Here Comes a Thought is actually way deeper when you find out that it was literally there because of how Estelle (Garnet's VA) helped Rebecca with mindfulness exercises. @@alex-rs6ts I've just become aware this metaphor wasn't known by English-speakers everywhere. Blue is kinda like crying tears or rain in context, and I use gray to describe someone morally questionable like an anti-hero.
They're called The Both if anybody wants to take a listen. I recommend listening to their songs Milwaukee, The Prisoner, and Hummingbird. my favorites of theirs.
I am still convinced that Love like you is sung to greg by rose. Things like "what makes you think I'm so special", "i think you're so good and I'm nothing like you" and her singing about how the person she's singing to is waiting for her (like greg was in I think I need a little change) seems to resonate more with a Gem who has always been treated as special by everyone around her finally encountering someone who liked her for her, not her ideals of her standing. To the other gems she was either the leader of the crystal gems or a diamond. to Greg she was just rose. To Greg she was this incredible person for no reason like who she used to be and the things she did in the past.
I thought it was Rose to Steven, from beyond the grave. “I could even learn how to love like you,” sounds like Rose comparing herself to Steven. I could see why it could be her singing to Greg, though.
10:14 after the SUF finale, that monotone "He left his family behind." Makes so much more sense. It was Garnet using her future vision, kinda sad in a way.
I agree. It's Over, Isn't It is my personal favorite, though I can see why all the others could be said to be higher, except for Independent Together. Though amazing, I completely disagree with anyone who says it's better than It's Over, Isn't It. Also, hot take, I'm not that big a fan of Stronger Than You. While I can concede that it deserves S tier, I think it should be at the bottom, maybe just above Independent Together, but even then I'm not sure.
I honestly liked how Rose Quarts went from "mother figure and freedom fighter" to "irresponsible and morally questionable young adult" throughout the course of the series
I kinda find it sad. We learned that she was both good and bad ( which is a creative move because you don't often see this in movies where the protagonist's parents are always god-like good ), but after the movie it felt like they only wanted to show her bad side, so they could give a series a big scapegoat. But no, why make White, a gem Nazi, the bad guy and leave Rose as a morally gray person when you can do this? I'm curious about what happened in reality, without the "she was so good" or "she was so bad" sunglasses on my eyes. Edit: English isn't my first language.
@@redpanda6497 That's what I don't get... Like, they do know that she WAS a horrible person? Does nothing that came after mattered? What about the tape of Lion 3??? Does Steven really hate her so much despite her literally dying for him to exist? I agree that she isn't the best, maybe not even decent. But she redeemed, looking at the later acts of the cronology and idk why they don't acknowlegde that in the series
*I don't even watch Steven Universe, but HOLY SHIT, **_STRONGER THAN YOU_** IS SO FUCKING AMAZING AND **_IT'S OVER, ISN'T IT_** MAKES ME FEEL SO EMOTIONAL, BRUUUUHHHH*
What? I’m not doing anything.. *slowly drags “What Can I Do For You” to C Tier* Also here’s some clarification for “True Kinda Love”: I don’t really think it fits in either but I believe it doesn’t fit at all because I think it’s supposed to resemble how when you face the truth, then you can start to love yourself again. *SPOILER ALERT* Since Spinel wanted to put blame on others to justify her actions, she wasn’t facing the truth that what she was doing was wrong and she needed to live herself again (we can tell she didn’t love herself because when Spinel was starting to cool down in her last fight with Steven she cried about how she was worthless). Garnet already loves herself so she is most likely singing this to teach Spinel about that love.
I think true kind of love is also kind of referencing The End of Evangellion where its the soft almost up beat song over the end of the fucking world, but the theme of Komm Susser Todd and True Kinda Love are extremely different
Rose was a shitty person but that’s mostly because we saw her character growth backwards. We started with her being a good person and as the series went on we learned about her horrible past (which if you think about it she’s literally a child so idk if she deserves all the criticism, tho she definitely a bad person). I personally don’t like how he let his hatred for the character cloud his judgment of some songs (diamonds included) but hey to each their own.
agreed. i personally like Rose/Pink BECAUSE of her character growth. yes we see it in reverse, but if you mentally play it the right way its excellent, and it officially ends with her giving up her 'life' so that Steven could be born. yes Pink was awful, but she learns and grows. also (i forget who said this) but honestly i think she would have gone back for Spinel, if it wasn't for,......yanno...the WAR and the fact going back for her could have shown Rose was still alive (as from what i can see only Pink and maybe Pearl knew where her garden was) and that could have put the few remaining gems in danger D8
For me she's my favorite character because she's the most well written she has goals, flaws the whole shabang.but she is still a shitty person(but then again most characters are in this show)
You beautifully put into words how her development is actually shown backwards! But unfortunately people will have that mentality that mistakes are unforgivable and that people just can't change for the better, which is obviously a lie. The hate thrown at her is very unjustified considering all the sacrifices she made, and having a character so intricately developed makes it such an interesting story to follow. People complain about 'flat' and boring characters and then they try to cancel a fictional character for making reasonable mistakes with good intentions xD
Pink Diamond is my favorite SU character because I relate to her in many ways, so seeing people shit on her so much and forgive the other diamonds kinda hurts.. like she was abused, abandoned, and just wanted the gems to be themselves. She’s not a perfect person because who is. But she did her best, not in a good way, but she did...
If I had a nickel for everytime Garnet started singing about love to the the big bad shortly after fusing while the world was ending, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but its weird that it happened twice
@@just_pluto_ I mean, to be fair that is the _perfect_ taunt for Jasper given... Everything about who she was as a person and also how she looked at Garnet?
I'm in both fandoms, but I still would've travelled back in time just to delete the Stronger Than You parody. What a trainwreck that was. (Not the video, but the aftermath)
Very VERY happy with top two but I think that “Familiar” didn’t get a shot. That song is the perfect number for Steven’s realization that he is living through his mom’s past while still being himself. As himself he “has the practice” to fix her mistakes. It’s such a beautiful foreshadow to all the stress and pressure that overwhelms him in season 5 and is the perfect mix of him coming to terms with needing to be like his mom while also saying IM NOT HER, IM BETTER.
The thing I liked about SU is the show growing up with me. I admit it’s not without its faults *cough* (Change your mind) *cough* but I liked the arcs with characters, I just wish we had more of SU Future and less fillers. I don’t remember any show getting me hyped about the What Ifs. The mystery and lore was interesting. I just think a few more season to actually do the plot would’ve been great. On the less toxic side of the fandom I made many friends and got me and others through some tough stuff. Thank you Steven Universe. You will be missed.
Change your mind was good, it had an excellent climax and I really come to understand White diamond as a character, I also love the symbolism and parallels that were set between her and Pink diamond , they both have to be set to a unbelievable high standard partly because of an image they themselves set to the other gems and their pedestal was broken both metaphorically (rose monuments and reds being destroyed and on ruins while the truth about her was revealed she was a diamond all along and White being proven to have been won’t and the pedestal she was standing in was literally destroyed by Steven while she made her realize how wrong she was about everything)
You’d be surprised how big G-G-G-Ghost can go over with kids when you put an overacting theater kid in charge of singing it... that song was a HUGE hit when I was interning at a Children’s Home! Sure they were mocking me most of the time, but it made them laugh, so that song will always have a special place in my heart ❤️
“What can I do for you” was such a great song! Oh my gosh I’m screaming at my phone right now lol I love this song mainly because it’s obviously meant to be a love some between Greg and Rose but Rose’s lyrics that are meant to be written by her point out her flaws beautifully. And she doesn’t even know these are flaws! It’s a deep song with a lot of undertones to it.
i thought ‘being human’ was a perfect song to end the show. after everything steven had been through he finally got to just be human and move on. it’s such a gentle song and i thought it captured how bittersweet it was to watch steven drive away from his home.
Yeah, maybe im a little biased since i generally like songs like that more, but i think this was the best song to end it off on. a slow, calming song to let you digest that the show really just ended.
Change is one of the best written songs in Steven Universe. From a musician’s standpoint, it blessed me ears. The brass is mind-blowing and Zach’s vocal range is beautiful. If i could have to listen to a song for the rest of my life it would be this.
jam_ buddies The song is also super empowering. Which may also be why it’s so amazing. The visuals in the song are stunning. The movie ended up having a much higher budget and time which brought this masterpiece of a two-minute song. Talking about music is pretty much my life so I’m glad you enjoy my ranting lmao
i cant believe you put ‘what can i do for you’ so low at the same time u said rose sucks. like yeah that’s the point she’s really creepy in that song in retrospect. ‘i like the way humans play, i like playing along’ its haunting foreshadowing, not to mention that the scene demonstrates the feud between pearl and greg perfectly when pearl fuses with rose. one of my favorites in the show.
Same I agree with everything you said. Great vocals, interesting aesthetic, cool fusion, lovely visuals, creepy foreshadowing. this man be having some garbage tastes smh Cannot believe he put that blue diamond song over “what can I do for you” Good vid, but lord
I love "Rather be me with you" because it's one of those types of songs that you can sing to people who haven't watched steven universe, you can sing it on the fly too, cause it doesn't really rely on the scene (like some of the other SU songs). Plus, it's the first song from a show that I learned to play on my guitar
Didn’t agree with most of this list, but there were a lot of valid points throughout the entire video! I may have different opinions, but this video is still a good one with a lot of effort!
I know that everyone hates rose because she was a bad person and all that. But I dont know if im the only one here that watched a video were they say that they show us rose evolution backwards and from that point foward I really liked her character. Oh, and i almost forgot. Nice video dude
Totally agree. She's still super flawed, but if you look at everything chronologically, she's definitely less bad of a character than people think, although she's definitely done some unforgivable stuff
she, some would say, is a really bad person - - but that's the point of her character. She adds so much to the story and to Steven's character development as a protagonist - - with Rose being the antagonist... anyway, Steven has grown up with the problems his mother created, and it's his job to fix them.
@@PJEllison, I wouldn’t say she’s a bad person. Since Volleyball, her character suddenly makes much more sense: she was so horrified by what she did to Pink Pearl that it caused her powers to change. After that, she tried to distance herself from everyone so she would never hurt them, hence the Spinel incident: she left Spinel there because she thought being with her would be more dangerous for Spinel. In NWOFA, we see that she tried to remain distanced to Pearl (which doesn’t work) Even though she was Rose Quartz, Pink Diamond’s guilt never left her until the very end. Thousands of years later, she was still conflicted about it, as we know through Greg.
I have never seen a single episode of SU, but the harmony and visual story telling of Something Entirely New is so strong and perfect it got me teary eyed with no context at all. The way they hum in the end, harmonizing with each other into a piccardy third is so beautiful.
You should watch it. Though lower your expectations for Season 4 and just accept Season 5. If you don't like either, the Movie is fantastic and clears up some of the issues. Future is also good for what it was.
@@mira-wall the point is that she was a bad person, she doesn't even deny she did regretful things, but she did spend the rest of her life protecting earth and literally becoming a better person, Steven.
I think the only reason people hate PD is that we saw her story backward she became a better person when she became Rose so basically pink diamond was a bad person but rose quartz was... eh mediocre.
I always interpreted “Love Like You” as being sung by Rose to Greg. She’s just so fundamentally different from him the “nothing like you” really comes across. (And tbh I don’t know if she ever really saw Pearl as a whole person rather than just a cute pet 😒)
I actually really liked "change your mind". I first heard it at a time in my life when I needed a simple song like that. I remember bawling my eyes out to it. At that time I had came out to my mom and didn't get a good reaction, and that song just was like a reminder that I don't need other people to accept me as long and I love myself
Im so sad that "Change Your Mind" is so low because that song made me feels so many emotions despite its length. I think maybe because i care a lot of what people think of me and it took me awhile to come to a place where i loved me and thats ultimately what mattered so that song spoke to me deeply. Also i love the Sadie songs
Aaaaaah, thank you! 💖 "Change Your Mind" makes me think about accepting myself and at the same time leaving open doors for people who don't accept but want to understand you either way because you love each other.
Me: *seeing stronger than you than you at number 2* "The heck is number 1 then?" Also me: *seeing here comes a thought at number 1* "Nope nevermind I'm completely okay with this anything I said before hand is completely invalid."
Here Comes A Thought was also, like, the only song where they let Estelle actually use the full range of her voice. Her harmonization in that song sends chills down my spine no matter how many times I listen to it.
Was fully expecting “It’s over, isn’t it?” To be Number 1 since it seems to be so popular. So when I saw that “Here comes a thought”, my favorite Steven Universe song ever, is Number 1, I got a big, dumb smile on my face. Thanks for making my day, Schaff.
I think "True Kind Of Love" was like that on purpose. We see disaster, but we also see the community coming together. We see the people and gems of Beach City shaken up, but nobody is panicking. The bond within the community is another "True Kind Of Love". This is in contrast to Spinel, alone atop the injector, with all of the power. And between these two groups, we see Steven. Reaching out and offering that love to Spinel.
The song “like a Star” and “fifteen minutes” are what got me into Mike Krol and beachy punk music and I honestly think that the lyrics in the first are really clever. Love u shafrillas!
Regarding a lot of the "bad" songs... in context, they are often just Steven or others playing around and having fun. I don't consider most of them official "songs" myself. Also, I will agree to disagree with you on a lot of the placement lol. I would have rated "Why So Blue" a little higher and a lot of the Sadie Killer and the Suspects songs at least towards the middle. "I'm just a Comet" and "Who We Are" both make my top ten. I love Bismuth's vocals on the latter.
9:10 one of the other reasons I love Both of You is because of how it mirrors Rose’s relationship with them both and directly competes it to Steven. Pearl and Greg were pitted against each other because of their love for Rose and are brought together because of their love for Steven.
I wonder if he also intended for it to foreshadow the fact that Steven would be the one to bring Blue and Yellow back together. Especially since we see Greg and Pearl turned yellow and blue
Last time I was this early, they still made Cookie Cats Edit: I just finished the list and I just lost it when I saw that we both had the same number 1 favorite song This song means so much to me not only because it’s what initially got me hooked on the show, but because it’s message really resonated with me when I first heard it, and I always listen to it whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed or struggling with anxiety. I know Steven Universe has a lot of flaws, but that’s kinda what I admire about it because it’s not perfect just like it’s characters. I think people really hyped this show up during it’s first 3 seasons which is why I think some were kinda disappointed with how it continued. I’m kinda tired of people complaining about the whole Diamonds arc at the end because the real point of that episode was Steven finally accepting himself as his own person. Do you really think they were dumb enough to just immediately forgive a trio of Space Tyrants? Anyways, despite having a lot of flaws, I still think its positives more than outweigh its negatives. Steven Universe is not perfect, but this show means a lot to me, and is still one of my all time favorites❤️
True. The arc is focused on Steven accepting that he isn't Rose, and he is his own person. And besides, most of the show's problems is solved by connecting with the enemy, and if they're willing to change, help them become better.
There is actually a wings of Fire MAP(Multi Animator Project) with the song, the animation is alright but the palette and the lighting is good, the song is good as usual and the premise is good, context makes it even better, I recommend it, I cannot post a link on I Pad though, I’ll post it later.
‘Change,’ definitely deserved to be longer. Some of Zachs greatest voice work and singing, the background instrumental is beautiful. So was the animation
For me (for personal reasons), Love Like You is my favorite. I love the simple tune and the gentle lyrics. From learning to not only love others, but yourself. To me, a person who had always struggled with self confidence and trying to be the kind of person others expect, it's nice to have a song like this
I think you might be letting your dislike of the Diamonds cloud your judgement, because What’s the Use In Feeling (Blue) is amazing and B-Tier at the absolute minimum.
this this this. i have a sickness that is called i know this character is horrible but ooo big woman awoo and yellow diamond is the cause of that disease, and the song is really good
I thought I was the only one who sometimes put on “Here comes a Thought” when I get anxiety that feels nice that it’s not just me. There’s just something so calming about the music and I love how the lyrics don’t just tell us it’s going to be okay but also HOW to tell ourselves it’s going to be okay.
When you're like: *WHY IS THIS THE SONG FOR ENDING/FINALE/CLIFFHANGER?!* "Being Human": *Literally refrencing that Steven moved on and is now trying to discover his life as a normal human because his gem life is comeplete he already saved the galaxy and universe and now he is just looking for a purpose for his human half and trying to figure out his life*
The thing is, I always envisioned Love Like You as being sung by Pearl, to Steven. She sings about learning how to love, as she’d already gone through the stages and been rejected by Rose- this could serve as a reason for why she still needs to learn how love really works, since she is also bitter and jealous when hearing about Rose’s relationships and connections with others, and secrets that aren’t exclusive to just the two of them. She also mentions the person she’s singing to wondering when she’d come back- And I immediately thought about the episode when Pearl first ‘poofed’. She took a while to come back, and Steven waited by her gem worriedly the whole time. It might be that I’m making something out of nothing, but this is how I always thought of this song. Pearl singing to and about Steven as she learns to love him, not just as a part of Rose, but as his own individual person.
A few notes, 1) FINALLY SOMEONE WHO REALISES HOW GOOD “CHANGE” IS ITS SO GOOD 2) “here comes a thought” is the only good thing that came from season 4 3) “What’s the use of feeling blue” is so good to me, I loved it
Fun fact: they ended up redoing the storyboarding on It’s Over Isn’t It, because Pearl’s actress just went *so* hard on it so they had to give Pearl more dramatic facial expressions

I always thought that
I thought it was Rose to Steven, from beyond the grave. “I could even learn how to love like you,” sounds like Rose comparing herself to Steven. I could see why it could be her singing to Greg, though.

I honestly liked how Rose Quarts went from "mother figure and freedom fighter" to "irresponsible and morally questionable young adult" throughout the course of the series
well...her character development was basically shown backwards, so what do we want
Yeah we were shown her at her best and ended at her worst
I kinda find it sad. We learned that she was both good and bad ( which is a creative move because you don't often see this in movies where the protagonist's parents are always god-like good ), but after the movie it felt like they only wanted to show her bad side, so they could give a series a big scapegoat. But no, why make White, a gem Nazi, the bad guy and leave Rose as a morally gray person when you can do this? I'm curious about what happened in reality, without the "she was so good" or "she was so bad" sunglasses on my eyes.

Also here’s some clarification for “True Kinda Love”: I don’t really think it fits in either but I believe it doesn’t fit at all because I think it’s supposed to resemble how when you face the truth, then you can start to love yourself again. *SPOILER ALERT*
Since Spinel wanted to put blame on others to justify her actions, she wasn’t facing the truth that what she was doing was wrong and she needed to live herself again (we can tell she didn’t love herself because when Spinel was starting to cool down in her last fight with Steven she cried about how she was worthless). Garnet already loves herself so she is most likely singing this to teach Spinel about that love.
I think true kind of love is also kind of referencing The End of Evangellion where its the soft almost up beat song over the end of the fucking world, but the theme of Komm Susser Todd and True Kinda Love are extremely different

she saw it coming with her future vision and tried to help...
True Kinda Love should've been way higher.
For me she's my favorite character because she's the most well written she has goals, flaws the whole shabang.but she is still a shitty person(but then again most characters are in this show)
SAME
You beautifully put into words how her development is actually shown backwards!

On the less toxic side of the fandom I made many friends and got me and others through some tough stuff. Thank you Steven Universe. You will be missed.
I STILL WANNA KNOW WHAT WAS IN THE BOX THOUGH
My thoughts precisely
Change your mind was good, it had an excellent climax and I really come to understand White diamond as a character, I also love the symbolism and parallels that were set between her and Pink diamond , they both have to be set to a unbelievable high standard partly because of an image they themselves set to the other gems and their pedestal was broken both metaphorically (rose monuments and reds being destroyed and on ruins while the truth about her was revealed she was a diamond all along and White being proven to have been won’t and the pedestal she was standing in was literally destroyed by Steven while she made her realize how wrong she was about everything)
I thought the ending was way too rushed; they needed more time or at least another 15 minutes

Totally agree. She's still super flawed, but if you look at everything chronologically, she's definitely less bad of a character than people think, although she's definitely done some unforgivable stuff
Also, Rose hated herself so much there’s no point in hating her too.
Yeah
she, some would say, is a really bad person - - but that's the point of her character.
In NWOFA, we see that she tried to remain distanced to Pearl (which doesn’t work)
Even though she was Rose Quartz, Pink Diamond’s guilt never left her until the very end.

Edit:
I just finished the list and I just lost it when I saw that we both had the same number 1 favorite song
This song means so much to me not only because it’s what initially got me hooked on the show, but because it’s message really resonated with me when I first heard it, and I always listen to it whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed or struggling with anxiety.
God damn
Too soon...

Me: man, I absolutely love Being Human, I hope it's on a high tier-
Schaff: yeah this is low C-tier

‘Change,’ definitely deserved to be longer. Some of Zachs greatest voice work and singing, the background instrumental is beautiful. So was the animation
I’ve never felt more insulted than seeing ‘what can I do for you’ ranked in D tier
sameee, but i also agree that the background noise is way to loud and drowns out the vocals. Still a great song tho
*I could not agree more that ‘Stronger than you’ and ‘Here comes a thought’ are top 2.* They are truly BREATHTAKING
Estelle is a queen
knew it was top 2 from the start. only hard part is which is which. I switch them around in my head every nowadays.
Shit literally cured my depression
Me: cool, a Steven Universe video!
Schaffrilla: casually considers some of my favourite songs C-tier.
Thank you. The Diamonds suck but What's the Use in Feeling Blue is the best characterization for Yellow Diamond throughout the series.
this this this. i have a sickness that is called i know this character is horrible but ooo big woman awoo and yellow diamond is the cause of that disease, and the song is really good
I think you have no clue what an opinion is.
@@deadaccount8054 I think you have no clue of what a lighthearted joking comment is

Same!
The slander against "being human" is criminal
No, Its just a Opinion

How is a subjective opinion wrong
Common its not that good, at least to me, I dont think it did justice when songs like "isn't it over" and "here comes a thought" exist
When you're like:
*WHY IS THIS THE SONG FOR ENDING/FINALE/CLIFFHANGER?!*
"Being Human":
*Literally refrencing that Steven moved on and is now trying to discover his life as a normal human because his gem life is comeplete he already saved the galaxy and universe and now he is just looking for a purpose for his human half and trying to figure out his life*
Yeah, that's in the title, but otherwise it's just lame elevator music that doesn't stand up to the ending songs we've had before.
Change is literally just the embodiment of “why do I hear boss music”
So is Other Friends
@@runningoncylinders3829Other Friends is more like a boss introduction song, while Change is like the final boss battle song
Look I get the hatred of rose but “What Can I Do” is a straight up banger and deserved at least C tier. Also “Isn’t it Over” should be 3
Finale ~ "How does this boy hit those high notes?"
Me: Because Zach Callison is a Musical King! 👑🙌
I AGREE SO MUCH WITH "here comes a thought" PLACEMENT ITS AMAZING
The juxtaposition between your hatred of the F to C tier songs to the rest was really weird because your Phineas and Ferb ranking was way more chill.
Stronger than you: * exists *
Undertale: *I'LL STEAL IT! NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW*
I wish I knew the reference
@raffle baffle I remember it now, thank you good fellow

Don't quote me on this but I think Rebecca Sugar said in an interview that it was meant to be sung from almost any of the characters' POV
My perception was always Rose to Greg, but it could be sung by everyone.
OOOH I LOVE IT
A few notes, 1) FINALLY SOMEONE WHO REALISES HOW GOOD “CHANGE” IS ITS SO GOOD 2) “here comes a thought” is the only good thing that came from season 4 3) “What’s the use of feeling blue” is so good to me, I loved it
