Jamuary 2025: 07 Polymetric Percussion
มุมมอง 1122 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
More multi-voice percussion patching. I wanted to play with some shifting polymeters using different clock divisions and a sequential switch. Wrapping my head around the particulars of the patch was a little bit challenging, so after my first attempt (the time lapse), I ripped everything out and repatched. A little bit scattered today, but some fun sounds were made. Frequency shifters sound goo...
Jamuary 2025: 06 Percussion Sketch
มุมมอง 984 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Time to start pushing outside my comfort zone a little bit. I gave myself the goal of creating three different percussion voices out of the system. The results aren't what I might have come up with if I had planned everything out before I started patching-and that's exactly the point. I'd like to use some of these Jamuary days like quick drawings in a sketchbook. Get stuff onto the sonic canvas...
Jamuary 2025: 05 Noise Drone
มุมมอง 1077 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Trying to move quickly today and just sketch out a complex timbre with some feedback. I sometimes forget that patching can work like drawing a sketch. Make light movements, follow the sound, and don't be precious about the results. The purpose of a sketch is to search. This patch uses a mix of frequency modulation and phase modulation on the Multifilter 2 as a sine oscillator, and then combines...
Jamuary 2025: 04 No-Input Mixing Board Feedback Performance
มุมมอง 2749 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Saturdays will be for no-input mixing board performances this month. My main focus for Jamuary is the modular system, but it won't be at the expense of my favorite instrument. With the mixing board, I'm interested in creating longer continuities of performance. Part of my interest for the mixing board in 2025 is to become more expressive and performative with it. We'll see how it goes. This is ...
Jamuary 2025: 03 Inter-rungler Radio
มุมมอง 11412 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Patching up a Benjolin-like system built around the Nibbler as a sort of rungler. The Interstellar Radio provides the two oscillators for the system, and it feels particularly well suited to this patch given the wide range and easy routing of the rungler control voltage back into the IR. I'm also playing with making the Nibbler slightly weird by modifying one of its bits through a flexible logi...
Jamuary 2025: 02 Noise Shaping
มุมมอง 15714 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I felt like patching up a chaotic noise system using the Interstellar Radio and the Sport Modulator 2 as a dual sample and hold feedback patch. Under an envelope, the absolute intensity of a wall of noise can become a variety of peculiar percussion sounds. By sending different frequency divisions of one of the IR oscillators to the Angle Grinder's grind inputs, there is some interesting harmoni...
Jamuary 2025: 01 Modular Patching
มุมมอง 18416 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
It's time for Jamuary 2025! I'm going to take the opportunity to focus on my modular case and finding the ways that I want to approach it as an instrument/studio sound tool. For 2024, I feel like I was able to use Jamuary to learn a lot about the no-input mixing board, and my intentions are to repeat that process as best as I can for my modular system this year. To start, I just want to explore...
Fragments: 2022 Revisited
มุมมอง 86วันที่ผ่านมา
These are selected fragments from late 2022, some of my earliest recordings with my modular synth from the months before I started sharing videos on my channel. It contains a variety of approaches to sound making, and I thought it would be nice to end the year with a listen back over some moments from this period. I like this idea of capturing little fragments in a curated selection. The pacing...
Minecraft Music Experiments 1

I'm out for the holidays, so I hope you enjoy this little clip from the vault. A small rhythm programmed in Minecraft. Some interesting things happening with unusual clock division using hoppers on the right side (contents are 1 minecart and 1 redstone dust).
No-Input Mixing Board: Memory Textures
มุมมอง 14414 วันที่ผ่านมา
Exploring a long delay (~7 seconds) with high feedback for stacking layers of sound. I love the way that little droplets of sound accumulate into larger textures. I also really love the way that long glissandi echo and repeat themselves over the tape loop-it's a very haunting sort of effect. I'm also playing more with vibrato on the pitch controls. It's definitely another one of those technique...
Modular Explorations: Benjolin/Krell-type Generative Patch
มุมมอง 16321 วันที่ผ่านมา
Somewhere between a Benjolin and a Krell type patch using the Interstellar Radio, Nibbler, and Angle Grinder from Schlappi Engineering with some additional support from the rest of the system. This video was originally shared for a virtual open mic event earlier in the year. The patch is loosely inspired by Eric Schlappi's video on Benjolin and Krell-type generative patches. Mostly, I've been c...
Modular Explorations: Simple Benjolin Noise
มุมมอง 14221 วันที่ผ่านมา
I've been in a noise patch lately. It's got me trying to figure out what I like about noise-what makes good noise (to me), what are the operations to be performed on noise. A year is not enough time to answer these questions, and especially when it comes to making noise in a modular synthesis context. There's still plenty to figure out, and sound is made in the figuring process. I wanted to get...
No-Input Mixing Board: Phase Collisions (Drone)
มุมมอง 13828 วันที่ผ่านมา
One of the most fascinating effects that you can achieve with the mixing board comes from patching up several channels of steady oscillation to near the same frequency. They drift past each other to reinforce or disrupt the total waveform in a unison effect. As you approach the limits of the mixing board, these shifting waveforms become particularly beautiful, especially with some support from ...
No-Input Mixing Board: Heavy Noise Patch
มุมมอง 185หลายเดือนก่อน
Thinking about more complex routing for the basic noise channel patch on the mixing board. By using a y-cable mult, I can copy the noise over to an adjacent channel. From there, cross-patching additional channels of noise (direct out to adjacent channel's input) produces different EQs and distortion qualities for each channel. The mixing board is very interesting as the routing center for more ...

Wonderful! So much more engaging than a drum machine.
There's always trade-offs, but I think it's definitely my preferred way to work.
Had me worried for a minute, thought there was a new ever smaller Monos that I needed to pick up. 😀
The piccolo monos! 😄
That Koszalin sounds so good! Nice metallic beat.
Thank you! I'm still learning all that it can do, but even from the start it does really interesting stuff. I'm looking forward to spending more time with it going forward!
again, interesting patching here + cool sounds!
great idea to keep pushing and trying new stuff. I have a (very long) running project of building my own eurorack, i have built 2 modules over 3 years and dont even have a full voice yet. this video has inspired me to buy a few modules and really get this project moving. Thanks friend!
That's great! Hope you have a lot of fun with it. 😁
AG is an awesome sound processor, particularly on percussions. Noisy beat, I like it.
It continues to amaze me. A really exciting module to use.
Ich mag die Stelle mit der Oboe und der Solistin. Daumen sind Oben, und danke für das Verhalten.
Very good. Reminds me of Trent Reznor's Swarmatron work on the Social Network soundtrack.
I'll have to give that a listen. Thanks!
Your Jamuary wins everything!😮
Thanks! I'm feeling good about this one 😄
a beautiful patch!
Thank you! It's definitely a style of patching that I'm drawn to.
I like noise, rungler, and small case performance. What's not to like here? Great patch ✨
Thank you! Some of my favorite things too 😁
Interesting patch! Happy jamuary ;)
Thanks! You too!
Make some noise! Happy jamuary!
Happy jamuary! The new year needs to get a little raucous! 😁
Beautiful patch as usual, I'm enjoying the daily treat. I wonder if it would be interesting to use Nibbler as the clock divider here, and modulate it in some way...
The Nibbler could definitely do a lot of interesting things here. Perhaps the math is just escaping me, but I can't think of a way to get the odd number clock divisions for /5 and /7 with the Nibbler, which I wanted for the particular subharmonic relationships to the main pitch of the oscillator in this patch. But the Nibbler is great, especially with some modulation. It's definitely going to be part of tomorrow's patch 😁
It's like opening a bag of sweets and sugar candy spilling out!
🍬 ✨
Lovely sounds! Have a nice jamuary!
Thanks. You too!
I’ve been checking out your vids for a bit now and I’m always impressed with the complex sounds you get! Very nice man really enjoyed that
I appreciate that, thank you! Looking forward to a new year with all sorts of new and interesting sounds! 😁
This is really great ❤
Thanks! Looking forward to a new year of fun, weird sounds! 😁
That’s the good stuff
Thanks!
Some really cool fragments, and I liked a lot the visualisation.
Thanks! I'm really happy with the visualizations too. I'm interested in documenting less immediate/improvised work on my channel in the future, and I think the spectrograms will be a useful tool for doing that.
I wanna put a huge beat on this and start rapping. Haha!
Wut..? This is cool. Can I try it on Bedrock?
Thanks! I don't play on Bedrock, so idk if there are any timing/functionality differences specifically. But the ideas should translate the same, and I would expect it to work almost identically. Let us know what you find! 😁
The most compelling music I've heard come from noteblocks. A few days ago I tried to get some weird results with Minecraft's sound engine, and found something interesting. The emerald block noteblock sound is a square wave, and with multiple playing and one just a tick behind, you can get some weird phase cancellation.
That sounds really interesting. I've been thinking there's good rhythm stuff to play with in minecraft's noteblock systems, but I didn't think there was much to be done with the sound itself. That's a great tip for future exploration!
Love this! Wonderful palette of varied sounds and rhythms
Thank you! I'm looking forward to exploring this more in the new year!
Beautiful! How are you triggering short plucky notes like that?
The plucks are created using the mute buttons on the mixing board channels. Bring the volume up while muted, and then unmute for a sharp attack. The speed at which you bring the fader back down will control the decay. It's a technique that I picked up from watching Hainbach. I believe he learned it from the folks at Willem Twee Studios.
This was an amazing performance. Impressive.
Thank you! I'm quite intrigued with the possibilities of these long, high-feedback delays for developing a performance. It's a neat way to work.
@@kilo_llama Seeing your work with delays makes me think about using effects again. I don't use them because it can be difficult with dense material (feedback and drone). It is a reminder that working with space and silence can be a good thing. Patience.
I really enjoyed this, thanks!!
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for listening!
Great patch!
Thanks!
love the benjolin so much,,, good to see also other one have it in a little extra case 😅 it stands for its own… thanks to rob hordijk! 😢
Benjolin Noise is still the best noise :)
Agreed. I think it makes an excellent case for the idea that complexity is more interesting than randomness.
Just been doing exactly this using live coding on Tidalcycles ..playing with 528 Hz
Sounds like fun!
Sounds little bit like didgeridoo
For sure. The slow modulation from the interference patterns plus the formant-like resonances are very vocal. You might say that the mixing board begins to breathe with a patch like this.
Very merzbow, lovely
Thank you! How to cover as much merzbow sound as possible with just the mixing board is a big motivating question for how I've been exploring the instrument.
You might find the benjolin as a nice companion to the mixer, even before using the oscillators, the rungler and filter could do a lot :)
I bet it would sound great! There are a lot of modular building blocks that could complement the mixing board for feedback.
love the first one a lot
Thank you!
Love that simple mantra at the end. The point is to make sounds AND preform. The shaping of sounds is more important than the sound it self. Getting bogged down isn’t doing anything for anyone.
Yes! I hope to keep this idea front of my mind as I continue making music.
If you board your pedals, then plural pedals becomes singular board. Kinda. Haha.
That would definitely simplify things. And make things more complex! 😆
how you run your drums through the hikari? as it doesnt have an input thank u :)
This is the "Monos CV" version of the device, which has a modular-level audio input on the top, as well as cv control for filter cutoff and noise rate. I'm using a preamp offscreen (Ears) to boost the Volca up to modular level.
My favorite part was the standout melody, people don't write like this anymore.
Thanks for listening!
@@kilo_llama I think you know I was kidding
Damn dial up still won’t connect
😄 modem might have done a bit too much modulating!
Wow! Very cool. I don't understand the artistry and technology on how this is created, but I do appreciate and enjoy the results. As a side note, I am listening this afternoon to an audio version of the War of the Worlds and this provided an eerie background to the chapter of Londoners fleeing the Martian attack. Thanks.
That sounds like a great afternoon. Thanks for listening!
Nice! I never knew you could do such a thing without smoking up the mixer 😂 Very interesting, mate! Well done!
Thanks! It's a surprisingly versatile instrument! Generally speaking, the understanding that I've developed about feedback patching like this is that mixing boards and many other pieces of equipment can handle up to their own maximum levels in feedback without much issue (though I'd still be cautious about anything too precious). The thing you have to watch out for is running that hot signal into some other piece of equipment that isn't able to handle it-especially things like speakers. But if you're careful with your output levels, it's not a problem.
I really appreciate and congratulate you on what you've accomplished with the NIMB. You've really elevated it, at least for me, from experimental sound making to instrumental practice with thoughtfully developed techniques. I still enjoy the chaotic, mysterious nature of feedback, but knowing how to control certain aspects of the sound generation only enhances the experience. Thank you for sharing your journey and how you have learned to play this fascinating instrument!
Thank you! It makes me very happy to read that 😁
from one crisis to another🙂
I often like to think of it like a little battered craft on the ocean. Thanks for listening!
Very nice and rather surprising but well incorporated shift in tempo and structure when the winding down phase starts at 01:30. Great piece of music!
very inspiring case and patch
Thanks! I'm having a lot of fun with it.
Some nice Twin Peaks vibes in there!
Love it!
Great hearing about your experiences and ideas here! Can I ask what you used to make those spectrograms? I love the aesthetic of those!
Thank you! I use Sonic Visualizer. www.sonicvisualiser.org/ I started with the "Print" preset, but it took a good bit of time just fiddling with parameters from there to get something that I liked.
Thanks for this. I like the sharing of your thoughts on direction as an artist as this is an area I struggle with the most. Imposter syndrome!
I'm glad it's helpful! For me, I find it helpful to just take small steps and focus on consistency and direction. I don't know exactly where I'm heading with this project, but I trust that taking care of the little things (and staying open to listening) will take me somewhere that I like.
This vlog type experience has been extraordinary helpful. Please keep posting your thoughts and creative process as it unfolds.
Thank you. I'm glad to hear it's helpful for people beyond me 😁.
