In this video we are taking a look at Elegoos new MSLA 3D printer, the Saturn. I am showing how to set it up and how to use it somewhat successfully. I am also taking apart a beta version of the printer to show a few of the internal details that make this product special. At the end I am showing some printed results to demonstrate the machines capabilities in geometric accuracy and small feature size.

Thank you for the excellent review. It was by far more technical and informative than the other Saturn reviews I've seen. I've only been resin printing for less than two months with a QIDI Shadow and while I knew I'd like the much higher resolution compared to FDM printers, I was completely blown away by the strength of the resin prints. I designed a small electrical insulator that requires high tensile strength. The central shaft is 6mm x 6mm and I wasn't able to break it with 100 kg tensile force, and that was perpendicular to the layers, so MSLA parts don't have layer separation failures as FDM parts do. Very good strength for a 1.55 gram part. I used Siraya Fast resin. I look forward to buying the Elegoo Saturn.

People complaining about it being sold out right now: the Mars is still a pretty good printer, at 229 EUR with tax and shipping from Amazon, thus a very good value proposition. Anyway, the Saturn will become available again soon, maybe at an even lower price point, and afterwards, there'll be a "Jupiter" with a 5K LCD and an even larger build volume or something like that. People need to be patient.

This is amazing value for money and truly a great device. Love it. Thank you Marko for this video finally something we can afford for ourselves!!
Indeed these SLA technology are still improving. So I wonder what the real limitations will be for this material? For example is the resin going to always be more expensive than PLA or ABS, therefore finally limiting the size? Or is the UV curing properies of SLA part going to eventually make these prints brittle under long term sunlight, making them not suitable for outdoor usage? Or does it just get stronger with the excessive UV exposure ?
Personally i feel SLA is such a great choice. And really like it. However the other options I am seeing are strenghtened filaments such as carbonfil TM which is a conventional plastic filament reinforced with 20% carbon fibres. I believe there is also a GRP version, plus one other carbon fibre printer (which is more like a true carbon fibre).
Anyway... also very pleased to see the great thick rigid aluminium construction... on a conventional lower cost 3d printer. You almost never see this on a $300 printer! At least not to my knowledge. Really hope they keep that design going forwards in future models. And do not cheap out there. Perhaps if we can also see more rigid designs on the regular 3d printers too at a similar price point? Would that even be possible given the extra 2 axis? Perhaps not IDK... Otherwise maybe on some budget cnc router instead.
What a great topic. Not very often but I am really impressed with the strength of the technology in this case (i mean for going into a realistic consumer product). Well done to those guys.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah it gets brittle with post-cure exposure. But maybe some progress can be achieved in this regard.
And yes it's never going to be as cheap as FDM materials, especially cost optimised ones reused from other industries such as HIPS.

How well does resin printed parts work with heated metal threaded inserts? I've yet to find anyone even attempting to do this. Will the resin plastic deform and fail the attempt. Will it outgas a deadly plume of nauseous gas? Will the typical resin even work? Are there any resins develped yet for this type of application? Any answers to these questions will be greatly appreciated. Of those doing reviews, I think Marco Reps might be the only one able to address these questions. TIA.

    • @n17ikh
      @n17ikh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@jamesmiller7278 UV resin isn't a thermoplastic so all that will happen is it will eventually burn if you try to use a heat insert. However, you can use epoxy to good effect. On the printed part it should have some internal knurling or ridges where the insert goes for the epoxy to grip and since the insert is already knurled on the outside it should work pretty well.

The chess castle piece was intended for FDM 3D printers. They just can not produce good results without using a small nozzle (.2mm), aggressive and precise active cooling as well as an extruder that can retract the same length of plastic without grinding it up with the small amount of printing per island and retracting to avoid stringing.

Looks real neat! I’ve always been interested in SLA printers as opposed to FDM. I assumed you wouldn’t need something as beefy as an FPGA to drive the LCD, since you don’t exactly need a fast refresh rate. 4k is about 10Mpixels, which at 8-bit greyscale is 80Mb. With refreshes every few seconds, I guess that’s somewhat fast compared to what an MCU can handle, but any modern graphics card, integrated or otherwise, should be able to handle that kind of throughput. And with all the used GPUs flooding the market after the crypto boom, it would be nice to see an SLAM printer use one of those.
Or you know, just plug the printer into HDMI and have software on your computer do the heavy lifting. That way you’d just use a standard LCD driver.

if you have two rooks, you can join them by their crenellations. they should mesh exactly, which i think is intended as a low budget tolerance test. maybe that's the "torture"? alternatively, once joined, you can torque them against each other until failure, which seems more like "torture" perhaps.

I'm wondering if they make usage the subpixels of that LCD. As they are rectangular it would only increase the resolution in one direction but this still by 3 times. They also could be used for anti-aliasing, too (like already in normal applications).
So, when will show up the 8K version anyway? ;)

    great video!
are you using IPA in your ultrasonic cleaner? i suggest using washing detergant (ganz normales flüssigwaschmittel für die Waschmaschine) with water. with IPA you get this milky finish. also with washing detergant, removing support seems a bit easier. give it a try!

You should build a lid-mover so you never have to touch it.
Then you don't have to have the shrink wrapped look.
Or, you could have it clear wrapped by the people who do vinyl wraps for cars.
It would take them seconds and cost next to nothing because they do cars day in, day out.
Not as cool as an automatic lid lifter but considerably more practical just have it re-wrapped every year.

Nice to see this space is still moving; decent rails becoming the norm, and now mono lcds too. Was a little tilted by the XY calibration though. 0.15 out of 20 is almost 1%, or about 3 pixels. Is that intrinsic to the lcd manufacturing process, and so could be calibrated out? Or is this the nonuniformity of the lighting, so perhaps can be fiddled with by part placement but is mostly unavoidable? Also while chitu and most fileformats support AA, many boards and firmware dont bother implementing it last time I checked (januari this year). Seems like this is no exception, and elegoo has a history of being behind the curve here.

Hi! Can you share the settings of the new "rook profile", I want to compare it to the settings used in the cbddlp file that comes in the mars flash drive, specially the lifting speed, since you mentioned that 70mm/min is brutal, but the rook in the mars prints at 300mm/min and also my prints since it's what I've been using

Since it's a 500 dpi screen would it be possible to print and expose pcb with it?

Q: why are we using a single monolithic image plane?
A small image plane, moving under the vat, could make a 'mosaic' exposure.
The same tech would allow smaller models to have much finer detail.
A good, fast 2k image plane is mounted on a simple 'coreXY' gantry under the vat.
    A 3 x 5 mosaic of exposures could give you 11,460 x 10,800 pixels in the print.
    This assumes a 3840 x 2160 image plane.
If you want ultra-fine detail, stack a bunch of 'half-tone' images.
Each image uses tiny 'micro pixels' with lots of 'white space' between them.
Each new image is shifted by one micro pixel.
This goes on until all the white space is filled.
You get a smaller model, but with the same pixel-count as the much larger one!
    Isn't that the dream?
Smaller model = finer point size?

It will be the Elegoo Jupiter, of course if we stick with the planet theme. Personally, I think the Saturn should have been the Venus or Neptune to allow for a few more skus. But we need higher DPI screens for those larger 13in+ machines.

I'm only 1/4 German, but your dry freaking banter makes my eyes water trying not to laugh outloud at work. Fortunately a mouse click and some Wim Hof breathing allows me to continue. I don't mean to be racist, but you my GN.
My Mars comes in friday, what you think of my rad idea... copper clad board on the plate, print a couple of layers on the pcb, and etch that bad boy.
Starting my own channel, so if you love this and made a vid out of it, you owe me a shout out (once I have some vids available).
