At the end of the day,Eurovision was designed to pick the best song,not staging.Staging should never take over the quality of the song.This is probably been the best song since Loreen’s Euphoria in my opinion.Vocally it’s on point and that’s the main thing.

I was just watching Salvador's performance, I think his staging would be really fitting with Duncan's song.

Just because the stage looks boring, nothing changes that much, the song is slow and lovely and his vocals are great. He's not copying, there has been many performances like this before Salvador.

2017 does not have master on stagging like Russia or Azerbaijan, Love Ducan that is why I am worry about him
The simple things that can probably make the staging better ( i ll vote for Netherlands no matter what) :
1) When he sings the versus, the blue sky/or water above him can flow/move slowly and in the chorus suddenly rapidly to emphasize the dynamic of the chorus.
2) Low lighting targeting only at him like a beam (rise like a phoenix style with blue beam this time) during the versus and suddenly bright light when the chorus comes in.
3) Sitting on a rock during the versus and standing up when the pre-chorus part with the guitar comes in. At the end, returning back to the rock and moving his head down with sadness.
Hi there, Dutchie here. I totally agree about the piano, it looks a bit cheap. But overall pretty happy with his first rehearsals. There is room for some changes and I hope the dutch delegation will listen to the feedback the get from others. Then it will blow us away

He doesn't want to hid behind a keyboard, he wrote the song behind a keyboard and he wants to show the story of it.
There have been so many instruments on stage since the orchestra was banned. What's your point?
Steve v G Well, in some cases it does elevate the performance (see the Slovenian entry as an example). Imagine he would be there standing doing absolutely nothing else than looking at her (creepy). I must confess the second rehearsal was definitely better and they’ve managed to save the instrument lol

If the piano is everything what people don’t like, the Netherlands did a very good job. A piano come on! His voice ,the music everthing is so amazing. Let’s not focus on the piano and Let’s see what the first performance will let us see. But i understand that Duncan the message Better can bring if he is not at the piano if you have so much expertations
Duncan and his song is magical, the staging is simple and beautiful, i dont need more to recognizance the masterpiece, im sure with nice camera work it will be amazing on tv.

I guess it was hard to meet the expectations as he had the best music video... I liked his standing performances in Amsterdam and London where I did experience them live... let's see.. the song needs to appeal to the audience the first time.. and that still happens I'm sure..

This is ESC - the European SONG Contest. Especially during this last decade we seemed to have forgotten this with our fixations about shows, LED lights and gimmicks. Shows do not make a good song - they are just a distraction and they can distract us from the fact that some songs might not be that good after all. After watching a visually exciting show and then hearing the same song without those visuals, one realises "what the hell was all that overrated reaction about?" Salvador Sobral gave us the direction 2 years ago - no shows, no dancers, no particularly elaborate visuals - just him on the stage singing his song. That is the way it should be so we can really judge a song and a singer for what they are really worth. We need a return to a really song contest.
I hope the Netherlands keep to that format. Its emotion and vulnerability will only be achieved by a simplistic approach. Duncan's song does not need any pyrotechnics and BS. The strength is in the song and its singer
Don't be so carefull criticizing the polls favourite. I honestly expected more too. But because it's the favourite to win, it's described simple and minimalist, would it be Slovenia or San Marino it would be just boring. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
This. They shit on other songs that are simple for being "dull" and "uninteresting". Yet when it comes to favourites and giants, it's "refreshing". I actually prefer simple and minimalistic staging and I love Duncan as an artist and his song but the bias is obvious.

It is all about expectations isn't it. I love that it is a very simple clean setting, the only thing I dont like is that he is sitting behind a piano. I was hoping he would stand alone...with simple but effective lighting and his arms spread at the end..vulnerable but strong. But I am still happy with this.

Portugal won without staging. In the 90s and before everyone had the same staging. Staging is overrated.
Duncan wanted to go back to how and when he wrote the song. Therefore the simple keyboard.He wanted to feel on stage the same way he felt when he wrote the song. It will be great..simply because Duncan, his voice and the song are great!
I was scared when I read he was behind a piano. I always visioned Duncan standing solo behind a mic and a spotlight on him in the beginning. Then, as he goes into his falsetto, the LEDs kick in with watery images, cloudy stuff, all set in these aqua colours. Then, as the chorus hits, we have flashing white lights flaring and swooping down on the stage, filling the venue entirely. THAT would be my vision for Arcade

In general I really like the staging. I'm so glad they kept it simple so the song will stand out. However I agree that they should change the keyboard into a proper piano. I also think it could be even more powerful if he stands up for the bridge + last chorus, but overall I'm quite happy with the staging and Duncan (and his team ofc) already made us proud for sure!
Duncan's vocals are excellent, as always. But I have to agree that the cheap keyboard looks silly :
what he deserves is a grand piano. And the lazer light effects can be 10 times better too...
Furthermore, I would really rather see him stand behind a microphone during the entire song.
All things considered, he is definately my favorite. I think Duncan deserves to win.

Thats not right! If The song is not good then you dont go to take a look to The video. He sings really amazing and a lot of People feel emotional connected to The song. The first time i heard it it was without The video. I get goosebumps and a lot of People to. If you dont like it i respect you its oké. But dont say that it is a lot of marketing Thats not True. I'm glad the staging is disappointing. Eventhough I'm a huge fan of Arcade, I don't want there to be an obvious winner. There are a lot of underrated songs this year that deserve appreciation as well.

Richard Marx, "Right here waiting" type of song and especially stage performance. Beautiful, indeed, but not necessarily a winner. There are other contenders on the par.
I disagree. Do not underestimate how impactful Arcade has been to a lot of people. It is not just a simple ordinary ballad song. The song is technically, lyrically and emotionally superb above other songs this year.
@@devonguy8109 There's nothing in Arcade above the song I mentioned in my comment above or on a higher level. And I'm not underestimating anything, since I also know that the bookmakers helped Arcade from the beginning by cementing it in many people's minds that it "must" be the winner. It's not necessarily only the other, "normal" way around, which is the impact of the song determining the odds ... Arcade is a very good song, but, again, there are some others in the contest which bring their own special flavor to it, on the par with Arcade, even though they're not necessarily low-tempo.

On the contrary, so, neither did I say that. It's a ballad, though, and nothing on another level than the other mentioned one. Regarding the "deserved winner" character, of course, it was one of the songs which deserved to win. So it did. However, to me, the "best song" from among many songs of different genres is a bit of a nonsense. So long!

Hey @wiwiblogs, I've just found out that "Contestants and Artists shall perform the songs live on stage (obviously...), accompanied by a recorded backing-track only (without live instruments!!!!)" Why no live instruments??? Whats the point of the piano then??? What about Alexander Rybak, was it all fake??? :P
And of course "the Backing track shall contain no vocals of any kind or any vocal imitations aiming at replacing or assisting the live/original voice of the Contestant(s)"... Good thing this doesn't apply to MadonnaMDNAMadameX interval performance. ;)
One tip: he should be there just sitting with a big book and a pen.... looking like some kind of a poet.... and stars or videos of water in the background ..... it would be better looking.....
