This montage is far and away one of the greatest moments in television history. It's brilliantly done and just absolutely gorgeous. The part with Avon in the court is just perfection.
Marlo was never the King until Avon made it so. He basically gave him the hookup to the Greek connect. Without Avon, Marlo wouldn't have gotten the connect from Joe. Even still Avon was King from inside. When he came home is boy Slim Charles had the connect when Marlo sold it. His time as King was shorter than dwarves.
zero I'm sure Avon didn't have anyone killed for "talking back". Or because he "heard" he was a being called a dick sucker. Doesn't matter, like I already said Marlo wouldn't have gotten the connect unless Avon gave him the blessing. Sergei otherwise would never have talked to him. He wasn't "King" until Avon said so. Case closed. Refute that!
he killed people just so d angelo would speak to him in prison. its shame you got head too far up avon ass to pay attention to the entire point of the show. all the the drug dealer were pretty much the same with only slight differences
Funny how a lot of us wound up hating Bodie after Wallace in Season 1, but then we began to like him or at least respect him; he was a soldier and all heart. Great acting.
MateoKalifas420 True. It was sad because this is his last montage of him on the corner. It means nothing the next season because he's just the next dude to get killed on the streets. Fucking depressing.
Bill as cold as that was, Bodie didn’t even want to kill Wallace...dude was just a soldier following orders...he represented imo the loyal person/working man who still believes in the American Dream. Loyal to the idea of a greater cause even though it no longer exists
Season 3 really is a masterpiece. It's about two men on opposite sides of the law making big changes for the good of the world around them. Those two men being Stinger Bell and Bunny Colvin, Stringer was trying to reform the drug trade, and for a while, no violence was happening and they were making more money than before. Colvin was trying to keep the streets clean, and by moving the dealers to Hamsterdam, not only did it keep the streets clean but it made the dealers happy too. But not only do neither of them succeed, all of the good that they did resulted in the complete destruction of themselves and the organizations around them. And that's because the systems they operate in are so flawed that they completely erase all of the good and take them down with it. Stinger gets killed and the Barksdale organization falls, Colvin gets blamed and the dealers go back to the corners. Season 3 was amazing with these parallels and it's still my favorite season.
99.9 percent agree, but there is a link to season two here. Stringer having D killed (who also believed in reforming the trade) eventually brought their whole side down. The one time Stringer went hard fucked it all up for the Barksdale orginization.

Solomon Burke gave this song the "slow burn" treatment. His singing gets more intense and impassioned as it goes along, but it's a subtle progression. Wrong. In the previous shot he turns around and sees his sister , smiles ,thinks he is vindicated in his belief that "family and blood" is above everything. When he turns back a second time , his sister is gone but Marlo acknowledges him instead on the other side. Avon smiles not out of resignation (game over) but because he realises that he must tread the treacherous path of life alone ,family doesn't come along. @youtubeadsareretardedandga44 I know I'm 6 years behind with my comment but I hope you're doing well and staying clean. May 19th, 2023 will mark two years sober for me and ironically enough, it took me between 9 and 12 months to fully grasp the true meaning of "one day at a time" and even though I have come a long way from when I first started my journey to recovery, I HAVE to tell myself to breathe and take everything one step and one day at a time at least 20-30 times a day. One of the many reasons why The Wire is one of my top three favourite shows of ALL time as well as one of THE best shows in the history of television is because the show depicted the addicts as real people with real problems who, at the end of the day, wanted to get clean and change their lives for the better more than anything else in the world. Once again, I hope you're doing well and staying clean. Keep fighting the good fight.
I watched Season 3 all in one sitting so the story was fresh in my memory when everything wound down with this montage. As I watched it unfold, a wave of clarity rushed over me and the history of the human race flashed before my eyes. ...I thought it was somewhat memorable.
That scene with Omar throwing his guns away made me tear, It like he puts on a face he tries to be the ubermensch making a code for himself, and trying to be above it. When he realizes in that scene all that he's under just a piece of coal that is to caught up to ever be a diamond.
Depends on what you're going for. Season 3 is definitely the "Avon Barksdale" season but it also ends with the transition to Season 4, which is a more depressing and bleak season. Season 4 is the "Marlo Stanfield" season and boy is it a dark one.
late to the party, just started watching the wire about a week ago, almost done with season 4 now. i've worked in several of the institutions examined by this show (e.g. corrections, substance use, education)...wow. the way that this show accurately portrays the helplessness/hopelessness that people like me encounter every day...i can't even put into words. i'm getting choked up IRL. greatest show ever - should be required viewing for all students at the collegiate level. thank you david simon.
Avon getting a glance at Marlo for the first time, and that in court, while already being defeated for now always gives me chills, and their little nods of "respect" from one king to another too...
It’s incredible. Seeing all the comments here from 10-12 years ago about how hard this scene hits. I’m watching (again) in 2023 and for some god forsaken reason this montage was never a thing to me. Now that I’m older, it hits SO hard. I haven’t lived a life close to anything this show depicts, yet I can relate to it so much.
I love the scene at 4:10 when Marlo sits down in the court room and Avon mouths his name to ask if it's him. Marlo is pretty much responsible for everything: Stringer's death, the Barksdale organization crumbling, and Avon's incarceration, and Avon is just seeing him face to face for the very first time
How is marlo responsible for any of that? Stringers death is caused because he lied to Omar and tried to have him kill brother mouzone, mouzone reached out to Avon and told him what stringer did, so Avon let him have stringer. Avons incarceration was caused because Stringer snitched.
Factssss been looking for this comment seems like everyone be hating on Marlo and dick ride Avon and omar like Marlo’s wasn’t going too to toe with them
We must be watching two different shows, Omar is responsible for the downfall 😂😂😂😂 People make Marlo to be smarter than he actually was. Omar killed barksdale heavy hitter and already helped weaken the crew.
Best montage of all the seasons damn I can't believe I was 13 and watching one of the best shows ever made not to offend any sopranos fan but the wire is king in that type of program
What makes The Wire so good is it precisely depicts the good, the bad and the ugly in crime ridden communities and society at large. Without judging , just depicting it as it is.
But I feel bad for her, the kid didn't deserve any of that, and she is the one who's gonna raise him, so in a way she also deserved better even if she made mistakes.
That's exactly what it is. He's conceding the crown to him in that very moment. And if you notice he doesn't even look pissed about it, just a look of resignation.
I know Van Morrison wrote this song but damn if Solomon Burke doesn’t bring it home hard..World keeps turning, don’t stop for no one, ups and downs, highs and lows, you just keep on movin…we are truly all alone, but if you’re lucky, you can grab and hold on and live off those good moments and people in your life…till that fast train finally stops. It’s all over much too quickly. The game is the game.
Marlo wasn't the reason for the crumble of the Barksdale. STRINGER was the reason. If stringer had shut his mouth, they would have destroyed Marlo. Remember, Marlo's muscle left the rim shop when Avon was about to invade it. Marlo only had chris and like two more people with him. Marlo would have been 10 feet under if the relationship between Stringer & Avon didn't crumble. String wanted to unite with the East side and Avon disagreed because he didn't want Joe to bite him in the ass later.
Potato Sack Avon neither understood the situation in the streets while he was inside, nor did he have enough trust in Stringer to let him handle it his way. In the end, Avon was right about Marlo being unable to be controlled. And Stringer was right about cooperation making everyone richer (and less violence and warring making their lives easier).
1:52 The child growing and laughing with joy, as children are programmed to do ... the mom crying, thinking of the let downs to come. Nothing but let downs ... at best.
What a brilliant show. The last couple episodes of this season were a fucking greek tragedy. I just finished The Wire a few days ago and already an yearning to start it all over again.
Just finished season 3 and god damn I’m glad I started this show. Sad I’ll never see it again for the first time but grateful I got friends I can recommend it to so they can experience it for the first time too. What a show.
Yeah, seeing Bodie like a soldier with "no country" and Avon no longer "the king" so to speak were pretty heavy scenes in this montage. This is my favorite montage, but the season 4 montage was upbeat and looked like it was setting up season 5 to be a banger of a season.
Right! Yeah Marlo being at Avon's court hearing pissed me off the first time around, but the second viewing I realized it was a sign of respect. Best show ever, except maybe Breaking Bad.
Lol it's basically a joke on how fanboys of both shows say one is better than the other, Instead of appreciating how good and different they are from each other.
In my opinion, one of the most underrated parts of this entire show is how Avon reacts to Stringer’s death. “The game is the game”. Even when it involves losing everything that matters.
giedrius tautvydas The Wire had the best acting, writing, music, and cinematography of any show ever made for my money. Brilliant from start to finish.
At the end,all the good men are suffered.Colvin, figured out that being cop was not just bashing heads but keeping streets and people safe, he demoted and blamed. Avon,he was a gangster but was more conscientious than Marlo, he was still respecting something, ended up in prison.Carver, realized what's being''real police'', co-workers blamed him for supporting Colvin. And we all recalled F.Sobotka, wasted his life to keep poor union workers bit better. Life's a bitch, The Wire's renders it bearable.
I have recommended this show to countless people. Always with this caveat : "Even 6-7 episodes in, you will feel like nothing ever happens. Stick with it". In my opinion, it doesn't really get going until Kima is shot.
@@sashatt2842 this season was amazing no doubt. But I still give the edge to Season 4 because to me that was probably one of the greatest television seasons of all time.
Idc what people say about S4, THIS was the best season for me. The fall of Avon and rise of Marlo, the relatable and thought provoking storyline of Hamsterdam, the clash between McNulty and Lester, the end of Stringer; S3 had everything. To me this was the peak of The Wire. Can’t wait to watch it again soon
Watching the series for the umpteenth time, I just saw another parallel. In this montage, Omar is throwing into the water the guns that he and Brother Mouzone used to kill Stringer. We hear a splash. In season 2, when Bodie (and Shamrock, I think) are tasked by Stringer with throwing some guns into the water, they accidentally throw them onto a boat instead. Stringer berates them and tells them they needed to wait for the splash.
You know this show is the truth because there isn't one dislike on here yet. That shit speaks volumes to how good/read/amzing this show was and is when re-watched and evaluated.
I think Avon shows his leadership best in season 3. He stops Stringer from using Slim to kill Clay Davis. He tries to compromise with Brother over Stringer, saying it's business, until Brother says 'Business is where you are now, but what got you here is your word and your reputation,' Then he has to do what he has to do, maintaining his leadership and integrity.
Everytime I see Frank Sobatka's picture I tear up, he was my favorite character on the show. A good man overwhelmed.
Frank is my favorite tragic villain. He was doing the wrong thing, but for the right reasons. It was never about money or power, it was about all the union jobs that would be created by the Grain Pier. Had things gone differently, he would have succeeded, and the neighborhood would have flourished.

Just finished season 3. The Barksdale family fell hard man...
taken is more like it
Nah. The king stays the king.
Joshua Prior lol. no. Avon was a NOBODY after he lost power.
Well perhaps if the wire ended here, it would be as simple as you put it. But as we see in seasons 4 and mainly 5, things aren’t that simple.
Best Season ending Montage.. Love how Bodie just looks.. and walks off
I watched Season 3 all in one sitting so the story was fresh in my memory when everything wound down with this montage. As I watched it unfold, a wave of clarity rushed over me and the history of the human race flashed before my eyes.
...I thought it was somewhat memorable.
adding Solomon burkes fast train lyrics to the end of this seasons episode---brilliant
The song was written by van morrison
That scene with Omar throwing his guns away made me tear, It like he puts on a face he tries to be the ubermensch making a code for himself, and trying to be above it. When he realizes in that scene all that he's under just a piece of coal that is to caught up to ever be a diamond.
He was nowhere near being the ubermensch though
I'm 45 and for some reason this is one of the greatest things I've ever seen on tv.
mannnn fucking RIP to michael K williams, you were hella loved and will forever be missed dawg🙏🏼❤️
I go back and forth on whether season 3 or 4 is the best season of the wire. But the S3 ending montage is definitely superior imo
Depends on what you're going for. Season 3 is definitely the "Avon Barksdale" season but it also ends with the transition to Season 4, which is a more depressing and bleak season. Season 4 is the "Marlo Stanfield" season and boy is it a dark one.
greatest tv show ever
late to the party, just started watching the wire about a week ago, almost done with season 4 now. i've worked in several of the institutions examined by this show (e.g. corrections, substance use, education)...wow. the way that this show accurately portrays the helplessness/hopelessness that people like me encounter every day...i can't even put into words. i'm getting choked up IRL. greatest show ever - should be required viewing for all students at the collegiate level. thank you david simon.
Avon getting a glance at Marlo for the first time, and that in court, while already being defeated for now always gives me chills, and their little nods of "respect" from one king to another too...
The entire series is a brilliant work of art. Obrigato.
Love the look of respect Carver gives Cutty.
Still watching in 2019. Classic material
2021
Best TV show ever. Wanna watch it again.
There will never be a series as good as this...poetry in motion !
This is as good as it gets.
The best TV series ever.
I could talk about this season and the series as a whole forever. Literally changed my life
My favorite ending of this series of the entire series. The song just kills it. This was the peak of The Wire. Man i miss this show.
Nearly time to get those DVDs out again. Finest television series ever made.
Season 3: Greatest show ever
"Hold my beer cause you aint seen nothing yet."- Season 4
Yes sirrrrr!!!!
Factssss been looking for this comment seems like everyone be hating on Marlo and dick ride Avon and omar like Marlo’s wasn’t going too to toe with them
Marlo was a boss, my favorite character.
Stringer caused his own death.
We must be watching two different shows, Omar is responsible for the downfall 😂😂😂😂 People make Marlo to be smarter than he actually was. Omar killed barksdale heavy hitter and already helped weaken the crew.
Even in 2013 a major fan like myself still misses The Wire!
we are @the end 2021, we still miss the wire.
@@jeffrey1261 we are in 2034 and we still miss The WIRE
@@JohnnyDeur shenzi sana wewe
Best montage of all the seasons damn I can't believe I was 13 and watching one of the best shows ever made not to offend any sopranos fan but the wire is king in that type of program
What makes The Wire so good is it precisely depicts the good, the bad and the ugly in crime ridden communities and society at large. Without judging , just depicting it as it is.
1:50 brought most of her troubles on herself, was really shitty to D and karma eventually caught up to her
But I feel bad for her, the kid didn't deserve any of that, and she is the one who's gonna raise him, so in a way she also deserved better even if she made mistakes.
That's exactly what it is. He's conceding the crown to him in that very moment. And if you notice he doesn't even look pissed about it, just a look of resignation.
RIP Michael K. Williams
String wanted to unite with the East side and Avon disagreed because he didn't want Joe to bite him in the ass later.
avon was the reason it fell. treat your men right and they wont betray you
??? How did Avon treat his men bad?
Potato Sack Avon neither understood the situation in the streets while he was inside, nor did he have enough trust in Stringer to let him handle it his way.
In the end, Avon was right about Marlo being unable to be controlled. And Stringer was right about cooperation making everyone richer (and less violence and warring making their lives easier).
There's no "who's right and who's wrong" in this. It's just these two brothers have different visions and different ways to approach a problem.
Damn right
Fuck him
Playing too many away games a snake
1:52 The child growing and laughing with joy, as children are programmed to do ... the mom crying, thinking of the let downs to come. Nothing but let downs ... at best.
What a brilliant show. The last couple episodes of this season were a fucking greek tragedy.
I just finished The Wire a few days ago and already an yearning to start it all over again.
Even in 2012 a major fan like myself still misses The Wire
Just finished season 3 and god damn I’m glad I started this show. Sad I’ll never see it again for the first time but grateful I got friends I can recommend it to so they can experience it for the first time too. What a show.
Look at Shamrock’s legs 3:45 he’s all excited seeing how the court uses the chair recognize system
Yeah, seeing Bodie like a soldier with "no country" and Avon no longer "the king" so to speak were pretty heavy scenes in this montage. This is my favorite montage, but the season 4 montage was upbeat and looked like it was setting up season 5 to be a banger of a season.
Personally seeing Donette crying her eyes out while D'Angelo's son plays is the heaviest for me. I just feel so bad for her.
Right! Yeah Marlo being at Avon's court hearing pissed me off the first time around, but the second viewing I realized it was a sign of respect. Best show ever, except maybe Breaking Bad.
Eddie Blaze
It scares me how true that Family Guy joke is
***** What joke is that? I'm unaware...
Lol it's basically a joke on how fanboys of both shows say one is better than the other, Instead of appreciating how good and different they are from each other.
In my opinion, one of the most underrated parts of this entire show is how Avon reacts to Stringer’s death.
“The game is the game”. Even when it involves losing everything that matters.
avon was always my favorite character. second favorite bodie
What a song!!!!what a Tv show!!!!!just wow...
giedrius tautvydas The Wire had the best acting, writing, music, and cinematography of any show ever made for my money. Brilliant from start to finish.
Been watching this on repeat for days damn i love this show and song
Words can't describe how much this show meant to me. And to a lot of others, I'm sure.
Much love, really love this show and miss it for sure!
Holy fucking shit, this show just keeps topping itself, and to think I almost gave up on it during season 1! Thank God I didn't.
JohnDanielTorrance Same happened to me
that was the best season..how u thought you would give up on it??
Same happened to me. Damn, it felt so slow and dense, but later on you start to love that beautiful and thoughtful pace.
Sometimes I want to re-watch The Wire because it was so great and there's nothing else on that can even touch The Wire.
every montage, the wire is clear that the main character is the system and the game itself
Never felt so sad as when I watched this montage
I fucking love this show
Seeing Bodie standing there alone hurt alot.
Hands-down the best work of fiction ever created.
The 3rd season was the best..the most spiritual, loved the come back story of Cutty
I just don't understand how this show didn't win not one award
An absolute masterpiece of a season ending montage
Idc what people say about S4, THIS was the best season for me. The fall of Avon and rise of Marlo, the relatable and thought provoking storyline of Hamsterdam, the clash between McNulty and Lester, the end of Stringer; S3 had everything. To me this was the peak of The Wire. Can’t wait to watch it again soon
"Idc what people say about S4"
Rude. Just say s3 is your favorite off the bat, nobody's gonna bite your head off
One of the best seasons of tv ever. I don’t know how people lock season four over this.
''Splash!''
You're right. Very perceptive.
I don’t see what’s so interesting about that.
I liked the look the lawyer Levy gave to Barkdale and his crew. He knows they're going down.
It felt McNulty was in a great place at end of season 3 thru most of season 4 until Bodie got killed.
At 1:10 "Yep, see ya on Walking Dead."
I thought The Wire showed the futility of the black man's plight in america perfectly... until the Walking Dead came long
Some win, other's lose, but the game continues....
You know this show is the truth because there isn't one dislike on here yet. That shit speaks volumes to how good/read/amzing this show was and is when re-watched and evaluated.
I think Avon shows his leadership best in season 3.
He stops Stringer from using Slim to kill Clay Davis.
He tries to compromise with Brother over Stringer, saying it's business, until Brother says 'Business is where you are now, but what got you here is your word and your reputation,'
Then he has to do what he has to do, maintaining his leadership and integrity.
Probably the happiest McNulty is the whole series.
Season 4 is the best because McNulty isn't destroying himself
"Herbert D Rod Johnson, aka 'Puddin'"
