Yes those parts were rabeted prior to being put on. The footage was way out of focus so it didn’t turn out. Watch Jay Bates chess video and you will see a better process of that step.
@@CReevesMakes I can imagine! I'm jogging through the steps figuring out how I'd have to sub a few tools out like a drum sander but I'd sure like to try one some day. Thanks again!
That is a resaw fence Todd. Its a fine tuned way to get a nice straight cut and compensate for blade drift while cutting thicker stock. Thanks for watching!
@@CReevesMakes thanks! Did you get that piece from kreg or was that an addition you did? The reason I'm asking is I just purchased a used band saw that came with that kreg fence installed but I dont have that vertical piece that you do.
What a lovely job,I'm aiming to make myself one.Love the Hollywood idea.do you have plans available as in not that great when trying to make up a plan for these things?
Question: after you frame the board/plywood -- how do you make the thickness of the frame lower -- so the whole height of the chessboard + frame doesn't need to fit in the groove in the box? I've watched this video & Jay Bates one, and am not seeing this step -- any explanation would be much appreciated! Hoping to make this as a gift for Christmas this year. Thanks for the video!
Hey Tim! Good question and it was quite the learning process. Basically in the end, I cut the sides as rabet cuts on my table saw but you can also use a router table or router with an edge guide. Email me and I will see if I have old pics of the project that illustrates this step. Creevesmakes@gmail.com
Can you please tell me, have you checked how bloodwood works with ash and walnut in terms of thermal expansion coefficients? What is the risk that these types of wood are not friendly with each other, resulting in cracking, swelling, or splitting? Also, what if I wanted to make the board wood-block end to top to make the wood structure more fancy - would gluing them be any different?
You always have to wonder about wood movement but the panel is cut very thin (less than 1/4") and glued to plywood. So, the individual squares COULD move but I doubt it. Also, if its kept indoors in a temperature controlled area it should help. The only factor could be high moisture.
Nice job and love the idea of taping the backside of the glue joints on the board glue up!
Thanks! It’s the little tricks you learn along the way! 👍🏻
I love the inlay between the light and dark squares
Thank you very much! That’s bloodwood
Just wow! Your craftmanship is inspiring! Beautiful piece of work!
Gorgeous! Love that bloodwood
Thanks Drew! It’s such a great combo!
Amazing precision. Fantastic.
Thank you very much! A daunting task but worth the stress. Thanks for watching
One of the best chess boards on you tube, and I've seen a lot😊
Thanks! I really appreciate that!
Man, that is a beautiful piece. Great work, Casey. Wow.
Thank you very much Mark!👍🏻👍🏻
Beautiful design and workmanship. Congratulations!!
Thank you very much! I appreciate it Claude! Thanks for watching
Like it. The bloodwood really adds a ton to it. Great work.
thanks 🙏🏻
After you glued the walnut border to the board, did you rabbet that with a dado stack? At 7:25. Video doesn't show that step.
Yes those parts were rabeted prior to being put on. The footage was way out of focus so it didn’t turn out. Watch Jay Bates chess video and you will see a better process of that step.
@CReeves Makes thanks for the guidance! Wanted to send you a picture of how mine turned out but can't figure out how to do it in TH-cam.
The best project for a chessboard!
Thank you very much! 👍🏻
Brilliant, that's one of the better looking chessboard vIdeosI believe I have watched, just beautiful, love your attention to the finer details!
That 90 degree flat clamping jig is a brilliant solution!
Thanks Mike! Yeah I was wondering how I would keep everything as aligned as possible and just whipped that up. Worked great! Thanks for watching!👍🏻😎
The clamping jig is genius. I’m making a similar board based on ur design and wish I would’ve done this. Amazing work and thx for sharing this.
Very nice, precision and nice choice of wood
Thank you very much! I love the contrast and colors
Great work. Love the design.
Rapaz vc é o melhor que já vi.... show 🙌💯👏
Lovely piece
Thank you very much
absolutely beautiful
Thanks for watching! 👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent video - watching you make that was a joy. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! I truly appreciate that!
Beautiful job. I learned some great ideas on how to use tape during glue up.
Thanks! Tape is often the best clamp for small pieces! 👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely brilliant build, and alot can be learnt from this. Thank you
Thanks for watching Christopher! I appreciate it!!👍🏻
Gosh that turned out amazing!

Thank you very much and thanks for watching!
That looks awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thank YOU for watching! I appreciate it!
im curious what that extra plate you use on your kreg band saw fence and why? 0:40

It’s a Kreg product. They offer a short one and a tall one. It will fit right onto the Kreg fence.
@@CReevesMakes thank you so much. I'm new to all this band saw business!
Wonderful!!

Beautiful piece!
Thank you very much! It was definitely a skills challenge but I learned a lot with it and love how it turned out! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful Build...Is it possible to get a plan, would greatly appreciate it.
gorgeous!
Thank you very much! 🙏🏻👍🏻
Amazing as usual!

Great work, man👍👍 best diy chessboard I’ve ever seen.greetings from Ukraine 🇺🇦
Thank you very very much! 🙏🏻
nicely done!

Thank you very much Rich!
Like how big everything is
Thanks!
beautiful.
Wonderful board!! I just started making a couple cheeseboards. Can I ask, why do people mount the cheeseboard to plywood?
The plywood is a stable and flat base. It minimizes the amount of work and thickness on the actual chess board part.
Amazing! I learned a lot from this.
👍🏻😎👍🏻Awesome! Thanks for letting me know! Glad you enjoyed it

Beautiful. Did you apply finish to the storage grid before assembly?
Yes I did. Thanks!
@@CReevesMakes is the grid just friction fit?
Yes pretty much. Just enough to stay out. No glue or anything.

Whats the name of the tool in 1:14
That’s a 16-32 drum sander! I love this thing!
Do you have to worry about wood movement in something like this?

what is the final height of the board?
I think it was around 3-1/2" to the playing deck.
beautiful. how much is something like this worth?
Thanks! Oh I have no idea. This one was a gift but with all the material and hours it would be well over $500
What were the dimensions of the ash, walnut and bloodwood?
Hey there DavidZ. Each square is 2” total squareness. That includes the bloodwood.
How do you make the edges on the board itself so it slides into the box?
There is a dado groove around the sides of the box and then the board itself has a rabbet cut on it. The rabbet slides into the groove.
How did they like it? I thought I remembered you said it was a gift.
They loved it! I’m just glad it made it out to the east coast in one piece! 😆 Thanks!
Como fazer para comprar?
How can I buy this?
This one was a gift. You can email me at creevesmakes@gmail.com
Can you plz show the steps
Love that blood wood! Beautiful!. Can you make me one? ;-)
Beautiful i wish sameone to give me a chessboard
👍👍👌
Thanks!👍🏻👍🏻
How much would you charge for that?
Nice work. Thanks for not narrating/talking through the whole thing. That can be very irritating.
The constant music is worse.
I did it with the Woodbex plans.
Boring with no voice over
Thanks for the feedback.
I like the more or less silent video in this instance. After all, he explained things in the beginning. Sometimes less is more.
