Few actors get great roles. Fewer still get the chance to play a legend. David Simon might have written Omar, but it was the Michael K Williams who made him flesh. RIP to a truly brilliant performer.
Omar was a character that was only supposed to be in a few episodes but Michael's performance was so good Simon created an entire character arc that lasted virtually the entire run of the show for him, that is talent.
The genius of this scene is that even though Omar WAS lying about this Levy made the jury believe him because he solidified Omar's credibility of owning up to who he was. The fact that Omar owned up to who he was and was proud of it convinced the jury to believe his testimony.
David Simon is a genius in attention to detail. Omar says "I told the police what I KNOW"... not what HE SAW. There is a difference, and as brilliant as Levy is a cross-examiner is, he misses that slight difference but rather focuses on low-hanging fruit regarding discrediting Omar as a witness. And Omar's line on never putting his gun on no citizen hits different when you contextualize the meaning of citizen via greek philosophy. He's at peace with being a renegade, but his code won't allow for the violation those who live out these principles of citizenry. The Wire is a brilliantly written show!
It really is. What makes it even better is there was 0 ad libs which means all those quotes we all love and know we're written by simon himself. Genius writing. Genius level acting and character depth
@Boltshoko Molefhi WOW, that's a great catch noticing how Levy misses that little moment of vulnerability in Omar's wording. It really is due to Levy's hubris in that moment, thinking he had Omar figured out and could easily control the cross-examination. I hadn't picked up on any of that!
You have no idea how right you are about the "details". Season 4 still just floors me. I taught in Detroit for several years and the accuracy of what it's like to teach in inner city schools is unmatched. Simon put things in that I NEVER thought anyone else would know about city schools. The scene that hit me the hardest was Prez finding all of the unused equipment in a room no one paid attention to. It was a very bitter winter day when three other teachers and I took advantage of the "snow day" and went to the nearby high school, which had closed after the previous school year. We'd hoped to find books and maybe a few other things. What we DID find was a room full of SMART boards all stacked up being unused. Just sitting there. And then, to top it off, after we tried to move one of them to our building, we were told that we were not allowed to move them. Our contract with the tech company we'd outsourced to would not allow anyone but their own staff to move and install electronic equipment. So we all went without SMART boards another year. Yeah, it really is that bad and not getting much better.

Every single one of them gives an amazing performance. But 2 actors stand out as the people who make the show (especially season 1). That's Michael K Williams and Andre Royo. They SHINE the whole time. I've watched them all- Sopranos, Dexter, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, every single sitcom, and police procedure show- ALL OF THEM. None of them touch the greatest that is The Wire. The Wire is the GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME.
Rip Micheal k. Williams "A man has got to have a code" My favorite quote from my favorite character.. Omar was instantly my favorite character on the wire series. Hearing about his passing was saddening beyond belief, literally... I was literally shaking my head in disbelief for a whole 2minutes when I saw the headline. 😢
The Wire is one of my favorite series of all time. Easily a personal top 5. MKW was one of the most incredible and pivotal performances on The Wire. Omar, McNulty, Bell, Stanfield, Daniels, Greggs, Rawls and Barksdale... just next level acting across the board. Bubbles too.
The man kept it 100%. Whether legit or illegit, it's the game. While there are lines that I don't cross due to my own values, beliefs, and standards, ultimately, it's about one thing: survival.
I had an offer from the Baltimore Sun back in the 60s to write some freelance stuff for them. They liked a couple of stories I had sent to them earlier. That gave me a pass to ride in the back of a police car a few times at night watching the action. When I later watched The Wire I knew it was the real thing, that's how Baltimore was. The Wire was real, an amazing piece of work. And we have lost a great actor who brought it to life.
It's an amazing piece of acting when Omar seem to have an idea or thought he lacks the language to properly explain, so he comes up with a metaphor involving the brief case his eyes caught to make his point. It's so easy to overact such things by duration, but here Michael Kenneth Williams performs the body language within a split second.
I figured it was a reference to a quote from one of the godfather films. Very true to life IMO. Most of the people I know who dropped out of school and thrives on the rough side of the streets had extremely high levels of comprehension of what they saw as pertinent enough to study
Literally one of the greatest characters I've ever personally seen in my life. Omar Little and the Wire as a whole was one of the first things I saw that ever made me want to become a writer. RIP Michael Williams. And thank you. For being such an inspiration to myself and others.
I love the reactions of everyone including the judge and jury. It’s excellent. Everyone did an amazing job looking truly entertained, amused and surprised at Omar’s testimony against Bird. Fabulous acting by Michael Kenneth Williams, a superb actor. May he rest in peace.
In a lesser show, Omar would have started a dramatic monologue pontificating on the nature of justice and democracy and blah blah blah, but on The Wire, he conveyed everything he needed to with a few lines
The best part about it is that when Omar says that he is not accusing the lawyer of being morally lesser or himself morally greater. He sees the bigger picture and that it is what it is. All part of the game we all play. Whether right or wrong this is just the way it is.
Anyone who has never watched that show from beginning to end really needs to do so!!!!!! Its so realistic! I was a big city cop and this is the only show that really nailed it! The politics of it!!!! And it showed both sides! Masterpiece

Wendell Pierce as Bunk- Perfect
Idris Elba as Stringer Bell- Fantastic
Wood Harris as Avon Barksdale- Excellent
Lawrence Gilliard Jr as Dee Barksdale- Terrific
Aiden Gillan as Mayor Carcetti- Unbelievably Good
Michael K Williams as Omar- LEGEND
Andre Royo as Bubbles- LEGEND
There are a bunch of high quality actors on this show that I haven't mentioned.
The Deuce is just as brilliant as The Wire, in my opinion.
Don't forget Felicia Pearson as Snoop.
You're so right. The casting was so superb. And yes, Omar and Bubbles are that. Also Prop Joe - great character, superbly cast.
The actor who played Frank Sobotka was great too
"Fix it so he couldn't sit right " RIP Mr. Williams.
that scene is by far one of the best ever recorded.sheet any scene with omar is solid gold.
Rip Micheal k. Williams
"A man has got to have a code"
My favorite quote from my favorite character..
Omar was instantly my favorite character on the wire series.
Hearing about his passing was saddening beyond belief, literally... I was literally shaking my head in disbelief for a whole 2minutes when I saw the headline. 😢
Whoever came up with the casting of the actors for this series, I hope they got a big bonus.
Best moment in the entire series, actually in all of television. RIP mate, you were bloody awesome.
Text, direction, photography, acting and editing, everything made to the point of perfection.
Such talent. Out of this world. RIP 💔 The greatest actor to come along in a very long time.
RIP Michael K. Williams! You were the reason I watched this show!❤
The Wire is one of my favorite series of all time. Easily a personal top 5.
MKW was one of the most incredible and pivotal performances on The Wire.
Omar, McNulty, Bell, Stanfield, Daniels, Greggs, Rawls and Barksdale... just next level acting across the board. Bubbles too.
So sad to hear of his passing. He created one of the most iconic characters in all of television.
Rest In Peace to a legendary actor and a kind man
Top 3 TV characters of all time..Omar..what a show
Such an amazing performance for one of the best written characters in television.
Rest easy King.
And we have lost a great actor who brought it to life.
was it allready like that in the 60s
It's an amazing piece of acting when Omar seem to have an idea or thought he lacks the language to properly explain, so he comes up with a metaphor involving the brief case his eyes caught to make his point. It's so easy to overact such things by duration, but here Michael Kenneth Williams performs the body language within a split second.
I figured it was a reference to a quote from one of the godfather films. Very true to life IMO. Most of the people I know who dropped out of school and thrives on the rough side of the streets had extremely high levels of comprehension of what they saw as pertinent enough to study
MK Wiliams and his delivery - spot on - the Judge just left shrugging at the defence attorney lol
This was the scene that made Omar my favorite character in the show.
Oh my god, one of the greatest lines ever written and delivered.
this hits different now, I had just started rewatching the wire again yesterday, man.... fly high..
Classic this scene just reminds me how great this show was
Rest in peace my man, you will be missed
I love the shocked expression on the lawyer’s face. He thought he was on such a roll, but not with Omar!
Literally one of the greatest characters I've ever personally seen in my life. Omar Little and the Wire as a whole was one of the first things I saw that ever made me want to become a writer. RIP Michael Williams. And thank you. For being such an inspiration to myself and others.
RIP to a master actor………Thankyou for the memories Sir.
I love the reactions of everyone including the judge and jury. It’s excellent. Everyone did an amazing job looking truly entertained, amused and surprised at Omar’s testimony against Bird. Fabulous acting by Michael Kenneth Williams, a superb actor. May he rest in peace.
RIP to an incredible actor. Omar is definitely one of the best tv characters of all time. Up there with the likes of Tony Soprano and Walter White.
One of the best come backs of all time
In a lesser show, Omar would have started a dramatic monologue pontificating on the nature of justice and democracy and blah blah blah, but on The Wire, he conveyed everything he needed to with a few lines
The best part about it is that when Omar says that he is not accusing the lawyer of being morally lesser or himself morally greater. He sees the bigger picture and that it is what it is. All part of the game we all play. Whether right or wrong this is just the way it is.
@@nickchavez720 Yeah, they're both in the same game, but Omar is up front about it and about who he is
A show full of talent and he still stood out
Nice seeing these clips in full quality instead of the ones from random TH-cam channels.
Wish i could watch this show all over again for the first time
RIP MKW. We owe all these characters to The Corner and the streets of Baltimore!
Arguably the best character in any drama ever.
Anyone who has never watched that show from beginning to end really needs to do so!!!!!! Its so realistic! I was a big city cop and this is the only show that really nailed it! The politics of it!!!! And it showed both sides! Masterpiece
Best tv to ever come out of the ÙS. You can follow up with The Corner if you havent watched it already.
@@doobybrother21 ill look it up!
