Hey Chris, little thing I think would make this set a lot better: you can drill a shallow hole at the bottom of each piece and add a metal piece to make the pieces weighted.
Love the video and the chess set. My 6 year old says he knows this will be his "next" project, though I'll let you know, it'd be his first. He was really inspired by this build.
I love the stylized pieces. Instantly recognizable as exactly which ones they are but not over designed. I wish I could buy them somewhere they would go well with most any board.

@@PaweKrajewski I completely agree! The challenge of trying something new, is one of the best parts. I used Walnut and Maple for mine since that combo has a lot of contrast, but I'm sure some other wood types would look great together, as well.

It's a beautiful work, but as a chess player I've always had troubles "adapting" to these modern pieces shapes. The board in itself and the compartment for the pieces is AWESOME ! But more "classical type" pieces would have been my personal choice for sure.

There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. Pretty clever to make the pieces with the table saw. I like using the pencil to hold those small parts, I am going to adopt that technique. Nice video thanks.

As a chess player, I can tell you that there are a few things I would add to make it a custom made chess board. ie; Both sides should have a design where you can put the pieces taken as you play along, may be like a qtr inch carved section on both sides to place the pieces taken while playing along. While making it somewhat carry able, the bigger the better. Each piece should have a rather heavy weight to its bottom as to maintain the piece not easy to be knocked down. I am sure it will be sold.!!!

Thanks William! Yeah, I thought about veneering the other side, but honestly it came down to laziness and time constraints. I did finish both sides, and it is going to a friend, so if it goes wonky on him, I can always fix it.

The "i" suffix is generally only used for loan words from certain languages - Octopus is one example; the word being originally from Greek, the plural would normally be octopodes, but so many people use "octopi" instead that it's become the widely accepted as a correct pluralization. However, for the sake of simplicity, it's also acceptable to simply say "octopuses" and be done with it. English is full of crap like that, which is part of the original joke. People get confused about pluralization all the time. I'm a native English speaker, and I'll be the first to tell you it's terrible. Which is part of why many people who study it take a "descriptive" approach rather than a "prescriptive" one. This board and pieces are bad ass. My only comment, and I do so in aim of improving your chess set-- I'll be those pieces are tippy as hell! Somehow incorporate a counterweight to the bottom of each of the pieces to help them not to fall over and ruin a game. "Where was this piece? Where did that piece go? Oh darn it!"
