In an AoS Mondays show not long ago, you said that you wanted to produce content that was more professional and of greater use to people playing the game. This is precisely that. Thanks very much for a truly excellent video, Rob. The extra effort is definitely paying off. Keep up the good work.

this is unreal! as a new player this is exactly the type of content i want to learn how to become a solid player. particularly like the diagrams but perhaps one feature which would push this over the top would be a deployment map in general? i know battleplans decide that but in general a rough idea of the shape of the army would be amazing to see.

yes, charts are perfect could be nice to have an "idea" of a deployment !
I don't know if that's possible, but maybe take pictures from games to show us examples
      Solid video, keep it up

Heres a pitch: Do 2 videos like this with two different armies, then shoot a video of a game between the 2 armies. Then we'll get to see the theory behind making these lists work, and then the actual list working. You could also find a battle rep of those lists online and break it down based on the master class info. Either way, you're doing great work!

  • @sharp_shooter9715
    @sharp_shooter9715 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great stuff, I'd like to see some breakdown scenarios for the "how to beat this list." For example, to beat this list you have basically 4 options:
    1. Ignore it and try to win through durability, summoning, reviving, damage soaking on objectives or whatever (what might that look like?)
    2. Kill Teclis (either through winning a turn 1 roll off or having enough firepower to get through his 5+ ward after buffing - what factions have a chance?)
    3. Kill the sentinels (what are some of the best ways to target them?)
    4. Attack the castle (Hero phase attacks, shooting attacks, reserve unit options and then flying movement/pile-in shenanigans to hop over the wardens). Maybe a Lauchon from out of unbind range on a mobile alpha wizard lol
And then talk through some of the scenario results. How much do would you gain if the gambit was successful. Or how exposed/vulnerable would you be if that gambit was unsuccessful. What kinds of things do you need to mitigate some of the output of this list.
    --------------------------------------------
In my person opinion, I think a Celestial Vindicators (offensive)/Hallowed Knights (defensive) Stormcast dragon army has a good chance due to 4+ spell ignore, CV exploding 6s on charges, HK 5+ wards against mortals with Gardus (although he's hard to fit), very high mobility and great mid-range damage.
Imagine the Stormcast wins the roll off and goes first. They have a Knight Draconis (KD) general with Arcane tome, master of magic and Scintillating Trail or Thunderous Presence (oh the humanity if he hits the Sentinels with it!). He uses Finest Hour. Your opponent ponders oddly. He self casts Flame Blade, while another wizard casts Lauchon both out of unbind range. It would be nice to have some other spell buffs, but that would be hard to fit into a 1-drop. A priest translocates a unit of 4 stormdrake guard 9" away from the wardens or some other front screen but still within 12" of where the KD will move to with Lauchon. You can add some other things to the party if needed. But the main point is that when the the KD arrives at the end of the Hero Phase he uses wrath of the Draconis to let those stormguard breath all over whatever they can reach for ~8 MWs (ideally something other than the wardens since they want to charge). (Also, Some TOs might have an issue with the timing so make sure you confirm prior to trying, you may need to get a little more creative if so).
So, you now have 5 angry dragons + whatever else you brought knocking at their castle. In the movement phase, the KD should ideally be within 12" from Teclis depending on terrain (~8" if there was a perfect line) and have some room to fit past the screens into either the sentinels or Teclis himself. Try to watch for weird angles of redeploy and cut them off as much as possible but Teclis has a fat base, and the sentinels have so many models it make it hard to get out of danger. If the LRL don't have their 5+ ward and he has Flame Blade, it's within reason that he can solo kill Teclis with a Roar (Thunderous Presence on Sentinels might be higher priority if you can pile-in to Teclis). Now the shooting phase and a second round of Dragon flame to burn ~10MWs of as many sentinels as possible to avoid a difficult Unleash Hell. Hopefully there was some room to land outside of 3" and be ready to charge Teclis with the KD and something else with the Stormdrakes (they have an inate reroll plus the CP reroll if needed). Start with the KD and All-Out-Attack so you are 5x2,2,-3,3 and 4x2,2,-2,2 with exploding 6s (if CV) against a non-all-out-defensed, no-ward Teclis. Average rolls says 22 damage for Celestial Vindicators and 19 damage for Hallowed Knights so you may want to throw a breath weapon his way to make sure. You can add in various long range shooting to finish the job, but this should give an idea on how to do it if you win the roll off or Teclis lets you go first (which a lot would do anyway due to not wanting to worry about double turns).

I played vs teclis but Ymetrica with Avalenor, 2 units of 10 stoneguard +1 of 5 and.... Is an absolute nosense. I managed to win but it was really disencouraging.
But with the Bounty hunters dissapeared, is just impossible to kill ymetrica build, i can only close them.
Anyway, with ur list, if he is able of play well, he can moove better and is harder close him but..... isn't inmortal like the stoneguard. Thanks to the faq i was hitting him with my varanguard with rend -3, but he still save at 3+.... with 3 wounds each and 5+ save xD.
5 of them survived the double attack of my varanguard and managed to get off 2 of them... they are just inmune to normal damage xD.
PD: I like this content a lot, because i can't play vs every single army, for example nobody play Daughters of khaine in my zone. I readed his book, and i have some lights, but I really never played since his renovation, and that new format can help me a lot.
    Thank you!

Hi,I really liked the video. Please more of this, but keep the fun content as well. I love listening to Nathan. One thing about this video: how do you come to the army rating. Sure, it’s made up, but perhaps you can allude to those ratings throughout the video. „Chance to win“ was obvious though, but where is the difference between „how hard is it to make“ and how hard is it to play? Thanks for the great content.

  • @MisterDragon
    @MisterDragon ปีที่แล้ว +1

What I'm hearing is... "Bring automatic dispels if you can."
Any army that can ally Stormcast can bring the one hero with the flask or something that has a bottled dispel.
For me, Host Arcanum, with Tzeentch would help me block either the spell portal or storm of white light. Sure teclis can also choose to cast one undispellable but that means he's casting 3 less spells. I call that a win.
I think reducing that opening magic blast will help quite a bit.
Cus the sentinel fire is pretty much impossible to do things about if you're not a faction with an anti shooting mechanic like Idoneth.
    Is that correct?
This is just a casual player perspective so I may be horribly wrong on this.

    • @TheHonestWargamer
      @TheHonestWargamer  ปีที่แล้ว

Hey this is indeed some good solutions. There are always things to consider like effective range etc but shutting down some spells is a good start.

  • @chrish1645
    @chrish1645 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Awesome video Rob. Besides the obvious comment about there being no plaid, I'd say that the extra things I might want to see would be list variants. You wouldn't have to spend a lot of time on this, but a couple sentences of "Sometimes instead of unit X, you'll see unit Y, or 2x20 for this unit is typical, but 1x30 is also seen as it makes it easier to buff that unit".
It would also be nice to hear a quick rundown on what actual lists might have a shot against it. As more tournament data comes in for the season it'll probably be easier to say "This is a really strong list that takes on almost anyone, but two notable exceptions we've seen take them down in tournaments are X and Y"
Finally I think the video is a great length, and the suggestions I've added might add to the runtime. To mitigate this I don't know if it makes sense to do a video of terms you'll be referencing in this series. That way you don't have to say what the different army and unit archetypes are at the start of each Army Masterclass video.
    Keep up the great work.

I’d argue it’s difficulty to play is lower than 7 tbh. It’s the same plan every single turn and doesn’t require much accuracy in movement because ranges are so great. I’d argue more a 5/10

Hey Rob got a few things to cover. First off its really nice after the first couple years of the army being out that a lrl video isnt overly negative or try to state the army shouldnt exist. There was alot of that going into early 3.0 and its really nice not feeling like the community sees me as a paraiah for wanting to enjoy lrl competetively, means alot.
Second for just critique of the video in general. Overall its a wonderful format really like the unit cards along with the text lets newer folks quickly tell whats what, and how you do show the verbatum rule but dont spend too much time on them to avoid breaking the flow of the conversation (sorry lrl rules are wordy xD). I do agree with a few others in the comments showing some deployments on 1-2 battle plans maybe working with your player expert to show where exactly some units might be instead of generic shapes. It might also be nice to have some quick bulletpoints summarizing the info while your displaying your x/10 ratings of the list and leave it up until your outtro animation to give folks time to absorb it.
All in all awesome work sir look forward to more of these!

This is a great show, Rob! This kind of in-depth gameplay discussion is pretty thin on the ground in the Warhammer TH-cam area.
I'd love these masterclasses to extend to general gameplay theory and practice. Most "how to play" content focuses on the mechanical actions and rules to play the game, but doesn't explain how to assess the situation and decide what to do.

Brilliant format that has the potential to rapidly expand players understanding of the game. Precise and to the point. Helpful to both newer LRL players and those who might play against them. Explains the play in a way that most batreps struggle to. Keeping them to sub 30mins is ideal.
A few suggestions for future Masterclass vids:
•Show a typical deployment and first turn(s) in the style of old WD batreps (using overhead views).
•Slightly expanded counter-play suggestions (eg counter magic dom, hero assassination, and first turn pinning)
•One or two common variations of the archtypical list.
I have played quite a few variations of Castle Teclis, but the 2×20 sentinels is for sure the archetype. 2×10 Stoneguard and Ravanaks was a recent variation that I played against at Cancon.
    So. Many. Mortal. Wounds.
I lost the game turn 1 when I failed to make a 10" charge with 10 fully buffed Chaos Knights (3d6 charge, changing a dice to a 4, rerolled) which would have slaughtered most of the Stoneguard and trapped the LRL castle in their deployment zone.

This was excellent. I feel I got all the core content to this army. Having one for each army would really help beginners engage into AOS by choosing which army they prefer and how to think about building it. If there was an extension to the video, it would be great to see some game play scenarios demonstrated, plus it would be helpful to have more on the magic phase, especially for this army.

Hey Rob, Stormkeep Daniel here, check out our video from a little while ago Stormkeep #9 Tactics and Terminology for our take on roles. Quite a fan of the hammer, anvil, screen, and pinner terminology as it simplifies the basic roles. Would love to chat about terminology and I’m sure my fellow co hosts Paul, Jack, and Mrigank would want to chime in. Great video man, cheers

yes this is a Great 4-1 or 3-2 list. it has too many counters that will shut it down to be a 5-0. if fighting a lizard, or tzeentch, or a certain rat with a surfboard sitting at +4 to deny you. it becomes an uphill battle. 1 drop orruk list goes first and smashes into your castle you. its light on screens. 1 block of wardens and 5 roos looks great untill it isnt. 1 drop KO drops a nice sun into you sure you get a 4+ ignore. but teclis with no buffs gets shot and dies to KO but i can place him so he is protected ok great so they just need to pepper your archers and wardens and watch them run to battle shock because LRL BRavery is among the WORST in the game.
and vs new STD where damn near everything has a 5+ ward vs mortals sometimes even a 4+. and a high armor save. they can easily camp points and weather your storm a 5+ rally does wonders for the attacks you actully get through. that is to say they dont pin with horses or archeon etc etc etc.
so yes LRL are a decent ok army always have been noob stompers extraordinars they will keep bad players and lists down. and these people have the loudest voices of LRL OP PLS NERF OMG OMG OMG. but they rarely go 5-0. always the bridesmaids never the bride. you will see LRL but you wont see them on the top.

back in the days (in warhammer fantasy), this tactic was called "the king on the mountain/hill", because it was mainly a dwarf tactic, with a lot of war machines and shooters, and they needed clean line of sight (you cannot see through allies), so they usually deploy on a hill, and usually you had the Dwarf Lord as general to give 10 bravery to everyone...
    oooh, the good ol' days
i'm trying a CoS list on this principle, mainly with dwarfs

I really dont think this is as strong as people think. This List looses to every Damage Check and Magic heavy List. Because when even just ONE single Spell gets disspelled, your damage is gone. At Range this has an output of less than 20 Wounds a Turn, even when all spells go through. Also you are going to have to be a 4-Drop in this new GHB because of the Sharpshooter Battalion.
Yes, this has very good utility, but good Players who know how to play against it will nullify that too.

Realls cool video. Format is good, fast and covers everything I expected. Maybe an Addition could be a "Newcomer" Score at the end. And maybe a "casual fun" scorring, you said it in this video already that this list is not very "keep/make firends"

Love this video. cant wait for more. Will you do a video on the various types of list builds? like alpha strike, beta strike, etc. And maybe go over the concept of the build with an example. Same thing with the various unit roles? That would help me because then I could have a concept to go for when list building, and I'd only ever heard of like 3 of the list builds you breezed over

Love the video! The stats, maps and measurements were visually appealing and helped me follow along very easily. I also love the fun history lesson, it really meshes with the play style of the list.
I think the biggest criticism I could give right now would be to add time stamps such as 3:12 being the Army Introduction and 14:05 being Overall Strategy.
I think there was a list mistake with the General. In the description it mentions the Cathallar as the general and in the video it says the Lord Regent is the general.
Lastly, I think the command trait is missing on whomever the general is (I would guess the Lord Regent is the general with Master of Magic).
Besides those, you did a great job with the video and I look forward to your future ones!

Great video. Played my first event with my Lumineth 2 weeks ago with a sub par list (whatever i had built/painted). But in three games i played two variants of this list, the major difference beeing they did not include the lord regent but rather 1 extra unit of windchargers and an extra caster. So with 2 units of mobile ranged roo's they had the nessesary board precence to dominate the game. And it is another 20 wounds of fast moving screen that can harass until needed to screen. And they can easily move within 6 to do +1 attack, and when you forget the 6 inches for the charge you get another round of +1 attacks unleash hell.
As for endless spells one list included burning head to be cast through the spell portal along with the other spells.
One major point here tho is that the rune of petrifications does not affect Lumineth Realmlords, so in a Lumineth vs Lumineth it is useless.
It would be intresting if you mention deviations of the list in question, but this might be to research intensive.

i like to Concept. 1 big Information that my just be drifferent from my knowledge and experience: as far as i experienced lumineteh players play onedrop to go first to get the 5+ ward up, take off important pieces, not get behind on points and start dealing damage in general. but overall great video. I am very interested in more

Battle Reports are not a good way to learn the game as a new player. I found this to be an interesting video. It has some high level stuff but you also touch upon the fundamentals. I appreciate how you talk about a power gamer list like this and also reflect on how it's not a good one to take to your buddy's house for a friendly match.
In the case of this list, I think it would be interesting to hear how other armies function similiarly or build similiar lists.
    More content, Rob! Moaaaar.

Things i love: This video/format/fountain of knowledge it brings.
Things I would love to see in future: A brief description on the side that explains in bit more detail what all words mean (like castle, alpha strike, etc)
Things I am afraid of: I hope that we will see more of this, but I would like to see more of battle breakdown, that was fucking amazing, like this one. Given how time is sensitive for all of us, I would hate to get only one amazing thing. I am bit greedy like that.
Things i hate: Lumineth and all other elves.
Keep doing an amazing work, Rob!

love this new format! As a Lumineth players I have just a few things to add. 1st Lord Regent's spell can give D3 units power of hysh. Not 3 units. So it's a little bit swingy. When I play the list you setup I have difficulty with big monster infantry. Things with lots of wounds. Lumineth tends to do chip damage and those big boys can usually stay alive long enough to get in your face and pin you down. Also it's difficult to play vs Tzeench. But a Teclis list is the only thing I was able to have success with vs Seraphon + Slann. Finally, as a general improvement you could focus on the way you pronounce words and articulate your speech. I noticed you seem to try to improve that in this video. Just a little bit of practice again to slow down the speed at wich you speak so it's more understandable. Thanks for all your work.
