One more cool thing to note: in Brawl, when you first get to Taboo, he instantly kills every fighter. However, one last fighter gets back up to save the others: Kirby, Sakurai's first character. When you get back to him, he begins to attack again, but your party is saved by Sonic, a character from Sakurai's childhood, who many see as having fallen from grace due to poor management of the franchise. This could represent Akurai ready to give up and hand the reigns over, but then seeing what can happen if people who don't care about the game are in charge, and carrying on.
This needs more likes because this should have been included. You're right, Kirby leads the charge of bringing the characters back to life, just like how Sakurai might think back on how Kirby started it all and he just can't give up now. Now I wonder if the other characters, the other three who made it: Luigi, Ness, and Dedede have any special meaning to him.
That's a great point. King Dedede, another of Sakurai's characters who's often misunderstood, is the one that ends up helping Kirby, as well as Ness and Luigi, in the first place. We can probably stretch that Luigi being revived is Sakurai's nod to him being an underdog but I don't know the symbolism of Ness, if there is any. Dedede being the one who saves everyone while being misunderstood as a villain is a common staple of his appearances in games so I like to think that's part of the symbolism as well.

These parallels with Sakurai are quite interesting. I've felt sorry for him when first reading those interviews, I do think its time we let someone else take over the franchise, but as he said, at the same time he cant imagine anyone else doing it. So perhaps leave Sakurai as an adviser? It's like a parent watching their child grow up and move out of the house, they are no longer in control, but they can still advise their child, and offer help when in need. I imagine it's a similar type of stress. Great video MatPat.

I was at first pretty upset to see this Game Theory being made after having already seen your fantastic video of the topic, though I respect you offering your thoughts here and not even firing back about MatPat covering the same theory. In truth, it is just a theory, and as such, no two people covering the same theoretical topic will come to the exact same conclusion...making it valuable to have input from multiple sources. Though I still think your video totally deserved a shout-out here, if only to give viewers access to another angle on the theory. :P
You guys, MatPat didn't steal from him. They just did videos on their interpretations on what is going on in Smash. Several months ago, MatPat shared a link to Gnoggin's autism theory on the Game Theory facebook, I believe he called it excellent or something.
The comparisons between Master Hand, Crazy Hand, and the others with Sakurai were brilliant, as soon as you stated his possible inclusion I knew this was going good. When developing these games Sakurai even endures physical trauma in his hands, confirmed when interviewed about Smash 4 and Brawl, and these can be symbolic as the characters constantly beat these hands into a pulp, it shows that these games are physically hurting his creative tools. Awesome job MatPat
I agree, I thought that the comparisons actually pieced everything together about Sakurai and the games he created. We may get tired of doing the things we love and create, but we can't let others change what we've started. Our dreams will become nightmares if can't make them ours.
Shit, for me that's like, the best theory ever, I mean, I dream of becoming a novel writter, I have so much in my head that I want to share with the world, hoping people will like it, but I never though about what I would do if I ended up like that, I mean trapped in a series that I should already have ended, wanting to do more, but risking the quality of my previous creations to work on something new, that is just... sad, beyond whatever I can imagine about this work... This scenario applies to a lot of businessmen who don't have 100% rights over their creations. You either become a slave of your own creation or you leave...and allow someone else to take it from you.
That is the sad truth behind many careers involving artistic pursuits, tv shows, movies, games, books, ect... unless the creator has the ability to personally fund it all themselves, they become shackled to those who can fund and broadcast/release the material, and in many cases lose the very rights to their own creation or risk having it taken from them and given to someone who will do what said sponsors want. The Megaman X series is a good example, or Konami and Kojima. Or the years it took Disney to get back the rights to Oswald. Companies sometimes refuse to let go of a property and lose sight of the beauty and sanctity that the creation itself, and those who made it, truly hold, instead milking it of every last penny until it is a withered husk and discarding the remnants. Sakurai has given us all such a huge part of our lives and so many amazing games and memories, in many ways it brings a tear to one's eyes to think of the inner turmoil that it inflicts upon him, or on anyone in a position of creativity like that.
I hope that never happens to TH-cam. I want to believe that no matter how commercialised it gets, it will never reach the point where the power is taken away from the creator...
+tymki Funny you say that, because the current owner of TH-cam (Google) is not its original creator. Originally, TH-cam was created and owned by two Paypal employees. A year after it's creation, however, Google bought it. That being said, I don't think Google will be suffering any corporate strong-arming. They fund TH-cam themselves, of course, so they do as they please with it.
Arf, really hope that he didn't struggle hard on this one. The poor guy deserves a break, he struggled hard to add in characters like Ridley and Simon, not to mention every other character on a game like the nintendo switch, and many just take it for granted.
That's probably a symbol of us fans asking for more, his hopes are dying, and we trying to save everything is trying to save Sakurai and his current state.
Good episode and ended on a good note, but damn, disappointed you missed out on an opportunity to mention Master Core's "Final attack", where it lets out several Tabuu waves and, if you survive the onslaught, commits suicide. If that's not symbolism that supports the theory, then I don't know what is. :P
Let's also not forget that Sakurai LEFT after the original Smash Bros. was created and was asked to return to make Melee AFTER it has already been announced.
oki den I kind of agree with you, but at the same time I kind of don't. I can certainly see the franchise ending someday, but I don't believe that Smash 4 would be a good game to end on. In a few different ways, Smash 4 can be looked at as the weakest in the series since the first game, The utter lack of a story mode being a huge contributor to this. While I can certainly see the end of Smash some day, this game would be an incredibly weak ending, like, instead of going out with a bang it just sort of poofs out of existence.
JaMaAuWright I completely agree with you, but Sakurai is already bearing medical issues, and I feel any other directors will just ruin the game or make it too fan-oriented if anything. Plus, I can tell Sakurai wouldn't want it to continue past this.

Can we just appreciate how impressive it is that the 8 bit Mario Amiibo looks almost exactly like the 3D model of 8 bit Mario in the Game Theory opening? The weird thing is that the opening is older than the Amiibo.

The fact that this adds up to the "World of Light" trailer is mind blowing! It makes so much sense! Those beams of light that kill all of the characters is Sakurai wanting to finally end it by killing off everyone from the very beginning. I mean, in the Nintendo direct, he even says, "Will I ever get a break?" But at the same time, we all know he loves what he created because Kirby survives in the trailer. Kirby symbolizes Sakurai's true adoration towards his creation. If you watch the trailer carefully, it's easy to tell that this adventure mode is gonna be a big one. It's gonna take quite some time to complete, but that is message in itself. Sakurai is saying, "I truly love this franchise, but just let me take a break this time around." That's why Kirby survives! It's not because Kirby's warp star saved him... Okay, maybe that could be it... But Kirby survives because that's Sakurai's way of showing his inner feelings towards the games and the characters. Part of him wants to destroy what he created, to end it all, that's shown by the strange being in the trailer. The other part of him wants to save the characters, to keep it alive, that's shown by Kirby being the sole survivor. The same thing happened in brawl, only difference was that it was King DeDeDe who was the accidental hero of the story, if it wasn't for that badge Kirby swallowed, the smash franchise would've ended there. But remember, Sakurai created the Kirby franchise, which also means he created King DeDeDe as well. Making that connection shows that Sakurai let his creations save the entire smash universe in brawl, and the same thing will happen in Smash Ultimate. But hey, that's just a theory. A SMASH THEORY. I don't know if it's just me, But am I the only one that thinks that "Galeem" Represents the Rebirth of the Smash Bros. Series? I mean, It's a Giant Light Thing, It KILLS All of the Characters using LIGHT, And Kirby has to REVIVE Them or Bring them BACK! I think that's what's going on here...

I do believe, in all honesty, smash ultimate is the last game in the franchise, I don't think there's any other way to top this one.

The Game Theorists I have a theory to add onto yours. If you do not attack the Master Core at the final end when he's just the ball in the middle of the stage in 30-45 seconds, he actually rises up and attacks you with waves like Tabuu did; it's an instant kill if it hits you. If you manage to live past it, it then self-destructs and you win if you are still alive. Maybe... 1. It's Sakurai completely enraged how the fans keep asking for more after all the stuff he's given us and how he is wanting to be done, so he rises up for one last bang. OR 2. It's Sakurai slowly conforming to what society (Tabuu) wants, so he "pleads" with the gamer to finish it off and never let the childish dreams die before he is forced into conforming to society (attacking like Tabuu).
Ya, that's a good point. Id like to add, notice that the first fight in brawl is mario vs Kirby, his two companies that he works with most. His didn't want this, but now he had to choose. I work on characters and do 3-D modeling, and everything that I create is a painstaking process that takes months. The characters are mine and I don't want that to change, but sometimes you have to choose what to focus on. It's not a stretch to think of that in this instance.
Frankly I'm fine with this installment of Smash bros being the last one. What else is there to put in other than small details? Everything in the game is worthy of admiration. I think that from now on, Smash bros should be a service that upgrades infinitely. Like an MMO. Where all you could add is characters, stages and one or another balance patch. That man Sakurai deserves a long ass vacation. I always admired how much content were in their games. I'm 100 hours in Kid Icarus Uprising and I just finished the first challenge panel. That man and his team gave us more than our money's worth in an era where we're being scammed with full priced games with hidden DLC and microtransactions. I don't understand how people prefer those games. As for Sakurai, a big bro hug. That man, does not only deserve money, but our warmest and honest gratitude.
Revvy Look at minecraft. It's the same way, which works incredibly well. No sequels, no microtransactions, Just buy the game once and you have infinitely updating content. I think that's what he's trying to get at. maybe MMOs were a bad example
Alex Piklor Yeah, but minecraft's an indie game, and with indie companies there's often a more clear target in sight instead of dozens if not hundreds of people adding their input. In the end the goal of big companies is to make money quickly, Nintendo will see what similar games are doing, notice how successful that is right now for those kinds of games and go down that path. this is all tribulation, of course.

@@derekmartin5340 There are several problems with Waluigi that literally prevents him from being any revelevant for Nintendo themselves (and by extension, Sakurai), due to the fact Waluigi was intended as a filler for Wario's partner in Mario Tennis. Even thinking into a full moveset for him is hard. Wario, on the other hand, has his own series.

Wait wait... Sakurai is too awesome to age, right? So Sakurai is Ash Ketchum, right? Well, Ash is still 10, so logically, Sakurai is still 10.... if Sakurai is 10, he's still a child, so he's still Master Hand without the society interrupting... and if pizza = 2, and the sun only can eat 7 breads, then water shouldn't be created yet. So if it really is true that a house can spit fire, that can only mean ONE thing: Marth confirmed for Super Zelda Galaxy 5. But seriously, MIND=BLOWN. This theory is really well done and thought through. In fact, ever since ultimate was announced, me and my brother came with our own theory about the game. We still believe this is still the story of Masahiro Sakurai, but we made this a lot darker and sadder. I’ll start with melee, the sequel of Smash 64. This introduces crazy hand, the crazy master hand. His trophy says that he was the hallow feeling of destroying one’s own creation. This was Sakurai’s first point of what he was getting into, he wanted to end the series at melee, but the fans wanted him back, pulling him from the darkness to keep making their games, crazy hand is the embodiment of that. Brawl is next, and Subspace Emissary was AWSOME, but the story still continues. (Spoiler alert for those who haven’t played brawl’s Subspace.) At the near end of the game you meet Tabuu, a force controlling master hand like a puppet, tricking Ganondorf to do the wrong order. Ganondorf attacks, but is easily defeated, Master hand try’s to fight as well, but also beats him easily. While Game Theory’s point of Tabuu does make sense, I think it represents us, the players. The ones who keep Sakurai to keep adding what they want. We are controlling the creator like a puppet to keep adding more things for them, to make it more competitive. Sakurai made this game for fun, but all games have a competitive side to them, melee was a super competitive game, but still could be played be new players. Anyway back to Subspace, after beating the Great Maze, Tabuu tries to end all the characters again, but this time, forever. But at the last moment, Sonic swoops in and saves them all. Sonic represents those who support Sakurai, those helping him to keep going and make games. Then you defeat Tabuu, which is insanely hard to do sometimes, but after defeating him, or in this case, the players who keep asking for more, this is the players realizing (kinda) that they can’t ask for too much from Sakurai, and they will mostly respect what he does now. Smash 4 unfortunately does not have a story mode, but does introduce Master Core. Master Core, like Game Theory said, breaks out of Master Hand, this is Master hand losing his mind, and now can’t take anymore. While Crazy Hand escapes, Master Core, or the feelings of Sakurai, break out. Master Cores first mode is a giant person, and yes, each mode represents something. Mode one has a lot of moves that push the player away, this is Sakurai telling the player to go away, to leave him alone. Mode two is a scorpion, this mode is super offensive and likes to attack a lot. This is Sakurai now fighting the player to leave him be and stop bringing him back. Mode three is Sword mode, which has a lot of multi hit attacks one big swing move, and a five hit move. This one is Sakurai saying all the things he has done (multi hit moves) the main point of the game (The big swing) and the things he gets in return (The five hit move). Mode 4 is a copy mode, this is still Master Hands creativity still in Master Core. This is Sakurai saying that these are the characters he has created and that the sequals, which are meant to be better the the previous installments, are his hope that people will get off he’s back for making more Smash. Mode 5 (If your difficulty is high enough) is Master Fortress, a last line of defense to defend the ball. This is you getting into Sakurai’s head, this is his last line of defense against you, and each time you hit the Ball, your hitting points in his head, your saying, “I want this, I want this, I want this.” If you somehow manage to beat Master Fortress, you now hit his Core, the core that does nothing unless out don’t beat it in a certain amount of time. The music is dead, the timer has stopped, you can’t hear anything except your character beating the Core. This is Sakurai giving up, telling you that you win in the end, he can’t take it anymore and now he knows that what he wants to create isn’t what the fans want. Ultimate is him giving what the fans want, everyone is back, fan favorites are here, all just for you. He still has the bit of the game he wanted, but this new smash bros his him giving up and handing over what the fans want. This is my theory, and this is how I think Smash’s story goes. So the next time you fight Master hand and Master Core, think about what you’ve done, or not done, to Sakurai. The people that asked for more out of Sakurai, this is what you’ve done to Sakurai, the smash God. But Remember, that’s just a Theory, a Fan Theory. Thanks for reading.
Smash 5 is possibly the last Game Sakurai will ever made... Does that mean smash 6 will be extremely disappointing until like... 2 years after smash 6 they will remake mele and 3 more years will have a brand new revolutionary smash 8 that are the beat game ever with every feature enhanced to the greatest extreme with lore and more other stuff but it's was made by someone else? (yes, this is a reference to what happened to the Kirby series after Sakurai left Hal and they made squeak squad, super star ultra and then return to dreamland)
The ironic thing is that many fans of Super Smash Bros probably have game design aspirations because of Super Smash Bros, which sheds so much light on Nintendo, and by extension, video game history. A "Damn, I want to be a part of that!" kind of feeling. A few may even want to be the one to take Sakurai's place. This video should be required viewing for anyone who does.
If Sakuria does quit he should make it so that after you defeat master hand in his last title he shakes the hand of the new master hand and waves goodbye to the player. Now that would be an amazing ending
It's crazy to me that Sakurai hates the franchise so much and yet still does an incredibly Uh-Mazing job. Imagine what he could do with a project he actually enjoyed. He's one of the most gifted and talented visionaries alive, in my opinion. I hope he is able to find something he enjoys again, he deserves it.
Well he did Kid Icarus: Uprising between Brawl and Smash 4. I guess there's an example of something he WANTED to do. From what I hear it was a good game. It'll be interesting to see what he does next. Though I'm sure it'll be a while because who knows what working on 2 Smash games at the same time could do to a man, especially a man who is so worn out.

Sometimes I giggle at how ridiculous and far fetched some of these get, but I still enjoy them. But this episode is the one that feels the most real: the theory that could actually be what the developer intended for someone to pick up on. Good work, keep it up!
My small related theory is that Taboo is actually the Player, who's using Sakurai as their toys to force him and make more squeals of the game for their own enjoyment. As they don't realize that Sakurai is struggling and is wasting his own health on those games. those fans screaming "MOAR SSB GAEMS" exists- But hey! It's just a theory, a GAME theory! :^)
Than it does not make sense that it's trying to turn the characters back into figurines. It's trying to stop the creation of games, not further it. And there is also nothing taboo about players being assholes.
What a purely innocent and egoistic thought process. Let's break this into points or this will never end: 1. Yeah, there's only one every 4 to 5 years, but making a video game ain't easy, and it's most certainly not quick. It's a mountain of work, mistakes and backtracking, stress... Do you think he got that injury playing tennis or something? 2. Video games aren't human beings nor extremely advanced A.I. dude, they ain't gonna make themselves. I'm not naive enough to think he makes them on his own, but there's no guarantee (for us as much as for him) that Smash will evolve in the way he and we, the players, want if he leaves the Smash devs. And besides, I know a lot more games that fell from grace not long after their original creators let them go. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro... 3. Let's say your a painter. You make this exceptional piece of art that EVERYONE loves. Naturally, they want more. But what would you prefer as an artist: Making 3, 4, 5 or even 6 paintings from scratch, but look like the previous one with some slight modifications? Or would you rather, after a while, make something completely new and different, or at least anything else than that damn painting you've done so many times? 4. Nothing to say about that last thing, though I do think you're exaggerating quite a bit about Nostalgia vs. Game Quality. So yeah, I think the guy who created two critically acclaimed video game franchises is in the good business, so cut him some slack will you?

Y'know, I always wondered if Master Core and the Swarm is the embodiment of Sakurai's physical pain when making these games. While working on Smash 4, Sakurai's calcific tendinitis was acting up really bad and causing him immense pain to hold the controllers and play test things. In which arm? The right. What Hand does the Swarm burst out of? Master Hand, the right hand.
***** So is Master Core guaranteed to break out of one of the hands at higher difficulties? He's always broken out of Crazy Hand for me. Then again, Master Hand was always the first to go down in my playthroughs.

I had a theory a bit back that Master Hand and Crazy Hand were actually Sakurais hands. Ever hear about how Sakurai is going through immense problems in his hand from developing Smash? No surprise Crazy Hand is so erratic and hard to control. And get this - his hand problems started in Melee! But thats just a- *shot*
Here is my theory about Ultimate: MASTERHANDS: the creators of the different toys in the series. GALEEM - main enemy: Something/someone bigger than the creators. DESTROYED MASTERHANDS: symbolizes that the enemy is controlling the creators and the choices that they will make. KILLING EVERYONE: by controlling the creators, it destroys the essence/identity of the characters that they made. CLONE OF MARIO: The enemy tries to make the characters what they want them to be... SPIRIT POSSESSING MARIO TURNING HIM EVIL: ... but by doing so, it made the characters not like what they supposed to be, making them very different and eerie. KIRBY: I think this represents Sakurai, and he must do something to fix the system that the enemy has made, thus, rescuing the other characters and beating the enemy.
Since Kirby was one of Sakurai's first original Nintendo characters, if not the very first, maybe he chose Kirby in order to 'go back to the roots' of the series, and reinstate the original vision for Smash. Very interesting theory!
I understand that it's probably not your cup of tea, but I would love to see you take a dive into the lore of Dark Souls. The series never just straight up tells you anything, and it would be really interesting to see your take on what exactly is happening throughout the two games. It would be very understandable if you didn't though. Exploring the universe would take an enormous amount of time and effort. Not to mention the frustration that naturally comes with playing the games. Still, it never hurts to hope! :D
It would be awesome to see MatPat trying to discover the secrets of Dark Souls I and II, especially knowing how much he loves to make theories about the lore of videogames. Who knows, maybe he would find out something that we still don't know about Lordran or Drangleic.
Here is the lore of Dark Souls: You are Zombie that's sometimes not a zombie. When you wake up shit wants to kill you, when you walk shit wants to kill you, when you run shit wants to kill you, when you die shit still wants to kill you. There is no way to stop this other than killing shit that wants to kill you. If you ring two Big Ass Bells you can teleport around to make running from shit that wants to kill you easier. Also, if you don't praise the sun you aren't doing it right. If you see a player spirit that's not white or gold they probably want to kill you.
You forgot to mention one thing. Smash 4 really wasn't supposed to happen. See, Smash 4 was "confirmed" back at E3 2012 at Nintendo's press conference about the Wii U when Reggie said that there was going to be a Smash Bros on the Wii U. Now, Sakurai hadn't even heard of the project as he felt like Smash didn't need another sequel and he was currently developing Kid Icarus: Uprising. This is where Namco Bandai comes in. Once Sakurai started development on the game he had a deadline to finish the game so it wouldn't be delayed like Brawl was. So he seeked the help of Namco Bandai since they have a history of releasing amazing games in small amounts of time. The reason I bring this up is because it's obvious that Samurai really didn't want to make this game, and it was probably one of the most stressful experiences of his life. Another point you forgot to bring up was that Samurai said at the beginning of 2013 that he didn't want more than 1 third party character in this game because he didn't want the game to lose the focuse of the Nintendo characters. In fact the only reason Snake got in Brawl because the creator of the MGS franchise practically begged Samurai to put Snake in Brawl. Now I think that the one third party character Sakurai was talking about was Sonic since he was in Brawl and he's the character that makes the most sense. But as we all know, Pac Man and Mega man got in this game and there were more third party characters than there were in Brawl. To me, the characters that represent these two instances are Tabuu and Master Core. Tabuu is Nintendo and the fans, because Nintendo pretty much forced Sakurai to make this game because they knew that it would save the Wii U (and it did). The reason Tabuu represents the fans is because they were pretty much harassing Sakurai to put in Mega Man and Pac Man. Master Core represents Sakurai because he said no in both cases, and while he didn't fight in the second case, he still said no and he planned to stand by it. Master Core strongly represents Sakurai in the first case because he refused to make Smash 4 until Kid Icuras: Uprising was finished. And just like Master Core, Sakurai gave in. He gave in to Nintendo and the pressure that was being put on him by the fans.He made the Smash 4 and he put Mega Man and Pac Man into it. Now I'm not saying I don't want another Smash Bros. game, I'm just saying Nintendo shouldn't have forced Sakurai to develop Smash Bros like they did. Now, I'm pretty sure that Sakurai was under a contract or something but if he didn't want to sign it then he didn't have to. But the thing about the third party characters is right. Stop requesting every single character from any media. You're just putting more pressure on Sakurai to do so. If he doesn't want to put Goku or Trevor Phillips in Smash Bros then he doesn't have to. (Though I will admit I would pay to see Trevor fight Ganondworf.) And he doesn't have to make another Smash Bros if he doesn't want to. I would rather not have another Smash Bros game than forcing someone to do something they don't want to do. And to 90% of the Smash Bros fan base: GOKU WILL NEVER BE IN SMASH BROS!!! DEAL WITH IT!!!!
Given what Sakurai has said on famitsu regarding the 3ds and some of the fan backlash over clone characters, I don't think this theory is that far off. I'm kinda suprised this vid didn't include material from the 3ds release and some of the quotes over fan concerns between that release and the wii-u one.
Nintendo is publically traded so if this is true. He is contracted not to say anything to belittle the company while he wants his job. After all if he gives it away that he is sick of making the game, less people will buy it. So in no way would we ever get the truth till he leaves his job.
Javier Flores it could go. 1. Be him looking back at things and see whether the choices he made was right. We all have those moments where we choose to do things and accept things, but we don’t just move on we ponder those thoughts and see whether the choice we made was right. Naturally it can’t be right all the time and sometimes we know this, but that doesn’t stop the thought of us regretting our choices. 2. Him finally getting to move on. While it may be unlikely since it feels like it should happen later in the series it makes sense that after 5 games that should have been 2 or 4 you want to let go. He stayed because he still wants hold of his project, but should he be ready to let go he can move on. 3. People reaching out to him. While it’s stress on one person sometimes you forget the people that are willing to aid you and respect your actions. Because sometimes the whole of society can blind you of the little things that are in your life.
Personally, I think (taking into consideration, the main selling point for this next game is it's a reunion of past smash characters), It'll probably be the metaphorical "beach episode" of the series
Smash Ultimate is the"Ultimate Smash" and it's what the fans wanted. And with it, he will probably give it to us and just show us at he have lost the fight. He did lost it in Smash 4 and wants just to move on, but can't because of the fans. That's why he will end it all with what the fans wants and probably doing some kind of "suicide" to the series. With Smash 6 being a reboot.
Holy shit...this might be one of the best theories you've made. I'm a stickler for symbolism and I've always wondered what is the underlying message with Master Hand (especially in SSBB) so I can totally see where this is coming from. I feel sad for Sakurai, yes, but at the same time I would be very happy to know that he put so much of his personal feeling into this franchise; to know that in a way he is trying to convey his deeper feelings through what appears to be a crossover family brawl game. Glad to know that I'm not the only one who thought of this. That and the Battlefield in Melee, where the core representing the battlefield that he's fighting on on the reflected side (Upside down) where it shows Sakurai's state of mind. In 64, it was a Maze structure, representing brains, the thought. Melee has the Core in rib structures (Heart is trapped within the franchise). Brawl has Mountains within the view of the Roman coliseum (Fighting to be free) Smash 4 3DS has Destruction with Clouds in the sky, probably representing heaven Lastly there's Wii U which shows Re-Birth of old structures (like classicism) Especially with the Mountain and what I believe could be the coliseum in the shadows on the left when flipped. 2 More things before I stop talking In Smash 4 U There are 5 Bosses after you kill Sakurai's Childhood 1. The Denial of loss, and Isolation. The Slashing of Arms to knock you away, the banging of his head on the floor to both confusion of what else to create in the series giving Brain Farts (Bursts) and forgiveness for the lack of a story mode (lol jk) The Screaming to make everyone go away, raising the whole final destination to the sky to die away. 2. That dang dog alligator. Dog in the society to follow what we want and make more. Aligator, (Sounds like Arigatou). The Rage that gives off Anger, that makes him want to Bite you, jump on you, screaming howls to scare you off with jolts. 3. The Knifes of Seppuku, Tries to cut your life down in replace of not making another game. Throwing blades, cutting you down. What else to say? 4. Being Depressed, he tries to make his problem look at himself (or herself) to see how it feels to strike at yourself. Lets not mention that it's a bigger version of you, with a stronger attack power. Sakurai wants us to feel his pain. 5. Master Fortress, Akurai's body accepts you. "My body is ready." Endorsed with Acidic Redbull (stomach acid) with a red Firey Curry filled body, Sakurai Welcomes you to go in there and Kill him to get it over with. Some of his creations still wants you out of him, to keep him alive, to work on other games. He'd rather be dead than to keep working on this. Once you cut the heart of of him, you know he's going to still want to fight back, so he makes you beat the living life out of what is left, to fly out of this game once and for all. Last thing I want to say. He should make one more game called Smash Bros Forever. Where all of the games are combined to represent his last memory before his final breath in the game franchise. All right. I'm done blabbering. Go on with your day now ^_^
That was incredibly depressing. Not what I expected, but great video nonetheless.I am absolutely awful at smash bros, i just watch my friends play it and then wipe the floor with them in Mario Kart. I didn't know anything about the producer or his supposed ongoing trauma. If it's as you say it is then that's sad. But part of growing up is learning how to let things go. I mean it's not easy, but it's part of life. If Smash Bros is such a trial on him, he really should jut...you know...move on from it. It is interesting how complex Sakurai is, I knew most of the interviews and quotes before the video. The interviews where he talks about not making Smash 4 competitive intentionally are interesting. His disdain for sequels is very refreshing since it is what a lot of people see, but at the same time everyone wants Air Ride 2, Pokemon Snap 2, and Smash 5, but not another effortlessly thrown together Mario or LoZ
Yeah, I had never heard those interviews. This was a really interesting episode, and I agree that his disdain for sequels is refreshing. I think part of it stems from the nature of sequels being repetitive, a lot of modern games (especially new FPS titles) feel like they just changed the background and setting and threw the game out. It's a hard balance between giving fans new content but making it different enough to make it worth re-releasing. I think that's why he's so stressed, in my mind Smash has peaked. I can't really think of anything that would really change the game. He wants to create more content but can't think of anything to improve on. Side note, your videos are cool :3

The way for sakurai to make MILLIONS is by porting melee to the next console cus heaven knows people will be lining up for miles to get a new version of the game cus it has mewtwo, ice climbers, that one item from goldeneye that cant be put into the new games, etc. LITERALLY A GOLD MINE WAITING FOR NINTENDO!

Andrew Wang I don't think he wants us to stop playing Smash or Kirby. Perhaps more that we should enjoy what we have. He believes that a game should be a complete experience, so much that it shouldn't need a sequel or trilogy to feel complete. That's why he's already said he has no intentions of a Kid Icarus Uprising sequel because he doesn't think it needs a sequel.
Andrew Wang I think he meant that he wants us to enjoy the current games more (and to feel the complete experience, but that latter one goes against the fact they made DLC for the fourth game, meaning that he either retracted that latter statement, or that both versions of Smash 4 are pitiful excuses for a Smash game). Either that, or he wants us to stop reclaiming sequels for Kirby and Smash games (technically, "Epic Yarn" and "Return to Dreamland" were supposed to be the last Kirby games, if we go by that logic. Same for Brawl, only for the Smash series).

You won't even want to KNOW How Dark my (For Lack of a Better Term) Made up Story is for this Mode. In Centers around a Pichu named Speedster who Died before the Events of this Mode and is now a Soul. Though he's going to Help Kirby instead of Kill him like all the others do. It's probably going to be the most Tragic thing I'll ever Make by FAR!
One more cool thing to note: in Brawl, when you first get to Taboo, he instantly kills every fighter. However, one last fighter gets back up to save the others: Kirby, Sakurai's first character. When you get back to him, he begins to attack again, but your party is saved by Sonic, a character from Sakurai's childhood, who many see as having fallen from grace due to poor management of the franchise. This could represent Akurai ready to give up and hand the reigns over, but then seeing what can happen if people who don't care about the game are in charge, and carrying on.

This needs more likes because this should have been included. You're right, Kirby leads the charge of bringing the characters back to life, just like how Sakurai might think back on how Kirby started it all and he just can't give up now. Now I wonder if the other characters, the other three who made it: Luigi, Ness, and Dedede have any special meaning to him.

That's a great point. King Dedede, another of Sakurai's characters who's often misunderstood, is the one that ends up helping Kirby, as well as Ness and Luigi, in the first place. We can probably stretch that Luigi being revived is Sakurai's nod to him being an underdog but I don't know the symbolism of Ness, if there is any. Dedede being the one who saves everyone while being misunderstood as a villain is a common staple of his appearances in games so I like to think that's part of the symbolism as well.
Also, when they all die other two (Luigi and ness) revive but is because of yet another of Sakurai's character, King DDD

These parallels with Sakurai are quite interesting. I've felt sorry for him when first reading those interviews, I do think its time we let someone else take over the franchise, but as he said, at the same time he cant imagine anyone else doing it. So perhaps leave Sakurai as an adviser? It's like a parent watching their child grow up and move out of the house, they are no longer in control, but they can still advise their child, and offer help when in need. I imagine it's a similar type of stress. Great video MatPat.

I have to say, as heartfelt as this video is, it's not as well done or consistent as yours. You were able to glean more evidence and make more connections.
I was at first pretty upset to see this Game Theory being made after having already seen your fantastic video of the topic, though I respect you offering your thoughts here and not even firing back about MatPat covering the same theory. In truth, it is just a theory, and as such, no two people covering the same theoretical topic will come to the exact same conclusion...making it valuable to have input from multiple sources.
Though I still think your video totally deserved a shout-out here, if only to give viewers access to another angle on the theory. :P
You guys, MatPat didn't steal from him. They just did videos on their interpretations on what is going on in Smash. Several months ago, MatPat shared a link to Gnoggin's autism theory on the Game Theory facebook, I believe he called it excellent or something.
The comparisons between Master Hand, Crazy Hand, and the others with Sakurai were brilliant, as soon as you stated his possible inclusion I knew this was going good. When developing these games Sakurai even endures physical trauma in his hands, confirmed when interviewed about Smash 4 and Brawl, and these can be symbolic as the characters constantly beat these hands into a pulp, it shows that these games are physically hurting his creative tools. Awesome job MatPat
I agree, I thought that the comparisons actually pieced everything together about Sakurai and the games he created. We may get tired of doing the things we love and create, but we can't let others change what we've started. Our dreams will become nightmares if can't make them ours.

This scenario applies to a lot of businessmen who don't have 100% rights over their creations. You either become a slave of your own creation or you leave...and allow someone else to take it from you.
That is the sad truth behind many careers involving artistic pursuits, tv shows, movies, games, books, ect... unless the creator has the ability to personally fund it all themselves, they become shackled to those who can fund and broadcast/release the material, and in many cases lose the very rights to their own creation or risk having it taken from them and given to someone who will do what said sponsors want.
The Megaman X series is a good example, or Konami and Kojima. Or the years it took Disney to get back the rights to Oswald.
Companies sometimes refuse to let go of a property and lose sight of the beauty and sanctity that the creation itself, and those who made it, truly hold, instead milking it of every last penny until it is a withered husk and discarding the remnants.
Sakurai has given us all such a huge part of our lives and so many amazing games and memories, in many ways it brings a tear to one's eyes to think of the inner turmoil that it inflicts upon him, or on anyone in a position of creativity like that.
I hope that never happens to TH-cam. I want to believe that no matter how commercialised it gets, it will never reach the point where the power is taken away from the creator...

Funny you say that, because the current owner of TH-cam (Google) is not its original creator. Originally, TH-cam was created and owned by two Paypal employees. A year after it's creation, however, Google bought it.
That being said, I don't think Google will be suffering any corporate strong-arming. They fund TH-cam themselves, of course, so they do as they please with it.

I can certainly see the franchise ending someday, but I don't believe that Smash 4 would be a good game to end on. In a few different ways, Smash 4 can be looked at as the weakest in the series since the first game, The utter lack of a story mode being a huge contributor to this. While I can certainly see the end of Smash some day, this game would be an incredibly weak ending, like, instead of going out with a bang it just sort of poofs out of existence.

The fact that this adds up to the "World of Light" trailer is mind blowing! It makes so much sense! Those beams of light that kill all of the characters is Sakurai wanting to finally end it by killing off everyone from the very beginning. I mean, in the Nintendo direct, he even says, "Will I ever get a break?" But at the same time, we all know he loves what he created because Kirby survives in the trailer. Kirby symbolizes Sakurai's true adoration towards his creation. If you watch the trailer carefully, it's easy to tell that this adventure mode is gonna be a big one. It's gonna take quite some time to complete, but that is message in itself. Sakurai is saying, "I truly love this franchise, but just let me take a break this time around." That's why Kirby survives! It's not because Kirby's warp star saved him... Okay, maybe that could be it... But Kirby survives because that's Sakurai's way of showing his inner feelings towards the games and the characters. Part of him wants to destroy what he created, to end it all, that's shown by the strange being in the trailer. The other part of him wants to save the characters, to keep it alive, that's shown by Kirby being the sole survivor. The same thing happened in brawl, only difference was that it was King DeDeDe who was the accidental hero of the story, if it wasn't for that badge Kirby swallowed, the smash franchise would've ended there. But remember, Sakurai created the Kirby franchise, which also means he created King DeDeDe as well. Making that connection shows that Sakurai let his creations save the entire smash universe in brawl, and the same thing will happen in Smash Ultimate. But hey, that's just a theory. A SMASH THEORY. A similar situation happened in brawl though, and brawl was supposed to be the last game in the franchise. We only got a 4th game due to popular demand. I do believe, in all honesty, smash ultimate is the last game in the franchise, I don't think there's any other way to top this one.

The Game Theorists I have a theory to add onto yours. If you do not attack the Master Core at the final end when he's just the ball in the middle of the stage in 30-45 seconds, he actually rises up and attacks you with waves like Tabuu did; it's an instant kill if it hits you. If you manage to live past it, it then self-destructs and you win if you are still alive. Maybe...
1. It's Sakurai completely enraged how the fans keep asking for more after all the stuff he's given us and how he is wanting to be done, so he rises up for one last bang.
OR
2. It's Sakurai slowly conforming to what society (Tabuu) wants, so he "pleads" with the gamer to finish it off and never let the childish dreams die before he is forced into conforming to society (attacking like Tabuu).

Ya, that's a good point. Id like to add, notice that the first fight in brawl is mario vs Kirby, his two companies that he works with most. His didn't want this, but now he had to choose. I work on characters and do 3-D modeling, and everything that I create is a painstaking process that takes months. The characters are mine and I don't want that to change, but sometimes you have to choose what to focus on. It's not a stretch to think of that in this instance.

Frankly I'm fine with this installment of Smash bros being the last one. What else is there to put in other than small details? Everything in the game is worthy of admiration. I think that from now on, Smash bros should be a service that upgrades infinitely. Like an MMO. Where all you could add is characters, stages and one or another balance patch. That man Sakurai deserves a long ass vacation. I always admired how much content were in their games. I'm 100 hours in Kid Icarus Uprising and I just finished the first challenge panel. That man and his team gave us more than our money's worth in an era where we're being scammed with full priced games with hidden DLC and microtransactions. I don't understand how people prefer those games.
As for Sakurai, a big bro hug. That man, does not only deserve money, but our warmest and honest gratitude.
Doing that sounds like microtransaction hell, that's not nintendo's style and it should stay that way.

Yeah, but minecraft's an indie game, and with indie companies there's often a more clear target in sight instead of dozens if not hundreds of people adding their input. In the end the goal of big companies is to make money quickly, Nintendo will see what similar games are doing, notice how successful that is right now for those kinds of games and go down that path. this is all tribulation, of course.

Sakuri did just that... he left it in the hands of gamers by giving 100% of the playable characters that have ever existed since the beginning... yet gamers themselves hate him for not including " *insert Waluigi here* " characters that they wanted... it will never end for him.. @@derekmartin5340 There are several problems with Waluigi that literally prevents him from being any revelevant for Nintendo themselves (and by extension, Sakurai), due to the fact Waluigi was intended as a filler for Wario's partner in Mario Tennis. Even thinking into a full moveset for him is hard. Wario, on the other hand, has his own series.

This theory is really well done and thought through. In fact, ever since ultimate was announced, me and my brother came with our own theory about the game. We still believe this is still the story of Masahiro Sakurai, but we made this a lot darker and sadder. I’ll start with melee, the sequel of Smash 64. This introduces crazy hand, the crazy master hand. His trophy says that he was the hallow feeling of destroying one’s own creation. This was Sakurai’s first point of what he was getting into, he wanted to end the series at melee, but the fans wanted him back, pulling him from the darkness to keep making their games, crazy hand is the embodiment of that. Brawl is next, and Subspace Emissary was AWSOME, but the story still continues. (Spoiler alert for those who haven’t played brawl’s Subspace.) At the near end of the game you meet Tabuu, a force controlling master hand like a puppet, tricking Ganondorf to do the wrong order. Ganondorf attacks, but is easily defeated, Master hand try’s to fight as well, but also beats him easily. While Game Theory’s point of Tabuu does make sense, I think it represents us, the players. The ones who keep Sakurai to keep adding what they want. We are controlling the creator like a puppet to keep adding more things for them, to make it more competitive. Sakurai made this game for fun, but all games have a competitive side to them, melee was a super competitive game, but still could be played be new players. Anyway back to Subspace, after beating the Great Maze, Tabuu tries to end all the characters again, but this time, forever. But at the last moment, Sonic swoops in and saves them all. Sonic represents those who support Sakurai, those helping him to keep going and make games. Then you defeat Tabuu, which is insanely hard to do sometimes, but after defeating him, or in this case, the players who keep asking for more, this is the players realizing (kinda) that they can’t ask for too much from Sakurai, and they will mostly respect what he does now. Smash 4 unfortunately does not have a story mode, but does introduce Master Core. Master Core, like Game Theory said, breaks out of Master Hand, this is Master hand losing his mind, and now can’t take anymore. While Crazy Hand escapes, Master Core, or the feelings of Sakurai, break out. Master Cores first mode is a giant person, and yes, each mode represents something. Mode one has a lot of moves that push the player away, this is Sakurai telling the player to go away, to leave him alone. Mode two is a scorpion, this mode is super offensive and likes to attack a lot. This is Sakurai now fighting the player to leave him be and stop bringing him back. Mode three is Sword mode, which has a lot of multi hit attacks one big swing move, and a five hit move. This one is Sakurai saying all the things he has done (multi hit moves) the main point of the game (The big swing) and the things he gets in return (The five hit move). Mode 4 is a copy mode, this is still Master Hands creativity still in Master Core. This is Sakurai saying that these are the characters he has created and that the sequals, which are meant to be better the the previous installments, are his hope that people will get off he’s back for making more Smash. Mode 5 (If your difficulty is high enough) is Master Fortress, a last line of defense to defend the ball. This is you getting into Sakurai’s head, this is his last line of defense against you, and each time you hit the Ball, your hitting points in his head, your saying, “I want this, I want this, I want this.” If you somehow manage to beat Master Fortress, you now hit his Core, the core that does nothing unless out don’t beat it in a certain amount of time. The music is dead, the timer has stopped, you can’t hear anything except your character beating the Core. This is Sakurai giving up, telling you that you win in the end, he can’t take it anymore and now he knows that what he wants to create isn’t what the fans want. Ultimate is him giving what the fans want, everyone is back, fan favorites are here, all just for you. He still has the bit of the game he wanted, but this new smash bros his him giving up and handing over what the fans want. This is my theory, and this is how I think Smash’s story goes. So the next time you fight Master hand and Master Core, think about what you’ve done, or not done, to Sakurai. The people that asked for more out of Sakurai, this is what you’ve done to Sakurai, the smash God. But Remember, that’s just a Theory, a Fan Theory. Thanks for reading.

The ironic thing is that many fans of Super Smash Bros probably have game design aspirations because of Super Smash Bros, which sheds so much light on Nintendo, and by extension, video game history. A "Damn, I want to be a part of that!" kind of feeling. A few may even want to be the one to take Sakurai's place. This video should be required viewing for anyone who does.

My small related theory is that Taboo is actually the Player, who's using Sakurai as their toys to force him and make more squeals of the game for their own enjoyment. As they don't realize that Sakurai is struggling and is wasting his own health on those games.

What a purely innocent and egoistic thought process. Let's break this into points or this will never end:
1. Yeah, there's only one every 4 to 5 years, but making a video game ain't easy, and it's most certainly not quick. It's a mountain of work, mistakes and backtracking, stress... Do you think he got that injury playing tennis or something?
2. Video games aren't human beings nor extremely advanced A.I. dude, they ain't gonna make themselves. I'm not naive enough to think he makes them on his own, but there's no guarantee (for us as much as for him) that Smash will evolve in the way he and we, the players, want if he leaves the Smash devs. And besides, I know a lot more games that fell from grace not long after their original creators let them go. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro...
3. Let's say your a painter. You make this exceptional piece of art that EVERYONE loves. Naturally, they want more. But what would you prefer as an artist: Making 3, 4, 5 or even 6 paintings from scratch, but look like the previous one with some slight modifications? Or would you rather, after a while, make something completely new and different, or at least anything else than that damn painting you've done so many times?
4. Nothing to say about that last thing, though I do think you're exaggerating quite a bit about Nostalgia vs. Game Quality.

I had a theory a bit back that Master Hand and Crazy Hand were actually Sakurais hands. Ever hear about how Sakurai is going through immense problems in his hand from developing Smash? No surprise Crazy Hand is so erratic and hard to control. And get this - his hand problems started in Melee!

Here is my theory about Ultimate:
MASTERHANDS: the creators of the different toys in the series.
GALEEM - main enemy: Something/someone bigger than the creators.
DESTROYED MASTERHANDS: symbolizes that the enemy is controlling the creators and the choices that they will make.
KILLING EVERYONE: by controlling the creators, it destroys the essence/identity of the characters that they made.
CLONE OF MARIO: The enemy tries to make the characters what they want them to be...
SPIRIT POSSESSING MARIO TURNING HIM EVIL: ... but by doing so, it made the characters not like what they supposed to be, making them very different and eerie.
KIRBY: I think this represents Sakurai, and he must do something to fix the system that the enemy has made, thus, rescuing the other characters and beating the enemy.
Since Kirby was one of Sakurai's first original Nintendo characters, if not the very first, maybe he chose Kirby in order to 'go back to the roots' of the series, and reinstate the original vision for Smash. Very interesting theory!

I understand that it's probably not your cup of tea, but I would love to see you take a dive into the lore of Dark Souls. The series never just straight up tells you anything, and it would be really interesting to see your take on what exactly is happening throughout the two games.
It would be very understandable if you didn't though. Exploring the universe would take an enormous amount of time and effort. Not to mention the frustration that naturally comes with playing the games.

You forgot to mention one thing. Smash 4 really wasn't supposed to happen. See, Smash 4 was "confirmed" back at E3 2012 at Nintendo's press conference about the Wii U when Reggie said that there was going to be a Smash Bros on the Wii U. Now, Sakurai hadn't even heard of the project as he felt like Smash didn't need another sequel and he was currently developing Kid Icarus: Uprising. This is where Namco Bandai comes in. Once Sakurai started development on the game he had a deadline to finish the game so it wouldn't be delayed like Brawl was. So he seeked the help of Namco Bandai since they have a history of releasing amazing games in small amounts of time. The reason I bring this up is because it's obvious that Samurai really didn't want to make this game, and it was probably one of the most stressful experiences of his life. Another point you forgot to bring up was that Samurai said at the beginning of 2013 that he didn't want more than 1 third party character in this game because he didn't want the game to lose the focuse of the Nintendo characters. In fact the only reason Snake got in Brawl because the creator of the MGS franchise practically begged Samurai to put Snake in Brawl. Now I think that the one third party character Sakurai was talking about was Sonic since he was in Brawl and he's the character that makes the most sense. But as we all know, Pac Man and Mega man got in this game and there were more third party characters than there were in Brawl. To me, the characters that represent these two instances are Tabuu and Master Core. Tabuu is Nintendo and the fans, because Nintendo pretty much forced Sakurai to make this game because they knew that it would save the Wii U (and it did). The reason Tabuu represents the fans is because they were pretty much harassing Sakurai to put in Mega Man and Pac Man. Master Core represents Sakurai because he said no in both cases, and while he didn't fight in the second case, he still said no and he planned to stand by it. Master Core strongly represents Sakurai in the first case because he refused to make Smash 4 until Kid Icuras: Uprising was finished. And just like Master Core, Sakurai gave in. He gave in to Nintendo and the pressure that was being put on him by the fans.He made the Smash 4 and he put Mega Man and Pac Man into it. Now I'm not saying I don't want another Smash Bros. game, I'm just saying Nintendo shouldn't have forced Sakurai to develop Smash Bros like they did. Now, I'm pretty sure that Sakurai was under a contract or something but if he didn't want to sign it then he didn't have to. But the thing about the third party characters is right. Stop requesting every single character from any media. You're just putting more pressure on Sakurai to do so. If he doesn't want to put Goku or Trevor Phillips in Smash Bros then he doesn't have to. (Though I will admit I would pay to see Trevor fight Ganondworf.) And he doesn't have to make another Smash Bros if he doesn't want to. I would rather not have another Smash Bros game than forcing someone to do something they don't want to do. And to 90% of the Smash Bros fan base: GOKU WILL NEVER BE IN SMASH BROS!!! DEAL WITH IT!!!!

Given what Sakurai has said on famitsu regarding the 3ds and some of the fan backlash over clone characters, I don't think this theory is that far off. I'm kinda suprised this vid didn't include material from the 3ds release and some of the quotes over fan concerns between that release and the wii-u one.
Nintendo is publically traded so if this is true. He is contracted not to say anything to belittle the company while he wants his job. After all if he gives it away that he is sick of making the game, less people will buy it. So in no way would we ever get the truth till he leaves his job.

1. Be him looking back at things and see whether the choices he made was right. We all have those moments where we choose to do things and accept things, but we don’t just move on we ponder those thoughts and see whether the choice we made was right. Naturally it can’t be right all the time and sometimes we know this, but that doesn’t stop the thought of us regretting our choices.
2. Him finally getting to move on. While it may be unlikely since it feels like it should happen later in the series it makes sense that after 5 games that should have been 2 or 4 you want to let go. He stayed because he still wants hold of his project, but should he be ready to let go he can move on.
3. People reaching out to him. While it’s stress on one person sometimes you forget the people that are willing to aid you and respect your actions. Because sometimes the whole of society can blind you of the little things that are in your life.
Personally, I think (taking into consideration, the main selling point for this next game is it's a reunion of past smash characters), It'll probably be the metaphorical "beach episode" of the series

Smash Ultimate is the"Ultimate Smash" and it's what the fans wanted. And with it, he will probably give it to us and just show us at he have lost the fight. He did lost it in Smash 4 and wants just to move on, but can't because of the fans. That's why he will end it all with what the fans wants and probably doing some kind of "suicide" to the series. With Smash 6 being a reboot.
Holy shit...this might be one of the best theories you've made. I'm a stickler for symbolism and I've always wondered what is the underlying message with Master Hand (especially in SSBB) so I can totally see where this is coming from. I feel sad for Sakurai, yes, but at the same time I would be very happy to know that he put so much of his personal feeling into this franchise; to know that in a way he is trying to convey his deeper feelings through what appears to be a crossover family brawl game. I very rarely 'like' videos due to laziness, but you sir have earned it!

Glad to know that I'm not the only one who thought of this. That and the Battlefield in Melee, where the core representing the battlefield that he's fighting on on the reflected side (Upside down) where it shows Sakurai's state of mind.
In 64, it was a Maze structure, representing brains, the thought.
Melee has the Core in rib structures (Heart is trapped within the franchise).
Brawl has Mountains within the view of the Roman coliseum (Fighting to be free)
Smash 4 3DS has Destruction with Clouds in the sky, probably representing heaven
Lastly there's Wii U which shows Re-Birth of old structures (like classicism) Especially with the Mountain and what I believe could be the coliseum in the shadows on the left when flipped.
2 More things before I stop talking
In Smash 4 U There are 5 Bosses after you kill Sakurai's Childhood
1. The Denial of loss, and Isolation. The Slashing of Arms to knock you away, the banging of his head on the floor to both confusion of what else to create in the series giving Brain Farts (Bursts) and forgiveness for the lack of a story mode (lol jk) The Screaming to make everyone go away, raising the whole final destination to the sky to die away.
2. That dang dog alligator. Dog in the society to follow what we want and make more. Aligator, (Sounds like Arigatou). The Rage that gives off Anger, that makes him want to Bite you, jump on you, screaming howls to scare you off with jolts.
3. The Knifes of Seppuku, Tries to cut your life down in replace of not making another game. Throwing blades, cutting you down. What else to say?
4. Being Depressed, he tries to make his problem look at himself (or herself) to see how it feels to strike at yourself. Lets not mention that it's a bigger version of you, with a stronger attack power. Sakurai wants us to feel his pain.
5. Master Fortress, Akurai's body accepts you. "My body is ready." Endorsed with Acidic Redbull (stomach acid) with a red Firey Curry filled body, Sakurai Welcomes you to go in there and Kill him to get it over with. Some of his creations still wants you out of him, to keep him alive, to work on other games. He'd rather be dead than to keep working on this. Once you cut the heart of of him, you know he's going to still want to fight back, so he makes you beat the living life out of what is left, to fly out of this game once and for all.
Last thing I want to say.
He should make one more game called Smash Bros Forever. Where all of the games are combined to represent his last memory before his final breath in the game franchise.

That was incredibly depressing. Not what I expected, but great video nonetheless.I am absolutely awful at smash bros, i just watch my friends play it and then wipe the floor with them in Mario Kart. I didn't know anything about the producer or his supposed ongoing trauma. If it's as you say it is then that's sad. But part of growing up is learning how to let things go. I mean it's not easy, but it's part of life. If Smash Bros is such a trial on him, he really should jut...you know...move on from it.
But then again, it's just a game theory ^.^ I really really love everything you make, MatPat and honestly hope you don't ever find yourself in the same position as Sakurai (supposedly). Because i need these videos to never ever end. Ever.

It is interesting how complex Sakurai is, I knew most of the interviews and quotes before the video. The interviews where he talks about not making Smash 4 competitive intentionally are interesting. His disdain for sequels is very refreshing since it is what a lot of people see, but at the same time everyone wants Air Ride 2, Pokemon Snap 2, and Smash 5, but not another effortlessly thrown together Mario or LoZ
Yeah, I had never heard those interviews. This was a really interesting episode, and I agree that his disdain for sequels is refreshing. I think part of it stems from the nature of sequels being repetitive, a lot of modern games (especially new FPS titles) feel like they just changed the background and setting and threw the game out. It's a hard balance between giving fans new content but making it different enough to make it worth re-releasing. I think that's why he's so stressed, in my mind Smash has peaked. I can't really think of anything that would really change the game. He wants to create more content but can't think of anything to improve on.

Well, Sakurai's story resonates with many gamers including me, growing up with games, growing up, and dealing with society's expectations.
Wait, let me get this straight.
He has to stay on because he doesn't want other people messing up the stuff he came up with, BUT he wants to move on and take his creativity in new directions.
He's resigned to the fact that new smash and kirby games will be made because of their popularity.
He's leaving his game in the hands of the player: both the player character and literally us.

Andrew Wang I don't think he wants us to stop playing Smash or Kirby. Perhaps more that we should enjoy what we have. He believes that a game should be a complete experience, so much that it shouldn't need a sequel or trilogy to feel complete. That's why he's already said he has no intentions of a Kid Icarus Uprising sequel because he doesn't think it needs a sequel.

Andrew Wang I think he meant that he wants us to enjoy the current games more (and to feel the complete experience, but that latter one goes against the fact they made DLC for the fourth game, meaning that he either retracted that latter statement, or that both versions of Smash 4 are pitiful excuses for a Smash game).
Either that, or he wants us to stop reclaiming sequels for Kirby and Smash games (technically, "Epic Yarn" and "Return to Dreamland" were supposed to be the last Kirby games, if we go by that logic. Same for Brawl, only for the Smash series).
