In this video we take a look at various temperature controllers, most importantly an Arroyo 5235 TECSource. We take it apart, look at a few of its key components, repair it, then calibrate and test its performance. More common than you think, but depends on the industry. we have kit at our place from the late 80's that is getting old (obviously) and the company that made it still gives us advice on how to fix it. its got a "computer" in it that to erase the data on it you expose it to sunlight!

I worked for a lighting rental company and we used Ethafoam to pack things in cases. Our flightcase builder used his CNC to make complex shapes for our equipment.
Closed Cell Polyethylene is used for tool box liners and cuts very well with a router.

Most of the time the temperature measuring device isn't the issue. Making sure that you're actually measuring what you supposed to be measuring without introducing another billion variables, is the hard part. Welcome to thermodynamics.
Every night during quarantine, I blew up an electrolytic on my windowsill, hoping Marco would upload again. Finally my prayers have been heard!
I wish more companies would have this philosophy like Arroyo.
I mean we all are hobbyist, but most of us have a job in the field, too. Do these companies which never mail back or answer schematic or whatever request with "we dont do such things" to be picked by us ignored hobbyists as supplier for the companies we work for...
hope you get what I am trying to say, its a bit late here :)
Talking a bout foam, I work for a company called Sealed Air who make a foam called "synergy" that you can CNC (its a Polyethylene based foam so the melting temperature is a bit low and it can be a little bit messy, but the sales pitch is you can recycle it), and our best competitor is a company called Zotefoams make a REALLY nice to CNC foam called Plastazote. Both CNC really well. They are both packaging foams and a few of our customers will 3D CNC packaging trays out of them. I'm scratching my head trying to think of a fabricator who may be able to give you a sample in Germany, but it has been years since i spoke to them last.
I have just been asked to scrap a load of 50mm Synergy material, so may be able to box some up and ship some out to you if you would like a sample?

For cutting foam, try cryogenic milling (see video from applied science on the topic of cnc-ing rubber) the gist is, that you cool down your workpiece enough so that it becomes hard. At that point just cnc it like regular plastic but continue cooling it

14:54 try clamping it at the long sides so the unsupported length is as short as possible, also screwing on the lid can help stabilize the part, had those problems multiple times at work when CNC-ing some housings

Amazing! It's interesting to see the different approaches to deal with temperature.
There is temperature control, thermal isolation, there is material science/device design temperature invariance, there's temperature compensation (and software calibration), and finally there's the union of several methods to get the absolute best results! I believe quartz watches (e.g. casio) use a mix of stable temperature dependence with thermometers. The problem of course is that temperature changes can't be too quick, thermometer precision is limited, and the temperature may not be uniform across the entire device. But you do what's possible under small device constraints! Great video as usual :)

High density EVA foam machines very nicely with aluminum or compression cutters. I use mostly 2 flute compression cutters.

The only part of this video I have experience with is the Noritake VFD. They're very nice, and even supply an Arduino library. But pretty expensive, the 40x2 model I used was over $100 if I remember.
Looks like they even have touch screen VFDs now too.

Hmm, and I thought I was doing well to get my heat pump operating within 2 K of the nominal set point! It frequently short-cycles (probably oversized for the room) and generally seems to run too hot, so I wired the thermistor onto an extension cable and added a parallel resistor to make the room measure hotter.
I do enjoy a good pair of well calibrated hands.
You should wear them more often, they look really good on you.
Around here some CNC hobbyists like to use rigid carbohydrate foam for some machining projects. Unfortunately the supplier is very local and you may have to source material from specialty stores. Goes by many trade names but in this part of the world they use an old english word, I think it's called "wůd"
HDPU is a pretty stable machinable foam or expanded PVC (sintra) but they are both ridged (sintra less so)
Idk about long term but Eva foam or the foam floor mats machine reasonably well and laser great
Been working on a project that requires some temperature readings. It's crazy how hard it is to get good accuracy. It's definitely a rabbit hole. Before long, you're looking at how much triple point cells cost.

You could try Etafoam, I only cut it using a bandsaw yet but it worked wonderfully so it might be cnc machinable
