I was born in Camden moved away when i got married ,i realy miss going there ,then walking down by canal .they say you can eat food from around the world 😊
It is important to remember that the reputation of British food being bad, stems from American servicemen returning home after the second world war. People in the USA have never suffered the deprivations the British public endured, stoically, for years. What they didn't take into account was that the supply chain had been so badly disrupted that rationing continued for almost 10 years after the war ended. The end of the war didn't magically reinstate the availability of common foodstuff that we take for granted nowadays. New agreements had to be forged with overseas suppliers. Local market gardeners had to start all over again, clearing the land, sometimes of unexploded bombs. So many of the experienced growers had gone to war, many didn't come back. Great Britain was a mess. When my parents married in 1953, they couldn't get a Wedding cake - there was still no established means of getting dried fruit in the quantities needed and they had limits on other ingredients. Without coupons, food just couldn't be purchased. So yes, for a long time, British food was bland and uninspiring (coffee couldn't be got, so a substitute was made from chicory and parsnips) and gained a really unjust reputation which stuck. Keep on dispelling the myths, please! You are doing a fabulous job!
I found out that there was a family wedding cake for during the war years and the years after. It was 3 tiers but the bottom 2 tiers were fake and the top very small tier was a real cake that a load of individual peoples rations for dried fruit were used to make. The bottom 2 tiers were used for the next wedding
My dad was born in 1947 and my mum was born in 1950. Both can remember going with their mums to shops and handing over slips from the family ration books to get their allocation of food stuffs for the week. So rationing of food went on into the 1950's in Britain.
@@jaredwoodward919 I can remember that. The Queen's Coronation was one turning point - they took food rationing off so we could have food for the celebrations. My school had a party the day before - it was the first time I'd seen fairy cakes and jelly. The next day we had a street party, trestle tables, laden with food, all down one side of the road. Three of us (aged 5-6) each grabbed a plate of goodies and disappeared into a neighbour's house where we hid behind the sofa while we stuffed ourselves. I don't know what the boys had but I ate a whole serving-plate's worth of toasted teacakes all by myself. I've been amazed ever since that three children, who'd rarely tasted sweet things before, managed to eat so much cake without throwing up, lol. Rationing was re-imposed a few days later.
So basically America did the equivalent of saying they don’t want to hang out with a person no more because they was really depressing at their parents funeral. 🤣😂
I lived in the U.K. for a year in the 1960s. And the food even then blew me away. Fish and chips with malt vinegar. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, with pan gravy, roast potatoes and carrots, plus fresh cooked green peas. Spotted dick pudding with fresh made custard sauce. Steak and kidney pie with mashed potatoes. Butcher made pork sausages. A full English breakfast on a cold bleek morning. High tea. Cucumber sandwiches and fresh strawberries with clotted cream in summer. I could go on, but I'm starting to salivate badly. Fortunately here in Australia I can still get my hands on these foods, and more.
Mmm I’m English and still live here. You basically just described 90% of my diet 😂, that was a joke obviously but I do eat fresh veg with different things most evenings. I don’t like cucumber but I do love proper cheddar cheese sandwiches for my lunch at work and a good full English on a Friday morning and Sunday morning followed by a roast dinner on Sunday afternoons. I live about 45 mins away from the caves that actual cheddar cheese is made in. If you haven’t tried actual cheddar cheese not just the cheese they call cheddar but isn’t then you should try it. There is nothing else that tastes like it as it’s aged in the mouldy caves which is what gives it its unique flavour. I’m from the Westcountry which is famous for its cider so a cold cider on a hot day is a must for us lol
I think the myth that English food is bland and horrible stems back to the war, we were on rations so butter, sugar, salt etc were not easily available and rationing still went on after the war. But yeah I think Americans etc that came to England during that time took back the tails of how bad our food was…..completely forgetting most British had to grow there own vegetables if they wanted them then and meat, fish, eggs were a luxury for the rich or thieves who sold it on the black market.
OK, ime British and biased, but what ime hearing from Americans on TH-cam is not only is our food tastier but is better quality and it does wind me up when some foreigners say British food is shite. Enjoy Britain guys 🇬🇧🇺🇸
@@hognaut Apart from roast potatoes, you still don't seem to know what to do with vegetables. Everytime they're just bland and boiled in plain salt water. Where's the finely chopped sweated shallots for the peas?, butter and parsley for the carrots?... They're also usually overcooked, unless you go to a higher end restaurant where the chefs have gotten it into their heads that fresh veg needs to be 'crunchy' by which they mean half-raw but charred. Vegetables have no business being crunchy outside of a salad. Plus a lot of people think that iceberg lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes constitutes a 'salad'. Without dressing it's merely the ingredients for one, and a very boring watery one at that.
@@diarmuidkuhle8181 what the bloody hell are you on about, you are just sooo wrong. @@ColinAnderson-x9gI'm going by what I've been so far served in most British restaurants and households. The 'roast dinner' tends to be two sad slices of floppy gray meat with packet gravy and tasteless veg.
The yellow light is a Belisha Beacon. Belisha beacon is a yellow-coloured globe lamp atop a tall black and white striped pole, marking pedestrian crossings of roads in the United Kingdom,[1] Ireland, and other countries historically influenced by Britain, such as Hong Kong, Malta, and Singapore. The beacons were named after Leslie Hore-Belisha (1893-1957), the Minister of Transport who, in 1934, added beacons to pedestrian crossings, marked by large metal studs in the road surface. These crossings were later painted in black and white stripes, and thus are known as zebra crossings. Legally, pedestrians have priority (over vehicles in the carriageway) on such crossings.
I used to be a trader on Camden Market for about 6 years in the 1980s. I had a pitch next to Allan Williams ('The man who gave away the Beatles') and a few yards from the shop run by Siouxie Sue (Siouxie and the Banshees). Inside the building was the original clothes market which included Anita Roddick (the beginning of 'Body Shop') and David Holah (founder of fashion house 'Body Map') Nowadays it's been swamped by tourists and the old charm has been lost to commercialization. But the food goes from strength to strength.
Yea there wasn’t a lot to speak on the music scene there without knowing the true history. Nothing really stood out. But we were only in Camden for 4-5 hours.
Then you must remember’ Falafel King’ , the first falafel stall under the arches in 1988, and a quirky restaurant called Kailash, run by a hippie! Good days!
Longboat!?...lol Sorry but when you said it on the video I just had a vision of Vikings jumping out of it. "Narrow boats", can be painted very beautifully also. Gypsy's of the water ways. 👍 Btw in the UK if we let our weather dictate what we could do and when we'd never get anything done. You can only get wet once! 😁
I knew it when I was editing I told Tiffany “ I got to fix this or I’m going to catch hell “ but when I first heard it all you could hear the house was “ sh@! …”then me cussing myself. 😂🤣😂 obviously playfully lol. I was (still am ) learning lol.
Those canals and the boats that travel in them were originally to move goods and services around the country, pulled by horses (beasts of burden) hence why there is always a towpath for them to move along by the side of every canal en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Towpath#:~:text=A%20towpath%20is%20a%20road,a%20boat%2C%20often%20a%20barge.
@@Trippingthroughadventures If you can get over here again you should see if you can spend some time in the Norfolk Broads, you can hire a narrow boat and live on it for a few days travelling up and down the canals visiting all the pubs and hiking across the fields. You'll have an amazing time and it would make for some great and unique videos for your channel!
It was American soldiers returning from WWII, that told Americans that British food (because of rationing) along with bad teeth etc etc! Finally Americans are catching up, a mere 80 years later. Well done 🎉
It went beyond that, though. The generation that grew up on rationing - my parent's generation - wanted their food like that. It was only as the next generation came along that things picked up.
As mentioned, "the British food being bad", was started by US soldiers during WW2 who experienced the UK during rationing. This was enforced more by the internet showing obscure local dishes and often literally ancient food nobody eats. Obviously the people who say that have ever tried stuff from the UK. You can find bad food anywhere for starters. Atleast we have strict hygeine laws for the most part and regulations on the quality of ingredients. Stuff tastes how it supposed to and not pumped full of chemicals
I've seen some desperate rear-guard actions by the "All British food is terrible" brigade. Even to claiming that the only decent food here is foreign. What American food isn't foreign? Pizza, spag-bol, meatloaf, apple pie, hamburgers...the list is endless I'll give them the native foodstuffs like turkey, sweetcorn, potatoes and tomatoes, but draw a discreet veil over spray-on cheese.
Hamburgers and buffalo wings too is American food lol, surprisingly the only thing Germany has like a hamburger was a hamburg sausage. But that being said, I found some bangers in the deep freeze yesterday and almost did a backflip. 🤣😂🤣
@@Trippingthroughadventures Apparently there's a 1st century Roman recipe for a minced beef patty, with or without bread. It seems nothing is new. I'm not sure I would have liked the Roman equivalent of ketchup on it though (no tomatoes back then). It was called garum; and was made from fermented fish guts.😆
@alfresco8442 lol nothing is, we can do it with anything even Britain, tea is Asian brought to England but a Portuguese princess, fish and chips by foreign fisherman, heck Ukrainian borsch tracks back to ancient Semeria. If you keep the same standard like you track British food nothing is very little is actually British food. You keep the countries to the same standards then we invented, cheese burger, cheese steak, hot dogs, chili, fajitas, the Cuban sandwhich, spagetti and meat balls burritos, orange chicken etc..
If you hang around till like 6 o'clock and they're starting to wrap things up for the day, you can get the food for £1 a portion. The stalls sell it off cheap, they can't pack up the surplus and take it away. I used to live in a house full of students and the deal was, one day a week you cook for everyone in turns. One day, it was my girlfriend and I's turn (we did two days a week because there were two of us). We'd been at Camden all day, it was getting kinda late and we knew when we got home, we've gotta cook and because it was getting late everyone would be waiting. We went to the food stalls, just starting to pack up spent £20 and got 4 carrier bags full of cartons of food. Chinese, Indian, Mexican and others. We got home everyone was waiting for dinner. We took the stuff into the kitchen, went into the living room and declared. Kata's and I's turn to cook tonight, but we can't be bothered so we got Chinese for everyone, all sorts, even some veggie dishes (for Tracey the house veggie). It's in the kitchen. The rush to the kitchen and the grab! But there was no need because there was loads of food. £20 to feed/satisfy 9 people. And you saw how good the food was at Camden. We were house heroes. It wasn't just another pasta tuna bake, from one of those who couldn't cook.
Those yellow lights do not denote "Abby Road Corssing", they are there for all zebra crossings and you as a pedestrian have right of way, cars are meant to stop if they see anyone waiting to cross.
To qualify this a little further, the requirement that drivers MUST stop for any pedestrians using a zebra crossing was supplemented in 2022 with wording stating drivers SHOULD stop for any pedestrians waiting to cross. Some might not be aware of the update.
The answer to the question "What are we going to do" is - go to the Pub. The answer is always go to the Pub. It might not solve the immediate problem but you will feel better.
If ever you come back to the UK. I'm sure lots of people have said to get outside London. The problem is where to base yourself. People think Edinburgh or such. NO And hear me out. Darlington in Northeast England And here's why... on the train York is 30min away Durham is 30min away Edinburgh is 1hr away London 3hr away The lake district a couple of hours away. With most of these you can come back to Darlington in the same day, so no need to keep relocating. Trains are expensive though, thats the big problem Anyway, just an idea ❤ ❤ from Northeast England ❤️
You’re correct in all of those points.. but Darlo isn’t the place it used to be.. but definitely the North east is great.. especially Upper Teesdale part of the Durham Dales ( I’m from Hamsterley Village near the forest ) 😊
@Ionabrodie69 I know, Darlo used to be a place worth visiting all of its own. Though there are still good pubs... in the main I would have said stay in Durham but it's expensive... ish
the only reason that Americans think British food is bad is because of the rationing in WWII. in WWII Britain had a food shortage, so meat was rare and most homes tried to grow their own vegetables and fruit. when the American forces finally joined the war, they brought their own food supplies with them. meaning that they was eating steaks, while the British was eating fatty mince and offal. so it was the G.I's returning after the war that spread the rumour that British food was horrible. since most Americans have not traveled to the UK, they still believe that we still eat that way.
Well we are out here doing the lords work stopping all the lies spread by our fellow countryman. They say French food is better than British food, but I also seen French people shove a duck in a press and make gravy from its organs and pour it over what looked like another boiled duck…. So ima say that’s down to opinion 😂🤣😂🤣
@@Trippingthroughadventures well as a Jerseyman (Jersey in the Channel Islands, we founded New Jersey) we have both French and British food readily available here. as we are British, but was French in the past, as we are only 14 miles off the French coast. we was also the only British territory occupied by the Germans for 5yrs in WWII.
I live in Wales always on a visit to London Camden is a must go place to visit. The pubs and the food stalls are amazing. Camden Town is an amazing place in general. I love it there.
People saying that British food is bad is obviosly a stereotype, but has also gained a lot of traction recently, memes everywhere; I don't really know why, tiktok or something. The basics of British food are quite good, thought there isn't a huge repertoire to be honest, but we do have good things, British cakes are as good as anything else anywhere and we have excellent quality meat. Also, the UK is one of the most internationalised countries in the world and the people are more sophisticated than most places in Europe (I live in Spain and have lived in Germany and Russia). We like spices and are much more open to new things than almost anywhere in Europe.
I am glad that you enjoyed your time in Camden. That is a better way to learn about London than doing the tourist traps, cheaper too. In fact immersing yourselves in one place is generally better than rushing around. London started as a series of villages, which grew together, and if you stay local you can get something of that village vibe. Keep Reacting!
Welcome to the UK. glad your dispelling the thing about food. Its kind of crazy when you consider just how many different dishes their are from around the world, all here in London which is VERY cosmopolitan. You must go further afield, out of London and see all the other places there are. Good Luck have a great holiday! Come back again soon!!
Most people will tell you that the heart of the music scene is Denmark Street. There have been campaigns and a documentary made about the fight to save it. It was once the heart of the music business in the UK, publishers, writers, studios and of course the stores that sold the instruments - a number of which are still there. As the place where musicians went for their equipment, it was also a place where musicians advertised for other musicians, with many bands formed from leaving cards with their details on in the pinboards in alleyways. Big developers desperately want the land, but for now, it hangs on
This is a brief guide to Soho, beginning in Denmark Street and pointing out some significant spots. It’s still a trendy area, but for many decades, anyone who was anyone - and some who weren’t - played their, recorded there, and shot their album covers there. th-cam.com/video/BNF9WWlgSdo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aRiBTYiBaFUXvalG
I've sat in a pub beer garden, on a hot summer's day, that backed onto a canal and had narrow boats passing occasionally in their own, slow, lazy manner. It was quite possibly the most relaxed I've ever been.
You could have gone to Oxford by train easily from London, approx 1.5hrs max, tour walked the place and returned to London same day. Glad you came and hope you enjoyed your UK stay!

Another great video, next time you're over make sure you get to places like manchester where we have fabulous places to eat, along with smaller towns where local produce and makers really go that extra mile
Narrowboats are pretty cool. They've barely changed in outward appearance since the canals were built during the Industrial Revolution and are making a bit of a comeback as cost effective homes.
In Birmingham and the West Midlands we also helped shape world music, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath (started playing in local pubs) founded heavy metal, Led Zeppelin pushed it further, Electric light Orchestra, Wizzard (glam rock pioneers) and The Moody blues did the same for concert rock, and there were very many other musicians who helped, such as The Selecta, and UB 40 with their two-tone reggae/Ska/punk fusion from Coventry. All over the UK there are such places and foodie stuff such as the Balti triangle around Birmingham, the UK is like that all over.
If you have a disney channel subscription there is a 4 part documentary on Camdens music scene throughout the 80s and 90s, quite an interesting and amusing watch.

London, unlike any other world city, is the world in a city! You will heard every world language and see world cuisine in London, largely due to the British empire global reach and tourism driven by the beauty of the UK and openness of the people, though we appear reserved we are mostly respectful of others and helpful! Try researching UK GEOGRAPHY, by county and relevant attractions within that county/area! Also try public transport: trains, buses and of course UBER cabs! That way, you experience the UK in it's widest sense.🎉
You can get any type of food you can think of in the Britain and it is always great, i have no idea why we have a reputation for bad food. BTW great vid and i loved that nudist colony joke it made me laugh 👍
You need to come up to Yorkshire proper. It's the biggest county in the UK and is therefore split into four divisions administratively. The people are great (very welcoming,) the scenery is fantastic and the food is something else - from real Yorkshire pudding to incomparable fish and chips, especially in and around Whitby.
We usually have lamb with mint sauce. we grow fresh mint, has to be in a large pot or it will spread like mad! Chop the leaves very finely, add some sugar and chop further scrape into a bowl and add vinegar, and stir. Lovely.
It amazes me that so many people put down our food on the say so of a bunch of America GI's stationed here for two years who went home and announced to anyone who would listen how vile it was and from that everyone believed it. The truth was America didn't come into the war until 41 and we had been at war for quite sometime and food was on rations for the entire country. If you were lucky your mom knew how to cook and could turn those rations into something palatable. Our food was been sent to the soldiers who we readily gave up for. We have some of the finest restaurants anywhere and some of the top Michelin chefs. Master Chef originate from here. The British Bake Off is another. Tourists very rarely step outside of London so have no idea of the culinary delights; London is good but not as good as our locals. In every single fish and chip shop you will find to add to them a tub of curry sauce or gravy or mushy peas. London is expensive but the further you travel away from there the cheaper things are. Tikka Masala is actually British.
I have a question for Americans who have visited the UK. How does it feel when visiting the UK to be able to cross the road anywhere you want and not get in trouble lol???.....

OK, a quick tip about being British. As soon as it starts raining, or hailing, you are required by law to dive into the nearest Pub. This is not optional. There was a perfectly acceptable Pub opposite where you were standing, please don't make this error again or you'll end up in the Tower of London dungeon. Just a quick heads-up guys... If any tourists are visiting the famous Zebra Crossing on Abbey Road... Please be aware... That UK Traffic Laws... State that vehicles on the road... Must give way to pedestrians waiting to cross the road on a Zebra Crossing... So if you're waiting for a break in traffic to copy The Beatles crossing Abbey Road on camera... Don't stand on the kerb edge... As drivers may think that you're waiting to cross the road and stop for you... This causes traffic to build up in the area... As vehicles will constantly be stopping for what they think are pedestrians waiting to cross... If you want to take a photo of you and your friends on the Abbey Road Crossing... Just step back from the kerb edge... So that drivers will know that you're not wanting to cross the road... And traffic can flow more freely... And allow tourists the gaps in traffic to eventually get their Abbey Road Crossing photos... As some might not be aware of the rules that UK drivers must follow by law... Stopping at a Zebra Crossing to allow pedestrians to cross safely is one of them... Cheers guys. 👍

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Came to the comments to say the same thing 👍
Me and Tiffany like to sit and talk about all the food we miss 😂🤣😂
If you like steak and kidney pie you'll love steak and kidney pudding, it's made with suet pastry and is delicious.
Good for you. I hope when you the foods in Australia it will bring back happy memories of eating in the UK
OK, ime British and biased, but what ime hearing from Americans on TH-cam is not only is our food tastier but is better quality and it does wind me up when some foreigners say British food is shite.

Good days!

Sorry but when you said it on the video I just had a vision of Vikings jumping out of it.

It went beyond that, though. The generation that grew up on rationing - my parent's generation - wanted their food like that. It was only as the next generation came along that things picked up.
@@digitig Your reply is ambiguous
@@digitigwe had excellent food during the War. Three home cooked meals every day. Not an obese American among us!
We just want to spread the news that not only you’ll love it, but you will also go through a depression over it when you return home 😂🤣😂
I've seen some desperate rear-guard actions by the "All British food is terrible" brigade. Even to claiming that the only decent food here is foreign. What American food isn't foreign? Pizza, spag-bol, meatloaf, apple pie, hamburgers...the list is endless
I'll give them the native foodstuffs like turkey, sweetcorn, potatoes and tomatoes, but draw a discreet veil over spray-on cheese.
Tuna pasta bake means you can cook
Beans on toast or fish finger sandwiches means you can’t so don’t knock pasta bake

Durham is 30min away
Edinburgh is 1hr away
London 3hr away
The lake district a couple of hours away.
With most of these you can come back to Darlington in the same day, so no need to keep relocating.
Trains are expensive though, thats the big problem
Anyway, just an idea ❤

You’re correct in all of those points.. but Darlo isn’t the place it used to be.. but definitely the North east is great.. especially Upper Teesdale part of the Durham Dales ( I’m from Hamsterley Village near the forest ) 😊

@Ionabrodie69
I know, Darlo used to be a place worth visiting all of its own. Though there are still good pubs... in the main
I would have said stay in Durham but it's expensive... ish
The main problem with that plan is that you have to keep returning to Darlington… 😉
Trains are cheap for tourists; there's a BritRail Pass that gives unlimited train travel for x days.
the only reason that Americans think British food is bad is because of the rationing in WWII. in WWII Britain had a food shortage, so meat was rare and most homes tried to grow their own vegetables and fruit. when the American forces finally joined the war, they brought their own food supplies with them. meaning that they was eating steaks, while the British was eating fatty mince and offal. so it was the G.I's returning after the war that spread the rumour that British food was horrible. since most Americans have not traveled to the UK, they still believe that we still eat that way.

Yes it’s now on our bucket list.

Uk streetfood is good, but I’d love you to try a proper home cooked British roast.
Us too 😍😂
I can't wait to move to London, from another town in England, and I'll be living half an hours walk from Camden.
Narrow boats are also built to go on the UK canal system
Nice to see you got to experience a proper British Summer !!
The Cross-walk - when you walk on to it they get to stop and wait for YOU ! In Theory, I tend to wait to make sure or step out Very Carefully !
6.15 some people do call them a narrow boat I've always called them canal boats but narrow boat is another and I'm near Worsley Canal (Bridgewater Canal)
That's my home town, I hope you enjoyed your visit!
Loved it
Not longboats they are the Viking boats what you are seeing are canal boats. Which if you have the money you can buy and live on them.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the UK. I hope you also saw Hampstead and Notting Hill while you were in London? I think you would have been pleasantly surprised! Little Venice is also lovely - a lot of people moor their narrow boats and live on the canals ( not rivers 😉). You can walk along the canal from Camden Lock or do a boat trip.
Yeah, you guys mentioned harrods. Have you ever been to hamleys.
theres one thing to remember that there is no chemicals in British food
Britain's canals were used to move goods around the country, before the railways came. They were very effective.
Great video glad u enjoyed your time in the uk 👍
Horse radish or English mustard with roast beef, just a little bit though otherwise it overwhelms it.
Camden is still a centre for music of all genre's with dozens of venues. I always enjoy visiting and go to numerous gigs there. Other hotspots worth visiting, Borough Market, the Bermondsey mile, Shoreditch, Brick Lane (curry central), Battersea power station. In fact there are great places all over London!
I do like ya vlogs guys ngl! Hope you'll visit more rural areas in your next visit - you might experience a real sunday roast, or proper full english :) Seems like you had a great time here! ✌
Food glorious food cold jelly and custard 😅 . London street food is top notch 😊.
Canal boat, the. Boats criss cross were primarily used for transporting goods, now mostly pleasure, enjoy guys
