    One of Tom Hanks best films and the fact Carrie Fisher is in it along with Corey Feldman makes it a smorgasbord of a movie 🍿

    I'm sorry, Gary. The zoom in and out with Tom Hanks' screaming lasting so long was WAY hilarious. It's one of my favourite parts.

      I agree. Tom Hanks didn't "miss his cue" when he continued screaming long after Art had stopped, that was intentional for comedic effect. Some people just don't get the humor of this movie.

    This is one of my favorite movies. It brings back so many memories. I find it horribly underrated and incredibly quotable. It's a shame that it wasn't a box office success (and the critics decimated it), but over the years, it has garnered a cult following. It's not "laugh out loud" hilarious, but it's filled with so many subtle idiosyncrasies and nuances. For me anyway, Bruce Dern stole the show.
    "Hey, Pinocchio...where do you think you're going" (slips in dog shit).
    Funny stuff.
    Thanks for reviewing it guys. I hope many more people will discover this film.

      atd8vii Yaaaaassss! Exactly...little stuff like that. My dad and I watched The Burbs when it was first released on VHS and to this day...I shit you not...we make comments about that scene EVERY time we're in someone's house who has wallpaper that's curled up on the wall. We make comments about how we were tempted to do it...but refrained. Or...if a desert is needed for a get together (specifically brownies) we make comments like: "I hope we don't drop the goddamn brownies". Lol. This movie has given us such joy. Thanks for the comment. In regard to idiosyncratic humor, you know exactly what I mean. That's so refreshing.

      To everybody in this thread!... You should also check out The Money Pit if you don't know it. Also Tom Hanks and very similar, sometimes subtle, humor that somehow gets funnier with each watch.

    Even as a jaded adult, I still LOVE this film. Most of the humor still works perfectly, the performances are great and funny, the backlot location is great, as is the goofy suspense and crazy scenarios.
    As for the ending, well I like how it ends, because while the original ending might have been more clever, it's more of a downer, and seeing how this was the late 80's, it made sense for the studio to go with the ending we have.
    After all, the message from Hanks at the end is still important, about how we shouldn't just jump to conclusions about people, but then we get the finale which shows that some suspicions can actually be there for a reason and not always be unfounded. Remember, Ray did see the Klopecks digging holes in their backyard during a rain storm, and the three of them saw the guy drive a trash bag down the driveway and then smash it with a stick into the trash can. Those things alone are weird enough to suspect something nefarious is going on lol.

    19:28 "Brother Theodore" was the stage-name of german actor Theodor Gottlieb, who was an interesting person. His parents were publishers and good friends with Albert Einstein. He was jewish and the only survivor of camp Dachau, where his whole family was killed by the Nazis. Finally he could escape to the US with the help of Albert Einstein. He also provided the voice of Ruhk in "The Last Unicorn".

    This is one of my all time favorite movies. A family favorite actually. I've probably seen it over 100 times lol. Absolute Classic.
    Gary, I think you're really missing alot about this movie. It's much more self aware than you think. I think it's making fun of itself in many scenes and is also a satire of horror movies. I wouldn't call this a horror movie at all. It's a comedy/satire with horror elements. I think you may change your mind about it after repeat viewings. There's so much to appreciate here.
    And they didn't call the police because they are tired, bored, immature middle aged suburbanites lol. This is not meant to be a serious film lol

    Loved the movie. Has great nostalgia for me. The funny thing is that although the film is very cartoony and spoofy, it scared the hell out of me as a kid. So many scenes became imbedded in my mind and you have to understand that after I saw it on tv the movie seemed to vanish completely. I could not find it in any of my vocal stores so it was several years before I saw it again but so much was ingrained in my mind. Even the opening titles. I love the twist in the movie. I understand why many people don't, but for me, the twist isn't really about the culprit it's about the victims

    The things being critiqued (the laugh scene with the femur for instance) are the most hysterical. This movie is and will always remain the bomb for me. I can re-watch it over and over and still laugh my ass off. The scene where Ray is testing the electricity on the fence - too freaking funny.

I looked up that guy Brother Theodore about 10 years ago and found out he was an hysterically funny comedian/actor. He made several insanely and bizarrely hilarious appearances on Letterman

  • @RodZombie

    I absolutely adore and love this movie! Have seen it so many times over the years. The very first time I saw it I remember feeling sorry for the Klopeks after their house is destroyed. But then of course didn't after finding out the truth. For me that means the switch at the end worked because I too was convinced like Ray that they weren't killers, before finding out the truth. So I'm with Iain on how he feels about the ending. And I love that Art is more concerned about his wife returning home than the fact his house is on fire! Gremlins is great but I would have to say that I think The Burbs is Joe Dante's best film. It's over the top, it's bizarre, weird, and zany. With many Looney Tunes kind of moments too. But that's why I love it :D

  • @mrg3241
    @mrg3241 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    There's nothing quite like a good Joe Dante movie to evoke 80's film nostalgia. The Howling, Explorers, Inner Space, Gremlins, The Burbs. I'm glad you showed the part where Tom Hanks shuffles down the stairs at the end, because I always wanted to know how he did that. I'd try it myself, but I'm afraid of injuring my back.

    I loved this movie when I was a kid and wanted to live in that neighborhood. Watched it about a year ago and do think they dropped the ball in the end. Hanks speech and delivery is brilliant and the Klopeks being real killers does erase the message. I understand the need for the madcap closure but I wish it would have been revealed there was a killer in the neighborhood but it was someone they hadn't suspected. They could have dropped a few hints no one picked up on and it could have maybe been walter or one of the wives.

    • @marklombard9360
      @marklombard9360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fan edit of a 4yr old review of a 30 year old movie cause I'm bored::: love your idea of Hanks being fired so keep that.. Now imagine Hanks lying broken and defeated in the ambulance. Carrie Fisher comes in as she does to stroke his hair and comfort him. Instead of Dr Klopek revealing his deeds it is Fisher lovingly revealing, now Hanks finnaly understands her. She's been cooped up in her suburban life slowly going insane for years watching her husband escape and go to work. It's her who cracked and murdered walter, as she jabs one of Klopeks stolen syringes into Hanks arm she explains how much she hates him and this life he's put her in. Hanks and her can have the madcap struggle to stop her from injecting with possibly one of the Klopeks coming to the rescue with the another neighbor.
      Arguably not a better ending but at least it's on message and would be a bit surprising. Though we would miss out on the best part of the sequence which is the Bruce Dern slide tackling Hans.

    Carrie Fisher and Bruce Dern hit their comedic marks perfectly. Disagree with your take. Also, this husband-wife take is very much suburban America in the 80s-90s.

    It's interesting that Neighbours with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi was mentioned, as well as the Blues Brothers, Henry Gibson and Carrie Fisher were both in the Blues Brothers!

    I really liked this movie. A lot. A very nostalgic and wholesome feel for some reason.

    Felt the same way about Rear Window. Good film but it doesn't end when it should and ends up saying a distorted message.

    I wasn't alive when this movie cane out but recently got into a retro movie mood and this is definitely near the top of my top ten list of all time favorite movies. I'm trying to find others exactly like it but they all fall short and don't have the same kind of wacky funny psychological horror vibe that The Burbs has.

      I haven't found one either, but Tremors is my second favorite after The Burbs. And you could try Matinee, another Joe Dante movie that gets a lot of praise, although it didn't do it for me like The Burbs, maybe because I first saw it when I was already an adult.

    22:50 . . . I don’t know if I ever took it as sneezing, I always assumed it was just a cringing reaction to the texture and flavor of what he ate, then turned into gagging that he tried to mask as something else, ultimately so he could spit it out into the paper.

    I can recite this movie nearly word for word I've watched it so many times. Absolutely have loved it since childhood. As silly as it is, it has to be in my top 10 movies (maybe as a tie with the old Jim Carrey movie "Once Bitten"😜)🖤🖤🖤
