    Doug is an interesting interview, it's great when you have him on. His views on light weight and very high reps as well as higher carbs are interesting and they clearly work for him. Low Carb with refeeds (the anabolic diet) works much better for me. A great interview, have him on again. I watch the Doug and Jerry episodes multiple time since they go through so much info in such a sort time.

      +BenoniSasquatch I wonder if his type of diet would work for an endomporh or a person with a quote "slower" metabolism. Sounds interesting.

      For me, of course I can gain muscle with higher carbs, but I feel I put on too much fat, and every macro has to be watched with great care. For losing fat on higher carbs I have to cut so low that I get weak and lose muscle and end up flabby instead of cut. I'm an Endomorph, naturally wide, can easily put on and maintain muscle and fat. The problem is losing fat, and for me Low Carb/Keto/Anabolic Diet works very well. But everyone is different, try out his diet. The worst that could happen is you don't lose any fat, and maybe gain some fat, but you would add muscle too. Try it for 2-3 months and see what works. If it does not get you cut, then you've learned something about yourself and can make an informed choice for the next thing to try. It's all about trying new things.

      BenoniSasquatch man I´ve tried almost everything under the sun to be honest. I noticed so many interesting things with carbs. I´m not a true endomorph nor an ecto. For me if I do low carbs I waste away to nothing and end up chubby instead of ripped. If you knew how often I tried low carb/moderate fats and for some reason it does not work on me like it did years ago. Logically I should have been ripped especially considering my training frequency but with fats instead of carbs my body becomes stagnant very fast. I train twice a day most days and do quite a bit of cardio on top I guess that´s why I became more of a "carb" guy. I just need carbs with my training regimen or I go superflat and extremely catabolic.It might be the exact szenario doug described here...High cortisol-catabolic-muscle loss...But I´ve never really tried high carb and absolutely ZERO fat cause I always thought fat has to be in the diet to function optimally. The idea of "fat cycling" about one day with fats to restore hormonal function sounds super interesting. I´ll try that for sure. Let the carbs fuel my training for 3-4 days still burn fat and then include fats with the carbs to fill out.

      +FLEXPRO93 Ecto-mesomorph here. I do a full body w/o 1x/wk. and eat nothing before except some beet juice and free form (Amino 9 Essentials) aminos and some herbal/ Yerba Mate combo tea. The w/o takes 2 or 3hrs and then I eat just complex carbs and protein. No fat so I can digest faster and without dietary fat induced insulin resistance. Per Arthur Jones, the bod prefers this to hitting the weights more often and inducing daily metabolic stress. On all other days I eat high whole food fats (mostly vegan but sometimes raw eggs), moderate protein and low glycemic carbs. Few like to do that regularly, but cycles in well to break monotony.

    Thanks Ric for yet another fantastic video (they are all great). I'm 43 years old and have been a Personal Trainer for about 15-20 yrs. It's of great comfort to watch videos like this and know that the advice that I have been giving over the years is correct.
    Doug Brignole seems like a great guy. His approach to bodybuilding is much like my own. Though there are many ways to approach bodybuilding, as we get older we make adjustments.
    Watching these videos, it's great to see that most of us, after many years of training, are on the same page. Cheers.

    Great info Ric1 I purchased Doug's book The Physics of Fitness and it is fantastic! It is so well written and makes so much logical sense that I am amazed how misinformed I have been. I can say it is worth far more that the $50. Ii am 59 years young and back to the gym for almost 2 years after 20 years off. And can honestly say that this book has made my workouts so much better and enjoyable because I am not in near the pain I was because I was doing so many things that were a waste of effort. I now know that I am getting so much more out of my effort. Great job Doug! Keep up the great work Ric!!

    Great information. A replacement for the squat the hip belt squat is great. You can go heavy with minimum stress on the back . I personally found studying the structure and activation of muscles is the key to effective training. In the old days without the internet getting such information was difficult to obtain. Today with the internet that information is easy to obtain and apply in my training. I wish he would have stated his caloric intake during the days he discussed.

  • @SamGuthrie1977
    @SamGuthrie1977 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If posture is in alignment and the should girdle is adequately stable, you can do shoulder presses.
    However, most people have weak scapula adductors and weak external rotators from too much sitting, driving, and typing. The nervous system then develops faulty engrams from this chronic activity, posture suffers, and muscle imbalances develop. Joints then no longer sit in their instantaneous axis of rotation, and injury eventually occurs.
    Fix posture, strengthen the shoulder girdle, and stretch the tonic muscle groups which is almost always the anterior muscle groups, hip flexors, and internal rotators. In addition, strengthen the posterior chain, and external rotators. This opens the body back up, puts you in alignment, and allows you to do nearly any exercise you want.
    Also, joints and connective tissue need certain micronutrients to rebuild after training: primarily calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3, phosphorus, and zinc.

      +SamGuthrie1977 Very true S.G.. A radical departure from modern, conventional sedentia is hugely important. Also, raw foods, consumption of the full spectrum of vits and mins (especially from foods), a good source of omega 3's and possibly hydrolyzed collagen can make all the difference. Hard to avoid cooked food, but cooked meat especially digests dirty as do all cooked animal proteins and cause uric acid crystals and other indigestive junk to build up all over. Helps a lot to ferment whatever you have to eat cooked (like legumes) and sprout all grains, soak nuts and seeds in a high phytase solution. Enzymes in these "live foods" change the whole equation!

    I contend that it's feasible and effective to avoid heavy weights altogether by substituting intensity. That is, perfect form with super slow technique will give a more thorough stimulation than heavy, which cannot not stimulate muscle adequately since it's hard or impossible to do with perfect form and it's not enough reps for adequate muscle and nerve and circulation recruitment.

    Good stuff. Ric you guys always talk about Bill Pearls gym. There was a gym in La Mesa Ca. owned by Bill Golumbic (not sure on the spelling of his last name). It was originally called Valley Barbell, then Parkyay Way Fitness. Excelent equipment Bill designed, but Bill ran it like the old school owners you talk about. He use to quote Bill Pearl, and he had a brother somewhat like Pearls brother. Bill passed on, the gym was sold and desolved, but I always think about him and the gym when listening to you.

    Eating to immediately restore your muscle glycogen is not necessary. Your body maintains normal blood glucose constantly through gluconeogenesis. The glycogen will be restored throughout the day. If you become hypoglycemic after a workout, you are consuming too many carbs before the workout, or you may be pre-diabetic. I've been fat adapted for several years and have no problem gaining muscle consuming little carbs. The carbs help swell the muscles quicker, but they are not necessary. I work out at 5:00 am, and don't eat until 7:00pm most days, and I've never been hypoglycemic. However, I still think Doug is THE MAN 😉

    To the legpress part: Doug says one should place he feet as low as possible on the plate. But if you do this, your knees will heavily look over the toes (I don't know how to describe this correctly in english) which causes a lot of stress to the knee joints. Do you think this is not a problem?

    • @himelodykek
      @himelodykek 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      naturally, we should be able to overheadpress and squat ... but because of our shit postures, sitting all the time bad habits etc etc most of us develop bad mobility problems. If it is uncomfortable, don't do it, it would be an error to fight it, there are always replacement exercises. However, if I were you, I'd work on the flexibility, just to be fully functional!

    • @murozman
      @murozman 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      himelodykek
      The human body did evolve to squat yes but not to overhead press. It makes no sense from a biomechanical view point. Why carry weight over your head as this is unstable and you can handle less? The deltoids help you to either carry weight on your shoulders or hold it against your chest. The overhead lift puts you at a leverage disadvantage, it's not natural.

    • @himelodykek
      @himelodykek 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      murozman I may not have the degrees to back it up, but I know my body given over 15 years of training in different sports and like you said I feel that overhead pressing is not natural and feels awkward. I don't know why it is hyped so much. However, you still should be able to do it, you are supposed to be able to lift your hands over your head and carry something without pain.

    • @TrapBarWith41.5cmSleeves
      @TrapBarWith41.5cmSleeves 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      murozman *"Why carry weight over your head?"*
      No one asks you to. However good luck finding easier movement to put things on higher level than your eyes.
      *"It makes no sense from a biomechanical view point."; "The overhead lift puts you at a leverage disadvantage, it's not natural."*
      Sorry but you're making no sense. Leverage disadvantage? Towards what? Having weight higher from ground is ALWAYS disadvantageous towards stability. But every exercise is creating "disadvantage". You're pushing against the gravity, that's how you create work for your muscles to get stronger / grow. OHP not natural? Because you say so?
      Your definitions of what is natural to humans are flawed because there is nothing to back it up with. What is NOT natural is to sit/lie all day etc. And from this come problems and form issues. I laughed at the guy on 3:45. *"When did a primate ever have to do a pull over?... Never"* - the guy doesn't even realize what he's just said. Primate HAD to do a pull over style movement EVERY TIME he climbed somewhere. Now I'm not saying pull over is good or bad, obviously primate haven't been doing front levers or pull overs, but using the logic as "if primate did it - it's natural" is just wrong. You can debate almost every exercise like this and make up why it's not natural.

    • @himelodykek

      oh really ? squating to the ground and putting your hand overhead without pain is not natural? you don't even need a study to understand this.

    At 13:55 he said the leg press slede is at 15 degrees so you only get 15% of the weight on the machine, Sorry Doug, but the force=mg sin (theta) so sine (15) is 0.25 so its about 25% of the weight. sine 90 is 1 so when it above you its the full weight.

    A lot of great info but don't know if I'd agree with the whole lose muscle on a low carb diet thing. I went keto for 4 months and didn't lose any muscle. I was definitely flat but it's pretty easy to carb back up. Either way great stuff. Love the show Ric.

    • @CleverDjembe

      TheQuickyouknow I dropped noticeable fat AND muscle. It seems people respond differently to lowered carbs. Were you natural? I was.

    • @TheQuickyouknow
      @TheQuickyouknow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CleverDjembe Yes I was/am natural. You don't need carbs to keep muscle. I think the biggest mistake people make is they look as keto as a low carb diet. It is technically but in all honesty you're simply switching out on energy source for another. A lot of people also take in way too much protein (which can keep you from keto adapting). Not to mention some people don't take in enough fats to cover the carbs they took out. When I went keto I dropped my protein from like 200g to about 80g sometimes even 60g a day and I didn't lose muscle because I took in more fats.
      Also most people think they have more muscle than they really do so when they drop the carbs and deplete for a few weeks they think they're losing muscle but the fact is all they lost was intramuscular water. Not saying that's your case but it is for a lot of people.

    • @CleverDjembe
      @CleverDjembe 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheQuickyouknow tha's interesting but I just cant believe that a low carb, low protein diet is in any way muscle-sparing if I dont see studies on it. I ate plenty of fat and protein on my diet and lost 3/4 an inch off my arm, which I of course gained back after dieting, but still...

      CleverDjembe Just a thought, maybe you didn't lose any actual muscle (tissue) maybe you just lost glycogen? And the point I was trying to make is that keto is not exactly low carb. Being keto adapted means your body uses fat as it's main source of energy. Being fully keto adapted means you're not dependent on carbs. You basically always have a source of fat whether it's in your body or your diet therefore your body shouldn't need to use your protein for energy because you ALWAYS has a better energy source. Plus fats are a far slower burning energy source than carbs so your body rarely needs to break down muscle for energy.
      There's plenty of information out there. But I'd say for 99% of people who do a TRUE keto diet and think they're losing a lot of muscle it's usually just water. I can dumb 10lbs of water and a 1/2 on my arms in just 1 week of keto. Personally I don't care because I can get it all back once I put the carbs back in.

    What kind of cadence is used when doing 50 reps? Normally I take about 5 seconds to complete one rep but that would mean that 1 set would take 4 minutes.

    You need the high reps and the low reps even Matt wenning training philosophy is like that

    I also agree that you need to do both high reps and low reps to get the best results in strength and size. But, I start heavy while I have the most strength and energy, then I up my reps and lower my weight set after set. Starting with high reps and pyramiding down to low reps doesn't make much sense. You won't have any strength by the time you get down to your heavy sets, Or at least as much as you would have starting out going heavy with low reps. Just my opinion.

      I just went back and read my comment and realized I meant the complete opposite.. lol I guess I was just over thinking it at the time. Cause pretty much all my workouts consist of doing reverse pyramids hahaha. I meant to say that. I start out light and build up to my heavy sets, then I go back down sometimes to get a lil extra volume and pump in there.

    I was working night shifts on hotel reception for 6 months straight, i was eating at normal time all the meals beside the breakfast
    I came home every day at 7 am, workout for 1h, go to sleep till 3pm and than i had my breakfast
    So i didn`t eat right after my workout i just sleep for 8h and than i was eating a firs meal and you know what i never been so big and muscular like that summer
    My opinio is that its all depend of genetics..If i would use sugar after my workout i will just get fat
    I don`t have a fast metabolism but i gain muscule very easy even if i do 5X5, 5/3/1, 12/10/8/6-8 for me is the same i get strong and big with heavy or lighter weight
    I am not that genetic guy 1:1000 who have fast metabolisam can gain muscule easily and be muscular without workout, i can be fat can be skinny i can gain muscule very fast and lose it fast i think that this is part of a human evolution, get muscule when you need for survive (work) and lose it when youre hungry (don`t have a job) because the big muscule mass consume a lot of energy
