    When you think about it, this is an amzing deal. This CAMARO has beaten the Audi R8, Porsche 911, Nissan GTR, Lamborghini and some others around a track. It is AT LEAST $20k cheaper as a base price, and American cars are becoming more reliable than German cars in recent polls. I am not biased towards Chevy. I like japanese cars with turbos and crap. Like it or hate it, this car is worth it. And if you don't like it, don't buy it lol. Everyone has to stop complaining about the high starting price for a camaro, just realize the accomplishment made from GM and respect the engineering.

      true that, this thing is not only proficient on straights, it's great on cornering as well. what pisses me off is that some think that HP/tq numbers are everything. while that's true in some sense, you have to be able to put all of that power on the ground properly, which this car does for a relatively reasonable price.

      Air conditioning is optional and only adds a grand to the sticker; the car that beat the Turbo S and GT-R had the air conditioning and upgraded stereo.

    • @rjwz28
      @rjwz28 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      *****
      Back in the day, the Z/28 was the top track car, with an exotic high-rpm screamer of an engine known as the DZ302. You are mixing up the 3rd and 4th-generation Z-28 with the first and fifth generation Z/28; BIG difference. I had a 4th-generation Z-28 and it was affordable and fun, but the fifth-gen Z/28 is an altogether different animal. I would completely disagree with your assessment and say that GM more than hit the mark with this car, and they will easily sell every one they build. You want the affordable performance model? Get the 1SS; if even a used one is too expensive for your budget, the base V6 Camaro is still quicker than any factory Camaro built from 1974-1995, including your beloved Z-28, so pick one up and have fun.

    • @bavarianblucandy
      @bavarianblucandy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      rjwz28 yeah i overlooked AC as an option, thanks for clarifying that mate. if i had the money to buy this car, 1 grand is really nothing, but then again, the less a good car costs, the better right?

      @rjwz28 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I like to look at it as though the air conditioning and upgraded stereo system are able to be deleted for a $1300 savings, plus the performance benefits. There's no way I'd get a car without air conditioning here; I live in a city that is pretty much over 110° from June to August every year.

If I hadn't recently bought a new M3 (E92 V8) before they went back to that dumb inline turbo six, this would have been a contender. I haven't bought American (other than my Harley) since 1991. Kudos to GM, Chevrolet and America for showing cars can be built again like the new Z/28. Nice job Al!!! The Z/28 should never be dropped again, at least not for good. Thin the model line up, but keep the Z/28!

    Stangtards tend to forget that when motortrend based the big 3 against each other a couple years ago they didn't even use a Mustang because there was no comparable in that model, they used a GT for the Ford and a Viper for Dodge. Chevy still won. keep dreamin stallin's boys, you're behind the curve

    • @hartsickdisciple
      @hartsickdisciple 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's tough to tell that to newish Mustang owners at the drag strip or a stop light though. Model for model, every Mustang is faster than the competing Camaro in a straight line. That matters to a lot of people who buy cars in this segment. When a guy shows up at the drag strip with a ZL1 and gets spanked by a $30,000 GT 5.0 with 2 or 3 bolt-ons and a tune, that's not good. The Camaro is also very hard to see out of, and has a cartoonish interior and exterior. Terrible-looking car IMO. Buy a GT500 and upgrade to wider wheels and wider, stickier tires. That's the main thing holding it back on the track.

  • @rawrghblarghwaurgh
    @rawrghblarghwaurgh 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They're both fantastic engines. The ZR1 engine is extremely compact/light and pushrods allow a lower center of gravity. You simply could not fit the GT500's engine in the corvette, it's too large.
    Equivalent OHV engines are quite tall/large and heavy by comparison, but they have their own advantages as well!
    Anyway the ZR1 and GT500 are COMPLETELY different types of cars to drive. Mustang's are more of a grand touring muscle car and the Corvette is far more track focused.

      Antonio Barrueta That's untrue. Jay's emotions mainly depends on his mood or the guy he is talking with. Sometimes he's more energetic, makes some jokes. This time he had that "serious tone", but doesn't mean he isn't impressed with the car. It has a lot of great stuff what Jay is aware of. He might tend to be more of a Ford guy, but he definitely likes the car and really likes Chevrolets in general. He is an American and likes all kinds of vehicles after all...

    Great video as always Jay, Boy sure wish I had the funds to send my 88 iroc 5.7-liter Factory ordered. With 7,660 original miles back to GM and have it restored. I have permanent nerve damage from spine surgery and left me disabled. So I am unable to do a restore. The car has sat for 10 years. All original except for the hood. Guess it will sit until the tires rot off lol. I really enjoy watching your videos. I can't find the words to describe how much I enjoy listening to you talk about your collection of fine machinery and history behind each one. It's fascinating. Another great video.

    Ya! This beast was "Best driver's car" in Motor Trend magazine. As tested price seventy five big ones. To put todays car prices in perspective, I bought a 350 4-speed Camero in 1971 and the sticker price was just over 3,500 dollars. High test was about thirty cents a gallon too! Maybe I can try for a job at Jay's Garage so I could afford cars like this! After all, I know Jay didn't leave the keys in the ignition, but since I live in Wisconsin, it doesn't matter. Hey Jay! It's snowing in Wisconsin! How about that Job?!!?

GM, I can afford a $50,000 loan but I can not afford A $75,000 loan for a car... I like this car but at $75,000 i will stick with my 1996 camaro Z28 LT1. the Z28 was never such an expensive low production car..... it was the poor man's corvette. who can afford these prices anymore anyways, new cars are ridiculous. i think my 1996 sold for $25K something new, i bought it for $3k. its allot of performance for $3k, and it handles well. one more thing i dont really like about the 5th gen is the visibility is very poor. all other camaros had larger windows and the visibility was much better, the 5th gen has the most blind spots of any camaro ever built, its also very heavy for a camaro. my 96 is roughly a 3,300 lb car.

    • @ad356
      @ad356 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      andrew donohue the new Z28 is 3800 lbs its around 500 lbs heavier then my 20 year old z28. my 4th gen also has t tops. why no t tops on the new car?

      my 1996 has the LT1 its 285 hp and i have a PCM tune good for another 15 so its around 300. some fairly cheap simple bolt ons will easily put it north of 300, maybe a gear swap and its plenty. why is the new Z28 a $75,000 car?? the Z28 was never really cheap but it was affordable by someone with a fairly good income.. the new car being $75,000 is a rich mans toy.... also with 500 hp stock they take all of the fun out of modding the car

    I think they still ruined the legacy of the camaro. Back in the Camaro's day it was a production muscle car that another guy maybe 3 houses down the street has one. We have an 81' Z28 sitting in our garage right now! It was a cheap ballsy car that tons of people had, it was available to everyone. You could buy a good one for like 10 grand. But now, this is barely any different than an exotic super car. Back in the 70's to the 80's you'd see Camaro's every day. But now, they are gonna be rare. And only a select few are going to be able to have them. Both my parents work for minimum wage, and we have an old Camaro that my Dad has had for over 30 years now. And back then he could afford it. Now, what are we gonna do? Get the new Z28? No! We can't afford it!

      Smucko Smuckovic Yes we know pushrod engines are smaller, the Ford 302 Windsor block is one of the smallest V8 engines (in gross space) that can make 500 hp. Chevy still adds displacement to gain power, where as Ford adds volumetric efficiency.

    75k is pretty retarded considering the performance. You could go buy a Stingray or a GT500 with more horsepower, and if the "fun to drive" aspect is all you're looking for you could go buy a Scion FRS or a Subaru BRZ for 25k - and they all have air conditioning.
    How the hell are you going to ride a car in the summer without air conditioning comfortably? And they want to charge 75,000?

    • @jackmetcalf2092

      Its a street race car.. for people that have the money not a everyday car to go back n forth to work! Its not for everyone. I to thought the same about the ZL1, I bought a SS camaro and had the dealer put a supercharger to for way less than a ZL1. Now I have more HP than it and the ZR1, Its not all about HP! Its about bragging rights and history of an American Icon.
      If you were old enough you would saw that Ford did the same thing with the Cobra R a few years back.. It was about owning one that not many people would ever have.
      for the record I feel sorry for the Chumps that bought all those Cobra GT500s there's one on every corner....
