As a one handed user I find this feature useful. Sometimes I think people like me with only one hand have a forgotten disability ; most people who think of physical disability think of wheelchair users, but people with upper limb disabilities exist as well.

Honestly, I’ve always preferred the smaller phones just so that it’s easier to use one handed. That’s pretty cool to find out that Steve Jobs kept iPhones small for so long for that reason, I never knew that. My hands aren’t small or even smaller than most people, just average for a 20-something person. But I still found myself using reachability often. I just got a 13 pro max a few days ago to continue photography with, and I have to say I was really nervous about the size of it. I don’t prefer larger phones for the same reason mentioned in the video - being cumbersome. But it’s actually not bad. Reachability continues to bring the screen down far enough that I can still reach things. I have to stretch my hand a just tiny bit, but that’s still not bad. 😁

I've been using this feature for years, especially when I'm in bed recovering from a hangover and too tired and messed up to type with two hands. It's the first thing I searched for when Apple ditched the original home button. I love the feature, it's even better then tapping the home button twice. As cool and smooth as apple's implementation was, i feel like samsung's one handed mode felt much more comfortable to use. instead of shrinking to become a square, the screen would shrink to a corner, but keep the aspect ratio, allowing the phone to still be used normally instead of a weirdly squished display in my opinion.

Accessibility software on all platforms is something great and I am glad that it is being noticed. 15 years ago I attended my first workshop on accessibility software and was amazed with a lot of the technologies of the time. At that time when I thought of accessibility software I only thought of screen readers like JAWS or Orca. Now there’s a variety of software, fonts, and hardware that makes computing accessible. This also comes to Mmmm s that we need to make our websites and applications more accessible and that should be the focus.

I never found reachability to be that intuitive, especially with the newer iPhones without the home button. In pixel when you swipe from left to right or right to left it goes one page back no matter what app you are on. Most ios apps these days do that but as soon as you go a few layers in you cant swipe back anymore but instead bring the page down and press the back icon. it'd be great to see apple adding that gesture feature. The drop down make up for it but it'd be great to have both.

Android had this feature long time too, by swipe your finger from the home button to the right or the left to shrink all the displayed content to the side you chose.
I had xiaomi phones for the last 4 years and they copied the feature exactly like in iOS by swiping down from the home bar.

I always wondered why it did that. As for Android phones, I couldn’t care less about the bigger display. I switched to Apple because there just wasn’t enough storage on Android. Everyone says oh, you can add cards. But the only thing you could put on the cards was music and pictures. I want space for apps, not music and pictures. I don’t know if Samsung has changed that because you couldn’t pay me to own a Samsung anything, no matter what features it has!

    • @-4023-
      @-4023- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

you can add apps to cards if you enable dev mode, your device should be fine as long as the only apps you put are socials and medias, like snapchat, insta, twitter, netflix, hulu and stuff like that, but I would understand staying with iPhone.

    • @gjeraldh2989

Staying with iPhone is fine but the reasons you listed aren't right. Storage capabilities are definitely better for Android, you just gotta tinker with it a little. But I know not everyone's into that.

Actually, I just played around with it and you can move the reduced screen all over the screen--it's just there are specific buttons to move to the left or right.

I liked my iPhone 5, it felt pocketable and light while still having a nice screen, and my iPad mini filled in for when I wanted a larger screen.
Didn't like the iPhone 6 as much, its finish scratched more easily under the case when dirt got underneath and I eventually had it sufferer the dreaded bending issue not long before I replaced it, though it didn't ever break, noticed the screen drop function after a couple of weeks and thought it was a bug at first.
Now i have a Pixel 6 Pro and didn't expect to have a phone screen this large. I have large hands so it's still fine but most phones are too big to comfortably use one handed for many people.
I recently picked up my first proper smartphone, the 3GS, and it feels absolutely tiny now.
