+Kevin Kibble As I recall, there weren't sufficient police resources (or interest) to make a case against Marlo Stanfield, who was, in fact, dropping bodies all over Baltimore unchecked. McNulty tied pretty ribbons around dead bodies and wrote ribbons into old Coroner reports in order to make it look like a nutty serial killer was operating in the city. The non-existent serial killer brought Federal attention (and Federal funding) to the Baltimore Police Department, which afforded McNulty and his fellow officers the basic resources (roadworthy cars, paid overtime, etc.) that they needed in order to do their jobs effectively. TL:DR - The murders weren't fake, he simply jazzed up the suspect's profile.
this is so good comedy. bullshit so big they cant even fire the people who caused this disaster because they build a whole house of cards on top of it and everything would collapse. and the black guy is losing it. pure gold!
It’s beautiful how McNulty can be viewed. Personally, I think he is the best cop on the show. People can say he was selfish, he didn’t care about anyone, but he cared about the job & only the job. The city ate him alive. He was crafted by his experiences in the street, the mass corruption, and seeing endless dead bodies with nobody giving a damn about them. I know it’s a show, but for a second just put yourself in his shoes. He consistently sees murders, see what it is doing to children, learns of his friend’s (Bodie) death, chases serial killers who tear apart the city he loves, and absolutely nothing is done about it all so people can make more money and have more power Is McNulty the bad guy? Or is he a product of his environment? Every level of Baltimore in the show is corrupt. He’s the only character in the show who is corrupt to stop people from dying.
I love McNulty. Nothing wrong with rigging a system that is inherently rigged to benefit the powerful people, for the greater good. He saw the big picture.
God, I miss Reg Cathey; one of the truly great character actors of a generation and then some. He had both the physical carriage and acting chops to easily dominate any scene he was in...but instead he did what all great character actors do: he made everyone around him, including the "A-Listers," better by giving them someone to play off of. One of those talented "Hey...It's That Guy!" actors who never really got his due. Not that I think he'd have framed it like that, were it possible to ask him.
Why are no other Wire heads talking about the fact that Tommy Carcetti is running for President? You know that bland Dem that nobody talks about? The one sitting behind Hillary and Bernie? The one they ignore at every debate? That's Martin O'Malley, former Baltimore Mayor and Maryland Governor - the exact inspiration for Tommy Carcetti.
Because Baltimore and Maryland are the only places idiot enough to elect him. Actually, the character is a lot more charismatic than O'Malley. He was an asshole
Yes! Not only the greatest drama -- but at the same time the greatest comedy. So McNulty has fucked up the city government of Baltimore -- and maybe even the state government of Maryland!
I love this scene. 1. Rawls and Mcnultys ex sticking up for him in their own way. Rawls saying that lie led to some bust. Mcnultys ex saying consequences if it comes out. 2. Jobs being threatened when daniels says he wants to fire detectives responsible.
Even greater was the fact that when he was a councilor, Carcetti used a "drop on your swords" reference in his long-winded speech against police for creating an illegal drug community. That speech got him a spotlight as a runner for Mayor, and now he needs them to do exactly that for him and he's SPEECHLESS!
One of my favorite lines/speeches in the entire series is Daniels saying "The cops that did this, they gotta go. You cannot be telling me I have to live with this."
Norman was always a character I liked. I loved his reaction at the end "I wish I was still at the newspaper so I could write on this mess. It's too fucking good"
Such a great scene. This scene was the payoff for the season long storyline. I couldn't stop laughing when the Mayor was left virtually speechless and Norman being the Greek Chorus of it all.
I love how Norman laughs his ass off hahahahaahah He knows that if Carcetti falls, he can always work for another guy, or another... and the cycle goes on.
That Mike Steintorf guy who grabs Rawls later is a great addition to the later seasons he's smart and plays the game and reads the room beautifully and he's low key the reason Carcetti keeps everything under the radar and gets elected.
I love the quote, that comes right after this scene, when Daniels is furiously considering just spilling the beans to the newspapers about all of this: Rhonda Pearlman: "This is my career. This is everything. You go public and it hurts Carcetti. Maybe he doesn't get to be governor, but he's still the mayor and Bond is still my boss and you know the weight will not fall on them, it NEVER does!" Daniels: "Christ!"
And that! Right there, is why The Wire was such a great show. All that "matter of policy" line is exactly how those private closed door talks work. And from that the truth is massaged.
That's what happens when you have managers and supervisors that don't know jack or less care about the industry or trade they are managing over. There just in it to keep rising.
'But if we...(sigh) 'How can...?,' 'So this means, uhh...,' 'But...' 'So lemme just understand this.' This monologue was great from Mayor Carcetti (Aiden Gillen).
You can say that The Sopranos is the best drama series ever. You can lionize Breaking Bad as a work of art. You can laud Game of Thrones by epic sweep. All reasonable. But nobody has yet topped The Wire.
I fucking love this scene. He's speechless, breathless, he keeps trying to run with a sentence but it all leads back to the same realization. Such good acting.
The more I watch the show and these clips, Norman and Clay Davis are my favorite two characters. Would have loved a spin off of Norman consulting Clay on the campaign trail.
Aiden Gillian is amazing in this scene, Reg E Cathey immaculately becomes the viewer watching all this go down, but the absolute pinnacle of this scene is Lance Reddick's Daniels leaving the room. His expression as he walks through the door on exiting could burn through concrete. Should just show this in acting classes and say "yo, this is how you do it" because it's not big, expressive or showy, it's all in tone and delivery. Hell, The Wire is a 60 episode showcase of tone, body language and delivery
And that's why I think this is a great scene. Lazy writing would of had him exploding in anger or giving some self righteous speech immediately. Instead, it's closer to real life in that he is stunned. He can't form words because of how monumental of what just got dropped into his lap. We all have been there and can relate. One of my favorite scenes.

Damn, even these TH-cam clips can draw you in to the entire show. This TV Series was BRILLIANT!
That Mike Steintorf guy who grabs Rawls later is a great addition to the later seasons he's smart and plays the game and reads the room beautifully and he's low key the reason Carcetti keeps everything under the radar and gets elected.
I love the quote, that comes right after this scene, when Daniels is furiously considering just spilling the beans to the newspapers about all of this:
Rhonda Pearlman: "This is my career. This is everything. You go public and it hurts Carcetti. Maybe he doesn't get to be governor, but he's still the mayor and Bond is still my boss and you know the weight will not fall on them, it NEVER does!"
Daniels: "Christ!"
Daniels always been a bullshit
And that! Right there, is why The Wire was such a great show. All that "matter of policy" line is exactly how those private closed door talks work. And from that the truth is massaged.
Man he reacted to that beautifully, he's a great actor man.
Most definitely.
1:13 ❣️🗯️ 3:03 RIP Reg E Cathey🕊️
I love this intro. It's #2 behind the Omar vs Brother Mouzone's Old West standoff.
I also love the one where Carcetti goes to the church
The ones with McNulty’s great night and the street shootout the following episode are Top 5
RIP Reg Cathey
Chaos is a ladder
That's what happens when you have managers and supervisors that don't know jack or less care about the industry or trade they are managing over. There just in it to keep rising.
'But if we...(sigh) 'How can...?,' 'So this means, uhh...,' 'But...' 'So lemme just understand this.' This monologue was great from Mayor Carcetti (Aiden Gillen).
You can say that The Sopranos is the best drama series ever. You can lionize Breaking Bad as a work of art. You can laud Game of Thrones by epic sweep. All reasonable.
But nobody has yet topped The Wire.
The sopranos is better than the wire
Sopranos was overrated and boring to me.
I hold The Sopranos the slightest notch above The Wire. Both are the top of the list for best shows in the history of mankind.
Hereby Hereby: No it’s not
The Sopranos and The Wire are apples and oranges. It's really just down to a matter of personal taste which one is better.
Seeing Carcetti at a loss for words is priceless lol, McNulty you are the man Lol
Norman is the Lester Freamon of the legislative branch.
I fucking love this scene. He's speechless, breathless, he keeps trying to run with a sentence but it all leads back to the same realization. Such good acting.
god damn! why hasn't there been a show with the quality of "the wire" in the last ten years?
Game of thrones, narcos, house of cards, boardwalk empire..
Comparing Game of Thrones to the Wire is a crime against humanity.
DouchebagAssholeify agreed
PacTheOne well there's Breaking Bad
Boardwalk is the only one that comes close.
The more I watch the show and these clips, Norman and Clay Davis are my favorite two characters. Would have loved a spin off of Norman consulting Clay on the campaign trail.
Mcnulty was insane man😭
Just now realised he's Abaramma Gold from peaky blinders
Desmond Mobay, Martin Querns, Peter Baelish, and Colonel Edward Glason.
Just realised that's the ribs guy from house of cards
beakaHD Freddy
To think, carcetti took joy going after Royce’s seat because of hamsterdam
Littlefinger being angry at a Small Council meeting
Probably one of the greatest openings ever
And that's why I think this is a great scene. Lazy writing would of had him exploding in anger or giving some self righteous speech immediately. Instead, it's closer to real life in that he is stunned. He can't form words because of how monumental of what just got dropped into his lap. We all have been there and can relate. One of my favorite scenes.
I know that feeling so much. Just not sure what to say in these situations that got you thinking real heavily.
He delivered the hell out of that drop on your swords line.
One of my favorite scenes in the whole show
Norman is literally the viewer.
Dr. Pavel I'm CIA
Tell me about Bane!!! Why does he wear the mask?!!!
1:11 The first time I saw this, I laughed so hard at Norman's reaction!
Because I honestly believe that perhaps the most the appropriate reaction to the situation xD
R.I.P. Reg E. Cathey
(1958-2018)
Daniels' little knowing look at 2.40 is magnificent. He knows what's about to happen
the moment when mcnulty's creativity hits reality
littlefinger and freddy at work ;)
thanks dude!
00:56 I love that he's so pissed, his face doesn't match his voice.
Littlefinger.exe has stopped working
This was such a good cold open
Norman has got no chill
