    I miss the days when there could be a film review (by good critics like Dan & Roth) that didn't feel the need to keep saying "but these are just our opinions, don't be angry with us." But i guess that's just the sorry state of the internet these days :( :( lol.

    Having just seen this a few hours ago i agree with dan's point that i was waiting for it to hook me in but didn't. It's a solid sequel with good homages to the first, but what really weighed it down was introducing so many characters and not really seeing it through. They could've made it more a revenge type horror b/t Laurie & Michael, and maybe establish more of the relationship between the granddaughter and Laurie, to really tighten it up. As best summed up, the best horror movies are character driven and which sum up my favorite horrors.

  • @danielcruse6686

    Couldn’t these pointless jump scares be compared to many of the scares in the original like where Laurie bumps into the sheriff and screams or when Loomis gets scared by the police officer?

    • @fandomentertainment
      @fandomentertainment  6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I would counterargue - Loomis getting startled by the sheriff wasn't a jump scare to anyone but Loomis (there's no sting or anything to make the audience jump, we see the sheriff's hand land on his shoulder). Same with Laurie - she bumps into Brackett, but there's no 'sting' to scare the audience though that one may be a bit startling to a crowd. I think both scares were instances where the film was allowing us to see the characters being startled in the moment, whereas I felt many of the jumps in this movie made no sense other than a cheap, instinctive jolt that didn't pay off anything. - Dan

    • @danielcruse6686
      @danielcruse6686 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ScreenJunkies News fair points. And to clarify, I haven’t seen the new film so I can’t speak to how cheap the scares in the new one are. @@fandomentertainment I don't get why people can't understand that Dan, who has said this time and time again, dislikes jump-scares. I think he finds them to be a quick way to get the audience to feel something... (when a director has failed to do so with subtlety.) I think the fact that it had these elements and the others pointed out in the review is the fact HE can't be 100% behind it. I'm sorry you couldn't enjoy the movie to its fullest... but just as you guys in S.J. have taught us...It could have been worse. XD

    The pace of the movie is all over the place. The only positives for me are new music from John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis playing Lori Strode again. I watched the first Halloween movie today and it was incredible. I saw the new one tonight, and it’s not good. Jamie Lee Curtis was great, but they didn’t use her nearly enough. It felt like the director copied scenes from the original and marketed it as a love letter to the franchise. It’s more of a 2000’s generic jump scare horror movie, and I didn’t have fun with it. The final conflict was the best part, and the movie should’ve stuck with that approach.

    I have to disagree with Roth... the first Halloween has no "comedy" in Michael. (I'd argue even the later movies didn't go down that road). Freddy also was serious initially... it wasn't until the later movies that the comedy really started seeping in... Which goes to Dan's point about how it's more of a slasher film that Halloween (1978) spawned instead of being like it.

    • @princeapoopoo5787

      I think he does have comedic elements, but they're subdued enough to keep in tone with the movie. That little head tilt of his after he pins the teenage boy to the wall with his knife got a little chuckle out of me. Don't know of Carpenter intended folks like me to respond that way, but ey that's individuality.

    • @iansmart4158
      @iansmart4158 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well Carpenter thought the sheet over Michael was funny and meant to be played as absurd. Like a child still playing dress up. Its not HAHAHA funny, but its meant to get the reaction of, "well that's just silly" and then you're menaced by his brutality.

    Hey guys. Good review. I think a point that is not made though (and hardly ever anymore) is that we need to be able to have fun again at the movies. We need movies like the Halloweens of the world to also suspend belief for a little while. The Dr. Loomis character has been a walking, talking, shootin, rootin-tootin joke of a character since moment zero in 1978's original. "Hey Lonnie, Get Your Ass Away from There !" The wild-eyed monologues, the one-liners - a messenger of doom to set the tone - a total plot device. I had the opposite reaction of you to the new doctor - that disturbed the hell out of me, which is to me what Halloween is all about. No time wasted on exposition, no background, just "What the hell just happpened, why would he do that? What are his motivations?" The unknown and letting the audience fill in the blanks, and switching back and forth from comedic moments (thinking of Laurie's friends, even Macready in The Thing) is very Carpenter like. All that said, don't apologize or preface your opinions - you two are great!

    I saw it a second time and loved it. Michael has no interest in revenge from 40 years ago. He's "pure evil" and basically kills at random. The doctor set him free, the doctor puts him in Laurie's path again. It's a great film. It lets Michael be The Shape, and it gives people something to see and grasp onto with Laurie's story.

Highly enjoyed the movie, but got stuck next tot he married couple that if there was one minor thing in the movie they didn't like, they made sure to make every single person in the theater know they didn't like it. And also apparently every single character is a "retarded f***tard" (their words not mine) from their viewpoint, which they loudly stated repeatedly. needless to say, I'll be seeing the movie a second time. I think that the fact that they removed the idea of Laurie & Michael being brother and sister did hurt this film in a way. Think about it, how many other horror film have the element of the killer being RELATED to the central protagonist!? The idea of you not being able to trust a member of *YOUR OWN FAMILY* cause they might become a psychopathic serial killer is scary and I'm positive that a lot of audience members can relate to that. Add on top that they're psychopathic serial killer sibling is literally the embodiment of evil and chaos who can't be killed and won't stop until your dead for absolute terror.

    You two gave an HONEST, detailed, and outright compelling review of this film from both a fan and a professional vantage point. I have finally managed to see the film now and I can definitely relate to the sentiments expressed here.
    Halloween 2018 was not a "bad" film... but it is "debatable" when it comes to addressing whether it delivers on its marketed "promises" or not. The abrasive changes in tone were also indeed a bit jarring at times.
    Gonna marinate a bit more on this one, but I could immediately tell it just wasn't gonna hold a candle to the original or its underrated direct sequel (Halloween II '81).

    • @travisscott9057
      @travisscott9057 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People are going into this expecting this film to live up to the hype of the first film. Just because we see John Carpenters name tied into this movie in some aspects people need to realize that no Halloween movie will ever live up to the original classic. People need to lower their expectations just a tad and go into this movie with a open mind. If you go into this movie with that kind of attitude I think people will enjoy this film for what it is. If people go into this movie thinking they are gonna relive the 78 classic all over again then of course you are gonna be disappointed. I am curious to see how many people who hate this film after watching it the first time will end up enjoying the movie once they have seen it a second or third time after the hype has worn off.. I honestly didn't think it was a bad film at all. There were a few parts of the movie that I didn't care for but I thought it was a solid Halloween movie. I would probably rate this film as the 3rd best in the series right behind the Original Halloween II..

      @@travisscott9057 Agreed. I know the atmosphere and the tension that people wanted....but I feel like if they would have done it, so many would have said it feels unrealistic in 2018.
      Halloween is one of my favorite films of all time and I can't count how many times I've seen the sequels (minus Zombies which I hated). I completely get where they're coming from as far as getting Michael to Laurie and agree that it could have been done a lot better. But if you view this film as an insane asylum patient escaping again on Halloween, it mostly worked for me. He has no motive and just goes after whoever he feels like. I think that's what's throwing people off. And I can buy Michael being that because he is obviously insane and he has been locked up for 40 years.
      This reminded me of IT which I went into with massive expectations that could never be lived up to. Like that, I think I'll appreciate it even more with a second viewing.
      Yes I wanted more scenes of Michael watching his victims from out of the frame but this seemed like a far less patient guy. And the fact that he targeted random people made him unpredictable and nasty which is something he has not been in a long time. There is not supposed to be a reason for his actions and the character has always been better off unexplained.
      Like you, I really liked it outside of that stupid doctor scene. I never felt the tonal shift that Dan did. Seemed to stay with the theme of trauma from beginning to end.

    If I may (and please don't take this as an attack on any of you guys, I think you're super cool, BUT..) it would seem to me that way too often, and more and more, we're getting the concept of "subverting genres" / "subverting expectations" as a sort of "educated excuse" for failed execution in films. In this case, I'd have to agree with most, if not all, of Roth's comments on this movie, and a few of Dan's as well, but the idea of how the movie "turns the genre on its head" and such... and presenting that as a good thing all by itself is.. well, kind of misleading. And it's not just Dan saying it, of course ; all the time you get critics presenting that same argument (Dan does acknowledge that it's been done before within the horror genre, though, which is correct). Pretty much what happened, for an example, with The Last Jedi; its defenders use the "subversion of fans' expectations" as the cornerstone of their arguments. But you can turn things on their heads with style and good taste and expertise and thus achieve a win, or, you can get it wrong; I'd say this movie fails at it. It IS a work of love by the people behind it, but it just doesn't quite seem to work. I'd dare say the (original) Halloween 2 was actually a better sequel to Halloween.
    Great discussion, btw! Cheers!

    Just saw this movie and i had to side with Dan on this one.. Here's my review of it..
    Well, I just saw the new 2018 Halloween Movie (Which I still think they should of renamed it to something better lol) and here's my review:
    Well, I had to make this review cause I've seen a lot of mixed reviews about this film. And I was really excited for this movie going in as well. And overall, this movie was decent. I felt like this movie wasn't sure what it wanted to be. I felt like it had 2 complete different directors. A true classic horror director and a modern comedy director. It just didn't mesh right in my opinion. I felt like it was a roller coaster of scary and then stupid funny emotions throughout the entire film. The character's were forgettable, which was expected. But the thing that was great was Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Myers. That was the best part of the film. Period. I just wished it had more of them and less of the other people you don't give 2 shits about lol. The theme throughout the film was on point though. It had the slow version and all at some scenes which was a nice treat. I left the theater not 100% satisfied and thought it could of been better, but still an enjoyable film. Overall, I'd give it a C+.

  • @flyz456
    @flyz456 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am glad I don't listen to all the reviews all the time. This movie gave me back the old feeling of how dangerous Michael is. The problems that Dan has with the movie are not important to me. Was Micheal great when on screen? Yes. Was Jamie Lee Curtis perfect? Yes. Was the movie perfect? No.The supporting acting was mediocre, and movie suffered when Michael or Jamie were not on screen.That being said, Michael felt unstoppable the whole movie. Not in a supernatural way, but a true monster sort of way.
    This review reminded me of Double toasted review if "It". They were pointing out flaws that don't matter. If this movie didn't have a strong 3rd act, I would agree with some of the review. I loved this movie and strongly recommend it.

    I had high hopes with this film but honestly felt disappointed, as an old school halloween fan, it was a let down, i'm with Dan on his review
    Few things i'd might rescue are James Jude Courtney's portrayal of the shape, The music by John Carpenter, twas great to see Jamie Lee Curtis back as Laurie Strode, now let us add few cons which in my humble opinion flopped the movie for me, like the lack of atmosphere, it didn't feel like Haddonfield for me, did not liked that Sarah Connor approach they put Laurie in, script flawed, and guess what? they left the Ben Trammer character out of the story!! after all they said, maybe for the newcomer this film was great, but for us that grew with the original i felt it just didn't cut it, my daughter enjoyed it though lol!

    I enjoyed the movie up until the end. It was pretty bad tho in retrospect, having a solid 30-45 mins mixed in with an hour or so of just bad writing and unlikely plot devices. I love the 'mixed bag' description. Sadly I won't be buying this on Blu Ray, but really only because of the way it ended. I would still recommend that any fan at least check it out, whether in the theater or for rent later. On a side note, I'd love to see the Easter eggs that this movie points to in all the others. That would be sweet, and would actually make me want to watch it again :D
    Edit: Oops, I take everything back about the ending and it not being Blu Ray worthy. I didn't know that it didn't end the way I thought it ended!

    (Spoilers ahead): they’re right on some things. It was strong and u like it after u leave (cuz the final act) but when u have time to reflect back on it, it had a lot of pointless scenes that could’ve been cut for other better filmed set ups or atmospheric help that they 100% failed on as they didn’t make sense (I.e the doctor part). Certain failed scenes just felt forced so it could help drive certain parts (granddaughter losing her phone, most of her friends deaths, and the random way Laurie meets Michael via doctors actions). If they were hinting the granddaughter could become unhinged at the end, they could’ve done much more interactions w her and Michael to actually get there; she could’ve actually fought alongside her friends to survive only to eventually witness their deaths, or even witness it fully but unable to help. That would’ve helped the overall missing atmosphere and tension we really only get in the finale. Even the doctors effects on her were failed to be seen bcuz he’s written in randomly, despite it as a good side plot. She gets no real interaction w Michael until the end end. It’s good but they could’ve done 60% better setting a lot up of things that eventually became the end results to certain characters and certain scenes that would eventually come to pass throughout the film. The kills & fight scenes we do get are however excellent at being intense, just misused in the overall perspective of the film’s story. I also don’t like the editing placement of certain scenes, her shooting the mannequins and cleaning her guns would’ve been much more effective being placed at the beginning w/ her interview (would’ve shown she’s a bad ass but plagued emotionally as well).
