Hey man, I just wanted to say, before I watch, that I'm glad you're doing better now, and don't worry about anything, we'll be here whenever you need us
Zeb Karlsson if you watch Crazy kens video, he wanted an SSD from him, and from the whole video call, he tries to find ways to hang up from him. Also at The end, he says to not call again.
Can confirm that SCSI2SD is amazing. I have two for my Power Mac 8600 and Quadra 700. While it is pricey, it would be even more expensive and risky to get a mechanical SCSI of the equivalent drive size.
This channel is some of the only kino left on youtube. I realized it's one of the few left where I look forward to seeing a new video. It's still very reminiscent of classic youtube.
7:52 SCSI drives need to be manually assigned IDs via a series of pins that are usually on the bottom or back of the drive, and they require a "terminator" device at the end of the SCSI cable. Especially if you're using multiple devices on one chain. Failing to terminate the SCSI bus can result in all sorts of weird behavior, as without termination the signals running over the cable can actually reflect back at the end of it and cause interference. This can cause anything from drives simply not showing up, to full on system instability or failure to boot.
...Judging by what's listed on the other SCSI bus, your problem is that both of your hard drives are assigned ID 0. Which means you don't have any jumpers on any of them. Terminating the very last row of pins with a jumper _should_ put the drive on ID 1 instead, which would solve the problem.
This post is the one I was looking for before I weighed in… I used Macs in the 90’s and getting the SCSI IDs sorted correctly was a pain. Also getting them in the right position on the chain was a pain. If you change the ID on the one you cannot see and still cannot see it, change the ID back to what it was and change the ID on the one you can see how. It’s a black art…
How can i ever say thanks to druaga I've learned many things from him over the years and each video reminded me of the crazy stuff i do THANKS FOR EVERYTHING DRUAGA1 YOU ARE THE BEST
I love your videos. Your lack of knowledge, yet still plowing through the issues is very entertaining and frustrating at the same time, because you vocalize my thoughts when I was a noob to technology. Still a noob with mac and linux, so I'm right there with you on those videos.
I have a SCSI-IDE adapter or two. Whatever I have, it came with old systems I bought off of Ebay. I even have one old Power Mac using that plus a 3.5"-2.5" IDE adapter to use a laptop hard drive in it. Works great!
I'm glad you're feeling better to start posting videos again my man. I believe I speak for everyone when I say that we missed you and wish you nothing but the best!
Omg he's back hope everything is okay man take you're time I'll wait for you I've been hooked since the minecraft win 98 video thanks for the laughs, the videos that keep me interested in tech and thanks for the amazing video style actually showing things from start to finish. Thanks for everything
3 Fans.... I called it seconds before you did lol Thanks for sharing this whole endeavour with us :) Quantum lightning? I bet those go bad in a flash ;)
That PSU crackling problem is actually pretty common with those machines from what I can hear. Apple got those special AcBel power supplies mega cheap and now we know why. I have the same model (G4 MDD Fw400) and mine has not yet failed, but if you're looking for a video, maybe do one on how to replace it? I'd love to know how so I can do it on mine before the motherboard is damaged
I'm sure someone has already mentioned SCSI has 0-7 for IDs. Each device ID must be unique. Jumpers are usually next to the connectors. Also SCSI termination may need be set. Also, I have a drive which must be manually mounted. I still have FWB HardDisk Toolkit installed, which I use to mount and unmount.
This reminds me, I have to somehow image my Macintosh LC475 drive, one method I thought about was using a SCSI card in a pc, and use the MacDisk program to do it
i've seen a few people mention it already, but the sd2scsi is always an option also with the MDD, it's probably a bad power supply, its a common issue iirc
Are you familiar with SCSI IDs and how they work? It doesn't matter if you have a CD-ROM and a hard drive on the same cable, but it will matter very much if you have conflicting SCSI IDs. Those are set by jumpers on the drive, kind of like how you set master, slave or cable select on IDE and ATAPI drives.
Glad you're doing ok man Also, something that you might wanna be aware of regarding SSDs, data stored in flash memory degrades over time when unpowered, cheap NAND can start to lose its data after as little as 2 years unpowered. Personally I'd keep a copy of it all on modern hard drive as well for more long term storage. Or if you have an old LTO drive or something similar it might be a good use for it, would be very overkill but oh well.
Don't you just love all the jumper settings on SCSI drives? I had my first expierence with this not too long ago and felt the same way as you. "WTF is all this A0, A1, A2 stuff?"
Have you ever tried the Basilisk II emulator? It actually supports Mac II emulation with the right ROM, and you get to set all kinds of options, such as CPU type, RAM and screen resolution, AND it allows you to share a directory from the host system to the emulated Mac.
My Comment: SP3: For some reason TH-cam fixed whatever had broken on Opera 12.18 (IDK because the whole time TH-cam on modern browsers was fine) but it's been fixed so now I can make comments on win98 again. Oh, and this comment was made from win98.
Bro, You don't need to worry yourself about not uploading anything...You always put out GREAT videos and whenyou return everytime I always know its gonna be good
instead of risking old mac hardware rescuing drives I would suggest dumpster diving an old PC and a dirt cheap scsi card, then using linux and ddrescue to clone the drive to an image file, then copying the contents out of the image using an emulator like sheepshaver or basilisk - ddrescue is great because it has lots of control over how long it should try to read the data, it uses a strategy where it reads the easiest data first then goes back to bad sectors and tries a bunch more times to get the missing data
Hey dude if you need to take breaks like this, it's not my place to tell you not to. Above all else, your mental wellbeing is more important than whether I get to consume a video, please don't worry about it
A-Card make a SCSI to IDE bridge card. They are stupidly expensive now. You also have to be careful as some are only for use with CD-ROM drives and those will not work with a hard drive. There's always the various SCSI2SD boards that are available. Also not the cheapest, especially the v6 although that is a fair bit faster than the v5 and it's "knock-off" variants. The SCSI2SD boards often get used on Commodore Amigas.
I have found scsi ssds, but none of them are under 600 bucks, there is also a scsi to sata adapter (ACARD ARS-2000SUP), if you can find one and they dont cost an arm and a leg
"How hot does this drive get" Equal to or hotter than my WD Blue that I should PROBABLY replace since it's probably on the verge of failure. *ahem* "hey guys druaga1 here, today we're installing an SSD into the Dell Precision T1700"

your videos are so unique and heartful druaga, thank you for this.
His videos are NOT UNIQUE!
Just check out The Computer Clan channel

SCSI2SD is good to replace SCSI drives with and it can even emulate the "quirks" of apple SCSI drives.
Ubuntu reads and writes HFS drives fine.
I have several myself, the only downside is the price.

The Scsi2sd adapter is the closest I've found for a SCSI replacement. I've got one in my Macintosh SE.
You have a job at least. That's important in these difficult times.

They do have 50 pin SCSI to SD card and CF adapters, they are kind of prohibitively expensive though ~$100 USD.
I looked it up, iMac G5 replacement panels aren't that expensive. I wonder if you can get an even better panel to replace it.
A new Video !? And that on my birthday ! Thanks for making a boring day that I cant celebrate with my friends a lot better
Don't be mad about the G5. I had a G5 iSight fall from like 6 feet. Little bit more screen damage. Was still usable. Been since donated.
Welcome back, dude! Glad to see a new video from your channel.
Get a SCSI2SD, I use one as an HDD in my IBM PS/2 Model 95/A and it works great. Assuming the Macs use standard 50 pin SCSI.
