    Amazing video. I have to say Rob, I think you're a fantastic speaker. You have mastered the balance between entertainment and information. Your videos are exceptional and truly are a key piece of the community. I believe you are essential to age of sigmar as a whole and games workshop would do well to acknowledge your contribution.

    Rob, this is a great primer for the newer player like myself. Having examples of units that matched the jargon used by experienced players let me visualize units in my own army that matched. But as an older fella, maybe slow down just a tad. You love this game so much and get so excited talking about it you speed up. I had to rewatch a couple of sections to get all the words in my brain. GREAT vid man, I'm going to absolutely rewatch this 100 times and share it in my Discord.

    The new Hedonites of Slaanesh battletome is fascinating from this perspective. I'd be eager to see an analysis of it in this lens - units and even the whole army (tempo, archetype, etc) all seem to change as depravity accumulates - and then change back when depravity is spent!

  • @dradney
    @dradney ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think a great example of tempo is Poker. You have times when players are putting in the bare minimum and times when players are all in. If you are always going all in… or never going all in, your play becomes predictable, and other players can manipulate the game state to work against you. Winning players use each strategy as a tool in their kit… and timing those moves is crucial.

  • @colonelcabbage
    @colonelcabbage ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Good stuff!
    Maybe there’s another archetype, a now you see me/bait and switch/ambushy type one where an army is able to drastically adjust where in the board it applies pressure?
    Thinking BoC/Nighthaunt (deployment and boat boy)/Scions SCE/Gaunt Summoner Builds/Lurid Haze/just teleports or extreme mobility.

      @l337haxz0rn00b ปีที่แล้ว

      Not that I've seen it be very successful yet but BoC Darkwarkers do this too by jumping from one side of the board to the other. I thought of it as a subtype of control because by moving your models, the opponents models placement is less effective since you jumped out of the threat range.

    Coming from Magic, I was used to a really high standard of content creation. Taking the plunge into not only a different hobby, but a completely different kind of game, I looked all over for people making videos and podcasts and stuff about the hobby to help me get settled in.
    It's along that journey that I realized that I was kind of spoiled coming from Magic. Not to hate on anyone, but a lot of what I saw wasn't as refined as what I was used to.
    You (and Goobertown Hobbies) are really in a class of your own. I am pretty well accustomed to the painting and building parts of the game now, but as I now look to get stuck into the gameplay, your channel has been of tremendous help. Thank you!

    Nice work on this video! I really enjoyed how comprehensive and practical the breakdowns are and I especially like how Rob broadly explained why he categorizes things like archetypes, unit roles, etc... as he was doing it and then invited people to post their own. By prefacing it with his explanation he gives the posters a rough outline they can use to frame theirs, meaning: it establishes a point of reference or a lingua franca for AOS discussion. A bulk of this applies to ME:SBG, but it seems like the nuance of the ruleset and terrain interaction undermines a true 1:1 exchange of applicability. It's a great base though. I think the "Roles" concepts translate well, but the "Archetypes" don't translate. Or maybe they do and I'm just not experienced enough. At any rate, great content.

    Skirmisher archetype maybe? Bunch of Lumineth Foxes and Roos or Idoneth Sharks Skew. You move around and shoot or charge power into a limited area, picking off the relevant enemy pieces while minimising the amount of damage you take in return. Then later game you have taken out enough of the enemy to start scoring big.

    I think you can include 1 sub-type of units more: The Suicide squads.
    A units who you throw to an enemy line, do a big damage blocking 1 turn the enemy first line and even they can do some serius damage before die. BUT you can ress half of the unit after that. An example of that can be the New Glomspite squig Herd, (who can be really annyoning because if he have the Indomitable tryumph can be a hell deal with it), 20 Splintered fangs in a Ravagers army or 20 Grave ward, etc.
    You can consieder ir a extreme sub-type of glass cannons or pinning units, because they die in the turn after do the damage, but you can ress him by other ways. (In the case of squigs they can even survive).

    Wow. Thank you so much for these videos. I understand why I have liked the first two videos I have watched now from you. It is language. And in this video you explain how the LANGUAGE is invented as we go. How terms didn't always exist. And using a movie language with commonly known archetypes like LOTR is brilliant. I struggle with a lot of competitive game videos and battle reports because the language being used is specifically geared towards competitive gamers. You are bridging the gap, sir. Love it. 1 icebrow hunter (convert 1 bloodbowl troll)
    4x2 frost sabers ( use the 40k squig riders for orks without the rider).

      @@TheHonestWargamer A video on Tempo would be great. I think my game falls apart when I read the game as more of a poker bluff for when to push or consolidate, it's not a trick just maximizing from options.
      Is 'wrong' tempo bad play or a problem brought over from list building that translates into the game?

    Very important video! Made me think. I run SCE with 2 x 3 Longstrikes, 1 x 4 Fulminators, 1 x Aetherwing and 1 x Prosector with 3 x cheap battleline and support characters. I suppose I play Counterstrike while being ready to Alphastrike in certain situations. I screen my three Hammers, so there is some Castle in my design as well? Looking forwards to more of your thoughts on Tempo

    Hey Rob! Even though I'm not an aos player, I love your videos. I'm just wondering if all this came up as an excersise ("we need to find a name for this type of unit") or more like gradually and spontaneously ("oh this unit is like an anvil) ?

    Thank you for this really great video! What do you think about new BoC? I would guess they are mostly versed in control lists and have basically a low tempo, but I'm quite new to the game so most probably I'm wrong

    • @TheHonestWargamer
      @TheHonestWargamer  ปีที่แล้ว

      They have no sustain like 4+ rally or summoning. They have cheap units to trade but struggle to build brawler damage. Feels like control or alpha builds will work

    Amazing video. Awesome sharing. List building is very important, but something that NO ONE ever dive deep is the art of Deployment.
    Deployment is a very complex skill and is highly reactive, changing with battleplans and opponent's army list. So many dos and do nots and consideration that it will make you go back to review or change your list.
    What's your take about this critical and essential skillset? Do you think that it is difficult to methodically explain and do a video?

    Now i have more questions than ever.
    Can I Ask for help with describing armies?
    Not sure what playstyle they are good at.
    Flesh eaters courts? Alpha strike?
    Kruleboyz?
    Fyreslayiers?
    Karadron overlords?
    Thanks guys!
