You can find a lot of channels these days that are all about the aesthetic of living in an old home and country life. They make it look impossibly easy, and their clothes and hair are always perfect. It's so unrealistic. I love that you show the hard work it takes, as well as the beautiful things. Keeping it real! And you're so lucky to have that beautiful view.

Alex! My house is in Hollywood, Ca near the famous HOLLYWOOD sign. It is 102 years old. I stripped every door, window, doorframe, window frame and every cupboard door (31 to be exact). I did it exactly like you are doing. I had a cast on my left foot while I was doing all that. I was 20 years younger but I'm glad I did it. I am so proud of the work that you and your mom are doing on your precious antique home.

Where I come from we would call someone of Alex's age a woman, not a child. Amazing how things differ from around the world. For instance, in America, a ten year old would be referred to as an adult.

    • @joanneriley3899

@@helenbartoszek243I think you’re being a little over sensitive! Everyone is someone’s “child”, and anyone of a much younger age, than the person expressing, would indeed be referred to, as a child. Or in this case, a “sweet child”. I read it as a term of endearment in fact, nothing derogatory felt at all.
I even bet that Gail would refer to Alex as a “sweet Child”?
As for a 10yr old being labelled an adult……. No where on gods green earth smh 🤦‍♀️

Such a beautiful place to be privileged to live, not unlike where I live in Canada. When we renovated our house, we did it room by room and I had to strip every door and every door frame, thick oil based paints, many coats probably lead and under it all it had all been sprayed with some kind of gummy sealer way back in the 1950's....a heat gun was the only way to go when I did the stripping in the 1990's. I also stripped the stairs from the main floor to the upstairs as they too had layers and layers of paint....all worth it in the end...

Dearest Alex, I am a Soapmaker and have to wear a similar mask to make soap for hours at a stretch. It can definitely irritate your skin and cause spots! I clean my skin with Neutrogena wipes before putting the mask on plus put on a layer of moisturiser- then every time I take it off for more than a few minutes wipe my skin with the wipes AND quickly wipe/clean out the mask. Wash the mask out with warm water and soap after each use and leave to air dry ready for next day. It may seem like a bother but your skin will thank you. You are doing a fantastic job- I’m getting tired just watching you… you are an inspiration to lots of young women and girls out there. Good on you, as they say here in NZ, your bloods worth bottling! Alex, it's wonderful to see you progress in re-doing your room. So many young people now are too impatient and just want things done fast and easy. That's too bad too, because the feeling of satisfaction when you see the result of your time and effort is soooooo satisfying and heart-filling. The window view in your room is awe-some! It's better than any painting could be. I notice anaglypta (or similar textured wall treatment) on the wall next to the door. Amazon sells some patterns of that very thick wallpaper treatment. It's perfect for the age of your cottage, and depending on the paint and pattern choice, can add lots of character; plus it hides a multitude of surface issues in your wall plaster. My grandma applied a wallpaper to just one wall in her bedrooms, which became the accent wall behind the bed--plus it saved a lot of money doing only one wall. I always thought it looked lovely. I see you have tried many swatches of dark, moody green on your walls. I hope you might consider a mid-tone green (still can be moody rather than bright). Also, you have perhaps already done this, but I recommend looking at a LOT of interior decor pics on the net before selecting a color. Whichever direction your window faces will greatly affect how the light plays on your walls. Northern exposure will strongly affect your paint choice and make it even darker. Oh, and a hint for you if you need to remove paint from any metal hardware in future: avoid the toxic chemicals. An overnight simmer in a pot of water (little squeeze of dish soap added) will lift that paint very well. See here-- [ www.thisoldhouse.com/painting/21016353/how-to-strip-paint-from-hardware ]. Looking forward to your next post!

A little tip regarding removing old screws that seem impossible is to heat them up - which i think you found out by accident... Heating them up makes them expand which in turn cracks any paint, varnish or pine sap. I really felt for you Alex while stripping that paint - I did an entire staircase for my mum many years ago, banister rails, stairs and all, done with a heat gun as you did. It took me a week just to get the paint off! Then of course there was the rubbing down and varnishing with a matt, clear varnish. Well worth the effort in the end though. Your room is going to look beautiful.

Alex, seeing you in a coat looks welcoming, It is a 96 degrees here but feels like a hundred and five!you might have said this was from the winter. I wish you would stain the wood, I’m ready for white to go away on furniture and trim. You are surely working hard. Hope it turns out exactly how you want it.

I think the heat gun did an amazing job loosening up the paint. The view out your window is absolutely breathtaking. I’m glad you are doing videos of the restoration of your bedroom.

Alex, this door is a old tonge and grove solid door. I love the wood! I really love the look of original old wood!!!

You have the most amazing view from your window.. such gorgeous country. I personally like the raw wood of the door, kind of like an old vintage look for a 300 year old farmhouse. Good luck with the rest of the renovations. Excited to see it finished.

Hi Alex & Gail. Enjoy your channels a lot. I've done a fair bit of paint stripping by heatgun myself in my day...unfortunately mine turned out to be lead paint & needed professional removal. Two things I wanted to share. 1. Another non-chemical paint removal for stripping hinges/metal findings uses a non-food dedicated crockpot and letting the hot/boiling water soften & remove it. 2. A craft idea that might work for you for your channel and/or for sale - making buttons out of sea/river pottery/glass shards and drilling two button holes in. Don't know if that's of interest to you but would love to see you try it. Might encourage others to do similar...and I'd love to have a set of those myself! Best wishes!!

Use an old slow cooker with water and soak the hardware overnight. Paint usually wipes right off. Use a cooker you wont be using for food.❤

You can strip the paint off of old hinges by boiling them in a strong vinegar and water solution. No harsh chemicals.

Don't you think that wooden frame with the wooden door would be absolutely gorgeous with the painted walls? I think would be absolutely gorgeous stained like a honey color. I can't tell you how many times I wish I had an old house to make over like you guys have. I like the original wood that they used on the trims and stuff I just don't like it dark I like it lighter.
    Just a thought

Put your hinges in an old crockpot with water and vinegar and turn on the pot on medium high and let cook for a couple of days, and the paint should come right off.😊
