Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses hands-on: Techy sunglasses you might actually want to wear

- Meta has almost completely revamped its high-tech sunglasses, now called the Ray-Ban Meta smar glasses, resulting in a slimmer design, improved audio, a new 12-MP camera and even support for live streaming. Onboard storage has also increased to 32GB while new privacy features and a brighter notification LED ensures that anyone nearby will know you’re snapping pics. Meta also redesigned the View app to make features easier to use and find. But the best part is that, thanks to a second frame style (the Headliner) along with a larger range of colors and lens choices, there are now over 150 ways to customize their appearance.
The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses will cost $299 with pre-orders starting today and official sales on 10/17.

If it doesn't scan Power Levels I am not interested.
Edit: holy crap, a month later I found over 1 K upvotes. I had some good laughs checking everyone's replies.
I do think these glasses could have augmented reality and we could add the scanning just for fun lol
Great dbz fan 😂
It does
But unfortunately it still doesn’t go above 9000!
😂
It's over 9000 😅
😂
😢Wow, over 6 minutes and you did not show any photos or videos taken by the glasses. Very helpful.
Lol..what does that tell you? Draw your own conclusions.
😂😂
@@dong6839that’s the point of reviews… don’t be a smart ass
Photos and videos are good. The day they dropped.
This video was released before the actual date of release for these glasses. He wasn't allowed to share quality yet.
Five cameras, didnt you mean microphones?
i could just feel the facepalm in the air after he said that
Yes, but he is dumb
Yes
Sound cameras
He says ray band also so this guy is misinformed
I wish they make a sports version, so that people can take video/pictures while running or biking which a lot of people love to do already.
💯💯💯💯💯💯
Agreed - I'm surprised that these guys don't do a deal with someone like Oakley & Polar/Garmin. Imagine, going for a run/ride and seeing your previous run (on the same route), with an avatar....cannot wait.
@@AndrewDBrown2020 a lot of possibilities for applications like this! I’ve been waiting for GoPro to make a product like this for years but they seem like a company that’s not well managed and don’t do anything to innovate. I could see a Meta/Garmin collaboration to make a sports version of this!

I'm totally getting the Transitions!!
this is an upgrade that actually makes me want to buy it, much better than gen 1
These are going to sell like hot cakes
Why are you commenting the same thing under every Rayban video? Are you a bot?
Trash if you can't download the new tech to Gen 1
The Camera LED will be disabled within 24 hours of their launch. No doubt.
And I see you aren't a bit concerned, this being connected to meta, with the issues of privacy, upgraded social control and mental health that comes with this technology. You are thinking "Duuhr, cool glasses, me record my life". Why am I not surprised?
We have a pair of the original wayfarers with prescription transition lenses. Love them! Videos and photos are surprisingly fantastic quality.
And lenses that come with ray bans are trash anyways
Glass Tech Getting better i guess, good work
Yes I will get a pair for sure
I’ll buy them when the glasses lenses display pictures and things you are doing for you to see
lovign these - hoping technology further develops for the vision impaired
I use the old version , there great , ready for the new one
I’m more excited for the update with the glasses helping with reading signs and such
Five cameras give you clear voice on calls? It really is some new tech!
I was thinking the same thing JP.
5 mics, ok. But, 5 cameras… I didn’t get that part.
I'm glad when they came out with these now there's more competition which means they'll get better as they have I'll hold out until someone comes out with a 4K 30 or 60 version that can record longer than a minute streaming option is nice it'd be nice if this is the future and no more having to carry a camera or anything vlogging would be a cinch
All options still suck
best impulse pre-order ever. very cool and looking forward to further updates
Eh
I impulse bought this after watching Mr.mobile's review and missing a goal footage within seconds of it happening and thinking "the glasses would've been faster to record"
My initial take- camera good enough, style is truly James Bond tech. But the software is overly privacy invading (don't say the same about the glasses- we live in a world of cameras and the light is always on for recording) and very limiting- it unpairs itself often and stops working when you take them off your head and fold them up.
Unless someone makes custom software or this improves. Skip this one. We are so close but still not there yet
Also if you don't listen- get the base lens and add your own polarized in- rayban lenses are complete garbage- don't pay extra
new tech has become fun again
These are actually pretty cool, might buy these to livestream when I tattoo
I might gonna buy this instead of gopro/insta 360 for running and biking. This is great and seamless to be integrated into outdoor activities.
That 1 minute limit might be painful though
^^^
360 has balancing, this doesn't right?
And these don't look to have great stability so videos may be bouncing.
@@AndersonChan I can stream it privately in facebook and save the video later, but yeah would be great to record offline video longer
I think if it functions as an interactive AR screen for day to day info would be more interesting than being able to take pictures i mean it's on your eyes after all
probably next gen i don't think they can do screens that small yet
@@shamicentertainment1262the hell are you talking about. You don't need a screen. AR glasses that just project directly into your eyes have existed for at least half a decade
Those are actually coming out next year in 2024. As far as I can tell it's not a different gen just a whole new line altogether.
How good they will be and specs those things I can't confirm.
Would say from experience 1st gen stuff usually has some tweaks needed so you might be best waiting till 2026-27 and get the second gen.
By this time AI should be better established. Tweaks and upgrades will be implemented. Also there should be at least one more AR/AI competitor. Which will keep the prices somewhat reasonable.
All in all unless you are an earlier adopter and don't mind being the test subject or don't mind buying twice for a small to moderate upgrade than you are still better off getting these if you want a pair of Meta branded smart glasses in the near future.
This looks amazing!
Just saw these glasses earlier today from an Oakley representative. They are sold out everywhere but luckily he gave me his info which he would have me on an email list once they are about to gon back in stock
My main question is: can I record the last 60 seconds, like say a Dashcam. That would be an amazing feature because sometimes crazy stuff happens without you anticipating it.
nigga this is a smart glasses not a security stream camera lmao
The feature would drain the battery pretty quickly, as the glasses would have to record for the whole time.
@@Daemon1995_lmao
If so, you would probably have to jailbreak them, because I don't think the privacy policy would condone such actions. Especially since it's such a big focus on privacy nowadays.
apparently the glasses can be full active for 4 hours for live streaming.@@oliverkorpinen1993
So I want to have Meta seeing exactly what I see. Riiiiiiight.
Thanks very much for the new tech gadget sharing. the functions are pretty awesome. However, the frame design is just too bulky for me. I hope they will improve it over time and make it much slimmer. Are there any phone notifications shown inside the glasses or can we read messages through viewing the glasses?
I think the lenses have no display. These are just sunglasses with headphones, ai assistant and a camera.
I ordered one a week ago, can’t wait to get mine
Loved the first generation - felt like the iPhone 1 to me.
Can’t wait to try these out, the improved camera quality & ability to live stream is MASSIVE. I think it’s exactly what these needed to go more mainstream
😅bullshit
Instagram only though- we aren't there yet.
Hardware is good at least
Gotta give these an instant shade change for a smooth transition to different light levels. Its the issue I had most with the Oakley "Thump"
Transitional lenses bro
@FourPoundTommy then what do I do when I go outside? Put sunglasses over them? That just wont do. I have to have eye protection from the sun.
@@thathaslage transitional lenses get dark in the sun light bro I had em years ago the sun makes them dark wen u go back inside it fades away over time
@FourPoundTommy yes, over time. Too much time. I dont want to wait 8 minutes to see when I come back inside. That was my experience using transition lenses. Walk from sunny sky into any normal or dim lighting and its like wearing sunglasses at night.
@@thathaslage ohhh okay I thought u didn’t know about em yea that part is kinda weird
Since the videos are capped at 60sec does live streaming give you the option to record longer and ability to download it later?
Just wondering if I could add my prescription glasses to this, as it would be highly beneficial for me at that point.
5 *Microphones (not cameras) 1:44
Do they work if not signed into facebook or instagram? Can you use them to make calls? I probably want to wait for at least a basic display capability.
Yes you don't need a Facebook account, just a "Meta" account which doesn't need to be linked to FB or IG account
Does anyone know why they're still not available in the Netherlands?
I know they have built-in speakers. But if I wanted to use my earbuds instead, am I able to do that while live streaming? Or no?
I have been wearing the gen1 glasses for almost a year and half that I can say I love this glass more with time passing by since meta has been consistently updating the firmware and apps to make improve of it. I love the open space music as well felt so much better than wearing an ear buds

Can the glasses be customized for vision impairment?
I assume this is a product geared towards creators and not necessarily mass market because as someone who actively caps their social media use, I have no desire to have a IG/FB camera in my glasses. Agree some sort of HUD or AR capability would be the only things that I’d be interested in
Agreed Idgaf about social media.
The prospect of genuinely useful AR through glasses like this is one of the most interesting new consumer products I’ve seen since the smart phone. VR headsets are clunky and impractical for many scenarios, whereas this could provide incredible AI drive content right to your eyes in seconds. Having the visual of a map with directions on a street in an unfamiliar city and not having to hold a phone in front of you, barely scratches the surface as to the true potential. Imagination is the only real limiter as to how these can be used.
wtf are you on about? these are not AR glasses, they are just glasses with a camera and speakers built in. A bad camera and bad speakers. Literally every modern phone and cheap earbuds are better, these are just for when you don't want to or can't pull out your phone to take a pic
@@flyingtentacle7631 Fair enough, my understanding is they were adding some AR capabilities to this, otherwise it’s a bit of a nothing.
@@Libertas_P77well, these ones will not support any visual AR. Maybe future models, but we are talking about 5 years down the road at least...
@pedasn there are ar glasses out already. Meta just doesnt care cuz they just want your data when u wear this crap

I can see how this will be a cool feature for musician on stage get the interaction with the crowd and musicians on stage.
What about the AR functions
Not yet.
Would be nice to see a standardized bluetooth webcam protocol that apps like discord could take advantage of. Imagine telling your friends "be right back, gotta go take out the trash" and then bringing them along for the experience. Little do they know your trash dump is 20 minutes away and you're walking on foot.
I just got mine in wayfarer style on prescription and transition lenses! I enjoyed the hands free voice command controlling of taking pictures, recording videos and playing music! Really cool gadget! Hey Meta!
can you put another glasses on top of that and they still record let me know im really curious about this i want the clear and the sunglasses but got sunglasses already so if im doing night time the sunglasses wont help so much
these are really cool i think i would get a pair
Can it be RXd though? With the tech throughout, i can imagine inserting prescriptions will be a problem or very limited
yes, you would be able to
But do they still record vertically (instagram format) or can they record horizontal (landscape) as well???
Yes

Nice review sir but wish you would have been more clear about the livestreaming feature such as a video output sample and whether the 60 second video limit applies to livestreaming or not.
Love Meta's product lately, this looks awesome. Need this when i go fishing
They look great for outdoor activities like hiking and stuff
They need to improve the storage capacity to at least 128gb, and allow for at least an hour of video recording at 1080p for these to do well.

Or just using black tape or paint...

This "AI" sucks
I wonder if you can get prescription lenses for them too.
Are the lenses just normal sunglasses? As in don’t show you anything or are the lenses themselves actual screens? Wasn’t very clear in the video unless I missed it
5 cameras or mic?
5 cameras, Big Brother needs to know where you are at all the time. 😅
10 years later and smart glasses still haven't improved on what google glass did. When they can i'll be interested again.
Also tech has kinda leveled off- China makes everything and no one has any real incentive to innovate
Can ppl with big heads or faces wear them and how do they feel on your face are they heavy?
Do they work with videos and other visible features without anything? If they do can it work with apple phones?
Two questions
1) are they water proof?
2) can i put dioptric lenses on them?
Splash proof and you can add lenses.
I always wear my sunglasses while taking a shower or bath 😅
I can't imagine you can, or it'll have to be a very limited rx. You'll also probably have to receive your lenses exclusively from RayBan or Meta, I'd doubt many opticals will touch it, not without a waiver.
I had the first gen, main thing I want is waterproofing.
@@1meen1nope, you can take them to LensCrafters too. It's on the product page.
Ordered. Hope they take the 60 second limit on recording off. I would like to have it record my 20 min ride home on my motorcycle. Not a fan of the silver ring around the lens. I will be blacking that out. Now lets sell lots of these so we can get the augmented reality glasses out there. Having GPS maps pushed to the lens of my glasses would be great for biking. I used google glass when it came out and loved it. Too bad people could not use it responsibly and it made you look like an idiot. Crossing my fingers this catches on.
LOL this isn't AR at all.
Also the batteries power your asking for to do that? Good luck man

developer support? It would be interesting to create some apps for these things that can run custom object detectors. Example being train your own custom object detector for tree classification and then walk through a forest and have it draw bounding boxes with tree classifications.
These are a pretty safe purchase for any1 who already has Raybans and uses Facebook and/or Instagram with any regularity

Bullshit trolling
If they sold them as prescription sunglasses too, I’d might buy one. 😊
You can probably get the lenses change at the ray ban store with your prescription
I just ordered directly through the rayban site and you can make them prescription
You can't change the lenses...ever, however you can order them with your prescription, but if you scratch the lenses or your prescription changes...you're buying new glasses. At least that was the case for the gen 1 glasses, hopefully they changed that on the new version
But is it limited? The original would not let me use stronger prescriptions.
@@James-of-all uhhh.... you can?

Pretty cool! Not getting smart glasses until they have a HUD. And the ones with the chrome rings around the cameras are a terrible idea. Nobody wants to be filmed by a weirdo wearing spy glasses and those are a dead giveaway. Also cracking up that he called them Ray Banned at the beginning and said it had 5 cameras all around. Guessing he meant mics. Dude (and everybody), calm down about new tech and take the time to get the details right.
The dead giveaway when recording is intentional.
That's the whole point, you want it to be a giveaway that there is a camera on the glasses and you'll know when it's recording. Clearly you didn't pay attention to the video
Agree - want text/email/calendar to pop up to the side.
So the lenses of the glasses don't have a screen with apps etc? It's just a camera with video and pictures no feedback to your eye?
Very interesting product can we please get a sport sunglasses fashion
R.I.P dashboard cameras! These Ray-Bans can be used driving and recording your trip and also used for many others things( traveling and in museums or in conferences, when you would like to record someone's speech and don't want to use the phone. I really like the many options you have available with 6 hours battery life. :)
For other reasons you stated. I agree. RIP Dash cams? lol. No Way. Dash cameras are always recording, do not have a recording limit, and can record outside as well as inside in most models, including an attachment for rear view. The better dashcams (like the one I have) can be accessed via LTE. Meaning I can access the camera from anywhere (uses the OBD port for power). Not that its meant to, but this will never replace a dashcam.
60 sec clips wont cut it for dash cams
