Rick, a couple of other points to improve the consistency of finished product. 1) Lock the white balance by either using a preset or manual setting. 2) Lock the automatic exposure, usually best done by putting the camera in manual mode. You will need to sweep your subject and check the exposure settings and find a good average setting. If you let the camera choose its own metering, it will invariably change throughout the sequence of exposures. 3) If you are using a more capable piece of software, such as Photoshop, shoot RAW if possible. The software can better correct for under and overexposure variances from the set of exposures, as well as clean up the vignetting that the Mavic camera seems to have.
Shooting in portrait is a great tip, since it requires less rows of images, often only one. Thanks for reminding me about that technique.
Here's one that I put together, note that I didn't lock the exposure on this one and the darker areas are sort of evident in a couple places:

Thanks a lot for the details and I'll try and apply them with my next panorama. To be honest, quad fliers come from two camps, they are either fliers that like to take pictures (better at flying) and photographers that like to fly (better at pictures). I'm the first animal and am still happy just to get a picture when I put the quad up, so I'm still learning and thirsty for knowledge on improving. I appreciate the advice and your support of the channel! Rick

Hi Rick; This is an absolutely fabulous video. I ordered my Mavic Pro this morning and then I found this video. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you providing us with the ability to stitch photos together right from your WebSite. Thank you Rick, and this is one of the reasons that your channel is one of the best of its kind on TH-cam today. You really do think of us when you make these videos. Thank you Rick.

Great video! Keep them coming. Your sense for thorough analytics and straightforward demeanor make your videos awesome. No theatrics; just the facts.
BTW, good catch on the portrait orientation for landscapes. In addition to obtaining a "deeper" image, the main reasons why we (the landscape photographers) take panoramics in portrait orientation is to reduce the amount of barrel distortion; an issue that is a lot more apparent on small, wide angle lenses such as that on the Mavic pro.

Rick, as always great videos and love your detailed articulate presentations of the varying topics you come up with on a regular basis. Another video I would like to see is your perspective on the issue of the Mavics picture sharpness. A number of folks have had the same issue we've been having since first getting our Mavic three month ago. That the edges of both the video and still photos seem soft This seems to be an inherent issue no matter how we refocus to center the lower right and upper left of the frame seems soft ever so slightly. Thank you!

After viewing this I wouldn't be surprised if DJI would incorporate this as an automatic feature in one of their next updates.
You could fly the Mavic to the height you want, select the portrait or horizontal mode and select the panorama mode to have the quad to start taking pictures as it turns in a degree circle.
Maybe someone at DJI will see this post and incorporate it in.

Hey Rick. I was on a trip to China earlier this month and happened to witness Dji's announcement for the Phantom 3 SE. It was meant for Chinese market exclusively. However, recently many online retailers start listing them in the store for pre-orders as well. Seems like P3 SE is indeed coming to NA and EU. It has 4km wifi(!!!) range, 4k camera, and VPS at the price tag of $500 USD. What impact do you think this will have on the market, and how will it effect current P3S owners and vendors with large quantity of P3S inventory?
Again thank you Rick for speaking out for us Canadian drone pilots! I really enjoyed your contents.

Thanks for the great info Rick! I have had my Mavic for a couple of months now and looking forward to some decent weather in the British Columbia Interior where we can get out there and fly (Dumb Canadian rules not withstanding). Would you be able to recommend a decent video-editing software that is relatively easy to use? My laptop came with Adobe Premiere Elements 10 but the tutorials seem to be hard to come by. Thanks again. Cheers!

I noticed that with this latest update, my Mavic wants to auto focus now where you used to have to touch the screen to get it to focus. Should I put it in manual focus while doing this??? Wish I had known this trick while I was in London 2 weeks ago, I did a 360 video, but this would have been MUCH better! Thanks for the tips :-)

Hey. I just ordered the Mavic to replace my Phantom 2 plus for roof inspections. Do the sensors assist in keeping me close enough to the ridge without bumping it or will they hinder my ability to get close crisp shots? ( i usually try to get within 4-5 feet for detail)

  • @kezzakat

Strange thing, first few times I did the 360 pano, I would hear the shutter release sound everytime it took a photo in the sequence. Now I no longer hear that, even though it still turns out. Why is this so? Is there a certain setting that may have been inadvertently changed?

  • @BassPlayerAvailable

So in THEORY we could have a 90 degree rotation available when filming (Maybe done by moving the 5D button)? I know this already kind of exists with increments with gimbal horizon adjustment, but this extra feature would also be cool to have.

Great tips Rick...love it. In trying to use your Panoramic stitching tool (www.dronevalley.com/panoramic-tool.html). The tool comes up but there is a blank white square where the 360 view or wide angle options should be. I'm using a MacBook Pro.Do you think this is the reason I can't get it to work?
I really love your videos, they have been very educational.
