    I live in Woodend and would love to see the railway extended to Trentham. Trentham is like a mini Daylesford, with many enchanting historical buildings and excellent eateries plus the countryside is simply beautiful. Your on a sure winner and I can't wait !!!

      @@roberthocking9138 Some shires are very good at approving things and some are not, Hepburn Shire in which Daylesford is a part of, is pretty good, they realize the potential of tourism to their shire, which is only about an hour and a half from Melbourne and gets a lot of day trippers to their region. I would think that once VicTrack gets off their collective backsides and approve the right of way to Trentham, things will move very quickly for the extensions. DSCR really should be thinking ahead and do all the studies required, ahead of time, so that they are ready to move forward, instead of "wait and see".

      @@darylatkinson8802Council leases the land off Victrack. Today you need to research the visitor demographics, their time, attraction travel movements and work backwards to operate a railway to match what they are prepared to do. Not think let's extend the railway and more will use it. You need short interesting shuttles with a variety of activities each end.

      @@darylatkinson8802Today unfortunately relaying track is not straight forward or even lifting it for a railtrail, (see Castlemaine Maryborough Railtrail Groups half million dollar State Government grant recently for consultants). The forest if not private, is Vic Forest Managed. Then DWELP have a say and the SES, CFA, ONRSR, local indigenous representatives, local council, residents and stake holders, etc etc etc. ...... So back in the 1960's and 70's you trundle along the track in an old D3 steam loco or Y class and no one gave two hoots.. no one wants the responsibility to say; 'YES'.

      As usual a commenter that hasn't watched all the vid. It's best to fact check before commenting (so one doesn't have to backtrack in order to save face).
      In fact it isn't Victrack land or Victrack decisions holding up the project at all.
      The video very clearly mentions that Victrack is supportive, then, "Beyond Kangaroo Ck held by Hepburn council."
      The vid then goes on to say, "At this stage we haven't had a positive response from council."
      Fellow volunteer Richard then states, "The only thing preventing us from starting the extension to Lyonville is in fact the council."

    • @Kevin-go2dw
      @Kevin-go2dw 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      No! This railway runs railmotors and that is its specialty along with its location. Yes they might run a loco hauled N set, but they do not need a steam engine.
      Steam is costly to maintain and needs suitably qualified operators. Fuel might also be an issue. (DSCR has enough problems with bush fires.)
      I am a steam enthusiast and was a volunteer steam fireman for over 20 years on a tourist railway.

      @Kevin-go2dw We used 707 to haul two Melbourne Grammar School Bluestone Orchestra Tours over the last two years, and they have stated that sourcing and paying for coal is getting harder and harder to do reliably. So short answer is to avoid wood or coal fired Steam if possible. Having the Railmotors is a point of difference with other tourist lines.

    I wouldn't mind someone explaining why the Castemaine Maryborough Railtrail Group recieved $120,000 to conduct a survey and another $400000 via State Governent under The Enabling Tourism Program. That is over half a million dollars, not one dollar goes into actual civil works, lifting rail or disposing of ballast but goes to consultancy? Yet Maryborough is now connected to the national standard gauge rail system, Victorian ports and road grain haulage breaking up Hepburn and Central Goldfields Shire roads, yet Moorlort grain silos abandoned? So maybe Daylesford railway needs to ask Enabling Tourism to grant 1/2 million dollars for consulting contractors for future extension?

    No point extending. Tourism is an industry and not a one Sunday a week hobby for volunteers. Yes busy market day with for rail motor trips carry capacity 44. At $22 a ticket considering no family ticket issued (unlikely) that $15488 a month. The railway is dead closed six days a week. However 200 meters down the road Cliffy's Cafe has atleast 25 cars parked out six days a week. Average 2 persons spending $60 to $80 per hour at productive 6 hours that is minimum $9000 'a day that is $216000 a month. They have sold 600 coffee's and 400 plate ups in one day.

      these are heritage railways, not tourist railways. the whole point of DSCR existing is to preserve and recreate how the line looked like back when it was still in revenue operation, and part of that is restoring as much of the alignment as they can. if these railways only did it for the tourism puffing billy would have probably stopped at menzies creek

      @Kevin-go2dw 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@maddyg3208 Puffing Billy is a success in my opinion because of its location. End of the suburban railway and on multiple bus routes so it is easy to get to Belgrave. From 1975 the railway extended to Lakeside giving access to Emerald Lake Park. So it was easy to get to and had a great destination. Since 1975 much has happened to expand the railway, first the Emerald Railway Tourist Board and then the Puffing Billy Railway to operate the railway with paid staff and volunteers. Being part of bus tours and running seven days a week has contributed to its success. Finding volunteers to fill all positions can and will be a challenge, hence there is paid staff.
      Every volunteer railway needs to start somewhere before it extends, and DSCR is no different. Remember it used to be trolley rides before reaching Musk.
