    This does back to the “perfect victim”. If you listen closely to what Lyle is sharing, he is actually proving that the family was problematic and that he could only trust his brother. Here’s the thing about trauma… in order to survive, sometimes survivors literally break their psyche and save the trauma so that their bodies can exist on a daily basis. I don’t think that what he says is the problem, but the communication style which to outsiders may read as “callous”. If only they would have been sweet young white girls constantly crying, believe me… they would have been found “not guilty”.

    • @TheSmokeweeda
      @TheSmokeweeda หลายเดือนก่อน +54

      Bingo to that last part. Just because they were gritty and foul mouthed survivors shouldn’t mean they deserved less sympathy than if they were meek crying girls. Unfortunately, society thinks that if you’re not crying and shriveled up in a corner, then your trauma wasn’t that bad. Men suffer in silence when it comes to abuse… until they snap and kill someone.

And let me tell you, life is not like in the movies. Many times the entire judicial system has a hard time with victims who don’t come off as vulnerable and weak. If a survivor laughs when retelling a traumatic event, they are questioned. In reality people create walls to allow themselves to continue existing. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I urge you to at least research about it. Do you know what the prosecutor said in the Menendez case about them? “Men cannot be raped since they lack the equipment to be raped”. The prosecutor was a woman.

    What's funny to me is how all these people saying Lyle and Erik made the abuse up and killed their parents bc of greed - seriously, if they had planned these murders and were these calculating people yall claim them to be - why the hell were they both so gullible that they got their private confessions taped left and right? Confession tapes from therapist, private conversations taped from this Norma lady, private letters caught by prison security.
    You're telling me these were people capable of planning to murder their parents for MONEY - but at the same time they're okay with yapping about everything on tapes and letters? Sorry, but if you are cold hearted enough to kill for money you won't be dumb to be trusting these strangers with your private thoughts. They were way too eager to trust the wrong people. This persona of "greedy, calculating murderers" that people try to pin on them bc they won't believe the horrific abuse happened just doesn't add up with their actions. You'll always expect from others what you have inside - so a greedy person would also suspect others to be greedy, a calculating person would suspect others to be calculating etc. Yet you have these two brothers BOTH committing the same dumb mistake of trusting random strangers and telling them all their thoughts and agree to being recorded. And it wasn't even to brag about their crimes - which psychopaths like to do, for example - but it was to, one, confess bc Erik was suicidal with guilt, and, two, to have someone to talk to bc of loneliness in Lyle's case with Norma. The narrative of them killing their parents for money just doesn't add up when you observe how they acted...

    I’ve read some comments where some are suggesting they should have run away and didn’t because they enjoyed their riches and luxury life.
    To them: please, when children come from privileged families, they are hugely controlled by their parents; the parents have eyes on them everywhere and anywhere they go. If the father threatened and the mother kept quiet knowing her sons were being sexually abused by her husband, it was a very scary situation for the boys. They still were children of the parents and they had this real sense of fear for their parents. Living luxuriously was a way to live and it had to be done that way because the parents also needed to show the world they are providing so much for them and they were rich. So it became a habit for these boys to live in this way, doesn’t justify why they should have tolerated abuse. They were passively enduring and suffering and from fear they got aggressive and decided to kill- impulsive decision because they wanted to be free from toxic lives and live freely. Who wouldn’t want that? Well we will say- we wouldn’t have done that, but guess what we weren’t in their place so we really don’t know how we would have reacted. They were always shouted at, humiliated and raped by their dad and molested emotionally by mother as well so they had no sense of security and people act in desperate and violent ways to survive.
    I am not justifying murder - parricide! I am just telling you they couldn’t have run away if they ran away and if their story is true, one day or the other they would have been killed to be shut off forever so their parents’ abuse wouldn’t be exposed.

      It’s not a documentary. The show is states it’s BASED on true events, the rest is left to creative interpretation. The way it was written was showing all possibilities/theories of what may have happened. They show the pov of the brothers claims, another pov was those that think they’re guilty and the parents innocent, and then the rumors in between (for example, Erik being gay or the brothers incest).

      He never said that. He says here that the jury believed him because he got so emotional. That was completely misconstrued and people said he’s saying he lied and faked his wll emotions on the stand. How is that in any way what he says here? Of course he wants to be believed - he was facing the death penalty. He’s literally saying “I couldn’t have faked that” essentially, but no, the media took these tapes and misconstrued what he said. You know how the media works - something will be misconstrued and portrayed as fact and everyone will believe it because nobody cares enough to be curious and fact check things. The way it was portrayed in the Monsters series was appallingly inaccurate, just like every other fact of the show.
      They had his former best friend, Donovan Goodreau, on tape admitting to Robert Rand (a journalist) that Lyle had told him about his sexual abuse before the murders. Donovan denied this when he testified for the prosecution, but Lyle’s attorneys played him the tape in court where he can be heard saying it. Donovan still denied it.

    one of the biggest differences from reality and the monsters series is how lyle is portrayed. the netflix series portrays him as a “patrick bateman” character. a psychopathic snob that has no empathy for anyone else. but based off the trial and this call, he just sounds like a normal dude that was going through some hard sh*t.

    • @RitaNathaniel

      netflix doesn't portray him like this. maybe in part, but you are wrong. the anger that is raging in Lyle on the show is because of the pain of the abuse. and he is also portrayed as very loving to Erik, so its not white and black at all on the show, as it wasn't in reality. this is just one short phone call, you don't know how he behaved in private or outside of it. so don't be ridiculous. also, TV show is always only based on real events, and fictionalized, not a documentary.

    For some reason after knowing what I know now, looking at actual footage and words spoken from their mouths. It’s nothing like to the series, that series is for self gain to those who need to paint their own narrative. I really feel for them. They made a really really bad choice and that will never go unnoticed. I wish other steps were taken but I definitely believe sexual abuse was apart of their home. These were wealthy people who didn’t want for anything. This is definitely NOT about money, I believe trauma drove them to their mental illness which impaired their way of thinking. I’m sure lessons were learned. They were so young when they did this. They were tossed in jail like trash when really the guys needed deep therapy, a hug for fuck sake. They have missed so much of the world, prison might be where it’s safer for them. I want them out too but they’ve been detached from the outside world since the 80s. It’s no telling what their mental state would be after a release.
