Usually Disney movies like this have been worked on for 3 to 5 years before they are actually released to theaters. It really is just a huge coincidence.
i have a theory. A FILM THEORY. Maybe Disney DID copy the actual film, they may have just planted french spies into France to look for good movie ideas and decided to take a gamble. After working on it for a while, they released it and it was a smash hit. MUCH MONIES.

fun little fact on the steamboat willie thing. TECHNICALY that movie already enterd public domain do to a formal error on the copyright notice(there where two additonal names between Disney and the copyright statement which under the copyright act of 1909 would made it null) which would have made it public domain untill the 1998 act
I think another weird part is how most of this lawsuit seam to be more so against Disney than Pixar. I mean they were involved but Pixar would have been in charge of most of the stuff that could and would be copied.

By the time of my telling it's now an urban legend. A classmate of mine told me that his dad pitched the premise of finding nemo directly to Pixar. He was a NJ dentist and children's author. His version was supposed to take place in New York instead of Sidney but the dental office was still consistent. My classmate's dad was so excited that he signed over the rights without reading the carefully reading the contract and basically got nothing. Pixar threatened to sue him for everything he had if he challenged them after the fact. This is all heresy from me though but maybe could be a good starting point for internet sleuths.

I appreciate mats research when the intro was playing I was concerned about the truth. But after hearing the full story it makes a lot of sense and made everything else fall into place, especially when you put the pay into perspective of how many copies and how much he paid. I have had the lucky privilege of taking the Disney animated studios tour in Florida, back then they were very open about giving out the details of their next 5 projects in the works. The explanation being that only one may be two of them will actually get finished, when more ideas, screen plays and scripts come along. The tour Included a step by step on how to draw one of the main characters from an upcoming feature. Disney are so confident of winning these kinds of lawsuit they intentionally allow paying customers to know their inner workings. In short it would not have taken much for this guy to visit Disney and take a similar tour, copy the premise idea of an upcoming unreleased feature and rush out copies of his own book.

Hey. So, something similar to this is happening with the movie Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Basically, an artist on the Archie Sonic comics copyrighted all the characters he made for the comics and when he didn't like what they were doing with them sued them and won so, eventually they retconned all those characters out of existence and Sega put down strict guidelines to prevent this happening again. Later on he tried to sue them saying that a group of enemies in a Sonic game they had made recently were based off characters he made and this case got dismissed. Now though he is trying it again first saying the way they used the Master Emerald in the movie was based off his character Enerjak (probably spelled that wrong) but, then when someone told him on Twitter that they stole his characters for Knuckles' father and people he added that to the case. I'd really like to see your opinion on this and think it would be a good video.

Or any movie. When it comes to casting. finding locations, making sets and props, shooting, and editing many films take over 2 years from getting green lighted to reaching the screen, Getting artists to draw thousands of pictures with consistent design and continuity takes even longer.

A little easter egg in Monsters Inc is that in Boo's room there is a bunch of toys laid out on the floor. One of those toys is an orange clownfish; could be Pierrot, could be Nemo but probably Nemo. Monsters Inc is from 2001 which was even earlier than Nemo and its previews
