No-Input Mixing Board: Black Hole Drone

  • It feels like it's been a little while since I tuned up a bunch of parallel oscillators on the mixing board. I thought that it would be nice to pair these with the Black Hole Symmetry pedal. I played around with routing more feedback into the BHS, but it quickly took over into noise. It's working more like a traditional send/return here, although it's a little more complicated in full due to the way that it routes back into other channels. But still, more feedback isn't always better. There are lots of great ways to integrate pedals with the mixing board that aren't fully looped into the core feedback paths.
The pedal is connected to the mixing board using the control room outputs, which lets me selectively route channels to it using the "solo" buttons on each channel. The noise source on channel 1 is making a really nice pop and crackle due to its extreme EQ settings-it sounds to me sort of like vinyl noise or a campfire once it runs through the aux 2 feedback loop. In order to get a well-tuned bass note on the aux 1 feedback loop, it's actually working as a subharmonic generator for oscillator on channel 2.
If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask in the comments!

Wow! Very cool. I don't understand the artistry and technology on how this is created, but I do appreciate and enjoy the results. As a side note, I am listening this afternoon to an audio version of the War of the Worlds and this provided an eerie background to the chapter of Londoners fleeing the Martian attack. Thanks.

Nice! I never knew you could do such a thing without smoking up the mixer 😂 Very interesting, mate! Well done!

Thanks! It's a surprisingly versatile instrument! Generally speaking, the understanding that I've developed about feedback patching like this is that mixing boards and many other pieces of equipment can handle up to their own maximum levels in feedback without much issue (though I'd still be cautious about anything too precious). The thing you have to watch out for is running that hot signal into some other piece of equipment that isn't able to handle it-especially things like speakers. But if you're careful with your output levels, it's not a problem.

My favorite part was the standout melody, people don't write like this anymore.
