It's not just the Avatar that Sozin wouldn't want the Dragons to teach fire bending to, it's anyone he can't control under his authoritarian regime. Imagine how many more Sun Warrior tribes would be out there if the dragons weren't killed off. People in the fire nation could just leave Sozin's rule and live under protection of the Dragons instead, thus dividing his empire.

I always translated the killing of dragons as a method of killing off all forms of the old traditions in the fire nation. Before the war, Aang always talks about how the fire nation had a rich and vibrant culture complete with traditional dances (iirc its even mentioned that these dances were related to fire bending), spicy foods, unique forms of entertainment, and even extremely passionate people. We see older fire benders, ones that are reputed as masters such as Iroh and Jeong Jeong, are constantly forcing themselves to partake in other forms of entertainment such as board games and tea making. This tells me that the old fire nation (as before the war) realized that the best way to control fire was with ones passions and dreams, so why did that all change at the start of the great war? Simple, the fire nation needed more soldiers and the fastest way to train more was to instill fear, anger, and rage. These emotions are far stronger than the traditional emotions used by the fire nation, but had the benefit of working way faster (albeit far more unstable). So the fire nation killed its own culture just to further itself in a war in the short term. Keep in mind that Sosa probably never met for the war to last over a hundred years, he probably pushed for one last massive war to unite all of the earth s.t. killing off some culture probably wouldn't hinder the fire nation too much. What about the killing of dragons? Well, the sun warriors/the dragons hold the last bastion of knowledge in terms of how fire bending should be. By killing them, the fire nation ensures its able to keep up a massive army faster.
Fun question, would Sozin’s Comet supercharge the dragons like it does the firebenders?

Sozin's Comet just increases firebending ability period. It's only named after Sozin because he used that power at the start of the war. So yes, it would buff all the dragons.
One correction is that at the beginning of the series, Aang isn’t just some kid who can airbend-he’s already a master airbender, having mastered all but one airbending form and even inventing his own new move, the air scooter. So not only is he the last airbender, he’s one of the greatest who ever lived. Not surprising that he could beat a couple of random Fire Nation soldier, and even the prince.

TH3 K!NG Well the adults all seem to be masters, from what we see. But the other kids Aang’s age don’t have their tattoos, if I’m remembering correctly, meaning Aang must be a prodigy (I mean he’s the Avatar, so, of course).
Mephostopheles I didn’t realise he was the only kid his age, I Guess I didn’t look that closely. I just rewatched the seen, and all the kids seemed to master the air scooter pretty fast. Did it ever explain what the tattoos mean? I’m pretty sure he had tattoos before he found out he was the avatar, but then again the monks already knew he was the avatar. We don’t get to see the other kids airbend, except for the scooter flashback, so we don’t really no what the standards are.
TH3 K!NG Tattoos are given to airbending masters. Strictly speaking, a master is anyone who has mastered all the fifty-something airbending forms. Aang, however, mastered all but one, but then invented his own brand new technique-the air scooter-which earned him his tattoos. The other kids don’t have tattoos because they aren’t masters yet. And just because they too know how to do the air scooter, doesn’t mean they’ve mastered all the airbending forms.
Mephostopheles OK, that makes sense. I never really knew what the tattoos meant, so again I didn’t realise none of the kids have them. I also meant the speed that with the speed they mastered the scooters, and the fact that the only difficult looking move I remember is the air sphere thing, it doesn’t seem unlikely that they have mastered most of the moves. What was the move aang didn’t master by the way?
I always thought Aang was so OP because no one even theoretically considered how to defeat or fight against an Airbender in almost a century.
Interesting perspective, I've never thought of it that way.
The only reason airbenders aren't OP is their peace loving nature, spirituality, and nomadic lifestyle. Their fighting technique is evade and evade some more. If they are war-mongering and with the right incentive, they would've ruled the world easily. I think this is why Sozin wanted them all gone and not just the Avatar.
I do think that gives him a massive advantage!

Killing the dragons makes sense, if you don't want future Avatars to learn how to really, truly firebend.
Iroh lying about having killed the the last dragon is such an Iroh thing to do.

I like the point about preventing the future Avatars from learning firebending. But here's what confuses me. Every Avatar has access to their past lives and their memories. Technically speaking, they can literally master bending by themselves. We've even seen Aang and Korra meditate and project the past versions of themselves. Why not just use their previous lives as teachers? Seems like a waste to constantly seek out masters for every new birth when the Avatar spirit remembers everything from before.
@@caveshlin That's a great argument, but hear me out:
1) Let's take a look at Toph: she learned her bending from the badgermoles, i.e. the original earthbenders, and she turned out a pretty good bender. Also, Zuko got way better after meeting the dragons, so I guess what I'm trying to say is that learning how to bend from other people (be it past Avatars) is not the same as learning from the source.
2) I don't think the past Avatars are allowed/able to do that. I don't remember if it's mentioned in the show, but I think they're more of a spiritual guide/mentor than a bending master. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's the whole point of the past Avatars.

@@daninagy4173 spirits couldnt bend. in the spirit realm there is no bending. In order for past avatars to bend they ahd to take over the body of the avatar that was alive. hence, they couldnt do much teaching
@@caveshlin access to previous avatars and memories also require learning and mastering, as a spiritual aspect of avatar. Korra have trouble in this spiritual aspect, even when she is good at learning the physical bending ability.
Aang also require some time before he can contact previous avatars and control the avatar state..

So technically Iroh protecting the last dragons was actually *VERY* crucial to ending the war and Aang becoming fully realised. Honestly this series should be called Legend of Iroh cos he's the true hero of the story given how much influence he has on all the main characters by even the most indirect ways

@@lukahavelka7875 This is the preferred theory I’ve seen. You know how in _TLoK:_ Book Three, Zaheer could use a suffocation sphere attack to assassinate the Earth Queen and almost Korra herself? We know that Aang was taught all of the Southern Air Temple techniques *_except one_** which was forbidden,* and learning those plus developing his own technique (the air scooter) earned him his Master arrow tattoos at such a young age. What was that missing technique that Aang was never taught? Could it be a suffocation sphere, that the peaceful Airbenders would never use except in the most dire circumstances?
Then a bunch of comet-boosted elite firebenders attack (you know Sozin wouldn’t’ve entrusted this particular mission to any but his best firebending soldiers), and Giyatsu doesn’t know what has become of his young pupil, but the others under their care must also be defended as well as the Temple itself. I suspect that he used a suffocation sphere, but large enough to fill the entire room. The firebenders would be unable to firebend without oxygen, and within minutes would be incapacitated and brain-damaged, and then dead. But Giyatso himself had to remain in the room within the sphere to maintain it, and managed to remain alive long enough to make sure the job was done on the others, but not survive himself because, being a forbidden technique, even _he_ wasn’t exactly practiced at it. I dare say it got out of his control in his desperation, and sadly, it’s even possible that it went beyond that room to enclose much of if not the whole Southern Air Temple and many of the inhabitants died at his unwitting hands, not the Fire Nation soldiers’.

I've always thought similarly to this theory-- I didn't think the dragons were killed off specifically to prevent them from teaching the avatar, but in a more general sense to prevent spreading the true ideals and meaning of what firebending is supposed to be. I figured that the Sun Warriors lived in secrecy because if they were discovered they'd be eradicated, which meant that their bending style and beliefs were outlawed because they weren't in line with Sozin's vision. Sozin likely banned practicing any other form of firebending besides the Imperial style, which relies on hate/anger/strong emotions, and was therefore perfect for creating soldiers.
I also like to think that that was one of the reasons Zuko struggled so much to learn firebending as a child: he was too sweet and sensitive to produce any decent flames using aggression the way he was taught. At least until he lost his mother.

Headcanon I saw on Tumblr:
Monk Gyatso used his airbending to take all the air out of the room he died in, killing both himself and all the fire nation soldiers in there with him.
His clothes have no burn marks on them, because there was no oxygen to fuel the soldiers' fire.
I mean, in the Legend of Korra, Zaheer was able to do a similar thing where he suffocated the Earth Queen by bending all the air out of her. And in Book 3, Katara was able to Stop The Rain and bend it, creating a dome of levitating water.
It wouldn't come as a surprise that Monk Gyatso did a similar area-of-effect attack except depriving them with air.

5:30 It may be hard to do but they had Sozin's comet so it wouldn't have been that hard anymore to not just do it for a short time but actually fly. In the show, we saw Aang and Ozai using the technique for very long amounts when they fought so I think it is very possible to do. Some of the flying Aang displayed in the fight was more air bending but there were points when it was just fire bending.
that was the avatar and one of the strongest firebenders in the world. we don't see anyone fly with fire outside of the comet, and even then it's only select fire benders

Actually, it is possible that the firebenders flew up with sustained flight. Dragons are incredibly difficult to train and very intelligent. There have only been there known cases of people riding dragons. I don't think the dragons would have agreed to it in the first place. It would actually be much easier to train a group of elite firebenders to fly. Sozin had planned the attack for twenty years. He just needed the power of the comet so a group of elite firebenders could fly up to the temples and wipe out (almost) all the air nomads with the awesome power of their Sozin's Comet-enhanced firebending

because ravaa can only ever come back during harmonic convergence. before that time, it is possible for her to die 100% .
Raava can never die, as stated in Korra - she would just become very small and become part of chaos (Vaatu) until the next harmonic convergence. That being said, killing the human body of the avatar in the avatar state destroys the CONNECTION between Raava and the Avatar, which is what would cut off the cycle, not destroying Raava herself.

Dragons are traditionally very unruly creatures in fantasy, so to me it seems likely that a dragon in the Avatar world would not just bow to anyone. Maybe you'd need to be recognized as an exceptional individual by a dragon for one to agree to follow you, and I think they'd probably be kind of "monogamous" on the matter, so Sozin couldn't amass a horde of them all by himself either. Or at least it would be really hard to win multiple of them over, if getting just one to follow you was really rare.
Anyway, that was my two cents about the use of dragons in war. But otherwise I do agree, Sozin realizing that dragons might be the only ones that could help the Avatar to master firebending is a interesting theory, and sounds very plausible to me.
Edit: Oh yeah, you kinda addressed this shortly in the end. Should have watched it all, I thought that the theories about war efforts was already finished by 12 minutes.

I would love to see a spin-off show called “The Dragon of The West” that shows Iroh’s past as a Fire Nation General and his relationship with Zuko, Ozai, Iroh’s son, etc.
tbh if we get another show I would want the next earth avatar, I want to see how they live not being able to talk to any of their past lives. I want to see more of Korras legacy and the development of the new air nation.

I always interpreted it as Sozin’s Comet gave all fire benders the ability to “fire fly” and that’s how they ascended to the temples. I don’t think it would be a hard skill to learn once their bending potential went through the roof on that day. So I don’t think the dragons were involved in the temple attacks at all. I like the rest of the theory though!

Altho I see this as possible too, I'm still skeptic since that 100 years later only Azula and Firelord Ozai are only ones to fly with fire within whole series and only small bursts. Even Iroh won't (maybe can't?). So I wouldn't count it as just easy peasy that you learn within just one day and could fly literally hundreds maybe thousands of kilometres on the top of those mountains (that some are over the clouds even).
they had that power for maybe an hour or so, so they couldn't have learned it that fast plus we only saw ozai and azula flying so maybe it's just that hard
NinaBlaa yes but sizing comet was there which boosted bending, and as we saw when the white lotus was retaking ba sing se, jeong jeong was able to fly bc of sozins comet. There’s also the fact that every dead soldier we see has the armor of the fire bending soldiers, and besides the fact that that’s logical so they can harness the commit, it also ensures they can all get up. I’m also pretty sure dragons were fairly rare even before their genocide (like how the badger moles aren’t endangered, but are still kinda rare to see), and the only characters who have been seen to have them (in ATLA and TLOK) are fire nation royals (besides the sun warriors)
@@NiinaBlue Jeong Jeong used fire to fly during the comet, too, and not just in short bursts but as a constant flame jet, allowing him to hover in place. We probably didn't see Iroh or any other characters using it because the need simply didn't come up. Also worth noting is that in Korra, "fire flying" is used multiple times as well without the comet's influence, including by Mako, who is a pretty good bender but not really a master. He and Korra were even able to propel a plane with it. And it was used by Rangi in the Rise of Kyoshi. So it's not a skill necessarily reserved for only the most powerful benders.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if more people were capable of some form of the technique than what was seen in the show, in which case it wouldn't be a matter of learning a brand new skill on the fly, but getting the feel of a powered-up version of something you already know how to do. I also doubt the soldiers went into the genocide with no preparation or training ahead of time; those who knew the flying technique could have shown the rest how to do it prior to the attack.
The main reason I like that idea over the dragon one is because dragons are neither machines, nor cattle. From what we've seen, they are intelligent creatures with an understanding of good and evil. There's a theory going around that they could even be sun spirits in mortal form like the moon and ocean spirits took the form of fish. I'm a tad skeptical about that, at least that it's true for all dragons, but I do feel like the dragons are intelligent and aware enough that they would see that wiping out an entire race unprovoked was wrong and wouldn't want to take part in it. Maybe some like Sozin's could be persuaded or forced to help, but enough to coordinate a simultaneous assault on all four air temples with a big enough army at each to overwhelm all opposition? It just doesn't seem as plausible to me as that the soldiers were able to fly themselves up the mountains with a technique that thanks to the comet was definitely in their arsenal.
