Ah, Chanters Lane, Tylden. I was an Elec Fitter (Signals) early 1960 stationed at Bendigo. Winters with a stiff southerly breeze caused the red banner to sometimes not operate. When this occurred after 30 secs the out of order sign would drop down. We had no motor vehicles in those days, so it was a taxi job. All it required was the OOO sign to be pushed back into the mechanism and then tested. This repeated problem caused a lot of overtime. Head office was not happy. A similar problem occurred at the level crossing on the down side of Mordialloc Creek when I was stationed at Caulfield late 1960s. Incidentally the first flashing lights were installed at Warrigal Road level crossing in Mentone 1932. The track layout at Caulfield has changed dramatically since I worked there. Cheers, a good video.
Very interesting and informative. Thank you for that reply. It was interesting to read about your experiences with the wig wag from someone who worked on them. Glad you enjoyed the video. 👍 😊
I can only just remember travelling from Spencer street to Carhlsrue then onto Daylesford by steam train with my family in the late 1950’s as a very young child with my family as a child to see my grandparents who lived in Daylesford back then by steam train
Outstanding commentary (reminding me Fern Hill had additional roads, before my time). Great filming. My Catholic school ran retreats at its 'Continental House' at Hepburn Springs so once (1977?) we all travelled by train, in a BPL/BCPL IIRC. Can't remember if a Y or T class was the loco: my guess is a Y. On other occasions, my family travelled on a 280hp Walker railcar to/from Daylesford that as many will remember at times used to run through from/to Spencer St as Southern Cross was then known. I also went on a DERM, and Steamrail specials. The goods train ran in later years once or twice a week and sometimes had reasonable loading. Naturally, mostly 4-wheel wagons, with U vans featuring. Lyonville that isn't in this video in 1973 (50 years ago!!) featured on the front page of the monthly VR newsletter as the lady caretaker (probably the ganger's wife) had good gardening skills.
I remember travelling along this line to Lyonsville in the 1960's. From memory there was one through train (rail motor actually) from Spencer Street in the morning. The rest of the time you had to change at Woodend. For some reason I thought that the line branched off at Woodend!
When the line was first proposed there was a push for it to come out of woodend but the junction being at Carlsruhe saved an extra crossing of the Campaspe River. 👍😊
@@driver667 Later (about 1978) the line to Daylesford ran from Woodend. I believe I drove the very last diesel hauled train return Woodend to Daylesford while based at South Dynon (T class) around that time. Cant remember why my mate and I were sent - must have been a staff shortage elsewhere. Return LE to South Dynon.
what is the carriage donkey you mention at 4:21? the old style guards vans like what your camera is facing at 4:20 were all rebuilds of the 1850's to 1880's passenger cars that were removed from service as the new dog box swing door passenger cars on bogies were introduced.
Recall taking the train from Melb to Daylesford in the mid 1970's - a Walker railcar I think. Very slow journey from Carlsruhe to Daylesford - track was in horrible condition.
Didn't show the well defined crossing over the Tylden - Woodend section of the Daylesford road. The embankment is still very clear and the crossing easy to spot (for a Gunzel at least). I was on the last train in 1978.
@@driver667 Oh Right I see, You can only just go on the second platform but you can't go on the first platform with the Station building is because it's a private residence home.
How long does it take from Melbourne to Daylesford.? Because I want to visit there one day on Sunday and see the Y class locomotive pulling the Former V/Line N Set Passenger Cars

@@jamesgovett3225 great memories. I never got to travel the line, only in tourist railway days. 👍😊
Glad i subscribed your videos are awesome mate!
Thank you. Glad you enjoy them 👍 😀
It's a shame the line from Carlsruhe to Bullarto has been removed. Another fantastic informative video. Thanks.
Very happy you enjoyed the video 👍 😊
Loved that last bit. I was sure I was in a train for a second. Lol!
I thought that would be a fitting sign off for the video, dreaming of riding the train over that section again. 👌😀👍

That is the carriage dock. The short siding at the back of the platform. 👍😊

The embankment was covered in gorse up until recently. I see it has now been cleared and is very visible. 👍😀

How many Level Crossings we're on the Daylesford line..?
Probably around 10 or 12 crossings. 👍😀

1.5 hours drive or a couple hours train and bus. I don't know when the N set will be out. It is rare. 👍😀
Another great video, just hop the Daylesford mob can extend their line.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. I hope that it all comes together for the extension also 👍😊
Vary Dry there, thats what causes brush fires.
It's one of the things to be aware of in the Australian countryside. 👍😀
Another victim of the looney report
Yes, unfortunately 😔
