I made a nice chessboard in jr. high. Was coming out pretty good. Until I ran it through the planer.
Spent the next month or two sanding it down to compensate foe the chips that were ripped out by the planer. Not so sure I'd use the planer again after glue up. 50 years ago and I still remember how much it sucked but I had to just keep going with it until I finished it. Life lesson right there.

It's beautiful. When you make chess-sets, you should always make an extra queen in case of pawn promotion. Failing that you should make it possible for the pawns to stand on their head - so dead pawns can be used as extra queens instead.

Excellent work. First, thanks for not making the finish super glossy. More woodworkers make the mistake, especially on their first board, of thinking shiny = good. Second, the chess piece cubbies needed to be made a little bigger. I would want a 4.5 inch King to fit... and the pawns should lay flat. I would have knocked them out and started over because I would not have been satisfied with bare wood. I know you're a wood worker and proud of the wood... but the better boxes for pieces are lined with felt as are the bottoms of the weighted pieces. ...also I would have tacked in silk ribbon on each cubbie to pull the pieces up. You have more tools than I have space to put tools. Yeah, I'm a little jealous.. Thanks for posting this; the music was relaxing.. as was your calm narration.

A nice board though I must admit I was a little exhausted watching. I made a folding wood board with a compartment for some pre-made plastic pieces about 18 years ago and now that I've gotten into 3D printing, I've been designing the pieces as well as a modular board that fits together like a puzzle. So having this video on made for good background noise though admittedly I couldn't help but watch now and then. It hurts my soul a little to find that after all that work, the pieces didn't quite fit into the slots. That happened with my first board. I had to shorten the bases of the pieces to get them to fit and even after that, it was a and is a process to put them away. I suppose in retrospect, having them all snug in a 45 degrees would have been a nice touch. Would you make it again?
