- From the bold notch of the iPhone X to sleek hole punches and Apple’s Dynamic Island, smartphone camera cutouts have come a long way. But why do they exist, and what makes each design unique? In this video, we dive into the pros, cons, and innovations behind these cutouts, showing how they’ve shaped our screens over the years.

You forgot the under -display camera, where the screen is completely viewable and creates a black circle around the camera when you turn it on. But I guess that's not a cutout anyways...
The phone has a cutout for the screen
@@Luigi_bros4321 its under the screen and its invisible
and the motorized camera like k20pro
He say the cutouts these not screen cutout
Yeah my Redmi Note 13 Pro has it
A hole punch with Dynamic Island software would be cool
Honor have phones that uses the hole punch design and also support dynamic island (honor magic capsule)
no it would not. Dynamic island is apple trying to hide a hardware limitation. only fools think it's a feature
I think thats what apple did, they use several hole punch and used a digital pill shape, not noticable due to the fact it uses a OLED screen
Oneplus, oppo, xiaomi, and honor has the dynamic island
I use DynamicSpot app on my pixel 6 for dynamic notifications
what about the underdisplay camera or the pop-up
Edit: I get it that pop-up is not a cutout
I was just thinking about it
Yeah, like the hidden selfie camera on the more recent Galaxy Folds. I wonder how far they can get with that tech?
this video is about camera cutout, pop up camera cant be considered a cutout, but under display is technically a cutout
I think he made a dedicated video on that topic already.
thats nor a notch
neither of those are notches or cutouts
tbh when the 14 pro was unveiled, I was like yo, "that's genius". it turns once dead space into something actually practical.
I loved popup cameras, Uninterrupted screen + privacy. But the hole punch/pill are the most practical ones

I think the hole punch in the corner is the best option. Because when you're watching content, a part of it is obstructed if the hole punch is in the middle. But usually games or content dont have something important in the corners.
And I really wish phones would bring back the dual selfie cameras. I think the wide angle camera is really important for selfies.
@PercyJacksonkidit would be, imagine always not looking straight into the camera because the cameras angle is off. Plus the perfectionist in me hates how the camera isn’t symmetrical
Oh that’s a good idea, imagine having a cutout in each top corner!!!
The top left hole punch is the best location if you like to watch movies as you barely noticed it due to black bars
no. topright would be the best or even top middle. the same plus for movies but better for horizontal
True though I still prefer the cutout in the middle of the top so it's symmetrical
Fun fact: the infinity v shape is mostly used in budget smart phones. An example for this can be the oppo a18
And you didn't include one manufacturer, sony. They dont have a notch, just a plain display with a great viewing experience
And it begun in 2018 with the first phone Oppo F9
The way the galaxy s8 and s9 did it was the best because it looked sleek and not to obtrusive. The hole punch is fine though
The S8/S9 will probably always be the best looking smartphones ever imo. It represents peak Samsung, I still have my old S8 Plus and it's still a joy to use
7:48 there's no cutout cameras already :p

E.g:-nubia red magic 8,9&10, mi mix 10,etc
Yes but it compromises camera quality. But still, I'd prefer that over a cutout.
@@excalibur2596 yes I would also prefer that
With bezels, we didn't have to worry about any screen-real-estate intrusion. And let's say that, to balance the impact of the top bezel, they employed a bottom bezel, and that really helped housing essential peripherals like charging port, microphone, speaker and headphone port. (But actually it's the other way around.)
Forget to explain,
1. In display Cameras (no notch)
2. Pop-up Cameras (also no Notch)
I like the hole punch cut out one
why no one is talking how sony did to their front camera,, they've just made a tiny border at the top enough to fit a very small front camera... and that's it seamless display, clean and modern.. its minimalism at its finest.
I like the pill cutout. I wished more companies adopted such a layout

I have a hole punch, and i forget its there alot😂
Watching this from my notchless Sony Xperia 1V. Yes it has bezels, but man nothing like this 21:9 aspect ratio display with front facing stereo speakers for a multimedia experience.
For me the "future" was under display tech, but the results so far have been underwhelming.. hopefully this tech improved and there will be no compromises in display or sensors quality.
In the meantime, long live uninterrupted displays!
Motorola One Hyper with a pop-up selfie camera and notchless display!
it's amazing how such a small creator can make such good videos, keep going one day you will become big
Hole punches show up on even cheaper phones now too. The OnePlus Nord N100 is one such example being exceptionally cheap for some of the features it has, but it's painfully slow.
It seems like the next step forward is under screen cameras that are completely invisible. Some phones have done this already, especially high end gaming ones. One concern is the ability for the camera to see thru the pixels but this seems to have been overcome to a large extent on some of the newest phones featuring it.
i honestly like the animantions from the dynamic island and the 13 pro's notch, the ✨DYNAMIC NOTCH✨
My favorite were the pop up cameras which gave you the perfect screen without holes, notches etc
Guys, bezels ARENT as bad as you think, you don’t need anything bigger than the iPhone 6 screen dudes, it had bezels to be easier to hold, why you think iPads kept it for so long?, and it gives a place to house things without taking screen space
I agree. I think if they just trimmed down the old bezels to be a bit thinner it would've looked just fine, and they would've been able to keep the home button. It's a shame when companies choose form over function.
Imo, smaller bezels are far better than the overly big shi- apple had
Fr, and Galaxy S8/S9 had the best bezels followed by the good old iPhone bezels, modern phones are all bezel less now but they are much harder to hold and use and can be a pain especially with bigger phones
I've still got bezels. No regrets getting a Sony Xperia.
without bezels, mistouch are rampant
Glad the center punch hole is the finest design choice.
Watching this on my Honor Magic 5 Pro. It uses the pill shape but in the corner and Honor were using this with added features like their own version of dynamic island before Apple were. It's the best solution for front camera I've used, I barely notice it in the corner, screen is immersive but still has face ID and added functionality.
I remember when my high ass wanted to drag the holepunch to a different location because it occupied parts of a video I've been watching 50 times in a row and got mad I couldn't do it.
I want bezels and a perfectly rectangular display.
rectangular??? brick ah phone
@@Personne.19 The screen being rectangular doesn't mean the corners of the device have to be. Look at an old Samsung Galaxy S III for example. It has a perfectly rectangular 1280x720 screen, but the device's body has a more rounded shape.

You've forgot to mention the hibrid solutions like having the camera cutout visible but also hiding other sensors next to it under the screen. That way the dot cutout doesn't have to compromise sensors but is still cheaper than hiding the camera under the display as well.
can't believe you're at almost 7k bro, well deserved growth 🙏
I very much prefer the Pop up camera. Since there's no notch or camera cut out.
I very much enjoy the entire screen.
honestly i rly like the dynamic island it's clean useful and definitely nicer than the notch bc whether it's still bigger than a hole punch cutout it's still not connected to the borers of the screen so technically its edge to edge js with a cutout yk
Not to forget with motorised selfie cam that make the screen just a screen without any notches

Huawei: am I a joke to you?
Explanation: huawei has a pop up camera
wdym oppo, vivo, and oneplus all had pop up cameras at one point. Video's about camera cutouts, you ain't going to see pop up cameras here.
wish they'd still make it today tho, it's cool as shit
@@kanari- I agree, it's waay cooler than a notch
that's not a "cut"out
My lg also has a pop up
Here's how i would rank almost all of the front camera layout based on design and my preferences.
1. Thin bezel that is symmetrical. (Example: Most modern sony phones, samsung s and note 8 and 9)
-This is the perfect way, it's not annoying when you're using landscape mode or playing games. It's balanced like all things should be
2. Corner Hole Punch (Example: Samsung S10)
- Since it's in the corner it's not as annoying when in landscape mode and it looks good.
3. Rotating/ Flip camera (Example: Samsung A80, Asus Zenfone 6,7,8 flip)
-This is probably the best if it wasn't for the maintenance. But if you don't care about that you can enjoy taking selfies with your best camera and you get a screen with nothing.
4. Pop up front camera. (Example: Mi 9t, Oneplus 7 pro)
-Just like above but you don't get better picture quality and the maintenance is just as bad. But again, you got nothing on your screen.
5. Under display camera (Example: Redmagic 8,9,10 pro)
-looks weird on early model but is getting better. But you lost picture quality but it will get better.
6. Centre hole punch (Example: Samsung Note 10 and a lot of other phones)
- This looks good but pretty out of place when in lanscape mode.
7. Teardrop notch (Example: Essential phone, Some LG phones)
- Same as above
8. Small notch (like the iphone x but smaller but bigger than a teardrop notch) (Example: Google Pixel 3 XL, Huawei P20)
- Even though this is kinda big, but this has more personality than the one I'm going to mention after this.
9. V shaped, teardrop notch. (Example: A lot of midrange phones)
- This thing looks ugly for some reason, it's trying to look sleek but i think it takes up a little more space than the one on the essential phone.
10. Apple Dynamic Island (Example: iphone 14, 15, 16 pro)
- This is fucking stupid, atleast it looks little better than the original.
11. Thick Notch (Ayo this sound werid af) (Example: Iphone x, xr, xs, 11)
- This thing is trying to much but hey, atleast it looks good at the time but it is way too annoying.
12. Huawei 3 centre hole punch (Example: Huawei Mate 60 pro)
- Wtf is huawei even trying to do? I mean the face unlock is faster than usual but apple takes wayyy better approach.
13. Thick/Not symmetrical bezel. (Example:Almost every phone made before 2017)
-i know ya'll gone be mad because some people loves having easy access to the notifications because your thumb can reach easily across the screen. But the reason you can't do that now because of the screen size, if you buy a smaller phone you could do the same thing. Unless you prefer the screen size of an iphone 5 then there's nothing you could do.
Did i miss any? This is just my personal take, i don't give af what you think.
I like samsungs approch so far after recently updating from the note 9.
You can "turn on" the top bezel, select specific apps to use it or not use it in, or just leave the hole punch alone.
I have to top bezel on for videos, I dont really play games on my phone (that's what a computer is for lol, and I have the legion go, so portable computer gaming. We really do live in the future) but I would probably have the bezel on for that, too. Otherwise I have it set to auto for apps and just change it if I would prefer it one way or another.
finally some1 who gives content i love
Actually hole bunch and a teardrop has proximity sensor speakers and a light sensor for automatic screens brightness they built into a small bezel at top or literally underneath the amoled pixels so it isn't just camera but yes only lacking is 3d Face id but with investment I think that could be worked out but most manufacturers just opted for touch id what i prefer my self.
face recognition on a phone doesn’t really make much sense for me. On a laptop, you open it at eye level and the camera looks straight at your face and unlocks the computer, pretty easy. On a phone, you have to hold it to use it to begin with, which means your fingers can very conveniently interact with a fingerprint sensor. With facial recognition, you have to lift up the phone to your face to unlock it, which adds just that little bit of unnecessary overhead.
A person looks at a computer from a distance at eye level, and picks up and holds the phone. I feel like apple got it the wrong way round removing touch ID from phones while not adding face ID to macs.
i feel like the older iphone cutouts are just too hilarious
I my self own two phones one is Xiaomi 13 lite that has pill shaped cutout with depth camera and front camera and second phone is Redmi note 13 that has hole punch i personally really like the motorised pop-up cus i don't really use frontal camera and i just find the pop-up action quite interesting
A design of a camera cutout that i like is the underdisplay camera
That type of cutout is used in redmagic phones
And it dosen't affect at all and give a very imersive way to game and use the phone
Essential phone were the first to bring the notch
my fav is the notch and pill cutout
Others try to minimize their cutoff as much as they can, Apple innovated the dynamic island to be a functioning feature, convenient to use.
I own a iPhone 14 and I’m very happy with it I love it and it works well
Apple didn’t invent the pill shape but they claim they did als they didn’t come up with the Dynamic Island feature bc honor made concepts of it before them
Actually they did come up with the Dynamic island. And it’s Just what we need.
A cut out integrated in the software? No one did that before apple
@@mta25135a quick google search can prove you wrong, android did it yes before.
True man
An important thing to mention is that, especially pre 2020, Android manufacturers made up for the teardrop-style notch and hole punch's downsides by having uneven bezels, usually putting other sensors like proximity and light sensors in a thicker top bezel or on the "chin". Apple wanted for all the bezels to be even, so they opted for the full notch instead.
I think instead of looking at it from a "it cuts into the screen" angle, it's better to look at it from a "the display can extend past the bezel around the sensors" perspective, since you still got the same or more active screen area than previous models.
Loving your videos man, keep it up!!!
I'm quite fine with the top centered punch hole.
I have a iPhone 16 plus with the Dynamic Island and a Samsung s22plus with the punch hole. I like the apple island a lot and it has its uses. The hole punch is minimal and does what it needs to do.
If only samsung and others bring back the rotating back camera idea from the Samsung Galaxy A80. Now that was a un-interrupted screen and the front camera was one of the best in its time.
Pop-up camera is still the best for me since I rarely take selfies. My OnePlus 7 Pro still looks futuristic to this day with its clean front display.
This is why I use a Sony Xperia, which still retains a (very small) top bezel.
Same.
Idk if i can speaking considering the only iPhones I've ever had was an iPhone 4s and 6s but i will say that the bezels make the phone look so much more better. Idk what it is bro, the bezels just give it that nice look, especially the white.
I've used v-shape, pill shape and single camera punch hole all in the past 6 months, all with comparable sized phones. And as someone who doesn't use my phone for watching movies and stuff all too much, I prefer the pill
4:42 Nothing mentioned 🔥
Finally another fan 😂
The amount I want Apple to make a “Dynamic Dot” cutout is unreal I love the dynamic island but hate how big it is
I mean it's not a cutout but the under screen camera would've been a cool thing to see. Seeing as not only Samsung did it on their folds but also Red magic does it on their gaming phones. They even now found a way to not have to use two separate displays but have the display in front of the camera be the same as the rest of the screen, which is mind blowing. One of the biggest problems is still camera quality and colors and lights being washed out due to the pixels of the screen interfering with the camera lens
The s10 series was revolutionary, No phone can be iconic as the s10 series
That's because they don't have face id. I rather face id than a full screen display anyways any day of the week. Also Dynamic island is also really useful for me.
love your videos. they're so informative and interesting with great editing. bravo!
The hole punch on smasung has face id and all the features of the tear drop
It might sound odd, but i always love the notch type display. Even though it may hinder video watching.
The last phone I had that didn't have a punch hole was the pixel 4 xl... I miss that phone the face unlock was great.
Watching this from my "uninterrupted full screen display" , Red Magic 10. When you at a certain age that selfie has no place in your life , buy this. Full screen 97% body to screen ratio 😂
I like the notch for some reason it also makes the screen look cooler 😆

I love my Google Pixel 3 XL notch, change my mind.
Brands should bring back some bezel at the top to house the camera. Uninterrupted display and the only reason they haven't is because it doesn't look "premium" or it looks "dated".
Sansung also made a version of the hole punch with pixles on to making it invisible when your not trying to see it
I love the Dynamic Island the most 😍
While I’m here, a common thing that makes me want to switch to iPhone from Android is the fragmentation of features, even within a phone manufacturer. You can really see this when it comes to making the camera cutout integrate the software.
There’s comments saying that such software is on x device manufacturer, but I don’t have it. I don’t really like to install software that has all these customisation (also includes Home Screen app icons too).
iPhones have all these features right out of the box. I really love their hardware and software integration especially with the Dynamic Island
_end of rant_
It's simple. If you are bad with tech, you get an iPhone. It is extremely easy to learn and use. It limits everything, treats you like a toddler so its safer overall.
But if you know what you're doing, you get an Android.
My Redmi Note 8 Pro has ambience light sensor, microphone and speaker though, that's the most crucial parts since android doesn't use faceID stuff here mostly
People forgot the camera that is behind the screen, and also realme is very underrated.
The Samsung's Infinite Display on S8 to Note9 was pretty cool ngl
I'm pretty sure that Huawei had a pill shaped hole-punch long time before Apple. Apple didn't revive it, just added a feature that isn't really all that useful.
