thank you for your travels and filming this. I'm stuck at work for another 6 to 8 months and you guys are my only way out for now. Love these little towns.... Thanks again
We lived in Phoenix when I was a kid in the 70's and we would always head up north in the summer when my folks took vacation. Beautiful country up there. Nice video, thanks for posting.
My name is jackson. I lived in Salvador city, in the northwest of Brazil. In 2017, i trevelled in route 66. i loved williams. congratulations for you canal.
When I was a kid it was a treat to eat a kid-sized cheeseburger, fries and have a malt. Not every place had them, a kind of old timey drink by then had gone out of style.
Awesome video Russ. Also, wow the view count looks good. Williams looked to have a real nice park. Riding old trains is a lot of fun. Thanks and have a great day.
Last section complete on I 40, was the section between Seligman and Kingman, cut off quite a bit. When I went to CA for training in 1969, they were builting the interstates.
Back in the late 80s my brothers and my father and I hiked the Grand Canyon. Besides being a cherished memory of my father, who passed away less that 10 years later, that memory also included a rather humorous episode at Rod's Steakhouse (you passed it, Russ). Although I'd trained as much as I could for the hike, I found I was woefully inadequate for the hike as were my dad and brothers. We ended up pushing my father the last mile up out of the canyon! We stopped at Rod's for a 'celebratory' steak and, upon seeing us walking in all 'rubber-legged' the hostess remarked, "Hiked the Canyon, I see." LoL!
had a similar experience with a buddy years ago that SMOKED. I thought I'd be dragging his body back up the slope. Today, I'm wondering if I can do a mile!
Camped in the South Kaibab forest just North of Williams with a pal in 2003. I met a fellow traveller from Prescott Valley. We have become lifelong friends since ! I'm now an oldtimer Englishman from Shropshire, Jerry still lives in Prescott Valley. We regularly e email to keep in touch.
Thanks Russ for the ride through Williams. I wanted to check out where the Red Roof Inn is there and found it. Thought about staying there. I've stayed in North Phoenix and they are great especially with a cat traveling with me. Anyway, thanks I really enjoy the scenic drives for sure. I miss AZ a lot and will move back this year.
I remember before I-40 bypassed Williams we had to drive through downtown just like you did. Williams was the last town on Route 66 that was finally bypassed.
I was in Williams in May. I drove that same stretch of RT 66. We camped at Canyon Gateway RV Park. That was on my bucket list to see a little bit of RT 66 on our travels to see some of the National Parks in Colorado, Arizona, and Utah.
We spent the night in William's a few years ago. We ate dinner at this little corner Mexican restaurant that was in a very old (brick?) building. Inside they had paintings, photographs and news clippings from way back about the building. I wish I could remember the name of it. The food was very good there.
I love rte 66, I got a chance in 2020 to take it on my way from near Lake Havasu city to Oatman and then I went up to Kingman. After that I made all the stops along the way in most of those little towns including Seligman, Ash Fork and another one but I couldn't go to Williams, I needed to get to Flagstaff and it was getting dark, I finally went back to Williams last year...I'm kinda glad I had a reason to go back up North. That was an awesome trip eventually leading to Zion National park....most amazing place I have ever been! Quite the adventure! (too bad at the end? On the way back...MY CAR BROKE DOWN!)
I’ve always understood that rte 66 is/was a US hwy instead of a state hwy. I could be mistaken. Beautiful video Russ. Used to live in Havasu, it sure has grown
If you take the Seligman exit you can pick up 66 and it takes you through Peach Springs and the Indian reservations takes you right into Kingman it's a pretty nice drive
My Dad Bill Swan made a lot of iconic fiberglass statues which are placed along Route 66 like Paul Bunyan,Ford Mustang horse and others which can be seen in a short Amazon ebook for only 14.99 called "The man behind the mufflerman ".
This popped up on my YT to watch. We've stayed in the RV park in Williams & on 1 trip stopped for burgers & shakes. They were so delicious that we always stop now, except last time place was closed😭. Never stayed in any of their motels. 1 of these days we'll have to spend some extra time & take Gr Cyn rail trip. & you are so right about I40. All the years we've driven it between CA & NM, it's been terrible. Don't know why AZ can't seem to get its road repair act together on I40. Best thing about 40 is getting off on Rt 66 & going thru all the little towns like you're doing👍.
We spent the night in Williams a couple years back. Found a little Mexican Restaurant the next morning. They had The BEST green chili gravy in THE WORLD...WOW had to stop at Devil Dog road for a nap goin East lol
Russ, I love your channel. Do you think that you could from time to time seek out an old school in a struggling town for a little focus? You could comment on the old playground equipment, covered play area, fencing, whatever. Keep up the good work.
If you're referring to Williams,it's practically massive compared to years ago, because it's a total tourist trap, unless you're a first timer AVOID At all costs.
Russ You do realize that it is still hovering around 100 to 107 in Phoenix? This summer isn't shot yet! it's just starting t become camping season for us stuck in Phoenix! it's been too hot to even think of driving out of the valley! hahaha!
Russ, another great video, you're really condensing the history of our Great Nation by taking us through Route 66, In my opinion if you contact the Unified School District, they should add these videos as a part of driving through SmallTown USA series in their libraries for children to see our Land of Free from Coast to Coast. Just a suggestions worth looking into.
i bought a leather vest and stetson, at that western wear shop on main street. They also do specialty leather work. spent about $500.00 in 15 minutes!! At another shop on main street i got real lucky and a cowboy standing outside and down on his luck sold me his signed and numbered elk handle Bowie Knife, sheath and knife made by famous knifemaker he paid $1200.00, i paid $350.00, i had it appraised when i got home. Value $1500.00!!! my next trip i will do the train to the Canyon, Loved Williams town!! pete.
Love your videos. Does anyone know? Just saw on TV that Yellowstone caldera last blew 640K years ago. Could that explosion help explain why the Grand Canyon has those otherworldly formations?
Ive Been To Williams Lots.Of Times And Have Always Loved The Area Almost Moved Their At One Time But Everthing Fell Through !!! It Was Named For An Old West Mountain Man Named Bill Williams Who Was Killed At The Entrace To Grand Canyon !!! F. G. D.
The first time my husband drove west to California in the the late 60s, I40 wasn't finished yet, so he drove US 66 when it was still The Route 66 you had to take. When we would drive I 40, he would show me the parallel road that was the old decommissioned US 66. He said parts were fun, some were just getting tired and ready to be replaced by Interstate Highway, the traffic was too high and trucks too heavy for the older 2 lane system. But we did occasionally get off I40 to go through some of Route 66 and see some of the attractions.
I believe Route 66 went from Chicago to Los Angeles and it was called the Mother Road a lot of people left the East and went West even during the Great dust bowl depression-era a lot of Oklahomans found their way out to California it was a major thoroughfare for sure
Ash Fork had a lot of bad luck and has never really recovered. In November, 1977 a fire destroyed much of it's downtown and in 1979 was bypassed by I-40. I've read two references in that the people ate at one restaurant and the service was poor, courtesy was almost non existent and the food wasn't cooked properly. Also a Route 66 book that came out some years ago didn't recommend any place in the town. This was some years ago and things could have changed since then as far as accomodations go.
vern wallen : Dad was in the service. We moved from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Oakland, California when all there was Route 66. We were in 50’s Chev station wagon with the three seats.
Stayed in motor hotel in 2017😂. Paid almost 100 dollars for the room what a ripoff the room was so small you couldn’t open the door all the way because it hit the bed. The shower rod kept falling while showering. You couldn’t pay me to stay there again. Thank goodness we were only staying one night. But the Grand Canyon was great. Be safe and have fun.
Everyone makes a big deal out of Route 66 and I don’t get it. I’m a disabled truck driver and I probably drove that road 20 or 30 times maybe more and that is the most boring road.
Williams beautiful place to go in the somer time good job nice video

Cool seeing You pass by my building (1960 DeSoto on roof)! Please stop by again!
9.55 that diner has the best Malts ever! We always stop there when we go through Williams.
When I was a kid it was a treat to eat a kid-sized cheeseburger, fries and have a malt. Not every place had them, a kind of old timey drink by then had gone out of style.
Love route 66. Driven on it before I 40 was finished in 1970.
Thanks I will some day take route 66 to see all the small towns been wanting to do that for years
We have a little place about 9 miles north of Ash Fork. The sunsets are amazing. Thanks for driving through and sharing. Tony, Joy and Frank
How do you like living out there? I'm buying land I'm Seligman. Is there much work out there
Love Williams AZ, neat little town and a beautiful area.

This brought back happy memories ❤️ love those blue skies
Sorry to hear about the poor condition of I40. It was fantastic in 2009 when I drove it between Flag and Williams.
I’ve always understood that rte 66 is/was a US hwy instead of a state hwy. I could be mistaken. Beautiful video Russ. Used to live in Havasu, it sure has grown

Thanks for the tour. Liked Elvis
Seems I-40, New Mexico. and Az, has never ending road work. Beautiful country. Thanks again Russ
Must be great to get your kicks on Route 66.
My Dad Bill Swan made a lot of iconic fiberglass statues which are placed along Route 66 like Paul Bunyan,Ford Mustang horse and others which can be seen in a short Amazon ebook for only 14.99 called "The man behind the mufflerman ".

The gas station on the left at 4:20 was still open in Google Maps.

harley dude yes. It’s on the list
Rte 66 STARTED in Illinoiss it ENDED AT THE SANTA MONICA PIER in Calif.!!!!!
Have you done Seligman?
