    years ago Frank Zane promoted a device with similar action as the cable squats Doug is suggesting.
    Rics corner series is a masters degree course for everybody .!!!!

      You must be talking about Frank Zane's Leg Blaster? I bought one in 2007 and have been using it ever since; it's the only way I can do squats now in my old age.

      @richbrake9910 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CaneFu I had a Zane Blaster in the 1990s. In fact, I bought it from Zane himself, but anyway, it is much better than doing conventional barbell squats.

      @CaneFu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richbrake9910 I haven't been able to do barbell squats since my early 20s because of lower back and knee issues. Another leg machine I was able to pickup that works really well is a Soloflex Rocket which has the same feel as the 1980s Nautilus leg press. As the years pile up (65 now) I have had to become more creative to keep working out.

    This video and the shoulder one with Doug were some of the most informative bodybuilding videos I've ever watched. Definitely gonna try the cable squats!

    I miss Doug so much. I got a great idea from him for a version of the sissy squat using a dipping belt, a length of chain or cable and a hook fixed to a wall. It allows me to do the exercise without worrying about balancing, superb.

    Love the videos Ric. Definitely love listening to all the different guests you have, but I can't get enough of Doug Brignole, Jerry Brainum, and Rich Piana; I always think I know so much about bodybuilding until listening to them and realize I don't haha.
    I can watch the videos about the glory days of bodybuilding and all the exercise methods and nutrition from back in the day. Would be great if there were some new videos about that (*cough, cough, nudge, nudge*) haha.
    Keep up the great videos!

    After watching most all of ric/Doug YT videos I felt obligated to purchase Doug's book. Doug is giving away the basics here on ric's channel but the book explains the theory in detail. As a 70 year old who spent the last 30+ years in gyms I'm not concerned about how it looks to others. Cable squats have removed the fear of aggravating L5/S1 discs. This alone is worth the price of the book.

    Sissy Squats are mentioned, and it seems that they are quite similar to Cable Squats. My Question is this, what is the best method for doing Sissy Squats? Lots of videos on TH-cam, so it would be nice to have Mr. Brignole's opinion on how contorted you can become with Sissy Squats, and stay within Brignole's parameters. Thanks much.

    Thanks for the video Ric, and all the others. I'm hooked on all your golden era information. In the theme of your video, what's your thoughts on hip belt squats? I've always found them much easier on the low back and knees and a much more thorough quad workout, from the perspective of a not so great squatter.

    So? Tom Platz wasted time doing squats, right?

  • @dudeman209
    @dudeman209 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Knees over toes is a problem if you have shit ankle mobility. If your ankle mobility is good enough to where you can stay planted while your knees come over your toes, you're fine. But most people don't wanna do the accompanying mobility work required to squat to full depth correctly.

    I work out at home, I don't have access to cables. I'm 48 years old just started working out 2 years ago from a long lay off, I was a marathon runner for many years, but now back to lifting hardcore. I love the squat, and it's all I have because I work out at home. The heaviest I go is 225lbs, but only for about 6 reps. I do have a leg extension machine as well. I will start incorporating sissy squats. If I don't exceed 300lbs for the barbell squat and focus more on higher reps, do you think I would still be damaging my spine?

    hip belt squat question!
    when you're doing hip belt squats: is it bad for your back if it's rounded? If it is,why? :S

    • @collinjohnson7006
      @collinjohnson7006 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully you see this, but we know that your body is stronger isometrically than it is when it is contracting. When you lock your muscles into a position they're very strong. Now when you start out a squat with a straight back, your spinal Erectors are able to take the weight just fine and if your back hurts when you squat properly there is something seriously wrong. Even when your back is tilted slightly in the squat it is fine because those muscles are very strong, so long as your back is straight and tour muscles are isometrically contracted. Now, when you go down into a squat and your back is straight until the bottom of the squat and your back rounds, that causes those muscles to stretch from their shorter and isometrically stronger position and much of that weight will be placed on to the spinal erectors. When your back rounds at the bottom of the squat and then you come back out from the bottom of the squat, your back straightens up and that means those muscles have shortens and in order to do so they have taken much of the stress of the weight. Aside from the muscles, the joints in your back begin to open up and expose discs. The worst thing you can do is stop squatting, just make sure you do them with good form and very safely.
