I definitely agree, but I also appreciated how hesitantly and awkwardly Christine approached and touched Johnny. She clearly showed that Beverly had never let herself be vulnerable with anyone before, or shown genuine affection.

I got the feeling that he dealt with something like this in real life. I felt the emotions he was putting off and the sniffling at the very end was real, and he tapped into that for this scene kind of like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air scene where he tells his dad to get out of his life and he has that amazing hug with uncle Phil.

I’ve seen this episode a million times and I’m just now realizing Beverly was actually crying. That type of realization that you never know you needed something till you got it is amazing. She never knew how much she wanted to hear her son forgive her for not being the best parent until he actually said it and it sunk in. Top tier acting.

I can't help but think there was a moment before this, possibly *years* ago, when she had a moment of clarity for how her actions affected Leonard but simultaneously realised that no matter what she did *now* it wouldn't erase the past, so she just accepted that their relationship was irrevocably broken and it was on her and she didn't have the emotional capacity to fix/make up for it. She never thought she could be forgiven so him *actually* forgiving her was both unexpected and a relief that she probably never expected to happen anywhere but her deathbed.
Or maybe I'm giving her too much credit, who knows.

The years of research 🧐 of trying understand emotions and human psychology to help understand really herself. She had a deep resentment of really herself despite all her accomplishments. She didn’t understand love ❤️ because you can’t understand it really if you don’t how to love ❤️ yourself. Leonard in this moment finally gave her that answer

It doesn’t justify any of her actions and behavior towards her son and family, but Beverly is essentially a further set in her ways version of Sheldon or what Sheldon could’ve become if he hadn’t met and then started having more people that he would eventually call his friends and family come into his life.
And this is just my speculation here, but since she’s a worse version of Sheldon, then I don’t think it’s too far a stretch to think that she truly isn’t aware of the impact of her actions outside of the ones that she intentionally does to cause harm or discomfort or disrespect…
She’s emotionally and socially… Immature? Compromised? Ignorant?
Basically, she doesn’t see or understand why others react - in this case Leonard - the way they do to her actions when they aren’t done with a negative intention.
It reminds me a little bit of when Sheldon ended up offending Dr. Emily and apologized to her on the party bus to Vegas.
Again, it doesn’t justify the things that she’s done because she has purposely done shitty things without caring or taking into consideration the long term affects, thoughts and feelings of others - Leonard’s many tales of all the “heartwarming memories” from his childhood growing up in the Hofstadter home in Jersey is plenty of evidence along with her visits to Pasadena…
It would be too easy to just call her an evil person or just a bitch, but I think more than anything she’s just a deeply flawed individual who wants to “connect” but doesn’t know how.
It certainly would explain her reaction to all of this and why it felt good for her son to forgive her… And why she almost timidly hugged him.

What I can see in this scene is that Leonard did the "forgiving" more for himself than for his mother. Sometimes it's better to just let go of something than to stubbornly cling hard on to it despite not getting what you want. Do note that part of why Leonard has issues in himself is that he is trying very hard to gain Beverly's approval even when it doesn't seem that she will give it to him. The relief Leonard felt when he chose to "forgive" her than to call her out for everything that made her a failure of a mother is proof of that.
Leonard realized that from that point on, he doesn't need to gain his mother's approval in order to complete himself. That there is emotional maturity. Some people may not like how he addressed the Beverly issue, but it is a valid way to do so nevertheless.

    So well-acted, very moving scene.
I always identified with Leonard a tiny bit in his difficult relationship with his mother. My dear mom was not really very much like Beverly, but she *was* blunt and abrupt and impatient. With 5 kids, me being the youngest, I get that… but my tender sensitivity was always a little shattered by it. She loved us fiercely but wasn’t demonstrative with it. I did totally forgive her for any unintended hurts (and they were ALL unintended - she did everything that she did out of the best, selfless reasons, truly). I never told her that because I think that would’ve hurt her greatly to know I was hurt by anything she did or didn’t do.

really great scene but this also highlights one of the biggest problems with the big bang theory. there shouldn’t have been a single moment where the audience got told to laugh or whatever in this scene. it should have been dead silent because this is supposed to be a huge moment for leonard, yet within 40 seconds of it starting, there’s audience laughter where it shouldn’t be. young sheldon did this so much better and i don’t get why the new spin-off show had to undo it but chuck lorre and his writers during TBBT rarely actually gave this show the serious moments it deserved without flattening the meaning with unnecessary laughter

The thing is, was it? Or was it that she called Research. She comes off a lot like Sheldon and it took a long time for Sheldon to accept his feelings and how others interacted with those feelings. Beverly would compartmentalize because she didn't understand her emotions. She made herself detached to avoid any hurt on her part. But she wasn't blind that she was hurting her kids but as someone who doesn't understand others she never really knew how much. Sheldon doesn't think he is hurting his friends feelings when he acts or how badly he doesn't intend to hurt them he just doesn't know what will and what won't. Beverly is the same way. So while she might have actually enjoyed spending time with Leonard to protect herself she would call it research, she would view it as such because it keeps it at arms length.

It's good to forgive. But that woman was absolutely toxic to Leonard for his entire life, and she never changed. After he left home, he should have never let her back into his life. She's an accomplished author in child psychology and knew exactly what Leonard needed in terms of emotional wellbeing. But she didn't give him that because she "simply had no interest" in putting in that effort. And she never had any remorse for it either. It would have been much healthier for him to forgive her while also distancing himself from her until she did show true remorse for her actions (or lack thereof).

I can understand a bit since I hate socializing too. I KNOW HOW, but I do not have the capacity to do it. I rarely pick up on social cues and I only see my own well being. Even if I hurt others. When your belief contradicts what is drilled into you, it becomes a war within you. And most of the time, you choose to ignore what is taught.
Truth is, Beverly should have been reported to the DCFS the moment they discovered that she used Leonard for her "experiments". She was unfit to be his mother. She was the culprit in ruining Leonard's life yes but she is a victim too. Sheldon would have become like her if he did not have Mary. Or worse. Beverly was not so lucky in having her parents.

Trust me, this is realistic. You're never going to have that big fight moment when you tell everything you don't like about you're family, and they'll apologize to you. And if you do, it won't go as planned.
Everyone will always have flaws, more or less toxic, and you can't change that, no matter how munch rage you put in you're facedown with them. But someone can try to live with they're flaws.
So either you hate them forever, or you learn to live at peace with them and their flaws, with the hope that they'll to. Trust me, I've been through it, it may not sound like the big justice moment everyone wants, but it is the best thing for everyone.

This was too quick. This should've have been a multi episode arc that built up to this point. Leonard's mother shouldn't have been reacting , she should've been ambiguously evolving until she reached this tipping point. Seems like producers have a habit of tying up loose ends because tge series was winding down and it felt rushed.

    • @SpockBorg5
      @SpockBorg5 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

A build up would be an accumulation of incidents until the situation reached a critical mass. For example, say Leonard earned tenure on the show, and his mother barely reacted to it , that would've been something that raised Leonard 's blood pressure. The fact that Leonard 's mother was was going over his shoulder only conversing with sheldon should 've been a major bone of contention. As a matter of fact it should've been something that Leonard called out sheldon on that should've put a strain on their friendship. Instead we got flip flopping, one moment Leonard's mom would seem to realize the error of her ways and show some humanity, but a few episodes later she's back to being a cold hearted bitch. Simply having Leonard seemingly consigned to the fact that this is how his situation is always going to be and all of a sudden he has a meltdown in the last season just seems rushed. At very least it should've been a 2 parter just to deal with this. This was also a missed opportunity to build upon Sheldon's character, by having him realize that this is how he treats other people so he stands up for his friend.

She behaves this way because 1) she doesn't really care how people feel and 2) she's always allowed to get away with it. Leonard had a chance to giver her real consequences that she deserved but he just gave up at the last second because he knew it would only serve to hurt himself.

Tbh, I feel like Mary deserved credit in this episode. Even though, she wasn't in it, I like to believe her being around Leonard over the years, her preaching about the Lord really took effect on him. One of the things that we learn from the bible is forgiveness and we don't make any progress with aggression and hatred in our heart. Nobody's perfect and despite Beverley actions towards Leonard, I like to believe that she did the best that she could as a parent. So this for sure was a heartwarming moment. I just wish Mary was in this episode.

Kind of corny that there was a positive outcome since all things considered, Leonard had more than enough rights to walk away from his mother when he realized she was never actually a mother the entire time. But it's a sitcom and the series had a lot of situations that ended ridiculously instead of actuality. Best example of that is Sheldon messing with Leonard, Raj, and Howard's bitcoin venture just to get back at them because they didn't want him in on said venture. Leonard had every right to knock out a few of Sheldon's teeth at that.

I’ve always been under the impression that the authors wanted us to believe that Beverly loved her son, despite her countless Flaws as a mother. And there was some kind of development in that regard, like when she was so happy to see him getting married and approved Penny because she could see how the girl Made him happy. But they should have handled the ending better, it was way too rushed and that woman took a huge step back with that experiment shit. What a shame.
In the end I still like this though: he did it for himself, not for her. And it was the right thing, he deserved it. She didn’t.

Yes, Leonard needs to accept that she will not change. That doesn't mean he needs to continue to be a doormat to someone who makes it a point to be a negative aspect of his life. And if he has kids? You can guarantee Beverly will crap all over them the way she did him whatever chance she got.

2nd: Re George in Young Sheldon - Hey TBBT channel why don't you upload AN EDITED version of the scene with Penny & Sheldon eliminating or rewriting the scene that was RETCONNED.
hahahaha lol it's totally a retcon this is exactly the solution i had in mind except i couldn't think of how it was a retcon. COME ON how is this not a retcon?
the writers should've owned up and said 'pretend the scene with penny never happened and now we're doing a new thing'
Sheldon even had that catholic confession thing w/ Tam over something not as big as adultery. And you think Sheldon would keep quiet over adultery??!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA the writers should rewrite that scene with sheldon & penny.
What they could've done is say 'hey we changed our minds. Actually it makes more sense Sheldon's dad isn't a neglectful drunk. Sheldon's dad's support is a big part of why Sheldon is so successful. We'll rewrite TBBT scenes later. Bear with us please.'
    Better than a RETCON.
