When we stayed in cottonwood a few years back we visited both places, montezumas castle and tuzigoot. Tuzigoot was down the road from us in cottonwood. You could actually walk through tuzigoot. Montezumas castle was about 30 mins away and very impressive cliff dwellings. Tuzigoot was a community built into the hillside and very well restored. It was amazing to be able to stand in these ancient dwellings and imagine what life was like for these ingenious and resourceful people back then. Thanks for posting
It truly is beautiful!! I lived at Rimrock Airport (explains why I love the aerials) worked Flagstaff Medical and VVMC in Cottonwood. I loved it and all surrounding areas more than words can express. Air is pristine, water is pure, seasons are very comfortable, scenic, a lot of history and last but not least the people I was blessed to meet filled my heart with abounding joy and love that will never be forgotten. Thank you Russ. 💞👍
I loved the video. I have never heard of the Castle. My traveling years are over, and I love riding shotgun with you. I've traveled a lot, but you're going to places I missed in my travels.
Hi Mary. I can say just about the same thing. I was self-driving through this region way back in 1993, I live in NSW Australia. A lot of 'water under the bridge' since then. Be well.
Thanks Russ for our school time today at Montezuma's Castle. Can't imagine living that far up the hill. Wonder how they made it up and down each day? Arizona has so many beautiful places to go to and not just the desert sand. Stay safe on your travels Russ!
Hello Russ, Thank you for sharing the castle, Made history many years ago, very nice someone is restoring the castle. You take very nice videos. Thanks Larry &Linda
I drove what is now I-17 back in 1969 when there was an occasional passing lane and a couple of divided four lane sections. Wonderful piece of highway for a newly returned Vietnam Vet. Nobody shooting at me.
Hey Russ, you passed my exit on SR 69 to Prescott. The flat plateau is lush green in the spring. I hope you make the drive from Sedona and head north thru Oak Creek canyon. Take care very windy yesterday.
Always a pleasure, glad you take us along....Thought provoking though, like, why would ancient peoples build such a place so close to a busy highway ? .... LOL ... Stay safe...
I've been there. Russ. I forgot its name. Once you had walked out of the visitor center onto that paved walkway I started to remember. It was a long time ago. We had lunch in Sedona that day in a cliffside cafe. Thanks for bringing the memory back to me.
I came here in 1992, looked different in those days. I also visited Montezumas Well, a large sunken pothole pond full of a evil looking water. English oldtimer again reliving some past adventures.
I've taken that ride many times through the years, it never gets old. There's a restaurant in Sedona called the 'Hideway' great Italian food with a deck in the back with a nice view. I recommend going up to Sedona during the week, the weekend's are to congested with traffic.
How many times I drove that road before it was an interstate and during its creation into a highway! I’m Class of ‘69 NAU. 1966-1969. Remember the runaway truck pullout ramps (high sloping piles of gravel) on the downhill slopes of the road as elevation changed as road climbed through hills towards Flagstaff. Scary driving 2-lane stretches of twisting old road in the mountains when it snowed hard.
Big Wave Russ....We are moving in to those Montezuma condo's....LOL What a treat for these sore eyes....Thanks Russ for taking us along on your journeys. How are you all down there. Are you celebrating your democracy today......Having Biden and Kamala in will make a difference to the environment I hope...for democracy to reign supreme and not authoritarian rulers moving in. Boy we have a fight on our hands for sure....Good on America. May you be blessed all through your lives Russ....Carolyn and Colin Hogarth Canada. Big Wave to you all.....
I used to hunt this country when I was young. 1960's Took a quarter oz. gold from Cordes Junction. Got some gold from turkey creek also. Found a real nice nugget in Lynx Creek.
we saw the same or a lot of the same stuff,, lots of trash on the side of road, when we came down couple weeks ago from St George to Vegas.. The amount of stuff on the side on I-15 was appalling. They really need to outlaw the plastic grocery bags as that was what you saw the most of. currently in verde valley RV park and the castle is on the list of stuff to see so this is right on time.. cheers.
A question & comment Russ! Q: How did members of that cliffside dwelling get up there to that first big one? C: I'm amazed how much fast moving traffic was on that hwy leading to the Castle..
I’ve been to Montezuma Castle and other areas shown in this video. Loved it. Have you been to Canyon de Chelly? I’ll have to look through your videos to check it out. You call that congestion? Try Seattle to Tacoma any time of the day.
I took this rest area stopped there on way to Grand Canyon but it was 4 a.m. basically only us & truckers on the road. How about a trip to Jerome? 😯Lol
So beautiful! We just purchased an RV and am curious what the best RV clubs would be to join and any suggestions on websites and making reservations would be appreciated!! Thanks, from Gilbert, AZ!!!
Hay Russ: You wondered where they got their water?? You walked through a VERY old river bed. The hill it's self is a volcanic material called "Tuff" a soft stone that is quite easy to carve; so between a good sized river and an easy rock to carve a home from, they had it made in the shade!!!! ;-D They built those cliff dwellings under the cliff that way to hide from the sun!!! Not the heat, the climate was much different then. No, they were hiding from Plasma blasts and tremendous electrical discharges of extreme magnitude !!! You should have a look at some rock art from that era, hire a local interpreter to explain what you are seeing!!!! It was a VERY different world then, a world of changing extremes!!! There are web sites dedicated to the shapes, those shapes remain the same worldwide!!!! In Cappadocia Turkey they have the same rock, and those people carved whole city's underground!!! Hay thanks for the lift, lovely country!!!!

Nice memories of the area. Visited Montezuma castle 9 months ago, but visit the area twice a year to see my daughter who lives close by.
Thanks Russ for our school time today at Montezuma's Castle. Can't imagine living that far up the hill. Wonder how they made it up and down each day? Arizona has so many beautiful places to go to and not just the desert sand. Stay safe on your travels Russ!

Another great video Russ! 👋😊
Love that drive up to Verde Valley and Cottonwood
I really enjoyed my visit to Montezuma Castle. I wandered and explored every crook and cranny I was allowed to. I hope to go down again. Great video.
That is so cool of a place! Love that area. Went to Prescott a few years ago and it was such a beautiful drive. Keep on putting out the videos!
The drive from Cottonwood over the hump through Jerome is stunning. Highly recommend it.
Hey Russ!!! A "GREAT" Day for a "DRIVE"!!! Scenery always "BEAUTIFUL" on that drive!!!
I like your narration. Glad speed is good so we can see everything.
Thanks Russ! Brought back many fine memories. Did the same route in 2002 and 2007, enjoyed stopping there both times.
Hello Russ,
Thank you for sharing the castle,
Made history many years ago, very nice someone is restoring the castle.

Larry &Linda
Mum’s the word on you making that wrong turn, Russ. No one will know!👌
Thanks for sharing. Went there over 30 years ago. I remember it was dirt walkway.
I drove past it last August 2021. I'll totally mark it on our next go-to list
Castle looked the same to me over 50 yrs ago Thanks

A favorite of mine. Another is Tuzigoot by Cottonwood.

Hey Russ, you passed my exit on SR 69 to Prescott. The flat plateau is lush green in the spring. I hope you make the drive from Sedona and head north thru Oak Creek canyon. Take care very windy yesterday.
I enjoyed that little stretch of highway and visit, following on Google Earth, I feel like I've been there now. Thanks
Your videos are very well done and excellent quality! Thank you! I enjoy your trips!
I have gone there twice,,I love the feeling I get in that part of the country.
I've been wanting to see that place forever, thanks russ
Have fun and take care and take it easy and enjoy it
Awesome! Still kind of stuck here on LA....but feel like I am on the road. Thanks Russ!
Oh yeah, me and my "old man pass" have got to see that! I like looking at old houses, and those are some old houses! Thanks Russ
Always a pleasure, glad you take us along....Thought provoking though, like, why would ancient peoples build such a place so close to a busy highway ? .... LOL ... Stay safe...
Beautiful place! Must visit. Thanks Russ 🚐🚐
This video is very helpful. Easy access off I-17 makes for a nice stop.
I was just there also. It was very interesting to see.
Makes me homesick, I use to live in Camp Verde and worked at the Cliff Castle Casino.
🙋♀️Hello Russ! Montezuma's Castle was neat. Interesting to see how other people lived. Loved the yellow truck!👍 As always, I enjoy your videos.
Also you can drive East on the 260 towards payson about 4-5 miles across from the Dollar General are cliff dwellings you can hike up to
I love that place.

Awesome video I used to live in camp Verde yes Montezuma Castle is a very cool place I used to visit there a lot 🏜😎👍 HELLO from ARIZONA TOURIST 🏜😎👋
WOW where you stopped at the rest area is wear we had to stop to add water lol
Even parts of Arizona look like Australian bushland 👍🇦🇺🇦🇺

Howdy Russ!
Gorgeous!
You have a voice of an airline pilot over the PA system letting us (passengers) know what interesting features we can see outside the window =)

Done this trip many times, but heck, if you’re driving A N D paying for the gas, then I’m on board ! ! !
Thanks for the video. It has been a long time since I was there 2003 I think. I don't remember a visitors center then.

1:22 Look at the face in the rock on the right. Cool
My luck would be for me to walk to see, Montzuma Castle, and walk away with Montezuma's revenge.
Been down 17 from flagstaff to Phoenix but not there thanks for the video
thanks Russ.
A question & comment Russ! Q: How did members of that cliffside dwelling get up there to that first big one? C: I'm amazed how much fast moving traffic was on that hwy leading to the Castle..
i think they made a ladder, can you imagine falling off the ladder?
@@babsfocker7751 no!
We saw quite a few people dry camping up by Overton, lake Mead yesterday
Too cool for Ghoul (Halloween theme, Russ)!! har har
Amazing
Went there a couple of years ago nice to see . We were returning from sodona and stopped there . Thx for the ride along 💕😊💕
hey Russ ... you should check out Montezuma's Well sometime. it's up the road a bit north outside of Sedona.
Wow!
We were there in spring 2019 and there was lots of water in the creek bed. Surprised it is dry now.
I’ve been to Montezuma Castle and other areas shown in this video. Loved it. Have you been to Canyon de Chelly? I’ll have to look through your videos to check it out. You call that congestion? Try Seattle to Tacoma any time of the day.
Black canyon and copper canyon will kill your car, never go up them with A/C on that'll cause an overheat
It reminds me a lot of Mesa Verde Indian homes from long ago.
I-17 is a nightmare anywhere around the start/end of a holiday weekend.
In the mid-60's we visited and they allowed people to crawl up there and look around.
You should check out wupatki ruins
I took this rest area stopped there on way to Grand Canyon but it was 4 a.m. basically only us & truckers on the road. How about a trip to Jerome? 😯Lol
But it would be so fun to go aroulnd a couple times in the roundabout!!! :)
Went there in 1976 as a kid and you could go up in the ruins. Couldn’t in 1999 when I took the family there.
To many tourists means to much damage.
Been to both a couple of times
I love AZ but I hate the heat in summer 🔥👀 lol
So beautiful! We just purchased an RV and am curious what the best RV clubs would be to join and any suggestions on websites and making reservations would be appreciated!! Thanks, from Gilbert, AZ!!!
hi Good sam is a popular RV Club. I dont belong anymore but some like it. I found that most parks have their own websites anymore.
Hay Russ: You wondered where they got their water?? You walked through a VERY old river bed. That's a place Bamm Bamm and Pebbles would have been performing at... four star resort.
How long of a walk from parking to castle
first time I was at the castle you could actually climb up into it
You had zero traffic just a blur once in awhile
That casino was not there when I was there. In the 70's.
Chuckle, dont tell anyone I took a wrong turn.🤗
People that liter are disgusting. The road I live on has litter all the time were people drive through and throw their trash. Disgusting
