Fellow violin teacher here! I just played these myself and HOLY COW! They really are a great tool to have in your arsenal. I have never seen the U-Turn one before in my career, and will definitely share it with my students.
Hello SophieC , I’m an older gentleman who plays guitar. I’ve always loved singing of a violin or fiddle in my perspective. I just want to say thank you and that the way you describe the lesson “you’re gonna have to feel it “ Being a musician I understand ! You’ve encouraged me and again Thanks!!!😊
I like the first exercise because I never seen it before and I like the simplicity of it (without the bow lol). I can't wait to try these tomorrow morning.
Sophie, this is a very valuable lesson. I hope you keep traching. You seem to have a natural talent for it. Your instructions are clear and complete and your voice is comforting. Thank you!!
Hi William, thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words and encouragement. I am so glad you find it helpful, and I hope to continue to create content that does so! :)
Thankyou Sophie these are amazing exercises. I have been playing for 3 years and struggling with intonation not being consistent. The second exercise bowing D and G I haven't mastered yet but it's only been two days. I feel more control bowing slowly, I'm still not proficient but improving and have hope.
I have watched so many tone videos I didn’t think anyone would have something unique to offer, but this one does bring something new to the table! Thanks for posting.
There's another way this really helpful for beginning beginning beginners. I had trouble going from just learning to bow straight to bowing straight regardless of which direction my head was, which way I was looking. I had to stop and spend time bowing with my eyes closed, open but looking up, down etc because I found that looking at the music AND keeping a straight bow is oddly more difficult than it sounds. As my eyes got to the far right side of the page my bow ALWAYS seemed to follow my eyes. Apologies if that made zero sense but the 30 second bow, with my eyes closed, then open but looking around helped me ALOT! Thank you.
That totally made sense! Thank you so much for sharing all of that. You’re right, usually when looking at music (thus involving LH), it distracts from focusing on the RH and makes it more difficult to keep a straight bow. I am so happy you found these exercises helpful, and I hope you continue to learn more and make progress. Happy practicing! :)
very useful bow whip. It totally recreates my pinky falling off the bow problem. I will do this a few times a day and I am pretty sure if I can stablize during the whip, then I should have little issues keeping my pinky on the bow during play.
Thank you very much, im a guitarist who is moving onto violin and also piano, so understanding theory and sightreading sheet music isnt an issue. Im stuggling to get a really nice tone, and these exercises will most definitely help me out on my journey, thanks so much for the helpful video. God bless you sister ✝️

Helloo, thank you for your tutorial, its really helpful! I have one question regarding the 30-second-bow excercise: how can we make slow bow move without making scratchy sound ? Looking forwars to your response :)
Hello!! So happy you found it helpful! Great question. I would say this: start with maybe a 10 second bow. or whatever you can do easily. 5 seconds is perfectly fine to start as well. Start with a time that is challenging, yet you can create a beautiful sound. Then, inch the seconds up in increments of 1-3. For example: 5 seconds, 7, 10, 12, 14, etc. The key here is to make sure you don't feel a difference every time you add time, and gradually you'll be at 30 seconds or even a minute before you know it! Feel free to stay at certain times (ex. you're stuck at 10 seconds for a while) until you're comfortable moving on. Beauty of sound > quick progress. Hope this helps!
Hi! Thanks for asking. I have some Left Hand videos in this playlist if you want to check any of them out! th-cam.com/play/PLBk-X9YVgIbRdWmB-NA1lHk4UwwkykVyz.html&feature=shared
Is there any protonation of the forearm near the tip in the u drill. Is opposite side crease of the knuckle joint of the index finger nearest the finger nail in contact with the bow stick or can the stick be in contact with the index finger in between the finger nail knuckle and middle knuckle? Thank you for your video. Content and presentation a-one!
so glad you found it helpful!! yes there is pronation near the tip, thank you for pointing that out! I don't think it matters exactly where the contact point is, but I think I personally have the bow in contact with the index finger between the middle knuckle and finger nail knuckle. pronation is key here since the weight is being transferred!
Do we need to use our shoulder when using bow arm,I heard people said that it is bad because it create tension but i can't,I always need to use a little bit of my shoulder,is it really bad,do you feel some shoulder itching problem after playing?and last question,to create articulation when pulling the bow,do we need to use pronation and a little pressure from thumb and pinky,I heard this from daniel kurganov, very appreciated if you can see and reply this comment of mine,I'm sorry but as a beginner everything is so overwhelming to me
Hello! I think it’s best not to use the shoulder unless changing strings. Most of the movement comes from the forearm and maybe the upper arm, but squeezing the shoulder will result in tension as you said. Try to take a deep breath and play an open string completely relaxed. Stop, and then try again. Usually the squeezing of the shoulder is not something necessary; it’s just a habit that can be fixed :). I also usually don’t feel shoulder itching problem after playing, hmmm.. maybe try the relaxing open string exercise to see if that helps? Finally, yes you do use pronation when pulling the bow, but I’m not sure about pressure from the thumb. Pressing the thumb into the bow may create a bit of a choked sound, but perhaps his technique is just different than mine. I know this was a lot! I hope this information helps a bit, but i completely understand you may be feeling overwhelmed as a beginner. Feel free to ask questions anytime! Wishing you the best :).
Heyy I have a quick question... Does the tone or the sound also depend on the violin? Because my teacher told me that my violin sounds a bit squeaky and I wonder if I change the violin if it will sound better. Is it me that makes the sound squeaky or is it the violin?
Hey! Yes the violin definitely plays a factor in tone/sound, but I believe the tone depends more on the player :). It could be a combination of both, but if the playing technique isn’t there, then getting a new violin won’t fix the sound. I hope that makes sense! Wish you the best!
Hey Celina I would like to add that I had the same problem with my violin. It sounded squeaky and tone was almost dusty. I thought it was my fault and it was not. I upgraded my violin and I was shocked that I sounded actually very good. I can say with confidence if you can get a violin that is a good quality it will be the best thing you did. It made my practice so much easier and my progress faster. I hope you find solution ❣️
@@pluutoop OMG I TOTALLY AGREE I got a new violin of better quality and surprisingly the sound of the violin is MUCH BETTER 😆 I'm so happy that I'm not the one who was making those squeaky sounds. Now my ears don't hurt that much while playing 😀. Thanks a lot for your response!
That's a great question! There are four levels for each individual sting that your right arm should be at. The Elbow/right forearm should be parallel to the angle of each string level. I know this is a bit hard to explain via words, but I hope this can help! It's mostly about which level your right arm is at for each string.

The fastest way to get results is through slow practice.
Amen to that! It's a simple truth but hard to execute.
