Same, reading the Diary of Anne Frank made me emotionally shut down for a few days and I couldn’t finish the paper we were supposed to write about it- I was just staring at a blank word document. Avatar on the other hand, yeah I cried, but I wasn’t living through it with the narrator. I saw the aftermath and could better comprehend the lasting consequences.
Am I missing something here? How are you guys so affected by this? If avatar was not owned by Nickelodeon and if it was the show was darker and I still watched it as a kid, I know for a fact I wouldn't really care, I'll probally like it even more
I absolutely adored that he got to grow and mature and become a stronger person, but also remained a dork. You can have a comic relief character who still grows with the show!
Honestly, I think it was a wave of episode-by-episode Reaction-series to the show that sprung up around 4 years ago that kick-started a sort of domino-effect where people on TH-cam started talking about it more, until we are where we are today.
"Great shows grow with you." Most shows cast adult women voice actors to portray children in animation because there is no risk of their voice changing (bc they've already gone through puberty). Dimartino and Konietzo said that they decided to cast children as the voice actors for the main characters because they wanted the show to be genuine to connect with kids. They were okay with the actors' voices changing/maturing over time because the characters would be maturing, too. I think about that detail a lot. It's subtle, but impactful. EDIT: Now you know why Aang was played by a lady in that play in The Ember Island Players episode. The creators were poking fun at that common practice in the industry.
Very true, though Ember Island Players was also poking fun at a theater practice of having girls sometimes play boys. In Peter Pan, it's even traditional for Peter to be played by a woman.
@@tornyiegrace1696 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh wait...you're serious about this show. Let me laugh some more, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! This show is 100% for a reason. A reason that so many shows today will never understand or live up to.
You wanna cry? Ok (clears throat) “Happy birthday my son If only I could have helped you........ Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Comes marching home Brave soldier boy Comes marching home”
The ending of that episode was very sad for 2 reasons: - The death of Iroh’s son. It gives subtle insight into how Iroh was passed over as the next Fire Lord despite being Ozai’s older brother: He lost his only son & his sole heir in the war, & the death of his son was what stopped Iroh from fighting on behalf of the Fire Nation & why he wanted to turn Zuko onto a better path. - In memory of Mako. Iroh’s voice actor Mako died after Season 2 wrapped up, so that was extra salt on the wound.
@@fatihbahceci4943 It's the episode where Zuko helps a poor Earth Kingdom family by sticking up for their son. At the end of the episode, Zuko reveals he's Fire Nation, and he's ostracized by the same family he stood up for.
I never really processed how much Aang lost when it was discovered his entire nation was wiped out. I've watched the series countless times but this last time during The Storm, I cried like a baby when Monk Gyatso said "I won't let them take you away from me" the fact they never got to see each other again absolutely ruined me
Also the loneliness he feels when he thinks Katara and Sokka are going to leave him when he steals the map to their father. Them talking about their family and culture makes him remember his and enter a depressed state and refuses to lose the only other two people that he see's as family.
@@Lors_101 Yeah, to bad that people hate that episode because Aang acts like that, saying he is OOC. They don't empithize with what Aang is feeling, the trauma he has.
I feel super bad for Aang - like there's this one moment in season one where he's captured by the fire nation and he's still fighting back and then the Admiral mentions that he's the last Air Nomad and you just see the pain of that in his eyes :-(
@@otavioxavier9652 Well that's an interesting idea, but what does that mean? Gyatso is still dead and can't relate to Aang or communicate to him as an animal of any kind...it should just remain sad.
@@rohitcsrini Zukos redemption arc is way better than vegetas. vegetas is more iconic and recognized but from a story telling standpoint zukos arc is damn near perfect and much more layered than vegetas.
I would say that Meruem’s from Hunter x Hunter is better, but I’m not 100% certain if that’s a redemption arc as much as it is learning about humanity.
@@KhanMann66 I think the writing does it, the animation is good the first and second book the third takes it further, as for voice acting, is really good but neither the animation or voice acting are the near perfection, they are great, the writing though, I think that's where the show truly shines, the world building, characters and their development, storyline all of that amazing stuff
Never forget uncle Iroh's wisdom and relationship with Zuko, but most importantly never forget when he sang leaves from the vine on the walls of Ba Sing Se where his son was killed.I still cry to this day.
@@Beunibster and i suspect you like to see through the glasses of Nostalgia. ATLA has, especially for the Time, superb character development, worldbuilding and Animations especially when it came to fighting. Not per se in fluidity of Animation but in naturality in combination of each distinct fighting style to the corresponding Nation.
When a show can cater to both adults and kids alike while still highlighting human issues and conflict entertainingly, you have something special. Also, just great overall storytelling and world/character building.
Nickelodeon used to do these "Avatar weekends" where they showed all 3 seasons for the whole weekend and I was always watching it! My sister hated me cause we never changed the channel :D
I just love the fact that people are still talking about Avatar: The Last Airbender. Such a timeless work of Art. Hopefully the next generation will also be introduced to the show to have a chance to appreciate how much we Love this Masterpiece
@Jake Sangria I dunno about you man,but I've been seeing a lot of recent and not that recent Avatar videos lately. People are talking about it,you're just looking in the wrong places.
@Jake Sangria He's probably not. People are just talking more about the show because of the anmouncement and development of the netflix series going on. It's simply back in the public eye.
@Jake Sangria @pedreiva already said why they're showing up. Though that similar interests thing is also plausible, that's just what it is. Different channels talk about different things,it's obvious I'm not gonna find an atla video on a channel about movies for example. The reason they're showing up more frequently now is the Netflix series thing and even before that they still showed up from time to time.
Jake Sangria but people still do talk about this show in many circles. It’s considered one of the best American animated shows of all time and is certainly watched, respected, and talked about at length in other parts of the world.
@Jake Sangria I agree with the fact that it's an old show and it's obvious that interest goes down with time, but time to move on? To what, exactly, if I may ask? Once a great show, always a great show. There are people, like me, who will never forget the show, people that have watched it several times, and that look forward to showing it to their kids when they are old enough to understand the story. Besides, what's up with the aggressive tone? lol chill, who cares whether people are talking about it or not? Why did you feel to contradict the guy?
One of the saddest moments in the show was “The Crossroads of Destiny”. It was the episode where we thought Zuko might have changed but instead betrayed his uncle and joined forces with Azula.
@Guren 100% Agree that relapse made the whole arc better, more realistic and the end of it much more rewarding. Even after the series ending, in the comics, Zuko still has problems with his past demons as you can see in The Promise book series. Very well written character.
@Anas Exactly. Zuko never stopped wanting to go back to the Fire Nation. He just thought that he couldn't. It's like taking a recovering drug addict and danging a year's supply of cocaine in front of them. OF COURSE they're going to take it. It would be unrealistic and unsatisfying if they didn't. Zuko is an abused kid. Even abused ADULTS go back to their abusers all the time. Of course a child would go back to his father and sister.
I think I read that they wanted to be more graphic with Jet's death, but Nick wouldn't let them. They didn't want to leave it as ambiguous as it was for some
@@drakeowen7860 Yeah, I love how they lampshade that in the theatre episode. And that they actually managed to make what is really just a recap episode engaging
I love this show. Very rarely does a show climax to a finale that perfectly ends everything and makes to feel completely satisfied with the story you’ve invested so much time into
If they didn't have the zuko's mother mini cliffhanger, then I would've completely satisfied. I remember seeing that for the first time and it didn't feel whole because all the other characters got their closures but not him.
I remember watching it when I was young and liking it. Than when I was older I thought "Hmm, I wonder if it held up after all the years. Is it as good as I remembered?" Than I re-watched recently and DANG, it was even BETTER than I remembered by a wide margin. Crazy.
I’ve watched this show all the way through too many times to count, a masterpiece. But I’ll never forget the episode where they lost appa that shit hurt EDIT: rewatched atla, leaves from the vine is a pain that words cannot describe. thanks for the all the likes lol
That episode was so sad, but appa's lost day was the one that really struck me. Just seeing baby appa with little aang and him traveling around the world looking for aang was heartbreaking.
Thomas Houghton I think it’s because Katara has more combat experience with water than Aang. Aang usually uses air bending by default during confrontations in season 1 while Katara uses water. So even though Aang has more potential in water bending, if he’s not regularly putting it to use someone like Katara who is will surpass him
Thomas Houghton At the beginning Aang wasn’t training as seriously as Katara I believe. As the show went on Aang obviously got busy since he had to dedicate his time learning other elements while Katara could solely focus on water bending. But yeah Aang is definitely more talented, he’s the Avatar afterall.
@Thomas Houghton Since Katara was the only water bender in her tribe, she really had no one to train her at all. I think she just needed a teacher to grow her potential
Bingewatching this and getting into this show for the first time is one of the best things I ever did. I just finished the series and boy, it's truly one of THE BEST.

Iroh's part from the episode ''The Tales of Ba Sing Se'' still makes me tear up every time. There is just so much room for feel next to action and pace. I also love how almost all characters have something to bring in and it's meaninful, even applicable to real life.
What makes that song hit home even more is that the actor who played Iroh, Mako Iwamatsu, was dying of cancer. That episode was his last one before he passed. The episode and song were dedicated to him.
I gotta say my favorite episode was definitely "The Firebending Masters". We spent two whole seasons building up the fire nation as an evil, ruthless, war driven superpower that rules their youth through lies and propoganda. Then in *1* episode, we are exposed to the true origin of fire bending and that whole idea changes to a misunderstood art that was used for bad when by nature, it was good. Also, are we just going to ignore the Dragon Dance? When the dragons synchronized to it, that was a whole tsunami of surprise and amazement.
gotta agree here, I can remember the episode Zuko using his new skills and unleashing the beauty of the fire, while fighting against Azula - this shit still gives me goosebumps
I'm an anime guy and not many cartoons make me say this could've been a killer anime. But the thing about Avatar is that it doesn't need to be an anime. It's a perfect show.
I’m convinced this show inadvertently got me into watching anime. I had no clue what anime was when I saw this show, I was about 8 or 9 years old, I just thought it was cool. I think another thing this show helped me with was not to judge a whole form of media based on being animated, live action or whatever else. It’s an amazing show on its own. That’s what really defines it.

I'd talk about Avatar the Last Airbender for centuries if I could because it is the show that taught me what storytelling could do. It could thematically represent the wonders and terrors of humanity, the nuances between culture and identity, how to respect emotions that one may not understand. And beyond that it has taught me that storytelling is a tradition I want to continue so we can have more beautiful, thrilling, everlasting yet ephemeral journeys like we all took with this show. Thank you Nerdstalgic for expanding the conversation and rekindling my gratitude for ATLA.
Don't go making that point, the left will come after it for actually teaching people how to understand each other rather than how they want people to understand each other which is just through skin color lol "This is problematic"
Common Sense I don’t think any side of politics is without consideration of identity and it is tough to break the mold of what we’ve all been taught. Left or right, up or down, I won’t care about what people say if my voice is supported by those who know and care for me. I’ve got my answers like you’ve got yours, and it’s up to ourselves to pass our own tests. But I certainly understand your thinking that somehow emotions are irrelevant to the “facts” of reality. The show came out so long ago and people are STILL talking about it. It’s not one of the best animated shows, it’s one of the best TV shows of all time.
Considering the garbage that anime fans love to watch, I don't think this is really a compliment. Most anime fans will watch and praise anything that has big tiddy waifus, no matter how bad the story is.
Snugglebuns i’m not trying to start a fight, but you can’t sum up the whole anime community in 2 sentences. take a look at studio ghibli, it has so many good movies that made some people’s childhoods better. anime is beautiful. you can have your own opinion but not all anime fans like “ big tiddy waifus”
@@Bigtexbbq I mean it's not anime tbf it's just an animated cartoon since it was made in a Western country. It'd be similar to the anime community accepting Teen Titans or something I suppose, although I haven't really ever seen the anime community accept Avatar (although I don't follow that community very closely).
To me it’s so interesting that they didn’t have Ozai killed. It would be so easy to have him killed, it was basically Aang’s duty to bring peace, and yet he was able to fulfill his duty while not sacrificing his own morals
Cause relatable and loveable characters that struggle and grow. Also being able to see the struggles of Zuko and the happenings in the fire nation really helped flesh out the world and the perspectives of the people living there. Also You know.... Leaves on the vine left an impression.
That's what I love so much about this show. They have jokes and stuff, and yeah those are great, but what really stuck with me as a kid wasn't the jokes, it was Aang's anger after Appa is stolen, it was Zuko crying as he knelt, looking up at his father who was about to burn and banish him, it was Iroh crying as he sang Leaves from the Vine to his dead son on his birthday, in the city he died trying to conquer at Iroh's command. Most kid shows don't trust their audience to be able to grapple with that stuff, but ATLA did, and that's a huge reason why it is so loved.
@@friedkeenan I have rewatched ATLA 4 times, every single time I cry during Tales of Ba Sing Se. It is a CRIME that show isn't a globally known phenomenon. That show is so much more than just another Nickelodeon show.
Having complex characters on both sides of the conflict was important. Iroh was a great man, but he was fire nation, the "bad guys". And there were many villains on the good side of things, or good people trying to to the right thing the wrong way. The show didn't shy away from grey areas and that was huge. They let children contemplate really complex questions about morality and ethics and what makes a person good.
Why I remember it so well: Great story. Great characters overall. Great character archs & development of main characters, side characters and even some minor characters. Great art style. Great voice actors. Great messages and values delivered through its many stories within the story. This show managed to deliver a story most of Hollywood's writers today can only dream of accomplishing. Characters you can look up to, as despite of their journey being tough and full of hardships, they succeeded through perseverance, bravery, sacrifice, friendship and love. It elevated young and old, men and women, girls and boys - All had value and everyone could grow and aspire to become better together and learn from each other. It showed how terrible war and tyranny can be, without being overly grotesque or violent, yet sufficently emotional. This show is a treasure, and certainly a lot more can be said about it - Which is why I love it and remember it so well!

One of my favorite scenes/episodes (there are 1000) - The Storm - The Beach with Zuko - Blood Bending - Toph inventing Metal Bending - Sokka learning Sword Fighting - Zuko reuniting with Iroh - The Parallel Story of Roku and Sozin - Katara playing that Water Spirit
Avatar: the Last Airbender really is a stroke of genius. Its target audience is mainly 7 - 11 year olds (roughly), but its philosophical symbolisms; adult, mature and well-thought out characters and themes (who puts alluded genocide into a cartoon?); a simple yet effective and entertaining narrative arc and some of the most gorgeously produced animation the likes of which television and media have never seen before. I think the characters are what shine the most. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Suki, Zuko, Iroh, Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, Roku, Ozai, Long Feng, Gyatso, Jet, Pakku, Bumi, Jeong Jeong, Piandao, Zhao... all these people, major and minor, some better developed than others, have an *impact* on the show. They are what make the show work and what makes it so enjoyable to watch. My favourite moments are when Iroh sings Leaves From the Vine, Aang and Zuko meet the dragons Ran and Shaw, Katara meets the man who killed her mother, Sokka leads the assault on the airship fleet and Aang and Ozai's final battle. Just brilliantly ripe cherries on top of a filling, rich and *satisfying* cake.
Rewatching part of it, I recognized elements that were established that a kid in that demographic (aka pretty much everyone that watched it back in the day) wouldn't even understand, which is why it truly is a timeless, unique experience everytime
Avatar is indeed a masterpiece of animation. Not without its flaws, but its phenomenal overall. You might've mentioned the quality blend of seriousness and humor a bit more thoroughly though.

There are a myriad of reasons as to why we'll never forget it. For one, it was really well animated, plus the story and the characters were really well written.
i still remember how zuko cried when he apologized to uncle iroh. i love iroh and zuko’s father-son relationship so much. that moment stuck with me till this day😭
What made Avatar so great? Well, after hearing everyone talk about it and watching this video, I think I finally have the answer. It is one of the only shows that manages to keeps it's tone, character development, and plot direction all synchronized perfectly. It's a show that understands how to tell a coherent story while properly orchestrating the emotional beats of said story using the tools at its disposal. It's storytelling at its finest.
That and it didn’t under estimate it’s audience. Even though it was aimed at kids it trusted those kids were mature enough to handle heavy concepts like war, death and dealing with the consequences of one’s actions.
@@Thunderbender18830 Yeah, but Steven Universe tried that, too. And say what you will about what is or isn't wrong with SU, but it's hot garbage compared to Avatar.
I often say it's the most perfectly woven narrative I've ever seen. Each of the elements (ha!) that you named is a part of a whole cloth. You can take any single piece out and examine it, and it will be beautiful, but what's so incredible is how each piece works together. It's also worth mentioning the courage of the showrunners. They made some BOLD choices thematically and with content. As Alexander Alford pointed out, they never once talked down to the audience, or undermined the importance of serious concepts with silly gags like, I don't know, Rebels or something. It's a delicate balance: an entire episode devoted to teaching about chakras is interwoven with humor ("Tastes like onion-banana juice." "That's because it IS!"), but it never sells its subject matter short. It's woven, not jarring. I couldn't even tell you why it works in ATLA and not Rebels (sorry if you like that show, for many reasons). They never subvert the gravitas or assume the viewer needs something dumb to keep paying attention. It's grounded, sincere, and each piece belongs in the world and together. Similarly, Zuko and Azula's agni ki at the end isn't used to get the audience excited about seeing a "bad guy" defeated: it's treated like the tragedy it is, in no small part thanks to the brilliant score. At the end, you feel for Azula, a 14 year old girl consumed by the very fear she used to control people. It shows so much respect for the characters, and for the audience's ability to comprehend human complexity. Anyway this is my favorite show that's ever existed and it's time for me to stop writing a thesis.
I’m realizing right now as I watch this video that using a book chapter format to contextualize and explain a serialized show is a really clever way to make it so kids can understand the progression of the series. It’s probably the first show many of us watched which wasn’t on a floating timeline. Even teen titans which has progression has a lot of episodes which exist in their own box.
One thing that stunned me, but was a welcome relief, was seeing Zuko's uncle Iroh, go from being there for Zuko, until Zuko's lust for power started corrupting him, to helping Aang's quests. Iroh's my favorite character from the tv show.
Iroh was a great warrior who found peace outside of battle. He probably was stronger than Ozai but why would he fight when he can be happy playing Pai Sho and drinking tea?
Iroh is amazing because from the very beginning he shows that the fire nation while the antagonist aren't all evil. Even in the first season Iroh is a thoughtful, helpful, kind man. Don't be mistaken iroh is a powerful fighter that can and will kill people if he has to. But he consistently does what's best for the world at large and the people he loves. Most shows make their antagonists one dimensional flat characters. But iroh, zuko and azula are all 3 dimensional and fascinating.
Iroh never stopped helping Zuko, even when Zuko tried to split up Iroh followed him from a distance because he knew Zuko needed space to figure things out on his own. Iroh's only goal was his nephew's safety and wellbeing, he never acted in the name of anything else except for the freedom of the Earth Kingdom when he liberated Ba Sing Se and when he protected the moon spirit. He never even joined Aang, he inadvertently protected him while saving Zuko from Azula and he was always nice to him, but he never joined him.
the depth and detail of the show isn’t made for live action. the animation and story line and tone just isn’t real life. and you can obviously tell this through the movie. the emotion and comedy in the show just isn’t possible to recreate through irl people bc it would look tacky and cringe...

I remember back when I was watching this show when it was new. I'm pretty sure I saw every single episode. An absolute obsession, and one of, if not the biggest factor in developing my eventual love of writing. Though, at the time I wasn't very sociable. Didn't have any close friends, so I usually found myself just listening to other people's conversations. Sometimes they'd talk about what shows they were watching and... Avatar never came up. The few times I did ask someone if they knew it, they almost never did. It made me really sad at the time. It made me think that this fantastic show wouldn't get the recognition it deserves and it would fade into obscurity. Then I discovered the internet. And sometime later, found out just how many other people loved it. It's a little hard to think back so far, but whenever I see people talking about this show, it makes me happy to know that, even if none of them were near me at the time, I wasn't the only one who was inspired by this masterpiece.
I'm not sure where you lived, but Avatar definitely was not ignored where I was. Although my family couldn't afford basic cable, which meant that I struggled to keep up with it. Rewatching this show now i’m older unlocked so many memories. I hadn’t watched it since 2008, and each frame made things from when I was a young kid come back. It stuck with me like no other show.
İrem Akkoca ATLA as a whole is a complex masterpiece of storytelling and animation. It tackles and challenges a lot of ideas in the modern world such as politics, identity, hardship, and handling emotions. But most of all, it talks about maturity: the ability to learn something from your mistakes and to never be intolerant of others, a concept that is most often explored throughout Zuko's redemption.
Fun Fact. Dave Filoni directed 9 Avatar episodes (The Blue Spirit is one of my favorites). He also went on to do the Clone Wars and a little known show called "The Mandalorian" where he directed 2 episodes.
This is so weird this was in my recommendations bc I’m rewatching it now and didn’t think I even watched the whole series before... I somehow remember every single detail about the episodes.
"Mangs" was streaming fire emblem fates: conquest a few days ago and he mentioned he could recruit a unit for cabbages, and then I saw at least 5 people say "MY CABBAGES" in chat almost immediately and I just smiled.
@@GamerBoy870 She was trained since the moment she found out she was the avatar by the best masters on the planet. She didn't even have to go and find them like every other Avatar had to. Also I'm not sure you know what a Mary Sue is. A Mary Sue is a character that doesn't have any sort of struggles or conflict and is well liked and respected by litteraly everyone who meets them. Throughout the show Korra constantly gets her ass handed to her and makes many mistakes. She even brought an end to the Avatar cycle and had to restart it which probably makes her the worst avatar of all time.

The ending of that episode was very sad for 2 reasons:
- The death of Iroh’s son.

I've watched the series countless times but this last time during The Storm, I cried like a baby when Monk Gyatso said "I won't let them take you away from me" the fact they never got to see each other again absolutely ruined me

I never got to watch that episode when I was little, so when I rewatched the show recently, I was shook to the say the least.

I think the fact that this show had me as a little kid contemplating if it was okay/good to kill Ozai is a testament to its greatness
The fact that he didn´t kill him taught me a lot.
To me it’s so interesting that they didn’t have Ozai killed. It would be so easy to have him killed, it was basically Aang’s duty to bring peace, and yet he was able to fulfill his duty while not sacrificing his own morals
As a kid I was like "yeah sure makes sense" but now I think it would've been ok if aang would have killer Ozai tbh,
I always thought it would be fine...the real mercy was towards Aang for getting to keep his purity, not towards Ozai who deserved to die.

Why I remember it so well:
Great story.
Great soundtrack too

Funny how i only watched the show once yet i remember every single one of these scenes so well. This is truly an amazing show
Avatar: the Last Airbender really is a stroke of genius.

And the overall moral of the story is beautiful
@@AstralMarmot No no. I totally agree with your thesis. Bravo!
Dude, deep down, Iroh was everybodys favourite character.
@@mauricehopes9105 Iroh isn't an antagonist, even in book one.
