    I didn't realize you were keeping with a "schedule"! of all things! But, you don't actually have a very big window of opportunity to do your kind of adventuring; only one very short season before it becomes almost impossible. And, wow, what you guys are showing me is just gorgeous! Thank you. Maybe some day you'll be able to enjoy it more. :-)

      Thanks Jim. The weather, along with visa issues, does limit the amount of time we had to spend in this majestic area. But we're so fortunate that we were able to get here, and spend more time than the average tourist anyway. How can we complain? :)

    My cat couldn't stop watching Georgie. He shouldn't go outside, because he just isn't that bright, but Georgie running around had him going. I've also got to say, I think this was the best scenery I've seen yet produced by a sailing channel.. Believe me that is saying something as I watch a lot of sailing channels.

    Norway is undoubtedly on my bucket list now. How insanely gorgeous a landscape! Kind of wish we'd been able to see more of the towns and interaction with locals, but the photography/filmography was stunning! Thanks for sharing M&J, much appreciated.

      We usually let her roam on deck by herself, but the fear of a bird taking her away put an end to that while we were North.

    It looked like Georgie was having a great time exploring those rocks. It's a shame she couldn't satisfy her hunting instincts on this excursion. I can't believe how she goes on hikes with y'all without running off and getting lost! What a GREAT kitty!!! Most likely the last ice age. Somewhere between 1.8 million and 12,000 years ago. Glaciers carved the steep-sided valleys and the fjords. Is a fjord just a drowned, steep-sided valley?

    Wow, 1500 steps. Anyone would be exhausted. There is a staircase of 200 steps up to the hill community where I live in California. Health groups and individuals come to use them for workouts and most of them are exhausted. You two did more than 7 times as much as them. So I don't care who passed you...you guys rock (get it, climbed rocks)! Yeh sorry.
    Good for you, carrying back the trash.

    So you touched on something in your video that I have done too and that is looking at Google earth to see shallows when sailing and the sun is just in the wrong place to see well. Don't ask how I learned not to trust it for sand bar locations since they shift!
    This brings me to wonder why not launch the drone to see the area around you when choosing a place to explore or hike. I can see the issue with being underway but why now when you are on the hook?

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are wonderful tools to download the google maps ahead of time and display on OpenCPN chartviewer. Unfortunately it take internet data I don't usually have available. But Norway is so connected with cell coverage, we used google sat for every anchorage and passage we took in the country. It's a pretty amazing tool.
      The drone would be a great additional tool to scout ahead. But we usually are trying to conserve the batteries for filming and don't want to "waste" them on a mapping adventure. It's keeping up with the charging in these areas where solar doesn't do a great job.
      We also struggle to fly the drone off the boat... some people do it well, but we just have so many lines and rigging in the way that we have to be stopped to make it work.

    been meaning to ask... How is the little diesel hot air heater working out? I am almost ready to get one for my greenhouse, but I wondered how long it might last. Thanks for all the videos!

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm still impressed with this little guy. We've had to clean soot out of it once, but I think that was due to an install issue we had, and not the heater itself. I ran a tank out of fuel on purpose so I could permanently switch the heaters draw to another tank. After I did this, I was getting air in the lines, and I over feed diesel into the heater trying to get it running (and search for the air leak). It ran for a day with a lot of smoke, but then stopped and needed to be cleaned out to restart.
      The only other issue I've had is when at a dock and the wind is blowing really hard from the stern, it wasn't able to compensate for the wind going right up the exhaust and blew itself out. I put a piece of metal over the exhaust to act as a wind diverter and it fired right back up.
      Matt

    • @gwoiler
      @gwoiler 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattjohnson6716 Thanks for this! Yeah... I was wondering over time if the burner would soot up and how to clean it if it was even cleanable? They make one a little bigger in a case that is self contained to use as a stand alone heater. A bit more money, but it also includes the fuel tank in the case. My greenhouse is small and a little heat source to extend the growing season would be nice. Thanks for answering my question! I am guessing you are no longer up north where you shot these videos?

    As always...Jess is gorgeous! Uh ummm ahhhh I mean Norway! lol. Wow, this is so beautiful, this has to be one of my fav spots you've been so far.
    What is sad about this is; You can see 25-30' to the bottom of the sea, go to shore & the only garbage you see is a not very old boat bumper...Then go to the waters of India & you can't see 25" through the human waste and man made garbage that makes the water look like a pot of chili...Go to Panama/Carribean & the shores are filled with so much man made garbage you couldn't possibly collect it all. That's what is sad about this.
    *Cut to the old tv commercial where the Indian is standing just outside his forest, next to a highway littered with trash & a tear rolls down his cheek.

      Unfortunately, we've found any windward side of an island that is exposed to the Atlantic has trash all over. We found more plastic combs and those knock-off croc sandals in the Bahamas than you can believe... and I'm sure we'd find it up here too. It's usually not a local problem, but from much further away that drifts with the currents and winds into these beautiful areas. It's horrible.
      Now Indian and the rest of Asia is different and locally caused. But, we saw a lot of recycling going on in Thailand, so it seems they are learning. -Matt

    How do y'all find those spots to anchor, and know where you can go walking/hiking and exploring...such as public lands?

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We use Navionics for our charts, which show places around us we can anchor. For this particular hike, I had searched it on Google, but sometimes we use our MAPS.ME app or sometimes we just land the dinghy and walk...seeing if we come across any paths on our way.

      It is just as that in Alpine countries as well. It makes some of the trails possible as private land with zero trespass access in the states would make it impossible. In Europe people have learned to live with boundaries and share the land to a small extent at the same time.

      @@danielbuckner2167 We found out Scotland is the same after we missed out on a few sites that were behind fences. Apparently you're just suppose to open the gate and let yourself in. Pretty cool right of passage.

    • @danielbuckner2167
      @danielbuckner2167 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly is and I think having some access to places gives people a sense it is part "theirs" as well and incites a small amount of respect and care for a site. In the UK and on the Iberian PN I recall being told "Never jump a fence or gate! Especially if there sheep nearby, they don't know they can jump the little stone walls." That and always leave a gate open if you find it that way and the same for a closed gate. Making someone go round up livestock is not a good way to win over farmers! I'm sure you guys knew that from growing up in MI. Looking forward to the next vid!
