I got the same model just recently and it arrived to a nearby post office today. I brought it home and to my surprise, it's a "configure to order" model with a Zip drive.
It's actually 533, but what's a few megs here and there. That was my first tower Mac that I bought in June 2001 for a bargain clearance price of $3850. Disturbingly, I was partitioning the huge 40GB drive one night and reinstalling classic and OS X 10.0.3 when something weird started happening on the tv (it was taking a long time for the installs). A huge building in New York appeared to be on fire.
That's actually Druaga's model (or rather this one) due to the processor speed, he just misinterpreted it as a Sawtooth. Mine's the 733 MHz Digital Audio.
I just found your channel and I love it man! Cool to see that in this age with all this cool new shit coming around, there's still guys like you playing around with the old hardware and remembering how it used to be.
This will always remind me of the aesthetic turn apple took when I was in about.. 6th to 7th grade through 9th (which was 01-02 I think).. forman school , boarding high school i went to had like 5 of these in the upstairs area of the really old theater building, in the lighting control room which was huge so was that and a computer lab.. well relatively big for a lighting room/booth.. so yea anyway, really think apple did a smart thing by getting so awesome looking hardware and software wise..
Hi Druaga1, I have a couple of circa 1999 G4 Macs, I did some mods to one of them so I could use it as part of a music production studio, one of the mods I did to it was to replace it's single 450Mhz CPU module with a Dual 500Mhz CPU module I bought on eBay, it certainly helped boost the performance of my G4, I also bought a set of four 512Mb SDRAM modules cause I had four ram slots on my motherboard to max-out the ram to 2Gb, and I upgraded the stock AGP graphics card to a 64Mb one, it seems to run pretty good, I'm running OS X Panther on it, there's a small app you can download that you can use to check if your G4's motherboard can accept, and support, Dual CPU modules, so there's a few tips for you, hope you find those useful to boost the performance of your G4.
I was Just Given a Sawtooth G4 400Mhz. PowerMac.. No HDD.. but found a 36Gig HDD in my Junk Collection... Downloaded the 4 Disk set of Install CD's off TPB. and Bingo its now Running 10.4.11.... ATI - Rage 128 sucks big time.... pretty sure i have a Decent PC card around somewhere. but just a mapper of Flashing it.... :) Fun times. Still quite impressed with the G4 its still quite Fast and usable for its age.
Look into the ATI Radeon 1000 series. They have AGP cards for PowerPC Macs. I have a 1600 lying around waiting to replace the Rage card once I purchase one of these bad boys.
i just got a graphite G4 on craigslist for $10 as is not working. got it working with in 5 minutes of fiddling with it. it came loaded with a clean install of OS 10.5 on a 60GB HDD + a clean 150GB HDD, 2GB(4x512mb), 64MB Radeon 9000 Pro and a dual 876MHz CPU
I LOVED my Power Mac G4. Started off with a 400MHz Sawtooth with the same Rage 128 Pro, 128MB of RAM, a 20GB Quantum HDD, DVD/RW and the optional Zip 100 drive. Eventually, I installed a dual 450MHz CPU along with a Rev. B logic board (my second CPU upgrade after installing a 7410 500MHz from a parted-out G4 Cube), as well as a 200GB Maxtor drive, 1GB of RAM, a Radeon 7500, and a quieter, Blue LED case fan. I also installed Leopard with an open firmware workaround. I have done a lot with this thing, and wanted to do even more, but this was back when Combo/Superdrives sold for more than what BluRay drives do today, so you can imagine the cost of other parts at the time.
I found a powermac g4 mdd right next to my dumpster and it was modded to have 1.75 or 2gb of ram and two hard drives one over 100gb other 70gb so I installed mac os 9.2.2 on it. Ya really weird finding a working mac that was kinda dirty.
You posted this just in time for me to become hooked on your channel. I miss this gear so much, I must have been 5 or 6 around the time of OS 9. I found you from your wingnuts video. Is it possible that you still have that working anywhere? I've been trying to get mine to work but because OSX doesn't support PowerPC anymore it's kinda hard.
I only had the demo of the game when I made the other video. I went ahead and bought a copy on eBay because I was curious to see if I could get it working on one of my older systems. I plan on making a video about it later on.
Hi there...okay so I am not really versed in computers and have never had a Mac before... I did however pick up this exact model at a thrift store earlier this morning... I hav ebeen trying to figure out what I need to connect it to a small Toshiba that I plan(ned?) on using as a monitor... I have been searching for the last two hours trying to find out how to get the two connected ... but I don't know what to do about the ADC port... the VGA was easy to set up but I can't figure out what kind of adapter is needed to connect the ADC to the back of the tv (which does have HDMI ports but thats it)... and all I seem to find are DVI /HDMI adapters.. errr soo after hours of following links and asking oddly worded questions on Google, I happened upon your video here and just decided to try to explain this to a person instead of a search engine so here we are .. any thoughts would be much appreciated!
You probably know as much as I do on this issue. I don't think there is any way to connect ADC directly to HDMI. You would have to go ADC -> DVI -> HDMI and I highly doubt that working. You're more likely to get ADC -> DVI or VGA -> HDMI working. Anything beyond that, I'm not sure at this point. I'll let you know if I learn anything.
Caden R Yeah I know that but I couldn't possibly change the resolution without logging in to the os with it working. Well now I've installed tiger and there are no such problems.
Caden R Well other monitors worked fine with mine. But if it doesn't work and you want access to the files though maybe you can take out its hard drive and plug it into another machine?
When Firefox is both up to date and completely behind, there is only one thing to do. Special > Shutdown Then go outside and scream, for the world has stopped making sense at this point.
My G4 always fails at booting into OS X. It just showsthe error message "disabled cell clock" and something about UniNEnet setToSleep. Can anybody help me?
Hi, I'm self-proclaimed Apple tech support. Can you reinstall OS X? Perhaps a different version than what it's supposed to be booting into? I would try that first. If a reinstallation doesn't work, I would then suggest booting into verbose mode (Command + V immediately after the chime) to see what exactly the computer can't handle. While booting into an OS X partition, of course. I'm here as long as you are. (Writing this from a G5.) ^_^
Thunder Cloud in the Last two weeks, my Problem changed a bit. The Computer can not find an os on the hard drive and it wont Boot from cd for some reason. Booting from usb is weird as os9 gets boot up completely and then says it has to be installed from cd and osx starts to boot and after 2 minutes it stops and the little classic mac/boot logo is broken/sliced in halfes. Have you any Suggestions what i should do to get any System booting? Ps: os9 and osx are installed (on one partition) but the mac cant find them. The only thing tgazs working is tge open firmware
+Tim Weber Can you specify what model G4 you have? iMac, Cube, Mini, Powerbook, Power Mac, etc. If it is a Power Mac, do you know if it's a "Yikes!", "Sawtooth", "Digital Audio", "Quicksilver", or "MDD"? The "Yikes!", "Sawtooth", and "Digital Audio" models all aesthetically appear almost identical to the Power Mac G3 (B&W), only they are all graphite instead of blue, and are missing the "G3" behind the Apple logo on the machine's side. The "Quicksilver" and "MDD" models are silver, and the "MDD" has a chrome square in the middle of its front. Never heard of the Happy Mac splitting in two... What happens when you attempt to boot from a CD? Have you tried holding down "c"? Or have you done it the "option" method, and enter an OS via the boot menu? If you have another post-1998 PPC Mac that works reliably, I would try removing the hard drive from this machine, and testing it in the working machine, although that could prove challenging if neither are Power Macs, in which case you could use online walkthroughs as guides. iFixit has some great ones. (Also, if your other working PPC Mac happens to be a G5, it will be unable to test the drive from the bad G4, since all models of G5 utilize Serial ATA (SATA), and (nearly) all models of G4 use Ultra ATA (IDE). So, you can't swap drives between a G4/G5 because they will have different internal data connectors, and different interfaces. But it is possible to test an IDE drive on a G5 through an external enclosure, through USB.) I suspect it may be a bad logic board, but I shouldn't jump to conclusions. We'll go from there.

Have to admit, I had the DV G4, with the built in Zip drive.
Oh, and Pac The Man … ?
STILL just about works in Mojave!
I got the same model just recently and it arrived to a nearby post office today. I brought it home and to my surprise, it's a "configure to order" model with a Zip drive.
still have my G4. It's the Digital Audio one. Dual 522 mhz processors!

You needed iTunes 9 to get iTunes Store access. You can still listen to the Radio in Tiger once you’re running iTunes 9.
What was the name of the music you used in the "Cliche, Overly Dramatic, Dubstep Hardware Montage Using Hipster Chicago Font?"
LOOL, man this video is insane! Ty for showing this old stuff, I really enjoy this
+Druaga1 you should give TenFourFox a try on your G4, its the only supported version of Firefox for PowerPC Macs running Tiger and Leopard.
I swear that sample file was the *only* file that Windows Media Player 7 for Mac would ever play.

That is -exactly- what I was thinking about when I did that XD

James Dalpiaz he said "codename" sawtooth
Digital Audio G4's used the same motherboard as Quicksilver's, so I don't think the Digital Audio models use the Sawtooth board.
