    My LTZ1000 video • Ultra Precision Voltag...
    Solartron 7081 Modding doc.xdevs.com/docs/SOLARTRON/...
    In this video we are taking a closer look at a special precision voltmeter that was so far ahead of its time that it is still a powerful tool today. I am taking a few measurements of an LTZ1000A voltage reference to turn them into statistics. Then I am taking apart the Solartron Schlumberger 7081 bench top voltmeter to find opportunities for improvement. I am CNC machining a new front panel segment to fit Pomona 3770 low thermal EMF binding posts. Finally I am installing an ultra-precision LTZ1000A voltage reference, but the new components have to settle down before we can see any results.

    Home brew anodize : LOTS of distilled water wash after every step. You also need to do a quick soak in sodium hydroxide as the first step to clean and do a minor etch before the acid anodize. It will also strip the ano off and you can try again.

I now wish I had bought the one from my old calibration lab when I left the company; probably could have got it for a song, since no one else understood how it worked (probably threw it in the garbage with a few months). For anodizing, you need to degrease the part really well and then place it in a mild sodium hydroxide solution before you put it in the electrolyzing bath. You also should position the part so that bubbles can't build up on any surfaces.

    10µV StD renders 8 1/2 digits into 6 1/2 digit performance only. 3458A at NPLC 100, 16 samples, delivers about 200nV StD (~ 0.02ppm) instead, which includes already the stability/noise of the references measured, i.e. LTZ1000 based, or from 5442A calibrator.
    Question is, if something heavily drifts inside your 7081, like pre-amps or +/- reference amplifier, or if the A/D has a principle flaw.
    I assume all supply voltages and shielding has been measured to not be the root cause.
    Noise for DCV is not specified at all, if I haven't overlooked something!?

    • @reps
      @reps  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hm with the super slow sample rate 7081 could probably be called NPLC 2600, but I didn't use the digital filter at all before ... might be worth testing? 16 samples?
      PSUs were tested, but not up to voltnut standards ... I've seen some nice DIY power rail probes in the eevblos forum, which one should I build? zlymex?
      nope, can't find an official DCV noise spec either

    • @DrFrank-xj9bc
      @DrFrank-xj9bc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just wrote down these numbers of the 3458A statistics as a comparison. In your case, you might record measurements to PC, at a faster rate, 7 1/2 dig, to visually analyse, if that high StD really comes from high noise, or instead from drift. In first case, you get a noisy, but constant baseline, in the other case a drifting baseline, which might show lesser noise.
      The PSUs should only have low ripple and the correct voltages, as you mentioned that the capacitors were OK, and did not replace them. Nothing fancy volt-nutting about that. I just wondered about your comment in the video, that the 7081 is known to be noisy, or so.
