Holy Moly Baldy... do more reviews... you show the bike being used, not just a press demo. Love the bike, love Zero... and believe me I am a gas motor gearhead. -CCitis from the forum
Great Video Baldy. I once owned a 2017 Zero DSR for 3 months. I love riding it all over the place, even from Cincinnati to Barber Motorsports Speedway for the Vintage Weekend, I believe it was in September. My Zero was Toast, when a lady rear ended me on a highway exit ramp, as I was sitting at a Red light. I miss riding it Soo Much. I ride a BMW F700GS now & just completed my first MABDR trip, a few weeks ago with Piston Society.
Zero makes the most well put together electric motorcycles. I just wish they had DC fast charging option. If a bike gives you 100 miles range in about 45 minutes, range won't really be an issue in long rides.
I used to love driving around on my motorbike...but switching off the engine at the end of a ride always felt like such a tremendous relief...an almost silent motorbike is sure a dream of mine.
These kind of bikes only get better each year, talking charging speeds and range. Handling, braking and build quality are already at levels we know from industry staples. Prices will likely take a while to get more affordable. Never hearda yous, but this test review was fun and lively, man. Great variety of activities in a concise video, great "cast", top quality!
*ZERO*= Phenomenal for the current technology! With battery and energy source improvements, the future is very bright indeed! Thanks for a great review! Including comments from friends and family helped as well. (BTW I'm 72...LOL)
Thanks for the down to earth review. My work tested one (sans luggage) and it is a hoot. Roosts on demand. Lots of power. Quiet. Only complaint was the screen did not provide enough wind coverage for me (6’4”) nor the other test rider (6’0”). Anything over about 45mph blasted us. Other than that we liked it and hope the company buys one.
Just came across your channel. Love seeing more "seasoned" riders like your selves (as opposed to some more aggressive riders reviews focused on all out performance) reviewing and enjoying bikes out on the road. Most certainly a great review, but you two are a also just blast to watch. Knowingly or not, you put smiles on a lot of faces. Keep making great content!
I had a DSR + Power Tank for a short time. I demo'ed the DSR without Charge or Power tank, then ordered one with the Power Tank. Upon getting the bike, I immediately regretted that. Don't get the Power Tank, it makes the bike so top heavy that it isn't as fun to ride, plus it doesn't go that much farther, maybe 30 miles and you lose quick charging. You might check out the FX or FXS models. I personally prefer those to the SR/DSR bikes. None of the Zero bikes can go very far, so might as well have one that is fun to ride a short distance. The FXS is a hoot to ride around town. Like a REALLY fast mountain bike.
Thanks for the info on that. That wouldn’t have crossed my mind in adding to the weight of the bike. I guess my next question would be, if you found it too top heavy, could you have it removed? I’m a bit unfamiliar as to how the bikes are put together from basic to extras.
Pretty sweet! About the only thing electric needs to solve is distance but I'm sure that's coming. There are also third parties looking at and developing better chargers. I was curios about the belt drive. As you know, there are more than a few bikes equipped with belts and they do quite well. The biggest deal seems to come toward the end of life. Unlike a chain, once it starts to lose the teeth, it begins to come apart quickly as the belt slips which causes the next tooth to slam into the drive pulley. Based on my experience, belts are recommended for replacement between 24-40 thousand miles but often last much longer, like 60k. The primary reason for waiting has more to do with cost than anything. Great review.
Oh man this video was great. I couldn't ride the DSR because I'm unfortunately vertically challenged at 5'7" on a good day, but I'm seriously considering electric for my next bike. If the new FXE had a bigger battery or faster charging I'd buy one tomorrow.
Haha. You'd have been doing laps around that school parking lot all night. That bike will go a dozen miles on backroads after 0%, and at least 5-10 miles past 0% and 0 miles range. First hitting 0% shows 5-8 miles range left, so you'd get those miles then maybe 5-10 more. I also wish the Zeros had more regen braking, but I think that's the most they can have without needing the brake light to flash on deceleration One of my favorite things about my Zero is being able to have conversations while riding side by side with other Zeros. You and your wife must've enjoyed many quiet conversations while ninja-slicing through the mountains
We don’t either and yet we have a Tesla dealership about 3 miles down the road. I’m sure they will begin to install charging stations but DC has tons of them.
I liked your neighbor with his bicycle helmet and he also has beemer motorcycle. I work so much and when I'm not, I don't know if I want to cycle or ride. 1st world problems, haha.
It's getting there but it's not there yet. There's a whole range / rate / charge speed / price balance to strike and it hasn't been struck yet. Cars are there now (and getting better every year). But the motorcycle manufacturers need to keep at it.
Wonderful bike but it‘s not made for touring. I‘ve really tried to make a go of it with my Black Forest but after multiple trips where I couldn‘t find a functioning charger, endless hours of waiting to get enough juice to ride home, I‘m going back to ICE. I‘m trading my DSR for a Triumph Tiger 850. I‘ll miss the Zero, but if you want to tour you need something else. Great second bike or commuter bike, but tough to live with if you want to go far.
Ooooo, the TAT!! You know, I love this bike and can't think of one I'd rather ride on that trip, but...worrying about my next charge every 100 miles bugged me. I dunno how many level 2 chargers there are along the route. When I got to Alice's Restaurant, I was hoping they had a charger there, but no. They had a hydrogen filling station, but no charger. And it's in the land of Teslas.
Great video, Baldy! But please get a camera mount so you don't need to do the handheld camera while on the street. I know it's doable but it only takes one second of distraction and that might be the end.
2017 I bought a BMW R9T that the fuel range is all over the map (no fuel gauge just a warning when you get low) that gives me anxiety when I do trips so I think this type of bike I would only consider for city.
Toni mentioned it being heavy. Is the electric bike revolution going to be a problem for smaller/younger men or woman due to the minimum weight requirements for a long range battery pack?
Good question. She's 5'6" and was on her toes, giving her less leverage because the bike is fairly tall. She wants a 350cc-class machine and this is more like 650ish.
Don’t you know, they don’t build motorcycles for us short people - only for the 6 footers !!! It drives me nuts because I’m in that boat around 5 foot 6 inches or more like 5 foot 5 inches since I’m over 50 and starting to shrink. Well looks like I’ll be looking at the basic DSR instead. Bummer..
Sorry, I know this is older, but I hope you guys still keep an eye on the comments. I'm starting to look into electric vehicles as a commuter machine and something I found very off putting about Tesla was the cars being capable of doing something like faster charging or higher performance, but that capability being guarded behind a paywall. Does Zero have similar practices?
Another GREAT review! For me....this is THE VERY BEST REASON that I can think of.....why ELECTRIC anything WILL NOT EVER WORK. In California maybe.......but NOWHERE else. Range? WHAT RANGE????
I really don't understand why a 2020 bike has incandescent light bulbs instead of LEDs. Especially an electric bike where every watt saved means more riding, less charging. I only guess it has to do with Zero being small company. Probably they have to scavenge leftover old stock parts from big manufacturers in order to keep the final product price kind of reasonable and still make a profit. What do you think ?
SO looking forward to the solid-state batteries to come out, replacing the current ones... If the specs hold true, bikes like this one, will double or triple their range and almost double their charge rates. Then I can see getting into electric vehicles. I just can't justify the purchase of one, with the range limitations that they have right now
Old review but I just bought a 23' DSR 14.4 yesterday, are they supposed to be really noisy at at slow speed acceleration? Mine rolls quietly and only makes a howling sound under acceleration, I have checked alignment and tension, it's almost ear piercing riding at slow speeds with no helmet. Actually, I missed the part on the video where you were accelerating at slow speeds, I guess they are pretty loud in this area. Oh, I had an Alta Redshift, it was pretty awesome.
Wow i wish I could have gotten the San Francisco sales team on the phone. I purchased my Zero from BMW Santa Rosa no fanfare no bells no whistles just an overpriced $12000 otd for a 2021 FX
Did you not pay for the fast charger on the bike or did your bike only have the basic charger on it? I’m looking into this bike as I would like to do some short trips once I retire. However, at 5 foot 5 inches and 171 pounds, I’m wondering if I can handle it. I’ve been driving motor bikes for 35 years - have had everything from an 1981 Honda 400 to a Honda Superhawk, BMW 1200 and BMW 750GS. The Kawasaki Versys was the highest sitting bike at 33 inches and tough to maneuver even in my garage. You at 6/4 make it sound like it’s a matchbox so it’s difficult to guess how some of us women would make out with this bike. If I’m gonna spend the money on electric, I want something that has luggage. The basic DSR looks as though there is no optional luggage or wind screens which bums me out. I may end up going back to gas if I can handle the weight of the bike. Thanks for the review - yeah, If I was over 6 foot, I would surely buy this mother.
The EV-go station at Walgreens wasn't "in the best neighborhood" really? Overall though great review, but please try and understand where normal folks live.
two things in comparison to my vstrom... the seat is lacking, and the suspension is pretty bad, also the price is steep, I've got the time, so I'll wait for better technology and also a price more in line with my bracket.
The big issue about Zero DSR, this is not with dust roads. If I drop an electric motorcycle in deep water, is it scrap after? I can do something with a motocross in a similar situation.
The batteries are sealed very well. Has the same or less electrical connections as a gas bike so you're honestly better off. No flooding the motor, leaking gas or anything.
75 basically halves the range from 35. Gas bikes see the same increase in energy use but their idle is so wasteful to begin with you don't notice it. The 14.4 kwh battery is like having less than a half gallon of gasoline in energy!
Most of the comments seem to be about the reviewer. I'm all in for EVs but there's something to be said for looks. This just looks like another Japanese motorcycle.
I think our society has a tuff guy motorcycle problem. Many people in america could make use of ev bikes, if the image didnt scare them off. The rest of the world uses motorcycles for everything.

It is very interesting to see a review from an older dudes perspective.
it's crazy he lives on the same street as larry david
This is about as good as a motorcycle review can get; very well done!
I love how authentic and fun you and Toni are together, Baldy! You guys were made for TH-cam! More videos please!
Toni & Fred from Zero we're the surprise guest stars weren't they :)
You're lovely people and this was a nice real life review. An improve on batteries/range and the quite electric future will be such a joy.

A very organic and natural review. I found this thoroughly enjoyable to listen to in a way that many motorcycle reviews are not
Thanks!

OMG, I'm obsessed with this bike.....

Great review! Not the bike for me but great review.
One of the best bike reviews ever, and a sweet bike. Thanks!
Unfortunately I don't want to know what the price in EV-backward Australia would be.
This was great, Thanks! It might be a little heavy Momma, but I might try it👍🏾

Good stuff!
Does it come with a charger for it

You didn't make a glaringly obvious bias review on your highly subscribed TH-cam channel. No surprise there!
Got mine in March but no toolkit :D
How much does it cost to charge it from 0 to 100%?

Will definitely get more range with lighter, more aerodynamic luggage
There's no charging units at all where I live. Home would be the only place to charge.
I don't get these guys who say they would miss the sound of a gas bike. Why would anyone miss all that racket?

Battery efficiency drops dramatically in freezing conditions.
"Extensable"???
You shouldn't use a battery that much empty, beacuse it might pass it's limit of voltage and decrease its life A LOT

That cahrger is SLOW. They really need to make that better. Roughly 1hr for 60%?? The range is already too low, that charging speed is way too slow.
I looked into these very cool for the road but
I’m not interested in anything that weighs over 400 lbs
seems like a guessing game between charges.
