These animals honestly made Subnautica (apart from the reapers and peepers) for me. I can't be the only one that was so terrified of them to start! But then I learnt from a friend that if you can hear a Reefback you are somewhere safe, that always stuck with me while playing, they really are the gentle giants! Awesome video as always Aletho
There's just something about them, majestic, slow and alien, just what subnauticas world needed to complete it's atmosphere! Good to hear from you Nova :)
I actually made my home base in the grassy plateau right as the floor dips down into the mushroom forest specifically because their vocalizations put me at ease. I always made my bedroom in an Observatory so that when I go to sleep and wake up, I would see them overhead swimming.
@@iAletho You summed it up perfectly! It completes the atmosphere, a bit of absolute horror suspense and calmness. So glad you are making these creature factfiles now, their designs need this kind of appreciation!
I had the opposite approach unless it attacked it was friend. I took this approach even after the reaper ghost leviathan and sea dragon encounters and survived them all
I love reefbacks because of the atmosphere they provide after a long time spent in the lava zone or lost river, and seeing their glow in the distance is an amazing feeling. The barnacles are really useful early game for some quick silver and copper as well, and everyone’s first reaction to them is priceless. One thing you missed that a lot of people aren’t aware of is that reefbacks respond to the cyclops horn, so you can have a conversation with reefbacks by honking.
Thats actually really cool, I didn't know that one! It's strange how something so alien can be so comforting 😂 thanks for watching as always Soapfaces! :)
Fun little think to note is that at one point the idea of allowing players to build bases on them was a thing but like the ability to mold the terrain the idea was scrapped because it was to resource intensive
Found a reefback who had its back above water today which was neat I also have a base in the underwater islands so hearing reefbacks while watchin my crabsquids in containment is very relaxing Love these big guys

Un-expected download! Oh wow, i didn't know some of those! i never saw them going low on the ground. Also i remember seeing like 7 reefbacks while i was going to the sparse reef from my base near the mushroom forest at the West of the crater, it was awesome.
Your videos are really nice to listen to. I was playing minecraft (pixelmon mod) and mining for water shards and diamonds for like, what, 3 hours? and all I've heard is u talking about subnautica for those 3 hours. 10/10, it's currently 2am and I am vibing wholeheartedly
i wish you'd mentioned that since the corals on top and the foliage is soft which the reef leviathan could reasonably remove via scratching, it's likely that they are in a mutualistic relationship where the roots in the cell reinforce its structure
The reefback reminds me of a creature from this digital graphic novel game called south scrimsnav. There was a creature called a brillo whale which would allow various plants and animals to attach themselves to it to form a coat of armor of sorts. These whales would form ecosystems of their own with smaller creatures living around them. They actually need to form these coats to protect from predators and infection or disease. I wouldn’t be surprised of the reefback was in a similar boat possibly needing these gardens on there back’s to protect from stuff like disease and infection as not a single adult is infected by the alien bacteria through the whole game. Also it’s fun to think the guy who designed the brillo whale might’ve took a bit of inspiration from the reef back.
1:43 maybe the spots eject a scent to lure in microorganisms. It’s possible it may just prefer creatures of microscopic size over even holefish, like how glow whales are massive predators who eat entire shoals of fish in one gulp, but refuses to eat sea monkeys or anything larger. 2:42 another feature the glow whale has, this one was literally stolen from the reefback. Wild ones will let you get close to their eye for studying, both you and the whale doing the research. They also let you ride them, hense the stolen feature. This suggests an interest in Robin as she’s the only human that gets close outside of a prawn suit. 3:20 you can actually still find reefback eggs, believe it or not! You can find the same model as spade fish eggs in small caves, and find the ones that hatch into reefbacks in the debug console. I’ve found no other reference to reefback eggs in game.
I found a Reefback leviathan egg in the grassy plateaus next to the jelly shroom entrance beside A wreck! I did not use game commands I swear I hadn’t use game commands to spawn eggs in this game or save file!
Oh man, another awsome video from my favorite biology teacher. I really like that you also do the passive leviathans. I hope you do a video about the ventgarden. Becouse I think its the most interesting passive leviathan. Looking forward to your next videos.
After days of waiting you finally made a video about Reefbacks. Altough the video was 4 minutes long it was really good! Good job! Btw are you also going to make a video about non-leviathan creatures?
A theory presented for why young reefbacks are affected by Kharaa and adults are not seems pretty solid. There is a theory that all leviathans stomach acids contain a similar enzyme to Enzyme 42. The younger reefback leviathans wouldn't have a strong version of this and thus aren't affected by Kharaa.
I know this is unrelated, but why does the reefback look like the Searchlight from pressure like think of it 1 they have tentacles at the back 2 they both have extremely armored shells on the top of their bodies 3 they both have a similar body structure it wouldn’t be a to stretch to say that they could be related, but I know that the Subnautica universe and the pressure universe are in fact very very very unrelated but it would be a cool concept for a version of the respect that to do damage to the player without just straight up, ramming into them like a giant mouth under their bodies that would be used to eat larger pray as well as using their siphons to eat plankton and microorganisms I could just imagine how cool it would be to see a reefback in pressure like you would be tricked. I’m thinking that it is a searchlight, but in reality, it’s just creature that is distantly related to the Searchlight would be a cool concept though
Theres a theory floating around that the Reefback Leviathan is a very distant relative of the Sea Emperor. This can be seen in the Reefbacks size, rear tentacles, adult resistance to Kharaa, filter-feeding, and the two large appendages on the bottom (most likely an evolutionary leftover in this stage, similar to the human tailbone)
I remember my first encounter with Reefbacks. I had watched Jacksepticeye's videos so I knew about them and I was so happy when I first found one. That was until something started hurting me. After looking around I saw a Tiger Plant shooting at me. That was an interesting first encounter.
Yknow the adult reefbacks not having khara could be a developer oversight but lets pretend it is some cool biology lore for them, also great video dude
I actually had this in the original script but I cut it out, imo I think its probably something the developers forgot as otherwise the Architects would have been studying the Reefbacks pretty closely, but there doesn't seem to be much evidence to support that idea in game!
I've seen a theory that Reefbacks are a very distant relative of the Sea Emperor, which explains its size, tentacles, mandible-like appendages on the bottom of their body, and their immunity to Kharaa

Yea they would’ve been so cool if they were massive
*furiously scribbles notes* write that down, write that down!
They are not actually that small, it’s just the FOV of Subnautica that makes everything seem way smaller than they actually are.
@@TacticaLLR small compared to everything else is what i mean, the reaper, the 2nd smallest levithan is 30 meters longer than it
