    I was always amazed at the size of everything when i moved to Canada from the UK 30 years ago. Houses/Kitchens and such were just monstrous in size. Life in North America is not that great to be honest, even though I have been very successful in life living in Canada. I just miss the closeness of small town UK, where you know everyone and see everyone at the local pub. Walking in the countryside with the dog, quick trips to the beach and such. Canada is such a vast place, with nothing to do. I am in Houston for work for 3 weeks and it is boring as heck. Hoping one day to move back to a more simple life of walking to the pub for lunch and rolling my groceries back home in my shopping trolley!!!! Enjoy yourselves over there, looks like a wonderful house and place to live a quiet life with less stress.

      My maternal Scots grandparents live in Canada 3rd generation. The country is enormous. People actually travel the equivalent of London to Birmingham everyday to go work. It’s normal for them. The houses are very big also, usually made from wood and stone. In the suburbs, front and back gardens are large.
      I also have relatives in Australia and New Zealand, so I visit there also. The commonwealth is one big family. Australia is very hot in summer . Canada is very cold in winter both have a British temperament and lifestyle .

      I appreciate your comments re Scotland, my wife’s Mom is from there and we love it there! Canada is a huge country and while you have not named where you live in Canada, the idea of boring is of course subjective. We live on the East Coast and have ready access to our Downtown (very walkable) with all kinds of restaurants and pubs to visit, theatre and other cultural activities. We have five universities in the local area so the community is quite diverse and better for it. Recreation means swimming / Paddle Boarding / Kayaking any time we want and literally 10minutes from the house. Of course, spending time on the water (Sailing / Motor Boats) are crazy popular as well. Gravel Riding / MTB re cycling is quite popular and multiple routes are readily available. I also ride Off Road Moto re Hare-scrambles / Enduro so if that is your cup of tea, there is a wonderful community here to pursue that realm of sport. Of course camping and hiking are readily available and quite popular as well. Winter means skating on the lakes and ponds and Alpine Skiing as well. The great outdoors may not be your cup of tea but give yourself another chance and get out there and live.

    Unfortunately, we must wait til retirement before we can appreciate Scotland on a full-time basis. For now, we have to be satisfied with quarterly trips.

    I have Victorian style porcelain sinks that are large and deep in all my bathrooms, toilets and the kitchen. Over time with built on the back to create another room and a large bathroom, discovered a cellar many years ago that we made rooms in, the opened up the loft area also with roof windows. With more children we created more rooms. We have right children altogether. All,grown adults now. But the youngest and his wife, and their two children now live with us and our eldest son who has special needs. It just works well. Always there are children in our home. Children make a home, a home. 😀👍👍💗💗

      England and Wales is the same, but Scotland especially goes out of it's way to assert its own authority through their devolved government.

    • @MarlynMeehan
      @MarlynMeehan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@daveofyorkshire301 Scotland retained its own legal system after the Act of Union. As a Scot I never agreed with devolution. Just another level of government we don't need. Having slightly different legal, education systems wasn't a problem so I saw no need for devolution.

    • @daveofyorkshire301
      @daveofyorkshire301 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MarlynMeehan That's another argument that is both political and regional based upon the current and past separatist movement Scotland has had.
      The SNP (Scottish National Party) is proof of that, their stated goal has been Scottish independence for well over a decade. Don't pretend this isn't true, you even had a referendum on this very issue, because they've been dominant in your devolved government for a long time, and pushing independence all the time.
      So there is a significant number who are voting them into your devolved government who want complete separation. Your argument does not stand.
      What you call slightly different is significantly different in law, education, fiscal policies, funding of public services and education, and recently Draconian social speech laws. Scotland does do it differently, you can't brush that under the carpet and pretend it's the same.

    The main big difference with England and Wales is offers aren’t legally binding until contracts are exchanged which usually happens months after the viewings, offers, surveys, utility searches, legal bits etc, This means sellers can cancel a sale for any reason up to exchange (so months the after the initial offer), including accepting a higher offer or just deciding not to move, and you loose everything if you are the buyer. It’s very stressful and silly. The Scottish and US process is much better!

We are from Glasgow but left in 1966 when we got married to live in SA for a few years, then moved to Nth Yorkshire with my husbands job. I would love to move back but my husband loves it here, our daughter lives in Scotland but our son lives near us. I love the way you've colour painted all the woodwork, as we tend to paint it all white, but what a refreshing change, so very tempted to colour it now as we plan to decorate soon. Your house looks great and so refreshing to hear young people being content and not getting into debt for a big flashy house, which seems to be the way now with the majority of couples. The US Property buying process and legal stuff is all ported from English Law when America was a territory of Great Britain.
    It is the same process with Land and property. You rent the land from the Govt, US or UK. You do NOT own the land, but RENT it from the Govt.
    You may own the structure on the property, but that is all you have.
    The difference between the UK and the US this.
    In the UK anything on the land belongs to the Govt, as you said, minerals anything below ground. You cannot mine or touch anything.
    In the US - because they have large tracts of land, the tenants are allowed to exploit the resources.
    Most countries operate similar laws on tenancy of land. It is strange that people think they OWN the land, but they most certainly DO NOT.
    If the Govt wants their ;land back - they just do a Compulsory Purchase Order and they will usually offer you the market rate. If you do not accept the offer
    they just kick you out anyway.
    You know this is the case if there is a Govt body called something like: The Land Registry. It is a legal catalogue of who is renting what from the state.
    But yeah, people think they OWN the land when they buy a property, but nope - they are tenants, and they pay a tax to the Govt.
    In England there is the anomaly that is the Duke of Westminster, but soon that will be resolved by Royal Decree.

      @@SimpleScottishLiving i live in a tiny town called Benton, in Kennebec County, away from the maddening crowd! Lol! Summers in Maine are filled to capacity with tourists from everywhere! They congregate in the southern portion in and around the Portland area, and southern beaches. But, as nice as that is, there’s so much more to Maine. It’s actually very European in feel. Thats what I love about it. Where in Scotland did you find your home? And if I dare ask, was it really expensive? They have just announced that the nationwide price here is now $451,000! Yikes! My poor grandson can’t buy a house and he’s an electrician!

    There isn't really an equivalent of a US-style real-estate agent in the UK. UK estate agents are agents for the vendor and never for the buyer.
    If you ever get around to buying another house - especially in Scotland - you will probably wish there *were* US-style agents.
    (There is a TV show on Channel 4 called 'Location, Locatiom, Location' where the hosts act as agents for the buyers,)
    Scottish house-buying process is also different in the fact that if you make an offer on a house that is accepted it is binding on both parties; this is not true of the rest of the UK.
    BTW don't let an electrician near your bathroom, or you will lose your sockets there! (Which you did!)

    We lived in the same exact size with our two kids for several years! (California, of course)
    What I love about your place is it seems like they made good use of the space. I remember always wishing we just had a little entryway like that & some kind of separate nook for the table, instead of having to share it with the living space. We also had one bathroom, and under the stairs there was a closet. We toyed with the idea of what it would take to put a bathroom under there but alas, never did. It definitely got chaotic sometimes so I think you're definitely going to be very glad about that choice! 😉

      Many of our Scottish family and friends considered it small for our size of family, but we can appreciate it may not be small to everyone 🙂 Thanks for watching! Zach also worked in law enforcement in the U.S. for many years, so we think his accent changed as a result of not wanting to stand out during a quite contentious period.

      It's definitely on the small side for a 3/1, especially by American standards. Our 2/2 apartment in L.A was bigger than this. Around 900sqft would be a nice 2/1 guest/pool house in the back yard or a really nice 1/1 with a home office perhaps.

    I don't know if anyone else has put a comment on here about the dual electric socket on the wall in your bathroom above the sink. Just letting you know that's against regulations and very dangerous. Electrical installations in bathrooms must comply with special requirements that are explained in Part P of the UK Building Regulations. Socket outlets should not be permitted in bathrooms or shower rooms (apart from shaver-supply units). This is unless they can be fitted a minimum distance of three metres from the bath or shower. Shaver sockets without transformers should not be used in a wet area such as a shower room or bathroom . Please get the socket isolated ASAP for your families safety. I suggest you get a qualified electrician to check the circuitry and at the same time ask about installing a water supply next to a fuse box in regards to your new toilet room. Good luck 😊

    • @SimpleScottishLiving
      @SimpleScottishLiving  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the comment! We are working with an electrician, and he has removed the outlet in the main bathroom. We’re now discussing the half bath and options. Truly appreciate you taking the time to make sure all is well and safe ❤️

    • @matchmade44
      @matchmade44 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I noticed that bathroom socket too - amazed the previous owners had it but it could have been a private DIY modification. Genuinely dangerous because of course we use 240V in the UK versus 110V in the US.
      Nice to see Farrow and Ball paint options being played with. It has been known, ahem, for their colours to be copied by a paint matching service at a supplier of cheaper but still good quality paint.
      You will probably find the paint colour looks different in every room and it will subtly change with the seasons and time of day. All that exterior green light will bounce off the internal paint colour. I can remember Californians and US Southerners I knew in Cambridge commenting on how long sunrises and sunsets last in the UK, and on the different bewitching nature of northern daylight compared to the blast of light you get at more southern latitudes. This will apply even more in Scotland - short winter days, but very long in summer, and the personality of your house and garden will change month by month with the natural light.
