Did you know the Sea Dragon was actually supposed to be much bigger than it is today? A bug in the game made the Sea Dragon the size it is today, which was actually much smaller than originally intended. By the time they went back to fix it nobody could remember the original size, so it ended up staying the incorrect size forever!
@Chanerian Imo the sea dragon does not serve the purpouse of causing fear, its more of a readblock being probably the deadliest fish you can possibly encounter in this game. While the reaper will scare you and make you more careful in its territory, the sea dragons whole scary factor comes from the amount of time u spent getting a max upgraded cyclops and seamoth which could get annihilated in less than a minute if ur not careful.
Bigger? I don’t think the game needs a bigger sea dragon, if their prey is supposed to be the reapers, it would be much more reasonable to assume that it is only about the size of two reapers, I can’t imagine a bigger creature being able to get out of the lava zone with a bigger size, plus, we already have the emperor, so making the dragon bigger makes the emperor anticlimactic.
It wasn't actually a bug that shrunk the size, the original Sea Dragon model size caused it to constantly clip through walls and get stuck, so they had to reduce the size for it to actually move in the game.
Although it can no longer be found within the game, the lore says there is a tunnel from the inactive lava zone into the crash zone, which was buried by the aurora. So they had enough to eat, but where then sealed by the crash landing
@@iAletho It was called the Hellhole. It was a massive hole at the front of the Aurora that lead straight to the Lava Zone and was said to be how the Sea Dragon's made it to the surface. It was removed, I'm guessing for gameplay reasons as it made getting to the lava zone quite easy, so I'm not sure if it is still canon.
I get the impression that the Precursor race were rather arrogant about their highly advanced technology, and didn't expect any mere animal on this planet to pose a threat to them.

I think they did know the dangers the leviathans could pose but just underestimated the sheer determination. Most egg laying animals in nature when their egg is take make an attempt to retrieve it, but not go as far as to be in danger themselves to the point of possible death. But the Sea Dragon is clearly didn’t show that behavior with this motherly individual, going as far as to sustain fatal damage to try and retrieve her egg. I think they just miscalculated the behavior patterns of Sea Dragon mothers.
That. There is also a larger story about the architects general lack of respect for the flaura on planet. They had some opportunities to find the cure earlier had they treated the creatures better - especially the Sea Emporer.

There used to be a "Hell Hole" nearby the other side of the Aurora in early builds (or possibly under the Aurora in today's build.) This was a gigantic cavern going straight down to the lava zone, supporting the theory of sea dragons coming to surface to grab themselves Reaper Snacks. Though good idea :D
I think this is the leviathan with the best build up. I remember going to the lavazone first time, and hearing godzilla type of scream. Then i got to my prawn suit. And saw a reaper skeleton. I tried to scan it, untill i saw fireballs bearly missing me. I swam to my prawn, and i saw him. crocodile kraken love baby, witch has learned to spit out fire, and i accually screamed like a youtuber.
Really? I think he's a complete fail. Ridiculous look, lazy sound design and a stupid concept for a leviathan. His pathfinding is the worst of all leviathan as it glitch trough the map all the time. And truly, being chewed up by what look like a dog's plastic toy is kinda funny, which isn't the desried outcome I guess
@@jhtrq1465 he has a pretty good design. if there was something I would fix, I would fix the sound design, pathfinding, and maybe make it look darker. atleast the sea dragon has an explanation to why they are alive with such a small food source, and why they can shoot fireballs(unlike a certain cave dwelling leviathan in below zero which has no explanation at all to how they survive on rockpunchers and fish)

The displacement is not because the amount of water it provokes, it's an effect that they forgot to remove because sea dragon used to have two animations, the throwing (this effect we're talking about) & seamoth swallowing death scene both were erased because later they planned on not letting the seamoth descend this far to the lava zone, i can remember a mod which was able to activate again one of these but i forgot the name sorry .
Fun fact: I have witnessed a Ghost and Dragon fight each other. That was NOT a situation I appreciated being in the middle of. I'd done my normal impatient sprint to the thermal facility after leaving my vehicle by the big crater near the southern most entrance. 99% of the time this goes off with a hitch and I get everything I went down there for in one go..... however... this one day I hadn't actually heard the sea dragon chase me all the way to the vertical shaft out of the inactive lava zone. So, I kinda shat myself when the ghost came straight at me only for fireballs to go whizzing past me. Managed to plaster myself to a wall and get back to the safety of my vehicle, watched for 30 seconds and left them to duke it out. I was not even considered a target at that point lol

You can't really blame the sea dragons for trying to destroy the cyclops because if I was a 20 ton giant sea lizard and saw what looks to me like a big white fish coming down to the lava zone I would probably also try to eat it. When you think about it the sea dragon doesn't know it's made of pure metal and since trying to get to a reaper is quite hard having one come down to you is quite convenient. My point is it's not their fault for trying to get a nibble of you, they're just hungry.
Those things are probably thousands of tons. The largest aquatic animals on Earth are ~20-30 meters long and over a hundred tons, so due to the square-cube law a 112 meter sea dragon would probably weigh dozens of times that.
The dragon doesn't just straight up kill them, they're far too fast to be caught by a dragon conventionally. The dragon chases them into the lava zone where they are boiled alive and sucked clean of all the meat on their bones

In as much as it's a reaper leviathan killer, the sea dragon was terrifying enough, but not as terrifying as the reaper. Plus I found it easy to dodge it without being attacked too much.
@@iAletho Yeah. At that point you probably have a really beefed up prawn suit which basically removes the feeling of fear completely (we didn't get training and have the feeling of immeasurable power)

If it makes a direct hit with it’s Molten Rock attack instead of the fireballs, it will do a whopping 73% to the Prawn Suit. Have confirmed multiple times.
An earlier comment on this video pointed out that the aurora covers a direct tunnel to the inactive lava zone which the sea dragon’s used to hunt reapers, does that mean that in a few hundred years the sea dragons will go extinct or is it possible that they’ll migrate to the crater?
I remember a Sea Dragon pushed my prawn suit into the alien facility in the lava lake, breaking immersion and forcing me to use cheats to clip back out while having to swim all the way back to the surface to build a new prawn suit.
same thing happened to me on switch, before console commands were removed a reaper glitched my prawn into the ground in safe shallows. I tried to teleport to it but it sent me to the bottom of the map and spoiled the sea dragon for me before I found the inactive lava zone. (I think the glitch was patched but when anything takes damage in sub 1 it starts going to the center of the map (shallows)and will stay there until you kill it.
I have a story: while high on the pride that I got after killing 3 ghost leviathans in a row I when down the shaft into one of the zones (idk which one) thats when i found a sea dragon behind me my cyclops covered in lava larve and all the lockers i had in my cyclops just gone idk how they did that but it was a really good reason go go back to base
I remember always being r e a l l y scared of the ghost leviathan, then one day, i thought "fuck this sonovabitch" and just ran at it in my prawn suit and beat the crap out of it, it ended up running away like a pussy and every time I see it, I leeroy genkins it until it runs away, eventually when I got to the lava zone I applied this to the sea dragon, never was really scared of em.. not the reaper thought... that bastard is still terrifying, something about it stickin its face in your face and bone chillingly screaming at you while shaking you about is just horrorifying.
My friend told me that one of his pets, I think it was some giant black eel monster. Said that He was the apex Leviathan, but what would I know since 4546B is waaaay to hot for me and I would melt from just touching the water
Actually once I played subnautica and I just witnessed one of the most epic clashes ever a reaper Leviathan versus a ghost Leviathan so here's how it began I just started and I did some random stuff getting the materials of course I encountered it encountered the reaper Leviathan and I died after that I did everything again for that I made a base and then I decided to go to the the ghost leviathans area but I did not know that there was a reaper following me so when I arrived there I will still driving and I was horrifying to see a ghost Leviathan I was running away but then the clash of the Titans began and the reaper and the ghost Leviathan crashed and it's kind of cool it like well the one winner actually was reaper Leviathan pretty cool right
The sea dragon can even hurt you accidentally. 😅 I'd parked my cyclops beside the primary containment facility, already turned off and effectively invisible, when the sea dragon bumbled over. He bumped into my cyclops, which knocked it against the building, dealing 50% damage all told. Then, of course, as soon as I got out to fix it, he spotted me and started shooting fire balls, which thankfully didn’t hit the cyclops and damage it further. Scared the crap out of me, though!
I feel like they should add more leviathans in the next game, not too much but much more than just 3 (You can count 4 if you include in Sea Emperor, but I just feel like she should not be included)
there are 3 aggressive leviathans: reaper, ghost and sea dragon. and there are 3 passive/defensive leviathans: reefback, sea treader and sea emperor, so there are 6 leviathans
Is the inactive lava zone optional for completing the game? Cuz I really thought there was only one Sea Dragon Lev left. maybe I only ever saw two and conflated them as the same dude? idk
Note to anyone that hasnt run into this themselves; If a Sea Dragon is facing directly at you and clearly has it's mouth closed while staring at you *RUN* *Because it's going to shoot a fireball at you that will oneshot a prawn suit and you with it, and severely damage your Cyclops* I learned this the hard way when mining for Kyanite while being mildly annoyed by the Sea Dragon above me
they weren't really a big threat in my playthrough. one of them just looked at me and followed me and the other pushed me in the direction I meant to go

It used to also be able to swallow seamoths whole, but they realised the interaction was kinda pointless so they removed it

After doing multiple studies on these creatures by going into the lava areas, I found out that they can also eat crabsquids and etc.

An earlier comment on this video pointed out that the aurora covers a direct tunnel to the inactive lava zone which the sea dragon’s used to hunt reapers, does that mean that in a few hundred years the sea dragons will go extinct or is it possible that they’ll migrate to the crater?

I remember a Sea Dragon pushed my prawn suit into the alien facility in the lava lake, breaking immersion and forcing me to use cheats to clip back out while having to swim all the way back to the surface to build a new prawn suit.
same thing happened to me on switch, before console commands were removed a reaper glitched my prawn into the ground in safe shallows. I tried to teleport to it but it sent me to the bottom of the map and spoiled the sea dragon for me before I found the inactive lava zone. (I think the glitch was patched but when anything takes damage in sub 1 it starts going to the center of the map (shallows)and will stay there until you kill it.
It may be the apex predator, but nothing can survive a surprise colonoscopy from a Prawn Suit.
I have a story: while high on the pride that I got after killing 3 ghost leviathans in a row I when down the shaft into one of the zones (idk which one) thats when i found a sea dragon behind me my cyclops covered in lava larve and all the lockers i had in my cyclops just gone idk how they did that but it was a really good reason go go back to base

There is a crater in the lava zone that looks a lot like a nest. I am willing to bet that is where sea dragons laid their eggs

I remember always being r e a l l y scared of the ghost leviathan, then one day, i thought "fuck this sonovabitch" and just ran at it in my prawn suit and beat the crap out of it, it ended up running away like a pussy and every time I see it, I leeroy genkins it until it runs away, eventually when I got to the lava zone I applied this to the sea dragon, never was really scared of em.. not the reaper thought... that bastard is still terrifying, something about it stickin its face in your face and bone chillingly screaming at you while shaking you about is just horrorifying.

Actually once I played subnautica and I just witnessed one of the most epic clashes ever a reaper Leviathan versus a ghost Leviathan so here's how it began I just started and I did some random stuff getting the materials of course I encountered it encountered the reaper Leviathan and I died after that I did everything again for that I made a base and then I decided to go to the the ghost leviathans area but I did not know that there was a reaper following me so when I arrived there I will still driving and I was horrifying to see a ghost Leviathan I was running away but then the clash of the Titans began and the reaper and the ghost Leviathan crashed and it's kind of cool it like well the one winner actually was reaper Leviathan pretty cool right
The sea dragon can even hurt you accidentally. 😅 I'd parked my cyclops beside the primary containment facility, already turned off and effectively invisible, when the sea dragon bumbled over. He bumped into my cyclops, which knocked it against the building, dealing 50% damage all told. Then, of course, as soon as I got out to fix it, he spotted me and started shooting fire balls, which thankfully didn’t hit the cyclops and damage it further. Scared the crap out of me, though!
to be honest i kinda feel bad for the sea dragon's lack of food to survive
A sea dragon got my prawn suit from 100 to 9 in two seconds and slapped me through the map around a corner, I think they just hate me

there are 3 aggressive leviathans: reaper, ghost and sea dragon. and there are 3 passive/defensive leviathans: reefback, sea treader and sea emperor, so there are 6 leviathans
Is the inactive lava zone optional for completing the game? Cuz I really thought there was only one Sea Dragon Lev left. maybe I only ever saw two and conflated them as the same dude? idk
you dont really need to do anything in the inactive zone if i remember you can just zip through it

If a Sea Dragon is facing directly at you and clearly has it's mouth closed while staring at you

The sea dragons are a leviathin that I may or may not have made go extinct in my subnautica world, its fun trying to kill them with the prawn suit.
