Here's a list of items you can check for a safe track ride:
    - valve adjustment (easy for the front cyclinder with the radiator off)
    - new fork oil, and check the seals
    - condition of the front brake master cylinder, and change seals if necesary
    - dito to the rear brake master cylinder
    - condition of the brake pistons and seals
    - condition of the fuel injectors, clean if necesary
    - condition of the admision body, clean if necesary
    - rear sprocket bumpers?? check if there is any play
    - find the cause of radiator internal rust, check for any leaks in the system
    - if rust is inside the fuel tank, you can try electrolysis...and check the fuel pump condition and change it if necesary
    - check and change if necesary, fuel filter
    - finally, check all the moving parts for any abnormal movement (i.e. find any bad bearings all around)
    - ride safely, and enjoy the experience!

Rear sprocket bumpers are called 'cush drive rubbers' individually or just the cush drive for the whole assembly together. All good top advice ⬆️ btw. I just wanted to help your terminology to keep you right.

I'd also recommend electrolysis on that tank. It's simple, cheap, and works really well. There are youtube tutorials on it. Follow that up with a tank sealant.

just a quick tip run the vinegar with the distilled water 50/50mix through the whole system do not have to remove the radiator.
the reason you do that is because i bet there is rust water were the water pump is. you will have to repeat the process several times to flush the rust and vinegar residue.

For the radiator, run it with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and vinegar for like 20 mins( till operating temps), rinse and repeat a few times. That should help with the radiator problem.

I’m kinda amazed you found so orange much rust in the cooling system, as far as I know there are very few steel/ferrous parts in the cooling circuit (I can only think of two off the top of my head). Your water necks in the cylinders near the thermostat might be truly rotted to nothing. Worth checking before you push it on track. Very nice bike!

I few minor scuffs but looks and runs like new. I get complements on it all the time. I paid 1,600 Canadian for it. Worth ever penny I spent. Gems these bikes are...

I used 8% malt vinegar for my R1 tank. Did the trick. Several flushes then neutralised with baking soda and water. Flushed with petrol and then filled with clean petrol. Then sprayed a load of WD40 in to create a mist in the tank and coat any remaining bare metal. No rusting has come back in 4 years.

I'm running a shortened and gutted LeoVince SBK Evo 2 can as IMO they sound the best staright from shelf and my whole exhaust from headers through have been Cerakoted (my profession) to allow for better oxygen scavenging from Cylinders and obviously to retain those EGTs so as to get them out the pipe quicker. Otherwise it must be said....I've had my sv from new in 2010 and since then many motorcycle have come and gone but not this one.

Outside price, wouldn't you be more interested in going the R7 route and having a better machine right off the bat?
Anyway.... get your shock serviced, fork oil changed, updated seals. Or you can grab a ZX-10R shock for the rear and get some emulators or Ohlins cartriges for the forks.
Exhaust options? Get a full-system M4. More breathing? Sprint filter. ECU flashed to eliminate restrictions (get your secondaries functioning optimally).

I heard that if tires are past their recommended date of use but have been stored properly prior to use they can still be good providing they look and feel to be of sound quality, but then probably better to be safe than sorry.

I'm really happy you got yourself a trackbike , this sv 650 is indeed track oriented... There are some issues though... To me, it looks like it was abandoned, the first time it drain the coolant...
Actually what you found inside the radiator is that gluey thing when oil mixes with coolant 😕
So... although it looks like a track ready bike, you still have to take the engine apart and wash off all that grease bulb that is inside the engine block... that is a lot of work, but I really appreaciate your style of videos, so I guess there are a lot more to come... 👌

I use this in the cooling system, in between race season, but not whilst on the track, distilled water only. Evapo-Rust Thermocure Cooling System Rust Remover & Flush
    Consider an aftermarket Rad!
As others have mentioned check the Forks, have they got the correct springs, emulators and oil, for your riding style? The rear shock should be refreshed after 2 years or 30hrs use and also set to your riding style.
Tyres and suspension are the key. You can have the fastest bike in the World, if it rides like a pig, then all the ponies are wasted!! 😉🏍💨😎

  • @rogersmith3149
    @rogersmith3149 ปีที่แล้ว

I see the bike still has stock exhaust. If you are considering replacing it, I would recommend checking with the track you intend to ride to see if they have sound restrictions. Here in the northeast there are two great tracks that have strict sound restrictions so I have left the stock exhaust on my SV.

Absolutely get some new tires on there, those may be ok for the street but tire design has come a long way in 12 years if nothing else, I use Dunlop Q3 and Q4 on my SV650 on track. As a new track rider you will make mistakes and new sticky tires and correct pressure tires will save you, cheap insurance. I put a gsxr 600 rear wheel on my SV which allows wider and stickier 180 series tire. Also go to the Yamaha Champions school and take their on line course, the best $50 you will ever spend. Also your shock probably needs a gas charge.

That rust is not just a radiator issue. Plus I do believe that there was a trace of oil in the original drainings.
Running just water in the system will cause catastrophic damage to the cylinder liners. Those coolant additives are there for a reason. The previous owner seems to have been obvious to that fact.
Whole system needs to be cleaned out. It’s possible that the damage is more extensive. And the water pump could be damaged by the residue circulating!
This is why we don’t run engines until we’ve checked everything. That includes the coolant system.
Every time I see a bike restoration video from the USA, I can pretty much guarantee that the ‘will it run?’ ethos will hold sway over good practice, common sense and preservation of mechanical integrity.
Those god botherers with beards are the worst. I’m disappointed that you gave into the temptation. Yes, it’s not a Honda, so…, but this is probably the best Suzuki. Time will tell I guess.
