA, where I live. Have fun, but please, please play safe. 👍🏻🇷🇴🇬🇧
I think you've been very kind because you want them listen. When they were commenting on other walking only for a basketball sized rock to narrowly miss their friend you have to wonder. If they reflect on what almost happened rather than what the for away with, they'll learn more !essons.
Thank you for your comment. By far the best one on here. Question for you as I am not well versed in 4 wheeling/off roading, in a situation like this (specifically minute 18-19 ish). Given it's an all around crappy situation, what would be your plan action? Would it be safest to leave the jeeps and try to find somewhere that'll provide shelter (such as a big rock/boulder)? Would your best bet be to stay in the jeep and keep continuing on down even with the threat of flash flood waters on their way, water falls, washed out roads, etc..? Looking at this from a risk management perspective, what way should someone in this situation be thinking for the best chance of survival? Thanks a bunch!
I love being a Colorado Native with a backyard like this vid. It will snow any time of the year, torrential downpours are common and you don't leave the house without survival gear. Hope you tourist had a good anniversary. Bridal Veil Falls, were Nikolai Tesla brought AC power to the world!!!
@@bleepinjeep After Nikolai left the East, he came to Colorado Springs, CO. Very much a hot spot at the time for Rich and Famous. Some of his more fascinating experiments were conducted in his Colorado labs. I encourage you to read/youtube about him. You both were so lucky in that downpour, being with another jeep helped.
Yeah . He invented a way to capture electricity from the sky, and transmit it out 360 degrees. Build the tower once. Put the two 6 foot aluminum discs antenna on your house or biz once. Free electricity forever. Westinghouse lobbied congress to shut him down in the 20's, hired thugs to destroy his laboratory. He died alone , a pauper, in a one bedroom apartment. He was the one who invented radio. Marconi was a lab assistant who went and got the patent because Tesla was busy inventing other things. His backer, JP Morgan, was furious.. He invented most of the modern electronics we have today. When he died in '43 his inventions, not all of which were made public, were locked up in a safe by the govt. Remain classified to this day. We are 100 years behind the times due to corporate greed.
The stop at the waterfall from the looks on film, would’ve been my stopping point to wait it out. Trees for cover and it seemed more open. Watching flash flooding all around and continuing down 🤷♂️
This was the first Black Bear Pass video that literally had me on the edge of my seat. Once the large rocks started falling I was thinking "uh oh this ain't good". If I ever do this in my Jeep I'm gonna make sure there're blue skies above me.

This was a great video. This was real. Not something made for t.v. or something edited to make it look worse than it actually was. Watching them drive through the hail and then the falling rocks and the piles of rocks starting to slide across the road had my heart pounding just watching it on an iPad I can't imagine actually being there . Glad you guys made it through the pass in one piece stay safe so you can keep making videos like this

My thoughts as well. Not very smart. Fall is a better time to do this road. And turn back on the 550 side if it looks threatening. To proceed is stupid, and yet another reason for San Miguel County to close it for good.
Right??? If I’m above 10k feet in the Rockies, my adventures end at Noon and I’m leaving the area by 1 just to avoid the storm that is 100% gonna happen.
@@jimbailey1122 Wow that is really a tough thing tho - closing the route because not everyone should be on it. I can agree with that but I don't like getting denied from access for something that I did do myself.
Dang. I grew up in the Colorado mountains and have gone over a few of the gravel/dirt passes, but I don't think I've ever seen one as rugged as this. It would be terrifying on a perfectly beautiful day. Needless to say I won't take my little Nissan Juke over it.

@@timothygeiger437 I can see it: "So we got a call today.."😂
the crossover we all would have watched
Seems like Matt drives all over Utah, why not dip over to the nieghboing state of Colorado
Celebrating 40 years me and the wife, spent most doing some of the same kind of outdoor 4 wheel Activities. Love that this is still alive with you young folks. Still enjoy these trips and my collection depending on the road I'm traveling, even at 60 yrs old.
My wife and I have been married 19yrs and been together 22yrs. Two kids, 16 and 12. Life, full of surprises.
The best Back Bear Pass video I've ever seen
thats a compliment thanks... but it was mother nature that made the video epic!
agreed...headed there in Oct...and have been watching a ton of videos'...not sure i want to try it now lol...holy shit!!
This is top 5 craziest off road trip I've ever watched. Better than any movie film. Props!
What's the other 4???
Right? like a homemade thriller. i was HOOKED to my screen
WOW! This is one of the best Jeeping videos on TH-cam.
Great video. You learned a valuable lesson. In the mountains, when you see those dark clouds forming, you don't dilly-dally. You get your butt down!
Now THAT was an adventure you'll never forget! THAT'S what makes memories! Glad everyone was safe!
@@welcometoorefuge "2 hands on the wheel" stems from the days of no power steering, I highly doubt anything will jerk the wheel out of his hands
HAIL in July & August in CO is the norm...I have the claims to PROVE it...Love CO, HATE HAIL!!!
I learned to pack for nearly winter weather in the middle of summer. Man, I miss Colorado!
I've enjoyed seeing a lot of videos on off-road adventures. This was the most exciting one I've seen. Good job on "keeping the cameras rolling"!
I just found your channel, it's great :-)
Delighted you made it to Telluride. You've kept your cool, great driver.
By far, "The Best" Black Bear Pass Jeep run video 🍻
This is by far one of the BEST Videos I ever saw showing What God created in this Country. Thank You for the slow footage. Just Gorgeous Countryside!!
It was created by magma, glaciers, wind, and rain. But yes, good views.
hey neighbor, Utahn over here, watched a couple of your videos colorado has some beautiful country as well, glad to just watch it from this perspective. that was absolutely intense and scary glad you all are safe, I would have had a meltdown with my fear of heights.
Welcome aboard!
INTENSE!
Much better than Hollywood drama or thrillers!
Thank you, as a former Colorado resident myself I don't think many understand that we DID check the weather report before wheeling this day👍
Straight up from feeling safe.
Drove Black Bear road in 1971 in a stock CJ5. I will never forget that day.
Do tell
Major studios have released movies that are not as compelling as this. Great job, glad you’re safe and undamaged. Now fix that windshield!
Jeep windshields are forever cracked. Get a new one... cracks, hit with a rock... crack, temp fluctuation.... crack , fart too loud while driving... crack 🤙
And by the way done it hundred times with Cherokee didn't need a yuppie electronic lockers either !!

I know it's been three years since you posted this, but I took my Cherokee Trailhawk through Black Bear pass and had absolutely no issues. Glad you made it out to live the tale

He was clenching the HT like that because his facky was in the laundry.
Happy anniversary!! 20 years still smiling and laughing together. Good times. I find it hard to get into 2 years and still smile at eachother
I just had to add to this; my wife and I are coming up on our 53rd anniversary next week. We still smile at each other, we still hold hands, I still open the car door for her and we still enjoy doing things together and that includes off-roading. Happy trails.

I will say, it has nothing to do with your equipment, but you seem to be the exact person I'd want to encounter one of these situations with. Cool, level-headed, calm.
When our truck was full of camping gears on the back seat, we let stranded hikers stand on our rock sliders and grab our roof rack over muddy or flooded trail…. After made it to the other side, their appreciative smiles said it all!
ALWAYS wait in a safe place. The rain, snow, ice will always end. Been there, done that. Never drive through that. Glad you turned out ok.
Epic, epic, epic video. Thank you for the upload. Best Jeep commercial ever! I'm glad you and your lovely wife are safe and sound. Happy anniversary! I hope McDonald's was awesome.
I got a big Mac!
Thanks SO MUCH guys for taking us along. Excellent footage, even with 2 lost cameras! Glad you're safe, and happy anniversary! xo
What's up Colt. This is Brian Krueger and Sarah olson. But Sarah Krueger forever now. Just ran across your videos. Good stuff.
Colorado in the mountains is notorious for massive storms, look at all the huge mudslides between July and August 44 in just the first month. That's why they were shutting down I-70 every time a storm comes through, because of these unpredictable conditions.. be careful out there.
I have to say...probably your best video yet....very exciting,dramatic music,professional editing,dramatic scenery...
Excellent work
Thanks!
I do like the fact that you guys were trying to figure out how you could help everyone I respect that good job.
😱😱😱😱
Am I the only one who wishes they’d at least attempted to cross the wash-out? LOL
Happy anniversary, guys!
Smokey the Jeep they needed a rake and then try it!
I can't stop thinking about that it doesn't even look that bad at least try it
Seedless Grapes I’m sure it was unstable, having just tumbled down a mountainside. But, you’ve gotta admit it would be tempting!
@@SmokeytheJeep right.
Probably needed a vehicle better suited for 4x4, these Jeeps didn't have much ground clearance to them
Awesome video!
The suspense music in the background was on point!

These people have no clue
Great comment.
I think you've been very kind because you want them listen. When they were commenting on other walking only for a basketball sized rock to narrowly miss their friend you have to wonder. If they reflect on what almost happened rather than what the for away with, they'll learn more !essons.
No one diserespects Hans Gruber
Im gonna have to read up on Nokolai, that was interesting... It sucks we couldnt have toured around a bit more.
Nikola💞🙏

You guys handled it well. You kept your cool. Made decisions as a team. Handled those switchbacks without a spotter in the rain very well. Even tried to think of ways to help the hikers. Good video.

2 years ago… wow this was intense to watch! I can’t imagine the emotions… and there’s Matt cool as a cucumber. 😎
"freak hail storm..." I can tell you're not from around here. It hails often in the mountains during the summer thunderstorms.
That's what I was saying to myself. That's why a road crew was available so quickly. It's a common occurrence.
Should have stopped at a higher elevation for a slight pause; it’s Colorado, just wait 10 minutes and it will change.

You see alot of footage of Black Bear Pass ... but this has to be the best to show what it can REALLY be like... especially your guy's reactions. Everyone seems to show it as a Sunday Drive .. but THIS is how most people would be like when they got there ... even on a nice day.
At 20 min looked like good place to stop.
Crazy coming across this video again! We were there that day as well. We had just came off Imogene as the storm began that day, pulled over in Telluride and sat on the side street and couldn’t even see out our windows as the rain pounded down - insane to see it on video again! We heard about the hikers when we stopped in town for a bite to eat before we headed back to camp in Ouray…WOW!
