I understand this is a 9 month old video but just in case there are others who may face this problem. The rust in these tanks becomes a huge problem because of how the bikes fuel filter is set up and how it pumps the fuel. making sure that the tank is rust free is important.
My bikes filter was in pretty bad shape (caked in loose rust) and would cause the bike to cut power at ~5.5k RPM. I cleaned the tank with phosphoric acid which leaves a layer of phosphate helping against rust but as mentioned in the video, the best method to prevent this from happening again and to future proof is to just line the tank.

Nice work Hero. I’ve de-rusted multiple gas tanks in my life. It’s a lot easier these days with a flexible hose on a dremle and a course stone on the end for inside, a some fine grit wet and dry paper for around the top and bottom opening holes. Great job! 👍😎

I do have all the cameras to do it from GoPros to Insta 360 X3’s and my son and daughter have said they’d be happy to do all the editing as they know I have to ride and teach others. Both weren’t born when I was racing however they have seen enough of my racers an various formats including TH-cam. It just comes down to time for me. Perhaps one day I’ll set up a channel. Thanks again.

I love your content, just bought a SV650 (ex-Ulster Grand Prix + other Irish road races). The only thing that does my head in (utube bike vids in general) is people talking with their hands whilst riding. It's not wise and makes me nervous. I recently watched a vid of John McGuinness and Shakey Byrne on a ride out to Cadwell (Bennets BikeSocial channel), I think they were on the bars throughout which says all u need (stand to be corrected). Keep up the great work!

Nice work! I bought 3 x 5 litre bottles of Evapo-rust a while back to use for fuel tanks - expensive if you only ever use it once - but you can rebottle it and use it again and it will completely de rust multiple tanks (plus other parts). Also, in my experience, you only need to seal the tank after cleaning if you have leaks. Thanks for sharing!

Make sure that Rotella has additives for the transmission for bikes, cars and trucks dont share oil with the transmission. The shearing force of gears require extra additive packages.
That Rotella is used with success by many motorcyclists and is approved for use in motorcycle engines which require MA/MA2 standard.

I did my SV1000S tank with vinegar....for 3 weeks! No liner and still no rust. I always keep it full of non-ethanol fuel. If the fuel pump goes try a Quantum pump. Mine has been great for years.
You should get a center stand if available. I needed to put one on my BMW K1200 as the exhaust runs under the bike. Makes for easy rear tire changes. Good filter choice, I love WIX XP Filters, well build.

a bad tank coating can flake off and clog the fuel pump i dont coat if its not too rusty
The problem is most people that experienced that didn’t try to clean it before sealing
I had a tank done with RedCoat at a radiator repair shop, and it was excellent. Stay away from that white stuff.
Just get a different tank. Plenty of sv650s around. Why fuck with a piece of shit tank just get a replacement
That tank should look brand new. I use highest acid vinegar and the whole box of BBs. Swish it around every couple hrs for 3 days looks like brand new.
Evap[orust liquid does a super job of removing rust.

Are you located somewhere warm? The battery seems pretty cheap - i live in Wisconsin and when fall hits, you can run into some pretty cold days where riding is still viable. I have had problems with cheap batteries in the past - not enouch cold cranking amps. I do ride until snow hits the ground, so i need that extra bit of juice on cold days.
You're tank cleaning was fine, besides that's what fuel filters are for. :)

Ya know, most track day orgs require the kick stand be taken off or zip tied to the frame for all groups except novice. On my SV I zip tie it for tech inspection but then it magically breaks during the first session. I go alone to most track days and trying to get it on the stand after a long session is a huge pita.
I have a 09sv s I got from a buddy with less than 10k and garage kept for 3,500$ I think I wanna go full track with it

Question, why did you decide for the sv650 and didn't got an 600cc 4 cylinders like the CBR600RR ?
SV is cheaper (if I crash less $$ wasted), and way easier to ride (less power is a good thing, better torque for coming out of corners, lighter weight as well.
@@HeroRR I'm thinking about start on track too but a SV now I'm looking on marketplace are around 3k, 2008 not prepared, same price I'm watching R6 2003 and others equivalent also the ninja 650. A little confused to decide with one lol
Instead of BBs I would have used 1/4 inch sized sharp-edged gravel. All those edges really scrape scale and rust off a lot more effectively, where BBs literally have no edges so they don't do much. You can get this type of gravel very cheaply at landscape supply stores.
We always used to use a length of chain, or a huge handful of nuts and bolts.

One lesson I've learned in life is that even if you haven't spent hours and hours researching the perfect way to do something, it's better to just do a "version 1.0" and go for it, and then refine your tools/technique/materials etc. on the next version. (And then on top of that I try to remind myself that most things in life take at least three versions to get it right, so don't get discouraged) Along the way you'll learn way more/deeply about what you're doing anyways, that you wouldn't have learned anyways just from studying.

A couple bottles of coke go a long way with rust removal. Try it next time and youll be pleasantly surprised. Just let it soak for 12-24 hours and then flush with water a couple of times.

@@HeroRR You can do it with irons, Motion Pro makes great tire tools. Harbor freight sells a balancer.

Isn't gonna do jack? The safety-wired clamp that is clamping the oil filter will not prevent the oil filter from rotating in the unlikely event that it loosens from vibration? 🙄
