The fact that even the mistakes in the show work out just shows how incredible ATLA is
Actually that episode is an entire forgotten time lapse, the river could not have been cleaned in a day, the montage suggests a few days passed, which I was ok with for the longest time, we were used to the gang traveling to a town and spending time there, and surely the production team was too, so why would this time be different?
Oh wait, Sokka did mention that they were on a very tight schedule at the start of the episode...

Or she could have met the Mother of Faces (Koh's mother) in the Forgetful Valley (probably where Koh stashed her) just like Ursa did. Upon seeing Ummi all faceless and alone, she took pity on the poor girl and made her a new face. This could also explain why Kuruk never found her because the Forgetful Valley can give you amnesia. She could have forgotten her old life taken on a new identity as The Painted Lady.

Actually the "amnesia" is the mother of faces wiping your memory if you wish to leave your past behind.
So, the painted lady was the fiance of the Previous water Avatar. And she appeared in front of the Waterbender who would eventually marry the Airbender reincarnation of her fiance.
What if her saying 'Thank you' to Katara wasn't just about the river. It could have been a secret message thanking her for Keeping the Avatar loved.

It makes sense because the previous water avatar (not korra) was getting married to Ummi but before the wedding, Koh the face stealer dragged her into the spirit world and stole her face.

Ko, the Face Stealer's name literally Translates to "Eternity." So Umi dies during the wedding and her true face is forgotten. Then all that remains are the paintings of her.

I always assumed Ko was named after the Chinese word 口 ("Kou3") which means face or mouth (or gate or opening or entrance/exit or head in the sense "head of cattle" but referring to people, because Chinese be like that)

I thought that the painted lady was a former Fire Nation Princess who drowned in the river but became a Spirit because of her extreme spirituality. Kinda like a mix of Iroh and Yue stories.

I could get behind that! I do think they're on to something with the water tribe symbol appearing on her forehead though. They incorrectly tied it to Kuruk but I think the train of thought makes sense. Maybe one of the prisoners that were killed after Hama escaped or maybe a water tribe woman who married and lived in the fire nation only to be killed when the war began.
Or maybe even a water tribe woman who lived peacefully and died in the fire nation. Not all spirits have to have tragic backstories 🤣

That's a very intelligent point of view really coz let's not forget that we never know of the true identity of the painted lady. And since the woman naturally cared about that town it would explain why she'd watch over it even in the spirit world
Actually, the moon isn't necessarily full in the later shot, because there is no discernable disk, just a bright glow. It might appear full (or rather symmetric) due to "overexposure" (a fake one since it's animated, but still).
also in our universe, the moons lighting is decided by how it stands from the sun and i thought i heard we see the same side of the moon but im not sure about that one
@@JohnDoe-vt8vp Yes, we mostly see the same side of the Moon from Earth, but we do get a peek of the other side, so altogether we can see 59% of the Moon instead of 50%. Google "libration" for details.
@@JohnDoe-vt8vp The Moon is tidal locked with the Earth which means the Moons rotation and orbit are synchronised in such a way that the same side of the Moon is always facing the Earth no matter where it is in it's orbit/rotation.

I reject the impulse that in every fandom everything has to be connected to something else we are familiar with. To me, the painted lady existed to show even the smallest town in this world has a deep, storied history to it and mythology all its own. That deepens the world. The idea that she needs to be another person that we were introduced to that one time makes the world seem smaller and shallower.
I hope in a future comic zuko gets to meet the blue spirit

Every Avatar kind of screws over the next one.
Szeto screwed over Yangchen by only focusing on the Fire Nation, ignoring the rest of the world which meant Yangchen had to focus on the world ignoring spirits which some argue sent Kuruk into an early grave since he had spend so much time there. (Also she made things too peaceful).
I don’t know how Kuruk messed over Kyoshi so skip.
I saw an argument once that Kyoshi actually, accidentally, made it so that the Earth Kingdom was less united which made it so Sozin could conquer it more easily screwing over Ruko and Aang. (Though Ruko could have, but didn’t, prevented the war).
If Aang hadn’t run away he could have saved the Air Nation, a mess that Korra ended up fixing.

@@Nerdnotwashere Actually, I believe that Korra ended up fixing Wan's (The first Avatar) mistake (creating the need for an Avatar in the first place) by reuniting the physical and spirit worlds and restoring true balance to the world. I also believe that Korra may have also permanently ended the Avatar cycle (explaining why she can no longer communicate with her past incarnations). Bear in mind I have not read the books or the manga so I'm just theorizing here.

Sir, in our world, she died about 2-3 years prior. In-canon time, it's been about 3-6 months, not one.
Yue died in late/end of Winter, this ep takes place in beginning of Summer

@@dariusscamander9358 No, each Book corresponds to their respective season. Water is in Winter. Earth is in Spring (there's even an episode where they say Appa is shedding his fur at the beginning of Spring.) And Fire is in Summer (Sozin's Comet is said to arrive at the end of Summer.)

Why does a random northern water tribe woman become the guardian spirit of a random fire nation river?
She was born and raised in the southern water tribe. But I agree that it doesn't make sense why a Water Tribe woman would want to help the fire nation. Not because they're enemies, but because she has no ties to them.

Surprised you didn’t talk about the reason the painted lady has a face could be that spirits can represent themselves however they want.
Like how the Avatar spirits can pick their age instead of all looking like old geezers.

Not to mention the moon spirit and the ocean spirit are two different spirits so Yue being the ocean spirit with black hair doesn't make sense HAHA
Also, Ummi was the fiancee of an Avatar, and Katara, who dresses up as the painted lady, ends up marrying Aang, another Avatar!
Talking about Kuruk leads to an interesting point in that almost every Avatar we know of does two things: fixes their previous incarnation's mistakes and makes new mistakes for their successor.
Korra deals with the downsides of the united peoples constructed under Aang's time.
Aang deals with Roku's failure to prevent the war
We don't know about Roku's challenges, but I imagine Kyoshi's style of mediation left a lot of villages that dislike the Avatar for one reason or the other.
Kyoshi deals with Kuruk's lack of involvement in physical world affairs.
Kuruk has to deal with Yangchen's flawed and human-centric "compromises" with the spirit world.
Yangchen probably had to make those deals to address her predecessor's almost exclusive focus on rebuilding the fire nation.
Honestly think it's pretty obvious that Yue isn't the Painted Lady. For one, they look nothing alike and, two, the Painted Lady was stated to be a local legend which means she's been a thing around there for a while. I thought it was obvious that she's a local powerful spirit. You know, like Hei Bai :v
Edit: also, Ummi has distinctly different eyes from the Painted Lady who has eyes that we've only seen in the Fire Nation. Kyoshi comes close to having that type of eyes though. Not saying it's Kyoshi, just saying that she's the only other person I can remember coming close to that eye type other than Fire Nation poeple.

Fun fact: the Avatars reincarnate into a person who has a similar appearance to their late spouse aka husband or wife.

While you make a compelling argument, I have to wonder why would she have become a river spirit guardian instead of an ocean spirit or spirit guardian of the north pole where she was born and passed away? It's traditionally written that when a spirit usually forms, they either haunt the area they died or tie themselves to something relating to their death or of great significance during their life. Yue, being the moon, is able to cast her spirit where ever the moon can shine its light, but I can't see the same thing happening here since I don't see a connection between her and this random village that may not have existed during Kummi's life.

shes just the ocean spirit basically, yue can show up anywhere the light shines, Ummi probably looks after bodies of water or something.

I have to say, it's a little weird that Ummi, from the Northern Water Tribe is the patron spirit of a Fire Nation town, but to each their own, right?
Well she died long before the was animosity there, so it was probably just because it was a struggling river town when she first manifested
That's why I think it's one of the prisoners that were killed after Hama escaped. The water tribe connection is there, that symbol on her forehead is very similar to the water tribe symbol, which is the one Kuruk wears but I think that's just a coincidence. Especially since the whole tribe uses it as their symbol.

@@Vixen1409 Yeah, she ran Kyoshi island after her mom died. There’s a little girl on Kyoshi island named Koko (the one who calls Aang “Aangy”) and she was named after the original Koko.
That still doesnt explain why a spirit who was born from a southern water tribe citizen and whose patron(??) predominantly lives in the northern tribe would become a guardian of a random village in the fire nation half the world away. Would love to know how that came to happen assuming your theory is right

If she is indeed influenced by the water spirit then she can be anywhere water is cause you know....the "sea". She left the town because of pollution so it's not hard to assume she just went to another town that needed help.
@@Joseph_Roffey , if I remember right, those that have their faces stolen don't actually die (not right away, at least). I'm pretty sure Aang meets some faceless animals before he encounters Ko.
My guess is that after she was pulled thru the one entrance to the spirit world (the spirit pond) by the face stealer and was saved she wondered the spirit world for a while and finally found an exit that just so happened to be in the fire Nation, as for why she stayed there I'm simply guessing she fell in love with the place (it is really beautiful after cleaned) and she had no reason not to because the fire Nation wasn't considered bad back when she arrived

Also "La" is the pull in the "push and pull" cycle, Ummi was quite literally- pulled in the water as well.

I'm actually allergic to the fur that a bison shreds so I would be allergic to Appa
because when I watch something I can't skip an episode unless I'm cringing so hard I won't skip it but I ont cringe at all during the appa ep I had to watch it so sad
I think that the painted lady is avatar Kiyoshi's mother. An airbender turned criminal who was known for painting her face with red and white grease makeup as a part of the "flying opera company" (her gang) and died tragically young seems like a great candidate to become a spirit. She also would have died around the right time.
This is a better theory imo because of the specific part of the painted lady's story is her spirituality. Air Nomads are trained to be disconnected in this life in order to become enlightened and ever ascend into a spirit. We only know of three people ever doing that, none of them being airbenders, but one WAS a firebender, Iroh. If your theory is correct, she would at least be a better candidate HOWEVER it was Kyoshi's father that painted his face, not saying she couldn't pick up her husband's tradition. But, she also abandoned her monastery life to become a criminal, which to me, seeing as Air Nomads are known to want no earthly ties and are thus without material, she would have lost her spirituality connection. Even her bending became weakened over the years away from the monastery so I would assume that maybe she is also not the panted lady. Still a better option than Ummi however.
@@TheAce5399 she did lose her spiritual powers due to being a criminal. that's the reason she uses those fans to airbend since she can't airbend well this means that to airbend, you need to have spirituality so the same applies to her being a spirit roaming in the normal world since spirits can roam in the spirit world they can do that in the material world but at the time the spirit portals were not open so its not her 100 % not 99%

Zhao also mentioned that the ocean and moon spirits decided to become mortals in the mortal world. Tui, the moon spirit became mortal by giving Yue a life. But they never explained why La, the ocean spirit became mortal. This painted lady theory explains why La became mortal. La saved Ummi, but it costed La to become mortal. This is just another theory of mine that supports this painted lady theory.

No, if her face were gone, she would not have a nose or eyes. We see this with the monkey outside Koh's lair when Aang talks to him at the end of season one and again in the third book of the comic trilogy The Search with the faceless young water tribe man. He doesn't even age... or eat... for like, multiple decades.
Zoe H plot twist, she painted on her eyes and was so good, she also made the nose look 3D.
I always imagined that she was just a normal villager, someone who wanted to do good, but for whatever reason, didn’t want her friends and family finding out. This theory is interesting too.

Since Ko took Rafa's face, the theory that the Painted Lady just painted on a new face is cleared out of the picture. But looking into the Rise of Kyoshi, it says that Rangi took on the Painted Lady's makeup design when she and Kyoshi joined up with the Flying Opera Company. So possibly that the Painted Lady was once either a member of the Flying Opera Company or could have been even Kyoshi's mother Jesa. But maybe the Painted Lady could have been someone that had once met Hark and Jesa & in my new theory, maybe she was born to a Fire Nation family with having some water tribe in her blood due to her hair and eye color.

well he was in a library that holds all info about future past and present in the episode when Appa was stolen
@@markuswilson872 yeah, but the description of modern technology is based on the foxes point of view, so a computer would be something like a colony of super fast ants that does math and paint over a square in front of the human, and an excel timeline would be a magical scroll made by those ants that predicts the optimal future. Said scroll would be designed by the ants and painted inside a box by a mouse that runs back and forth with its feet covered in ink

Do a theory on how Iroh was the only person who could see aang on roku's dragon in the spirit world. It still baffles me to this day.
Because Iroh is already connected to the Spirit World, having made several journeys there in his youth. They make a point to point it out in the show before it happens
This theory also fits nicely in the greater narrative: The avatar is connected to his/her past lives, so it would make sense to them being attracted to certain characteristics in their other halves. The episode establishes that Katara and Ummi are much alike, which is consistent with this idea. And it's also kind of nice that the wife of an avatar was given gratitude by spirit of the wife of a past avatar.

Umi could have received a new face after hers was stolen by Koh, the same way that Ursa received a new face: from the spirit known as the Mother of Faces (aka Koh's MOTHER). It would bridge the gap of Umi & the Painted Lady in your theory.

The Mother of Faces knows what her son does to others. Just because she doesn't know of the connection between Aang/Kuruk & Koh, doesn't mean she never would have met Umi. She doesn't have to encounter Koh to have encountered Umi.
And we know that those without faces can live for quite some time, stuck between life & death, as evidenced by Rafa's experience. Even if Koh dragged Umi into the spirit realm and stole her face, he doesn't seem to destroy his victims. So, Umi would have been left wandering the spirit realm without a face, perhaps until she ran into the Mother of Faces. We also know she can give people entirely new identities.
Being a spirit associated with water herself, perhaps the Mother Of Faces would have the ability to turn someone into a minor water spirit as well, aka the Painted Lady. We also know that the Mother of Faces is located IN the Fire Nation, which could explain why the Painted Lady, IF it was Umi granted a new identity, was also located in the Fire Nation: because Umi would have to have wandered the spirit realm until she reached the location parallel to the Fire Nation in order to meet the Mother of Faces.

Umi was forcibly pulled into the spirit realm by Koh. There was no need for her to be gifted spiritually, or even dead, to be there. I don't think you are comprehending the premise of my theory and how it ties into the topic of the video.

I have an idea. Is it possible that Zuko eventually learned how to bend lightning? I know he wasn't able to because he went through a lot of shame, so given his character's development, is it possible he already learned enough humility to do it? Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, they never really show this...
On the flip side, is it possible to unlearn lightning bending? Like if, say, Azula experienced enough shame and humiliation, can she lose her lightning bending?

Good theory but why the Southern waterbending tribe girl, who died at Northern pole in another water tribe/spirit realm, became the spiritual guardian of small unknown FIRE nation village and stayed there for centuries? It's just too random, don't you think? Why not become the guardian of southern tribe, where she came from, or northern tribe, where she lived? It's not like they didn't believe in spirits, but very much opposite.

That is a really good theory but I think Lady Tienhai is the painted lady. She is a humanoid spirit who tends to an ocean. She wants to help people live near the ocean. The city where team avatar finds the Painted Lady is called Jang Hui. Lady Tienhai is from Mo Ce Sea. Mo Ce Sea and Jang Hui are close together. Also, Tienhai and the Painted Lady look very similar.

Hey, SCB, maybe you'd like to watch She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. It's a little similar to Avatar in some ways, and a huge breakthrough in LGBTQ+ representation in kids' cartoon shows, which was spearheaded by Legend of Korra
plus Zuko and Catra basically have the same Arc (and they both have abuse of parents)

interest fun fact, there's a japanese myth that you are born into your next life with the face of who you loved most in your last life. It's no coincidence how much Korra resembles Kitara and if you compare Aang's face to Ta Min (Avatar Roku's wife) they're almost a mirror image of one another. When I first discovered this it made Koh not only menacing and easy to hate, but existentially /terrifying/. Piecing the real life myth with the Face stealer from Avatar made him seem like a beast in the egyptian afterlife that consumes the souls of the corrupt, no eternal punishment, just blackness and non existence forever... That honestly scares me more than 100 years of war...

You guys should look into the theory that if the avatar cycle went as planned and Aang didn’t get frozen in ice for 100 year Yue would have been a avatar. And that’s why she needs the moon spirit to survive because she didn’t have the avatar spirit. I’m not great at expanding things so I diffidently recommend looking into it yourself

It’s a fun theory, but not how reincarnation works. The soul of a person is reborn in a different body after death. There would be no second body before the first one dies.
If Aang had died during the Air Nomad Massacre the new avatar would be born much earlier, during the 100 year time jump. By the time the main show started that Avatar probably would've also died, or they would at least be about 100 years old.

Also, something he didn’t mention, Yui had the hair color of the white fish so the painted lady had the hair color of the black fish. Also the white fish symbolizes the day so the black fish it the darkness/night AND THE PAINTED LADY ONLY COMES OUT IN THE NIGHT! (Btw to clear it up a bit, Yui said the white fished saved her so she inherited some of its looks, and Ummi fell through the spirit lake with the fish so she inherited the black fish)

OMG, I remember thinking that the girl's face that Koa stole was very similar to the painted lady's. I just dismissed the thought, but this video has brought back that memory!! Even better, they made an official theory out of it!
In many Asiatic cultures it is quite common for there to just be a race of spirits, that just are. So it is always weird to me that people who are unaware of cultures who treat spirits as a race rather than as ghosts, consistently ask who was this spirit before they died. For example the Teton Sioux ancestral spirits are consistently confused for human ghosts, which they aren't. Ancestral Spirits are usually Animal Spirits that protect and guide their clans. But that doesn't really apply here, just really wanted to complain.

I was thinking of a way to incorporate the avatar series element bending mythos into our lives since we obviously can't bend the elements(at least naturally). I was thinking *water* could be ethics, *fire* willpower/drive, *Earth* stuff that keeps you sane, sound and grounded(pun not intended) and air could be carefree or free spirited.

The Painted Lady was one my favorite avatar moments and characters.

"Who was the Painted Lady?" A question I've *never* asked in multiple watching of the series. She's a river spirit who is prevented from manifesting due to the pollution. Doesn't need to be more complicated than that.
