  • I made a chess board for a friend recently and decided to make a second one with the leftovers. Here is how I built a regulation sized end-grain chess board out of black walnut and ash.

    This is beautiful...endgrain has depth and your techniques are flawless...like using a glue that allows the wood to expend and contract. I wish I had known that before.

      What happens if you dont? (Use wood expanding glue)

    FYI, set up the chess board with a white square in the right corner. You set it up sideways, and yes, it makes a big difference.

    love that u can see the grain, u don't see that alot... since u have experience, would it be a good idea if I wanted to use a long metal wire, heat it up and use it to burn in and separate all the individual squares?

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So are you saying you would just have one big board and use the wire burning method to make the grid pattern? I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work.

  • @PEZ4949
    @PEZ4949 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice job. I would suggest that your frame should have been end grain as well; the two opposing forces (end grain top, face grain frame) are likely to cause issues over time.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's a good point. To account for that, I have a good 1/8 inch of space all the way around between the two pieces, and then I used a really elastic adhesive to join them together. So any wood movement has a place to go and shouldn't brake the glue.

      Haha, thanks for the heads up. My wife and I actually looked up how to set them up because it's been a long time since I played and I didn't want to look dumb. I didn't realize there was actually a front and back to a chess board.

    • @RSWarriorLuv2LafMcc
      @RSWarriorLuv2LafMcc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gunflint Designs lol...I here ya! it's a little pet peeve of mine in TV and movies to see if they set up the board properly. most set the pieces in the correct sequence on the board, but have the board turned 1/4. this isn't a chess video, it's a wood working video, and u rocked it!

  • @3lpancho657
    @3lpancho657 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can imagine two people who think they are Gods and are at a stale mate. They are trying to make pieces disappear but little by little the peices all become kings and queens but different. Then you start hearing music. Then you start seeing color. Its getting louder and more vivid. Then the chess board starts making music. The party has just begun. We are gonna make it fun for everyone. I have a vision where we can live in a way that leads to life not death.

    Looks really nice. I love how the board is raised a bit from the base. Question... Does the wood glue really bind the pieces together well after 3 coats of lacquer?

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the wood glue gets to fully dry before coating it in lacquer then everything holds together well.

    • @BronkBuilt
      @BronkBuilt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the reply. I meant your last glue up when gluing the board to the base in the 4 corners with expandable glue. It looked like that was gluing all sections that already had multiple coats of lacquer.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I see what you're saying... I don't honestly know since I've only made two of these and they were pretty recently. So only time will tell. But I can tell you that I don't have any concern about it. The lacquer should be well bonded to the boards and the flexible glue just needs to keep them from separating. These things should never really see any abuse, so I don't think they will just fall apart.

    This looks great! What kind of tung oil did you use? I'm a beginner at finishing wood, and thinking about trying this for my next project and I'd like it to look similar to this. Also, did you start with turning blanks? It's hard to tell in the video how big your squares are, but I'm guessing 2" or 1 3/4" ? Not having any luck finding local suppliers who carry walnut and ash blanks, so maybe you have a recommendation for an online supplier?

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe I used Homer Formby's tung oil on that one. Each square is 2x2, for an overall playing surface of 16x16. I actually have a small hobby tree farm in my family, so I get all of my lumber straight from the tree. th-cam.com/video/smBRsF9NTAI/w-d-xo.html
      I'm afraid I'm not a great source for information on where to get lumber.

    Hi What thickness did you end up with? the thickness doesn't have to match the square width does it?

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember for sure, so I'll take some guesses. The frame is probably 5/8 thick, and the board is probably 1" or more. Since the board sits into the frame half-way, we are probably talking about 1 to 1-1/4 overall thickness.

    Seen bunch of these videos before I start to built a chess board for myself. Is it recommended to use the auto clear coat over the wood chess board?

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what auto clear coat is? I used lacquer, which is easy to work with and dries pretty hard, so it should be durable enough to stand up to years of chess pieces sliding across it.

    will an end-grain board not collapse if the wood expands or or shrinks? or does it depend on the dryness of the wood as well as the wood species? I am going to build a board myself and am deciding if just to follow the grain.

    • @GunflintDesigns
      @GunflintDesigns  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You definitely want the wood to be dry. Technically, this style should be stronger because everything is glued edge grain to edge grain. If you go the other direction, you end up with lots of end grain to end grain joints, which isn't very strong.

    Its very nice and an interesting process. I'm not crazy about the void on the bottom of the board or the stamp on the squares. Chess players, like myself, will be very particular about their chess sets and will want them to the board to resemble a minimalistic style. Meaning perfectly smooth on top and bottom with no distractions on the board. The board I have for example can be flipped and used on both sides. The stamp and the awkward negative space in the bottom of the board here would make it well... awkward. Otherwise, solid piece of work. I would not turn away the board if someone gave it to me. The glass piece set also looks very interesting and its why I clicked on the video.

    • @GunflintDesigns

    It's a really nice job and some good workmanship. A couple of areas to improve:
    1) I prefer a 45 degree mitre angle for joining the frame, I think that would have looked a bit nicer with better symmetry.
    2) I prefer the frame to be the same level as the board, ie don't raise the board up above the frame, so the frame is more a border. Personal preference though.
    3) Your pieces are a little large for the board so it looks a touch a cramped. I like the glass vs timber contrast though.
    4) As others have said, you always setup a chess board with "white (square) on the right" so your Queen sits on her own colour and king-side castling is short not long. Yes it makes a difference.
    Thanks for sharing.

    I don't understand why people use multiple pieces of wood. Wouldn't it be easier to just use one and stain the pattern on?

    I love the board, but does it drive anyone else crazy when people don't set the pieces up right?

      I'm not a chess player, I'm just a builder. I had no idea there was a right and wrong way, but I've had several people point it out to me thanks to this video. I won't make that mistake again.

      @@GunflintDesigns don't worry yourself both pieces could be played as white in a way, as they are glass I see no black pieces. Some chess fans just love being really anal
