Erbium is my favourite element. Largely because it was part of two separate research jobs. I studied it as a dopant in optical fibres and then again a few years later as an alloying element in steel.
It was great in both roles. In fact I have never found a problem that Erbium won't solve (in cases where I have tried to use Erbium).

Hi Marco. Since you mentioned playing with fiber laser, I'm glad to help if you need splicing or cleaving. I have a Sumitomo cleaver and fusion splicer, plus common lapping, terminating and inspecting tools. Those were left from my power-over-fiber project during my PhD student career.

I have a very similar Argon laser, plus another that I've shown in a vid.
I haven't used them in years, but they make for great heaters. lol
And I used to build / splice EDFA (Erbium-Doped Fibre Amplifier) devices when I worked for Nortel.
I would probably still remember how to use the diamond cutter and a splicing machine, but it's been many years.
Splicing machines are fascinating to watch, no matter how many hundreds of splices I'd done.
